Diner Reviews
  • "We were the first to arrive for a 7pm booking. It felt a little awkward as staff were still setting up tables and generally milling around. Just really lovely food in nice surroundings. Will certainly visit again, at a later time!"

  • "After reading some negative reviews it was with trepidation that we returned to auberge for a celebratory lunch. We could not have been happier - friendly and attentive service (which is an improvement in our view from any visit we have made over the years), amuse bouches, and palate cleansers between courses, a good range of wine pricing, including very reasonable wine by the glass, superb food that excited our interest with flavours and presentation. It was a sunny day so pre-drinks by the lake which was particularly delightful, and ended with coffee and petit-fours in the upstairs sitting room (at our request). Overall the fabulous celebratory lunch we were hoping for."

  • "What a fabulous setting ( first impressions matter ) and it doesn't disappoint ! We went to lunch on a lovely day hoping we weren't left with the feeling that we wished we'd stayed at home ( which is often the case ) but not here! We had a beautiful meal with superb little nibbles, pallet cleanser, breads and treats with coffee all little extras that enhanced our lovely meal . Excellent service ( nothing was too much trouble) by really knowledgeable staff helped make for a great get away from it all extra special lunch ! We will definitely be back I have been before and wanted my husband to see for himself and he now agrees it's a must on your to do list ! We won't leave it long as we've planned on taking friends already !"

  • "Excellent food and the service was simply outstanding. No better location on a warm summer evening."
    dined on 07/08/2014
  • "We enjoyed our dinner. The food was full of taste and well presented. The wines were great but expensive"
    dined on 06/08/2014
  • "Having eaten on serval occasions at the Auberge Du Lac my last visit was very disappointing. The table cloth had an iron mould stain which was pointed out to the waiter and while saying he would mention it to the laundry department he did nothing to put a clean cloth on the table. The stones from the olives were not removed from the table until the dessert. The dessert wine did not arrive until our desserts were almost finished. We had to ask for more water as the waiters were not particularly attentive. These points were made to the manager who wasn't overly apologetic which implied to me that he had heard it all before!!"

  • "The location and ambience of the Auberge du Lac is, as always, superb but alas the standards of this restaurant have seemingly fallen in recent times especially in relation to its wines and service. It has an impressive wine list but on my most recent visit none of the first three choices of wine were available and the serving of wines did not keep pace with the food courses. The menu, albeit for lunch, was this time limited. Overall a disappointing experience from, hitherto, one of my favourite restaurants."
    dined on 03/08/2014
  • "We have been here many times and it recently took a dip in standard after the chef changed, We are pleased to see that the dip has ended and our meal was excellent, especially the starter and main course which were easily Michelin one star standard. The sweets were good but not quite up to the same standard. Get these up to the same excellent and very tasty standard as the first two courses and the Michelin Star will return, as we will in 2 weeks time with two guests. Keep up the great cooking - we loved it!"

