Piaf has been serving Wimbledon diners for 18 years and is a long established restaurant in this pleasant, bustling area.

Not good service, waiting staff seem demoralised, possibly in part due to the fact they don't see any tips paid by card (which they felt the need to point out). Anyway, we had to ask twice for several things, and I was only told they didn't have one of the dishes order just as they were serving the main course. Food was fine, but the pasta I had was not entirely what had been described on the menu. When is Wimbledon going to provide a decent restaurant down the hill?

Opted for the 5 course tasting menu with accompanying wine tasting menu through a Groupon offer. The wine was great and rmatched the dishes really well. The food itself was great tasting and well portioned for a 5 course menu, particularly the salmon and asparagus which done to perfection. My only criticism was the lack of atmosphere and other customers! We went 8pm on a Monday evening and was 1 of 3 people in the entire place. The upside of course was that the service was more that we could wish for but a tad too quick to rush us through the courses and the wine. It's not as if they needed to turn the tables quick! Would go back but perhaps as a lunchtime meal rather than dinner.

Have to say we were a bit disappointed in our meal at 40 The Hill. I had purchased a Groupon voucher for the 5 course tasting menu and it felt like a sprint rather than a marathon! The minute we'd finished one course the next landed on our table. They were pretty busy on a Friday night and perhaps just wanted our table back. I noticed the couple sitting in the next table - who must've been faster eaters than us were finished in just over an hour! I think we had one and a half scallops each, the terrine was lovely as was dessert but the port braised ox cheek was burnt and inedible. Won't be back!

Brunch at 40 The Hill in Wimbledon is not something I would rush back to. Eggs Benedict is always a challenge, and this restaurant did not make the grade - it was served barely warm, no garnish, no freshly ground black pepper and the oval-shaped dish wobbled around on the table. Bloody mary's were rasping with tabasco and what tasted like bottled lemon juice.

When I first booked at 40 The Hill, I had a late reservation (2230) but when I got there he told me the kitchen was shutting soon and sort of rushed me through my order. However once my order was in the service was much better. The food came quickly and both mine and my friend's dishes looked amazing, the steak was one of the best I've ever tasted accompanied with the perfect amount of side garnish and wedges. The duck was so tasty that I could've asked for a spoon to drink the sauce that came with it. Definitely a recommendation to foodies of the world. Some of the menu is expensive but mostly its quite reasonable and there is a lunch menu 3 courses for £15.50! So hard to find in London. GO AND BOOK A TABLE NOW!

  • Disappointing evening

Was looking forward to trying out 40 The Hill in Wimbledon but was incredibly disappointed by our evening. Service was shockingly bad, right from the waiter ignoring us and walking off when we said we had trouble reading the specials board to the constant re-requesting of items and the general sullen faces of all staff in there, including the manager. The food was seriously overpriced for the quantity & quality. The veggie platters were uninspiring, the Mozzerella & Tomato tower was tasteless and lacking in dressing, the Mackerel was also uninspiring. The worst was the desserts though - when the Strawberry, Shortcake & Cream arrived, it consisted of a small pile of strawberries and a single, shop-bought shortbread finger - ridiculous!

A good start for this new restaurant and the food was absolutely declicious, just a shame that the presentation of the venison detracted from our first visual impression. A few oddities like tinny speakers and music which distracted rather than added and strange decor.

Me and my partner went to 40 The Hill for the tasting menu. The food was excellent and the owners were great! We booked in for 7pm, which was a perfect time to sit down. We were able to choose where we sat, and had a great view of the entire restaurant. As the evening progressed more and more customers were coming through the door to make a really good atmosphere. We bought a voucher through Group-On, so had a big discount on the price of food, however i would've gladly paid the full price! Only slight criticism - The meat course wasn't to my liking (hence 4stars for food), however I'm not a fish fan but the Scallops & Salmon courses had me drooling all weekend!

40 The Hill in Wimbledon offered an interesting menu in a pleasant ambiance. The Bruscetta was tasty but the based probably better warmed. The bavette, scallops with pork belly, sea bream and venison all well presented and cooked. The toffee desert was delicious. Would recommend and return.

I recently went to 40 The Hill in Wimbledon. It was a nice place, fairly new and with lots of potential. But it could do with a few improvements: the food was nice but not spectacular; the service was good though the waiters seemed to have 2 left hands and kept dropping everything (it seemed that evening everything kept going wrong for them); decor could be improved; and we really, really missed there being no bread while we waited. I'd expect it would get better over the next months though.

