We booked Angels with Bagpipes with some reservations, owing to the name, but reassured by good reviews. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent, and good value too. For the main course, we all chose the braised beef with risotto, a dish that surpassed our expectations. Starters and desserts were similarly pleasing. The service was friendly and professional, including a complimentary glass of prosecco as we sat down (we had let them know in advance that it was a birthday celebration). We will definitely book again when next in Edinburgh.

Booked this Saturday lunch online as a birthday celebration. Asked for their small Halo room. Had a phone call the day before to confirm my booking, and was advised that the Halo room was already booked. No problem. But on arrival the other booking had cancelled so we got it after all - bonus! It's a very friendly restaurant, and the staff are very welcoming and attentive. The food was delicious - we went with the lunch menu and were all very satisfied with our food. I had mackerel pate with beetroot, served in a small kilner jar, followed by pork belly, which was very tender and not at all fatty. Dessert was a chocolate mousse, followed by good coffee. This would be a restaurant I would come back to in Edinburgh. Very conveniently located. A real find!

First time of visiting this restaurant. Met a friend for lunch and very enjoyable it was tool Service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was delicious, especially the 8 hour slow braised beef. Wine is a tad expensive. Surroundings very minimalist but chic. Would definitely recommend and will also visit again to try out the dinner menu.

  • Anniversary Dinner Poor

We attended the restaurant on Saturday 8th November and were given a table downstairs. We were given a complimentary glass of bubbly as it was our wedding anniversary, I though that was a lovely touch. I ordered the Venison and when asked how I wanted this cooked advised the waitress that I would like it medium well, to which she replied it is served medium rare.....why ask me in the first place???? When I received my meal the venison was rare.....not what I asked for as I can't eat it red , they took it back and cooked it again but when it was brought back I couldn't eat it as it was still not right and I didn't want it as my husband had finished his meal by this time. I will not be visiting this restaurant or recommending it to anyone.

Have given a low score for ambience as our lunch was marred by a very small man with a very big voice who told his three companions (and the rest of the diners) in great detail what he would have done with the food on the menu. Not the restaurant's fault but it did rather spoil our lunch. Won't stop me returning though.

As an out of town visitor to edinburgh I was looking for somewhere special to have a birthday meal with my friends and this restaurant was recommended by a friend of a friend. I checked it out on line and liked everything but the price. But we went ahead and booked anyway. It was well worth it!!! The food was delicious, the staff lovely and the ambience was spot on. The only downside was that it was a little cramped, too many tables for the size of the room

We dined in the restaurant on Sunday evening celebrating my husbands 40th and after reading many reviews we were not disappointed. The atmosphere and service were very good but the food was amazing. The goats cheese starter was gorgeous and the steak and lamb were great main course choices. Only criticism would be that the food came slightly quick but certainly didn't spoil our experience. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Service was great until after themain course whenit dropped a little, staff began to seem a little disinterested. Didn't spoil our meal though and would highly recommend this restaurant, loved the trout with creamed leeks and black pudding!!

We first visited Angels with Bagpipes during our visit to Edinburgh over Easter. We therefore knew that during our second visit to the city there would only be one restaurant to spend our evening. The restaurant was very busy but staff looked after us before showing us to our table a few minutes later. I skipped the starter as I remembered how fantastic the desserts were. I had chicken breast with leg tortellini, celeriac and kale which was so moist and amazing. My husband had the Pollock which he continues to talk about. For dessert we ordered chocolate brownie and parfait with Apple sorbet which we shared. The flavours were amazing and I would say one of the best desserts I have had and we can't wait to return to Angels with Bagpipes.

A very embarrassing situation created by a staff member who's incompetence embarrassed my wife, my business guest from America and myself due to a card machine communication error. After waiter walked around trying to get a signal on his machine and failing, he came to the the table and instead of saying there is a problem with the machine, in a very loud and clear voice declared "I'm sorry Sir but your card has been declined" the whole restaurant turned around and stared at us. My wife and guest were devastated, I was purely livid knowing that there was nothing wrong with the card. I immediately went to the front desk where my card was processed without error. Totally unacceptable and with little remorse, so unprofessional.