  • "very disappointed with the main course and dessert-over-complicated and too fussy wish the menu choice was wider and the food not so over-engineered"
    dined on 31/07/2014
  • "excellent environment and the weather was kind. Good service and food was good for the very limited choice lunch set menu"
    dined on 30/07/2014
  • "My wife & I have been customers of Auberge du Lac for some years now. It is a pity that their Michelin Chef left last year. His replacement has improved since arrival but it is still not as good as it was. Prices of the wine list has also risen considerably in my view. I get the impression that Auberge du Lac is concentrating on the Business lunch expense account brigade. This is a pity as for us older retired people the Auberge du Lac restaurant used to be the best in Hertfordshire. It has gone off the boil a bit seeking those with large bank accounts?"
    dined on 27/07/2014
  • "We enjoyed a lovely lunch in truly beautiful settings. The staff coped well with a sudden storm and the accompanying deluge of rain when everyone was dining outside but the restaurant itself was equally charming so hardly spoiled the meal at all"
    dined on 25/07/2014
  • "I have had a lovely lunch with my daughter. The food was delicious and the service excellent. We sat outside which was so relaxing that we stayed much longer than usual. All the staff were very helpful and the service was unobtrusive. I would definitely recommend this restaurant."
    dined on 25/07/2014
  • "The restaurant is in a lovely setting and gorgeous for an al fresco lunch on a sunny, summer day. The food is very good and the staff friendly. Great for an 'occasion' meal or a treat."
    dined on 24/07/2014
  • "A few years ago this used to be a little stuffy & although the food was excellent, you were left feeling wanting. However it's changed for the better in recent years & we celebrated our wedding at The Auberge du lac & decided to return for our anniversary last weekend. As it was fabulous weather we were able to eat on the terrace over looking the lake & Brocket Hall, all very romantic. The food was still superb & thankfully the service was absolutely delightful."
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "This was our second visit to the restaurant. The location is beautiful with a lake and swans. Drinks on the terrace on a warm evening started the evening off nicely. The taster menu was of excellent quality however the service was a little slow and there were delays between courses. Didn't spoil our evening though..."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Best to go on a sunny summer's day......otherwise, any other day will do....."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Great menu choice, food good but not spectacular given top London prices. Tuna tartare was pleasant but lacking any real depth of flavour. Beef cheek was lovely and tender, filet cooked well but lack of any any jus/sauce made it a bit dry and unexciting. My wife had a fantastic poached egg & Gouda starter. Half the restaurant lacks windows/atmosphere, so be careful with table choice. The sommelier was first class and recommended a really great wine that was good value. Service a bit uncomfortable, the waitress appeared every 5-10minutes to ask if we were OK, so by the end of the meal it felt like we kept being interrupted. A nice experience and nice food, but expect a bit more in terms of flavour and more intuitive service for those prices."
    dined on 11/07/2014
  • "The Auberge is a beautiful place, by a lake in parkland. Add to that views of the lake from the restaurant and some very good food and you have a lovely place. The service is keen and friendly and the sommelier makes excellent choices if you want him to."
    dined on 04/07/2014
  • "Excellent location, good service and nice but not truly exceptional food. Offers a good choice of wine by the glass recognising that a bottle is too much for two diners one of whom is driving."
    dined on 01/07/2014
  • "The food, ambience and service were great. Even though a builder had drill into a gas pipe which limited the menu options they coped magnificently and compensated us with a complimentary aperitif. It is the measure of a good restaurant when they can still deliver great service even with unexpected difficulties."
    dined on 01/07/2014
  • "What a lovely meal... I came here for an anniversary meal with my girlfriend and we were not disappointed. The setting, the food, and the service was top draw. The location is cosy and romantic, and the taster menu is delicious! Couldn't recommend highly enough!"
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "Having eaten here last year we were disappointed by the recent visit as the food and service were a little lacklustre. The only exception was the fantastic Spanish sommelier who couldn't have been more helpful. The setting is also exceptional"
