Diner Reviews
  • "Chose Angels with Bagpipes following an outstanding meal here a few weeks back. We ate at 1930 meaning the Lunch Time menu (great value) was not available. However, the food was once again mouth-wateringly superb and we we shall return. A little more expensive but not over-priced - it is just better value before 1800 on the Lunch Time menu. Oh - and last of all, the staff are just brilliant!"

  • "Food delicious and service very pleasaant. Restaurant quite plain and small but the food makes up for it. Haggis spring roll was a delight"

  • "I had had a taste of angels with bagpipes at a food festival years ago and i have been dying to try the restaurant since then. Was not disappointed. The food was delicious, the portions were perfect and the waitresses very nice. We got the seasonal lunch menu for 14,50 which is an outstanding value for the food you get. The only bad thing is that my diet coke was flat, which really stained the whole perfection of the meal."

  • "Booked for an early evening meal by my wife. She is very clever about finding good restaurants via the internet. Serving a selection suitable for varied appetites and tastes. Service friendly and attentive. Dishes well prepared and presented. The duck and the haggis will thank you for such a suitable ending."

  • "Another visit to the divine Angels with Bagpipes, but this time a first for us - it was for lunch rather than dinner. We had a superb lunch - salmon tartar for me, followed by fish and chips of the highest quality, with the usual exquisite AwB presentation and service. It was unbelievably outstanding value - two courses for £14.95. Will definitely be visiting again for lunch - and soon!"

  • "Angels with Bagpipes is a charming little restaurant with very good food and service. We had smoked salmon for a starter and followed it up with duck and lamb. Everything was excellent and the service very good. The prices, from the perspective of a Londoner were very good. The atmosphere was also very good."

  • "Having read reviews many places i was expecting a great meal. yes the food was good, nothing special. however the service was ridiculous. the waitresses took forever to clear our tables, never asked once if our meal was okay and when we did manage to catch one of them we asked for more drinks which we never ended up receiving. we felt that all the attention was going to the big table of around 14 that came in after us and we just got forgot about. we then proceeded to complain to the manager who's response was very poor also. he apologised then turned away and never gave us another look. so i asked him again if he would be having a word with his waitresses so that this wouldn't happen again, he just ignored us. would not recommend."

  • "This is the second time I have eaten here. Wonderful food, good value and lovely atmosphere. The service is first class and the chocolate ganache is to die for. The best desert in the world ever!"

  • "Recommended to me 2 years ago, and my daughter's graduation was the ideal opportunity to try it out on this special occasion. To begin with, the menu was limited; both starters and main courses. No chicken dish which left my wife and daughter having to choose something they didn't want to eat. The Peterhead cod was far too salty, and the waiter agreed with me stating that he had already debated this with the chef. The accompanying couscous was yuck. My daughter's steak was grisly, not good for a £21 8oz steak. She chewed half of it and left the rest. Wish I had gone to the "Filling station" up the road as I have done before; better food and half the price. StacPolly is also a lot better. 2 out of 10, not good and I wont' me back."

  • "Angels with Bagpipes was recommended by a reliable source and even then it surpassed expectations. Fabulous (and I mean FABULOUS) food! Attentive service from the minute we arrived, oh, and did I say - the food was amazing!! HIGHLY recommended and can't wait to go back!"

  • "We had a late lunch here after my son's graduation. The menu was very good, offering at least three choices from each of the three courses. There were four in our party and everyone commented on the quality of the food. Beautifully cooked and presented. The mussels were superb and the chocolate ganache was perfect. Overall, a lovely dining experience, friendly staff and fab food. Recommended."

  • "My wife and I were disappointed in our experience at Angels with Bagpipes Saturday evening. The food was excellent, but the service and ambiance lacking. We were seated in the back corner of the back room where the only view was a closet door where staff kept going in and out of with chairs and things. Next to us was a large and boisterous party making conversation difficult. The waiter seemed in a rush to get everything ordered and served rapidly even after I asked him to slow the pace a bit. Underwhelming."

  • "We love Angels with Bagpipes and visit few months. Our meal on 27/6 was another superb evening. The food was exquisite ( goats cheese with beet root, haggis; steak, lamb; cheesecake) sounds so simple but the presentation, flavours and textures were divine. Lovely wine list, too. Service, led by the wonderful Ben, is always impeccable. Friendly and efficient. They're a great team. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!"

