Diner Reviews
  • "A few years ago this used to be a little stuffy & although the food was excellent, you were left feeling wanting. However it's changed for the better in recent years & we celebrated our wedding at The Auberge du lac & decided to return for our anniversary last weekend. As it was fabulous weather we were able to eat on the terrace over looking the lake & Brocket Hall, all very romantic. The food was still superb & thankfully the service was absolutely delightful."

  • "This was our second visit to the restaurant. The location is beautiful with a lake and swans. Drinks on the terrace on a warm evening started the evening off nicely. The taster menu was of excellent quality however the service was a little slow and there were delays between courses. Didn't spoil our evening though..."

  • "Great menu choice, food good but not spectacular given top London prices. Tuna tartare was pleasant but lacking any real depth of flavour. Beef cheek was lovely and tender, filet cooked well but lack of any any jus/sauce made it a bit dry and unexciting. My wife had a fantastic poached egg & Gouda starter. Half the restaurant lacks windows/atmosphere, so be careful with table choice. The sommelier was first class and recommended a really great wine that was good value. Service a bit uncomfortable, the waitress appeared every 5-10minutes to ask if we were OK, so by the end of the meal it felt like we kept being interrupted. A nice experience and nice food, but expect a bit more in terms of flavour and more intuitive service for those prices."

  • "The Auberge is a beautiful place, by a lake in parkland. Add to that views of the lake from the restaurant and some very good food and you have a lovely place. The service is keen and friendly and the sommelier makes excellent choices if you want him to."

  • "Excellent location, good service and nice but not truly exceptional food. Offers a good choice of wine by the glass recognising that a bottle is too much for two diners one of whom is driving."

  • "The food, ambience and service were great. Even though a builder had drill into a gas pipe which limited the menu options they coped magnificently and compensated us with a complimentary aperitif. It is the measure of a good restaurant when they can still deliver great service even with unexpected difficulties."

  • "What a lovely meal... I came here for an anniversary meal with my girlfriend and we were not disappointed. The setting, the food, and the service was top draw. The location is cosy and romantic, and the taster menu is delicious! Couldn't recommend highly enough!"

  • "Having eaten here last year we were disappointed by the recent visit as the food and service were a little lacklustre. The only exception was the fantastic Spanish sommelier who couldn't have been more helpful. The setting is also exceptional"

  • "A midsummer birthday celebration.....champagne on the terrace, great food. Only downside was the slightly delayed arrival of the main course."

  • "Excellent food and wine; tasting menu good value for money. 2 wonderful (though expensive) bottles of wine and charming sommelier who offered us tastes of delicious dessert wine too."

  • "We went to Auberge du lac for a special occasion. The location is, of course, fantastic and we had luck with the weather - cocktails on the terrace! As ever the service was very good (just missed outstanding because the somelier kept putting the wine down in a rush and then telling us "I'll be back in a minute to tell you about it." He did come back, but we found this irritating.) The food was amazing, we particularly liked the sea trout tartare and the lamb (which we had asked to be substituted for the belly pork course). The cheeses were also outstanding. The favourite wine had to be the Gevrey-Chambertin - heaven in a glass. It was an expensive evening out, but well worth the money, for an occasional celebration."

  • "I have been to Auberge many a times before and suggested to my two friends that we go for lunch. The dining experience begins as you enter the beautiful grounds. My friends, both first timers, fell in love with Auberge even before we had sat down to eat! We had our aperitif drinks outside taking in the glorious surroundings. We had the three course set menu. It was divine! Service was first rate: attentive but not over the top. It was the perfect lunch: beautiful surroundings, good company, great food and excellent service!"

  • "The experience started with the table position. I was sat facing a huge tv. It was Ascot ladies day but we were watching "Come Dine with Me". Why would I book an expensive restaurant to sit and watch this programme about other peoples food? The table we were directed to was in the far corner, we were not offered any other choices. Why was that? The food was up to the quality and taste experience we were expecting but I would have thought more "special" treats could have been given. For example I elected for the cheese (plus £6 option). I wasn't given a cheese board to choose but rather just hard or soft. No butter option and very sadly no celery to clear true pallet nor grapes to accompany. The coffees we had were served in a mug."

  • "Although the ambience and food were 1st class on this visit the service was extremely slow and poor. There was a table that the maitre d fawned around most of the time so we were unable to have desert wine and brandies to round off our lunch. it took almost 30 minutes to get our bill paid. My advice is to dine inside the restaurant rather than outside on the terrace, the service is far superior."