Having previously used this restaurant recently for a taster menu which both my wife and I had enjoyed I recommended it for a group birthday lunch - I wish I hadn't. Service was very poor, waiter and waitress not at all knowledgeable or helpful. The food was not of any particularly good quality and definitely not as described on the menu; 'crispy' belly pork was soggy, pork 'T-bone' was half a pork 'T-bone' if indeed T-bone at all and 'gravadlax' was more like smoked salmon. The wines, red and white, were pretty much without flavour. A disappointing experience all round. Non of the party wish to go there again!!! We passed these comments on to the waiter and asked them to be passed onto the owner who was there, but he didn't.

I'm sitting on the fence with this place. The 3 courses I had were fine, but my sister didn't enjoy any of her food (large, tasteless portions she claimed) so it put a bit of a dampner on it. I haven't written it off as the service was great, really friendly and knowledgeable and they do ask for feedback which is refreshing. This is quite a new place so probably still finding their feet. So I will try again, but maybe not for a few months...

Nice little restaurant. Friendly enough staff. Apparently they have only just opened, so be careful if (like us) you are going there specifically to make use of the terrace - it's not yet open as of Sat 24th March. Perhaps phone ahead to check if you want to make the most of a sunny afternoon! Personally I don't hold it against them as these things happen in the early days of opening. Lunch menu a little limited at the moment, but the parsnip and apple soup was nice

We were new to the area and looking for a place to go for a more "posh" dining experience and 40 The Hill didn't disappoint. A nice intimate venue with lots of atmosphere and the friendly staff helped my it a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Definitely one for the more refined palette with some dishes including ingredients I had no idea what they where but the waitress was very helpful and guided us with choices - all of which were lovely. I can highly recommend the scallops and pork belly!

We had dinner at 40 the Hill last Friday. Ambiance was very nice and waiters were friendly and attentive. The food was very nice. My friend's dish came out a bit cold, but they heated it up without any problems. Presentation of food was very nice. The menu didnt have a lot of options for the main, but they all sounded pretty good. Price was OK - starters were a bit pricey but main was normal price. The 20% off from toptable was a bonus! Would go back.

We went to 40 The Hill, Wimbledon for Mother's day lunch. We did not opt for the set menu but was advised that this was the only option avaialble. We didn't really fancy a starter given the selection presented so went straight for the main which took over 45 mins to arrive and when questioned was told it was because we didn't have a starter?? We were approached once for drinks orders and had to request the 2nd. All in all, we won't be going back there.

A little disconcerting on arrival as there is a small bar area at the front and a council funtion was in progress. The food was beautifully presented,in fact one of my friends was so enamoured by the board her starter arrived on,our waitress said she could take it home with her! Marvellous, you can't argue with staff approved kleptomania! As far as the actual food was concerned,I could have done with more seasoning but it was well cooked and looked fantastic. We were glad of the Toptable 20%

40 The Hill in Wimbledon gives every impression that it wants to be a mid-high end brasserie, with attentive service, rustic yet high quality table settings and a good looking menu. However, the overall feeling was that as yet they haven't quite nailed it. Some of the food was exceptional - pan-fried venison starters and my girlfriend's ice cream/sorbet selection really stood out. On the other hand, my pork chop and sticky toffee pudding wouldn't have been up to scratch in an average pub.

I'm afraid that this was a poor dining experience. I did not expect frills for the price of £12.50 for two courses but service was very slow , even though we were the only people in there and there were about 4 staff standing around chatting. The food was obviously reheated/overdone in the case of the fish and chips/risotto, the crab cake starter was the best part. Our first time there was Valentines. Choice of the A la Carte or the 'Tasting menu' plumped for the tasting. Champagne was fine as indeed was all the wine I chose, sadly I cannot say the same for the food. After a pleasant mushroom starter the rest of the 5 food courses ranged from difficult to eat to downright nasty, most were served luke-warm and all on cold plates. Now I do appreciate that this was a special one off menu and maybe Chef had trouble with it, buy surely they should have sorted out the problems in advance, 14/2 comes round every year. Possibly this is why they also had their Carte available as well I did not see any one have any problems with the Carte food and the Manager was very apologetic etc Hopefully 1 off

A fish soup had flavour but an insipid consisistency, more a fish stock than the fish soup indicated (esp given the side of a rouille), the scallops and pork were tasty though the scallops were not hot . The navarin of lamb was generous + tasty, and the guinea fowl was nicely cooked, though the celeriac+apple rosti was a bit bland, and solid. The green beans were v al dente and without the promised garlic.