  • "We both ate from the table d'hote lunch menu. Each of the three courses was imaginatively presented, full of flavour and simply delicious. Portion size was was perfectly judged, though as we both had three courses and owing to its richness, one portion of the chocolate desert between two would have sufficed. A celebratory glass of Prosecco each was the best I've tasted and the glasses of Merlot to follow were perfectly chambred, smooth, full of fruit, with good body and finish. Service was attentive, unobtrusive and knowledgable. This was a birthday treat for a long standing friend who was thrilled with the food and the whole experience and we were not rushed either, even though the restaurant became busy."

  • "We held a graduation dinner for my daughter's graduation from St Andrew's and booked a week in advance. The table position, the ambience and the service were all top quality. A friend had pre ordered a bottle of champagne which was delivered on arrival without problem. The restaurant ambience is modern and pleasant. The food is what I would call Scottish modern and yet exquisite in taste and construct, the menu was limited in choice would be my only comment but not a criticism, they could be more adventurous such is the quality. Service was attentive and good, I spotted the table next to me being described the menu in French. All-in-all the restaurant was all we expected and more and a great recommendation if in Edinburgh"

  • "The food was good - waiter recommended the pork, which most of us had - but it was not outstanding. The house pinot noir included in the special was not good, nor did it pair well with either the pork or the beef. I consulted with the waiter about my wheat allergy and he was engaged, but my salad arrived with croutons. They brought me another, but as anyone with an allergy knows, this does not inspire confidence. The bathrooms are downstairs, around a corner, and up another set of stairs, and not well marked until you get to them. As I was there with seniors, this became a real issue for them. I would not recommend Angels with Bagpipes, however, it's worth noting that the photography they have on display is absolutely stunning."

  • "Dropped in for lunch before a trip to the Playhouse. This was a return visit so expectations were high and I was not disappointed. The place was just as I recalled. The staff attentive and friendly and the food? oh my the food was heavenly. I ordered the beef which was slow braised and served with a white onion risotto. It just melted in the mouth and the risotto was perfect with it. Then came dessert. What can I say?? The lady at the table to my right had to apologise for staring when my chocolate ganache served with raspberries, hazelnuts and milk sorbet was set in front of me. It was orgasmic. Will I go back to Angels with Bagpipes? Most definitely. Would I recommend it. Without a doubt. Best £14.95 I have spent in a long time :)"

  • "My daughter and I were only in Edinburgh for one night and wanted to have a really good meal while we were there. This restaurant was a very good choice. The food was imaginative and delicious. There was also a good range of wines by the glass. The service was efficient and friendly. If I am ever back in the city again, I would definitely book this restaurant again."

  • "Found Angels on travel website when we were looking for a place to have our last meal in Scotland. Our waiter was very helpful with the menu. The food's presentation was great. The lamb, the beef, and the fish - all wonderful."

  • "Very good food, with a variety of selections for each course was slightly let down by the disengaged attitude of the staff. We were barely greeted on arrival despite having a reservation, and were completely ignored as we left. There are a number of different sections to the restaurant so it's a bit disjointed and the atmosphere is very much determined by where you are seated and who else is there. A couple following the tasting menu were provided with constant attentive service to the detriment of everyone else. Waiting staff seemed to be young and untrained, slopping wine and water through their inexperience. The food made up for this to a certain extent, but they need to sharpen up their act to match the standard of the food."

  • "I dined at Angels with Bagpipes for a special reunion - four ladies who meet up every two years. Believe me we had plenty to talk about but wanted to enjoy good food and wine whilst we caught up. We had a fabulous evening in our own private alcove. The staff were excellent, attentive but not intrusive, on hand when we needed them but also left us to enjoy our evening. The food was excellent and I can really recommend this restaurant on all levels. We were the last to leave - you know how women can talk (!) - but were definitely not rushed or felt we had over-stayed. We will definitely return on our next reunion - just fabulous!!"

  • "I took my wife to Angels with Bagpipes as a birthday treat and was not left dissapointed. On arrival we were shown promptly to our table and given a complimentary glass of champagne and made to feel welcome. The menus arrived and I was intrigued by some of the dishes on offer. We both ordered the goats cheese starter which was delicious and we had different Main meals I went for the steak with the garlic butter sauce and my wife went for the voulevent which we both thouroughly enjoyed. We had a lovely bottle of rose wine to accompany our meal which was reasonably priced and will encourage us to return."