  • "Overall fabulous but we waited about 15 minutes for a drinks order to be taken on the terrace and a further 25 for the drinks to arrive, my husband had to go and find a waiter to ask where the drinks were ... poor start but delicious food, cheeseboard awesome. Maitre d' apologised at the end of the evening about the wait, saying it was because they were 'busy' !!! At £500 for four I would not expect this as an excuse, especially dining at an establishment such as Auberge. "

  • "We always enjoy the food and ambience - and were impressed that the restaurant remembered personal details (albeit slightly jumbled) from our previous visit. We got the impression that there had been a change of management (although many of the staff were familiar) and there were clearly fewer midweek lunch diners than we had seen previously. I hope this does not augur badly for this restaurant."

  • "We have been coming to this restaurant for the past 8 years and have always had a fantastic time. What has happened? The food was as good as ever but the front of house completely let down the chefs. We did not have a dedicated waitress and at one point we were left for 15 minutes with nothing to drink (water or wine) and eventually had to find our own wine to refill our glasses. When you are paying so much for your evening you do not expect this. "

  • "The food is innovative and expertly prepared. But after waiting for 20 mins for a menu and 40 mins for our barely warm main course (which had obviously been sitting on the pass for too long), a further 30 minute wait after ordering dessert led me to just ask for the bill. Instead, the waitress arrived with the ice cream dessert - now almost melted and with the accompanying madeleines almost cold. All the maitre d' could do was to waive the 10% service charge and claim that they try to do their very best to provide a good service. Clearly though, that effort doesn't result in the desired outcome. Excellent though the food was (if it had arrived at the correct temperature) it cannot justify the prices charged here without good service. "

  • "Having eaten at Auberge Du Lac several times previously it was disappointing to find the food mediocre, the service poor and the ambience far from relaxing (we did move tables to improve this). The new chef has some work to do and the team need to reinstate some basic service principles. "

  • "had the 3 course set lunch wonderful food and setting weather was great so we sat outside by the water it was special."

  • "We were a little disappointed on this visit to Auberge, as neither the service or the food was up to the previous standard we've experienced. We were left waiting a long time for both our drinks requests (the wine for the meal only came when we were already one course in!), with slightly lame excuses instead of an honest apology! The food was very nice, but not the great quality we'd expect from Aurberge, or for the price tag! Overall though, the fantastic ambience and setting was enough to mean that we still enjoyed our visit, but our enthusiasm for the restaurant is sadly a little blunted by the experience. A few issues to resolve, whereas on previous visits (last one a couple of years ago) we've had a great time."

  • "We have used this restaurant for nearly 10 years now and I am sorry to report a decline that will stop us from returning. Our liver parfait was nice even if a little hot but the mains were a disaster for both of us. My husband's pork dish was tough and my turbot could have been any fish and a little cold in the middle - too undercooked. The desserts were fine. Next door table also suffered with the wrong food delivered. I was asked how I enjoyed my meal and told they will adjust the bill. I was promised that next time they will do better. If this is the a la carte performance the chef should control his kitchen better. It was just a disappointment. and the only benefit here was the view. "

  • "Auberge Du Lac is suitable for special occasions. I took my 20 yr old daughter for her birthday and she enjoyed it. The staff we're welcoming and attentive throughout the meal. The food was made and presented to a high standard. The attention to detail was second to none. Although the portions are small, there was more than enough with the added bread and petit fours to make you feel satisfied. The prices do appear to be on the expensive side but when you consider the time and expertise put in from Chef Marcus Mcguiness and his team, the food is worth every penny. "

  • "At £30 a head for three courses (£25 for two), the set lunch menu at Auberge du Lac represents terrific value. You won't find better food anywhere else in Hertfordshire, with original flavour combinations, imaginative use of seasonal produce and elegant presentation more than a match for some of the more stratospherically priced Central London restaurants. Combine this with a beautiful lakeside setting (even on a grotty, rainy afternoon), and friendly but discreet service, and you're on to a winner. It was good to see the restaurant so busy on a Saturday lunchtime, and we'll certainly be back soon. "

  • "Booked for my mother's 79th birthday lunch. The summer set menu was incredible value , delicious and well cooked- pollock was just right. The additions of artisan breads and later petit fours were delightful!. The service was excellent and nothing was too much bother they even took my mother ( who found the stairs downstairs very steep) back up to ground level in a golfing buggy."

  • "This was our second meal at Auberge du Lac and it didn't disappoint. Superb food, lovely menu and very helpful service, although not quite as faultless as the food. There were a few larger tables than us in, which meant we did feel a little forgotten when it came to things like drinks. Didn't bother us too much as the food was so fantastic, so pretty minor point in the context of the evening."

  • "As an occasional diner prior to the change of Chef, we were interested to see how things had changed under the new regime. Sadly, it has not been for the better-although that would have been difficult-The Kir Royal was made with flat Champagne- sent back.No nibbles or amuse-bouche.The food was tasty but the "hot " food was spoiled by being served on cold plates. The portion of the mackerel starter was laughable! Wine, previously inclusive in the fixed price menu, is now additional. The pricing of the wine is a mystery. There are some wines where it is cheaper to buy 8 glasses rather than the bottle! Finally, I regret to report that the service was uncertain and staff obviously lacked experience and training. In summary-far from fine dining."

