Diner Reviews
  • " Food was ok well cooked and presented, nice decor - chocolate desert was the highlight , but in truth the food was relatively plain flatter’s to deceive a bit . The staff appeared a little to aware of themselves and the restaurant and not to concerned with dinners experience"

  • "This is our second time at angel with bag pipes first wedding day second 1st aniversary we would drive the 537 miles again for this outstanding place"

  • "This was my second visit to this amazing place. The first time I was with my wife for an amazing romantic meal - It didn't disappoint. The second time I was with colleagues from across the water. One of my party stated that his dessert was "The finest cheesecake of my life". Fine food and fine wines. The only "criticism" is that the ambience was subdued.. We felt that we almost had to whisper."

  • "Excellent value for money on the lunch deal which is available all day. Friendly service and great atmosphere"

  • "Delicious flavours, beautifully presented and just the right portion sizes. An original take on 'haggis, neeps and tatties' as a starter. One of our party particularly appreciated that any of the cocktails could be adapted to a non alcoholic version."

  • "We found this restaurant by accident 6 weeks ago and have now been twice. Both times, the food has been sensational - goats cheese starter and pork belly & cheek are a must have!! Had a great visit recently with a couple of friends and were lucky to get the private table upstairs - superb experience. Then at the end of the night when they bring the bill, the price you pay for the wonderful food and experience will blow you away - unbelievable value for money!!"

  • "Delicious and delectable, A&B's food is fit for King James, Adam Smith and the many other Greats who compliment The Mile with their steady gaze. Eat with Royality but don't pay. Kings Ransome - go to heaven and merry Angels with Bagpipes."

  • "Fantastic location, had a table that looked onto Royal Mile, tucked away in an alcove on its own. Great food and friendly service. Thoroughly recommended."

  • "We were looking for somewhere a bit special to take a young friend for her birthday lunch. We were lucky to get squeezed in here at relatively short notice considering the location and festival time. We had a wonderful time, very relaxed, service swift but not rushed, all waiting staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The menu was not huge but that was good, we are not fans of massive menus where nothing is done very well. Everything we had was well-cooked, and tasty. It was Scottish enough without overdoing the tartan.... Our 8 yr old son really enjoyed it too. All in all, a really great experience, we will definitely go back."

  • "My girlfriends and I meet up regularly. I had to change our original meeting date from one in July to another in August and the restaurant were very accommodating given that it involved a table for 8 people at a very busy time of the year. We particularly enjoyed our lunch at Angels with Bagpipes. We chose the set lunch menu which was both attractive, varied and very good value. ( and delicious !! ) Even with crowds enjoying a very busy festival going on outside the front door the restaurant was calm, quiet and very conducive to conversation and the service was slick and unobtrusive. We were the last table to leave after a busy lunch time service but no time did we feel hurried."

  • "Excellent food service and lovely position to enjoy the ambience of Edinburgh. Booked the table early so could go to the Tattoo, wasn't rushed from the table."

  • "celebration of an 80th birthday is always special however the restaurant made the evening special, food good and surrounding great,....so good we're going back!!!"
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "The restaurant has a great concept and a great location and is ok I guess. The concept limits the menu - and the limited menu is an issue. Our starters were smoked salmon and the haggis. The haggis was great and would recommend - smoked salmon was ok, portion size ok. The mains were Steak and Lamb. Steak size was way too small , not charred enough on the out side and lacked flavour. The lamb was undercooked . Desserts were good - the parfait was excellent. Normally parfait is so cold that all the flavours get anaesthetised but not here. Would I go again... probably not as there are more interesting restaurants in Edin."

  • "Lovely dinner: the service and the food were excellent. The dining room where we ate was class , very ( too much!!) calm. We'll come again."

  • "We were only stopping by in Edinburgh for lunch and a couple of hours in the afternoon so we wanted something central that was not too expensive but avoiding a pub lunch. This was just the ticket with helpful staff, good menu, smart decor and well priced. I recommend it."

  • "Having had the restaurant recommended, we booked for a Saturday evening during the Fringe. Could the restaurant cope with a full service on a Saturday night? The food was very good and given the thumbs up from our Australian visitors. The staff were very attentive and helpful with the menu choices. Overall very good and deserves it's place as one of Edinburgh's restaurants."
    dined on 08/08/2014
  • "We were a party of 4 dining early evening during the festival. We had a lovely table just inside the entrance. The food was superb and the service excellent. The menu is limited in choice but caters to all tastes. We only had time for 2 courses due to having tickets for the tattoo. We will definitely go back when next in Edinburgh. During the festival and weekends, it is essential to book in advance."

  • "Very nice restaurant right on the Royal Mile. Most place are overpriced and not so good. This is a good find in a tourist trap area."
    dined on 06/08/2014
  • "Was a little disappointed in service compared to the first time I dined there. Server was not interested (not the same server as 1st time) and after being given menus it took a full 20 minutes before our order was taken. Our server kept walking past us while chewing her gum vigorously. We were ready to walk out but as it is the fringe we were concerned we would not find somewhere else to eat. Food was good though, although our starter came at 9:10 and our booking for as 7:45 (although we were 5 mins late in arriving). Also we had to keep asking for extra drinks. My first experience eating here was fab, so I will try it again sometime, but not in the near future."

  • "Ate here with 5 other friends Fantastic location right in the heart of things going on in the festival Food and service excellent"

  • "My wife and I went for a special event lunch to Angels and Bagpipes. Set lunch menu was very good. Food well presented and very tasty. Good attentive service. Amazing place to find in the very touristy area near St Giles. We will be back."

  • "After ringing ahead to explain we would be 10 minutes late due to problems at hotel, we arrived only 5 minutes late to find we had been moved to what I can only call the cheap seats. We were sat in the entrance to the restaurant opposite the till and a small bar which a member of staff sat doing paperwork, also a member staff popped in to check rota and brought family members with them who then tried to arrange to sit in the main restaurant area, which seemed shocking that this was tried after we been moved from here. The service was not the best and this let down the amazing food which we we were served. I was disappointed after I had booked this a month in advance for a specail treat for my mam."

All the staff were friendly and service was good. I felt really comfortable as the staff were not overbearing. Enjoyed the whole experience."

  • "REALLY enjoyed this place - the food was excellent - quite gourmet. The servers were amazing - we had an ornery 2 year old with us and they were quite accommodating."

  • "We wanted a special meal for joint birthday for my wife and daughter and were not disappointed. The food and service was excellent - smoked salmon with crowdie, haggis with neeps and tatties and goats cheese starters were perfect. We all thoroughly enjoyed the main courses - the rump of lamb cooked to perfection, the cod with bone marrow crust and couscous blended well and the pork with tarragon risotto was superb. The main dining room was light and airy and relaxing - all in all a memorable meal."
    dined on 29/07/2014
  • "A fantastic meal; excellent food. Pork belly amazing. Lovely wine too. Let down by terrible service. 20 minutes before drinks orders taken, ignored the entire time. Had to get up to have water replenished as no one ever came to the table. The food does make up for it luckily."

  • "Chose Angels with Bagpipes following an outstanding meal here a few weeks back. We ate at 1930 meaning the Lunch Time menu (great value) was not available. However, the food was once again mouth-wateringly superb and we we shall return. A little more expensive but not over-priced - it is just better value before 1800 on the Lunch Time menu. Oh - and last of all, the staff are just brilliant!"
    dined on 23/07/2014
  • "Food delicious and service very pleasaant. Restaurant quite plain and small but the food makes up for it. Haggis spring roll was a delight"
