Had a fantastic meal here on Saturday night. The steak tartare was the best ever as was the venison. Our wine was sublime, expensive but well chosen by my husband and the very helpful proprietor and it was an experience in itself! Couldn't fault the food despite initial reservations from me on the decor and situation of our table. Would like to see the "upstairs" next time as we will most certainly be back. Excellent value for money.

Our second visit and as good as the first. We took our daughter and her partner and they enjoyed it as much as us. Food was excellent, well presented, tasty and decent portions. Mussels and 12hr braised beef were both superb.

While the food was delicious unfortunately there was not alot of it, so much so my partner and i needed a pizza later on as we were starving. The food itself was lovely, however there isn't much of a selection on the full menu. the service was impeccable despite them turning people away every 5 mins because they were fully booked all night. Price wise its not particularly cheap but not expensive - if the plates were a little larger i would say it was excellent and good value for money, possibly the lunch is better. location and atmosphere are great - table at window gave you the music on the Royal mile as entertainment

My partner and I had dinner here on the evening of 10th September 2014, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. We were seated in the smallish dining room at the rear of the building overlooking one of Edinburgh's old "closes". The ambiance was lovely - not silent and stilted but also not as loud as a brasserie. The staff were excellent, the two young ladies who served us were friendly and chatty but not at all intrusive. The food of course was the star of the show. We both thorough enjoyed our meals. The menu is not huge, but this I feel enables the chefs to produce delicious, good quality food of a consistently high standard. If it's available, try the haggis in film pastry starter! A lovely and enjoyable evening.

A very pleasant evening, but in general the excellent quality of the food was let down by inexperienced waiting staff. Water glasses went unfilled for long periods, aperitif glasses still on the table at the end of the meal, trying to clear plates when one of us was obviously still eating. The food was truly excellent, though - a beef tartare starter was a particular highlight but the overall standard was very high.

Having had the incredible meal at Michael Neave's Kitchen & Whisky Bar the night previous Angels with Bagpipes was always going to struggle to impress but thankfully my birthday meal was still worthy of much Facebook blogging and enjoyed by all four of us that attended. The availability of steak tartare on the menu put to rest the question did I like it (a definate yes) and it was for me the highlight of the meal. The rump of lamb main was top drawer but for me lacked the depth of flavour I enjoyed at Michael Neaves the night before but was enjoyed none the less. The quality of food was undoubted, the execution refined, so in all an enjoyable birthday treat!

Second time here, first time was as a party of four, which exceeded our expectations. This time it was just two,an anniversary.I mentioned this when booking online and we were given a wonderful ,intimate space just two steps up from the bar.Glasses of fizz were delivered as soon as we sat down, which was nice!Menus and bread were served and we ordered our wine and food. The presentation added to the sense of occasion and the food was fabulous, the service was attentive without being intrusive.Front of house staff were extremely professional. This is fine dining without pretension.

  • Tasty food - but poor service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014
    Dined on 29/8/2014
Went to Angels with Bagpipes with my girlfriend and had a three course meal and the food was tasty, and very presentable. For starters we had haggis formed like spring rolls with a glass of whiskey -- excellent! For mains we had duck and lamb -- very tasty! For dessert we had the parfait. My girlfriend's parfait was great but mine was so deeply frozen that I had to wait 40 minutes for it to defrost! During the 40 minutes our waitress did not ask if the food was good. Neither did she react on my hard efforts to cut through the stone frozen parfait even though she passed by the table three times. I wonder what she was thinking when I had been sitting with a totally intact parfait for twenty minutes? Good, despite the poor service.

My husband and I were on holiday in Scotland and had been told the food may not meet our expectations. How wrong can anyone be. Scotland rocks the food world and brings in items you'd never have anywhere else. Angels and Bagpipes was tremendous and the service over the top. You will pay a bit more but the food and presentation is out of this world.

This was my second visit to this amazing place. The first time I was with my wife for an amazing romantic meal - It didn't disappoint. The second time I was with colleagues from across the water. One of my party stated that his dessert was "The finest cheesecake of my life". Fine food and fine wines. The only "criticism" is that the ambience was subdued.. We felt that we almost had to whisper.

We found this restaurant by accident 6 weeks ago and have now been twice. Both times, the food has been sensational - goats cheese starter and pork belly & cheek are a must have!! Had a great visit recently with a couple of friends and were lucky to get the private table upstairs - superb experience. Then at the end of the night when they bring the bill, the price you pay for the wonderful food and experience will blow you away - unbelievable value for money!!

We were looking for somewhere a bit special to take a young friend for her birthday lunch. We were lucky to get squeezed in here at relatively short notice considering the location and festival time. We had a wonderful time, very relaxed, service swift but not rushed, all waiting staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The menu was not huge but that was good, we are not fans of massive menus where nothing is done very well. Everything we had was well-cooked, and tasty. It was Scottish enough without overdoing the tartan.... Our 8 yr old son really enjoyed it too. All in all, a really great experience, we will definitely go back.

My girlfriends and I meet up regularly. I had to change our original meeting date from one in July to another in August and the restaurant were very accommodating given that it involved a table for 8 people at a very busy time of the year. We particularly enjoyed our lunch at Angels with Bagpipes. We chose the set lunch menu which was both attractive, varied and very good value. ( and delicious !! ) Even with crowds enjoying a very busy festival going on outside the front door the restaurant was calm, quiet and very conducive to conversation and the service was slick and unobtrusive. We were the last table to leave after a busy lunch time service but no time did we feel hurried.

The restaurant has a great concept and a great location and is ok I guess. The concept limits the menu - and the limited menu is an issue. Our starters were smoked salmon and the haggis. The haggis was great and would recommend - smoked salmon was ok, portion size ok. The mains were Steak and Lamb. Steak size was way too small , not charred enough on the out side and lacked flavour. The lamb was undercooked . Desserts were good - the parfait was excellent. Normally parfait is so cold that all the flavours get anaesthetised but not here. Would I go again... probably not as there are more interesting restaurants in Edin.