  • "Auberge du Lac is impossible to fault. Since the first visit there over a decade ago, it has always delivered. As regulars to fine London dining, it was a pleasure to come back to our "local" in this magnificent location at Brocket Hall and enjoy again the personal but unobtrusive service from knowledgeable staff that even top London restaurants often lack. We chose the six course menu and elected to take the sampler wines too. We were not disappointed. Every course delighted with only a slightly stringy lamb giving any pause against a very high bar already met. We elected for cheeses to finish; the selection was vast and the recommendations given to match the wine absolutely perfect."

  • "Took friends for a 'thank you' treat. Previous visit had been great success. We were ten minutes early and made to feel that we should not have been! Had champagne in the lounge and when the bottle was finished, small canapes arrived. On the previous occasion they had arrived at the table with our drinks. The were so late that the waiter offered to take then down to the dining room for us. We all chose from the table d'hote and were delighted with the food. Flavours unusual and quite delicious. However, the wine waiter was extremely rude and one of our guests reported this to the manager before we left. He needs either removing or re-training in politeness and customer relations."

  • "Relaxing drawing room for pre-dinner drinks set the tone.If you are a foodie, go for the 6 course tasting menu with accompanying wine tasting. Pricey but worth every penny. Most courses/wines hit the mark. Lobster paired with clare valley Riesling, lamb with tignanello antinori 2009 were the highlights. Portions were a decent size and compliments go to the chef and the lovely Italian somellier. We also went for the cheese supplement for dessert, which i'd highly recommend. Auberge may be pricey but in life you get what you pay for, if you want something special, go to Auberge du Lac."

  • "The Auberge did not disappoint, good service and good food. Chose to eat from the cheaper day menu, purely because the dishes appealed to me more; 3 courses for £39.00 - good value for money. It is always special going to the Auberge and there aren't many other local places that can compete with the ambience and overall dining experience. "

  • "Excellent choice for a romantic dinner or for that very special occasion. From your first step through the door until you leave the estate a memorable experience. Greeted with a smile and sincerely. We chose the six course tasting menu with a separate wine for each course and we were not disappointed. The smoked eel in soy sauce as a starter was delicious as was the turbot. Quality food cooked to perfection, served by attentive and well trained staff. The sommelier matched each wine extremely well. Could not fault the evening, but next time will request a table by the window in order to view the lake with Brocket Hall on the opposite bank on the hill. An experience not to be rushed but to be savoured."

  • "Returning to Auberge after a break of a few years (child now 4) for Mothers' Day was a risk...would the food be as good as before? how would they cope with a small child? would they have 'sold out' to the commercial world and crammed more tables in? We were not disappointed - a superb lunch, using local produce, exquisitely prepared and served, accompanied with good wine. Service was attentive and welcoming...and the rooms have maintained their airy and light feel, with sufficient privacy and space for all....including a toddler."

  • "We brought our 5 month old baby daughter with us and pre-warned the restaurant of this via email. Upon arrival we were greeted at the door and taken to our table. To our surprise the restaurant had giving much consideration to our visit in advance by preparing the table with plenty of space for our baby daughter and all of equipment that travels with her!! We were made to feel very relaxed and all staff were very pleasant and attentive to our needs. Food pricing was reasonable, alcohol was slightly on the expensive side (similar to the Savoy Grill) however, the wine we ordered was not available so the restaurant suggested a slightly more expensive bottle honouring the price of our original choice. Overall very pleased with our experience."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "spring menu 60 for 3 dishes. portions more like a tasting menu serving. Chicken for starters with a tea sauce was nothing special. oriental style of cooking, size of chicken parcels about 1.5 cm square which is a joke. Mains veal was not tender, more like fillet, outside was not caramelised and a garnish of a few onions and some very basic sauce was a great let down. The only item we enjoyed was the desert. Additional 17.50 for not even a glass but a half filled flute of champagne is a rip off especially for an out of London restaurant. I would recommend the wagoners."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "A very pleasant lunchtime experience for the four of us in very lovely surroundings. Plenty of menu choice, helpful staff and tables of a good size well spaced apart. The wine list seemed short of a reasonably priced house wine. Plenty of easy car parking"

  • "Was looking for a top end restaurant that was close to home to have a birthday meal with my girlfriend. I knew of the auberge but had never eaten there...seeing a fair number of mixed reviews on here I was a little nervous about what to expect. I needn't have worried from start to finish the experience and the food was fantastic...excellent service but not over the top and the food was superpower. Wine was expensive but it did not detract from the overall experience."