We had a great evening here.... the atmosphere was perfect, low lighting but not too romantic... the menu came and it was very limited - at first we struggled what to choose but when it came it was perfect. I had rib eye steak, medium rare, and beautifully cooked with the best thin chips I have ever had. My sister had the salmon - so perfect she had to take a picture! Puddings were lovely too. The service was good but could have been a bit more attentive. The decor and atmosphere was outstanding. Would definitely come back.

Beautiful Food. Waitresses very helpful but the restaurant had a weird system of ordering . Was told we couldn`t order Food "just yet" but could take wiine order even though waitress standing With nothing to do at the time. Sam was said to all tables was a bit confusing as most people like to order wine after they have decided what they were eating. It was a bit to rigid.

The food is fantastic, we had 2 appetizers and 2 entrees, all of them were a feast to the palate. Portions are small though, but I noticed that on all the good restaurants in England. I guess that is why they usually have a cheese plate on the dessert menu. The ambience is cozy and the service good. The only problem is that my husband ordered a a second drink that never came. I highly recommend the restaurant, the experience was great overall.

We enjoyed a very nice meal and were able to swap from the lunch menu to the al a carte - I started with Mackerel Pate and it came in a Kilner Jar, it was topped witth a beetroot jelly and served with Melba Toast, delicious. My husband had the Mussels which were plump and full of flavour, we both opted for the Rib Eye Steak which was beautifully cooked. We will return to this little gem.

Had a fantastic meal here on Saturday night. The steak tartare was the best ever as was the venison. Our wine was sublime, expensive but well chosen by my husband and the very helpful proprietor and it was an experience in itself! Couldn't fault the food despite initial reservations from me on the decor and situation of our table. Would like to see the "upstairs" next time as we will most certainly be back. Excellent value for money.

While the food was delicious unfortunately there was not alot of it, so much so my partner and i needed a pizza later on as we were starving. The food itself was lovely, however there isn't much of a selection on the full menu. the service was impeccable despite them turning people away every 5 mins because they were fully booked all night. Price wise its not particularly cheap but not expensive - if the plates were a little larger i would say it was excellent and good value for money, possibly the lunch is better. location and atmosphere are great - table at window gave you the music on the Royal mile as entertainment

My partner and I had dinner here on the evening of 10th September 2014, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. We were seated in the smallish dining room at the rear of the building overlooking one of Edinburgh's old "closes". The ambiance was lovely - not silent and stilted but also not as loud as a brasserie. The staff were excellent, the two young ladies who served us were friendly and chatty but not at all intrusive. The food of course was the star of the show. We both thorough enjoyed our meals. The menu is not huge, but this I feel enables the chefs to produce delicious, good quality food of a consistently high standard. If it's available, try the haggis in film pastry starter! A lovely and enjoyable evening.

A very pleasant evening, but in general the excellent quality of the food was let down by inexperienced waiting staff. Water glasses went unfilled for long periods, aperitif glasses still on the table at the end of the meal, trying to clear plates when one of us was obviously still eating. The food was truly excellent, though - a beef tartare starter was a particular highlight but the overall standard was very high.

Having had the incredible meal at Michael Neave's Kitchen & Whisky Bar the night previous Angels with Bagpipes was always going to struggle to impress but thankfully my birthday meal was still worthy of much Facebook blogging and enjoyed by all four of us that attended. The availability of steak tartare on the menu put to rest the question did I like it (a definate yes) and it was for me the highlight of the meal. The rump of lamb main was top drawer but for me lacked the depth of flavour I enjoyed at Michael Neaves the night before but was enjoyed none the less. The quality of food was undoubted, the execution refined, so in all an enjoyable birthday treat!