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "A midsummer birthday celebration.....champagne on the terrace, great food. Only downside was the slightly delayed arrival of the main course."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Excellent food and wine; tasting menu good value for money. 2 wonderful (though expensive) bottles of wine and charming sommelier who offered us tastes of delicious dessert wine too."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "We went to Auberge du lac for a special occasion. The location is, of course, fantastic and we had luck with the weather - cocktails on the terrace! As ever the service was very good (just missed outstanding because the somelier kept putting the wine down in a rush and then telling us "I'll be back in a minute to tell you about it." He did come back, but we found this irritating.) The food was amazing, we particularly liked the sea trout tartare and the lamb (which we had asked to be substituted for the belly pork course). The cheeses were also outstanding. The favourite wine had to be the Gevrey-Chambertin - heaven in a glass. It was an expensive evening out, but well worth the money, for an occasional celebration."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "I have been to Auberge many a times before and suggested to my two friends that we go for lunch. The dining experience begins as you enter the beautiful grounds. My friends, both first timers, fell in love with Auberge even before we had sat down to eat! We had our aperitif drinks outside taking in the glorious surroundings. We had the three course set menu. It was divine! Service was first rate: attentive but not over the top. It was the perfect lunch: beautiful surroundings, good company, great food and excellent service!"
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "The experience started with the table position. I was sat facing a huge tv. It was Ascot ladies day but we were watching "Come Dine with Me". Why would I book an expensive restaurant to sit and watch this programme about other peoples food? The table we were directed to was in the far corner, we were not offered any other choices. Why was that? The food was up to the quality and taste experience we were expecting but I would have thought more "special" treats could have been given. For example I elected for the cheese (plus £6 option). I wasn't given a cheese board to choose but rather just hard or soft. No butter option and very sadly no celery to clear true pallet nor grapes to accompany. The coffees we had were served in a mug."
    dined on 19/06/2014
  • "Although the ambience and food were 1st class on this visit the service was extremely slow and poor. There was a table that the maitre d fawned around most of the time so we were unable to have desert wine and brandies to round off our lunch. it took almost 30 minutes to get our bill paid. My advice is to dine inside the restaurant rather than outside on the terrace, the service is far superior."
    dined on 12/06/2014
  • "Overall fabulous but we waited about 15 minutes for a drinks order to be taken on the terrace and a further 25 for the drinks to arrive, my husband had to go and find a waiter to ask where the drinks were ... poor start but delicious food, cheeseboard awesome. Maitre d' apologised at the end of the evening about the wait, saying it was because they were 'busy' !!! At £500 for four I would not expect this as an excuse, especially dining at an establishment such as Auberge. "
    dined on 07/06/2014
  • "We always enjoy the food and ambience - and were impressed that the restaurant remembered personal details (albeit slightly jumbled) from our previous visit. We got the impression that there had been a change of management (although many of the staff were familiar) and there were clearly fewer midweek lunch diners than we had seen previously. I hope this does not augur badly for this restaurant."
    dined on 04/06/2014
  • "We have been coming to this restaurant for the past 8 years and have always had a fantastic time. What has happened? The food was as good as ever but the front of house completely let down the chefs. We did not have a dedicated waitress and at one point we were left for 15 minutes with nothing to drink (water or wine) and eventually had to find our own wine to refill our glasses. When you are paying so much for your evening you do not expect this. "
    dined on 31/05/2014
  • "The food is innovative and expertly prepared. But after waiting for 20 mins for a menu and 40 mins for our barely warm main course (which had obviously been sitting on the pass for too long), a further 30 minute wait after ordering dessert led me to just ask for the bill. Instead, the waitress arrived with the ice cream dessert - now almost melted and with the accompanying madeleines almost cold. All the maitre d' could do was to waive the 10% service charge and claim that they try to do their very best to provide a good service. Clearly though, that effort doesn't result in the desired outcome. Excellent though the food was (if it had arrived at the correct temperature) it cannot justify the prices charged here without good service. "

  • "Having eaten at Auberge Du Lac several times previously it was disappointing to find the food mediocre, the service poor and the ambience far from relaxing (we did move tables to improve this). The new chef has some work to do and the team need to reinstate some basic service principles. "
    dined on 17/05/2014
  • "had the 3 course set lunch wonderful food and setting weather was great so we sat outside by the water it was special."
    dined on 17/05/2014
  • "We were a little disappointed on this visit to Auberge, as neither the service or the food was up to the previous standard we've experienced. We were left waiting a long time for both our drinks requests (the wine for the meal only came when we were already one course in!), with slightly lame excuses instead of an honest apology! The food was very nice, but not the great quality we'd expect from Aurberge, or for the price tag! Overall though, the fantastic ambience and setting was enough to mean that we still enjoyed our visit, but our enthusiasm for the restaurant is sadly a little blunted by the experience. A few issues to resolve, whereas on previous visits (last one a couple of years ago) we've had a great time."
    dined on 16/05/2014
  • "We have used this restaurant for nearly 10 years now and I am sorry to report a decline that will stop us from returning. Our liver parfait was nice even if a little hot but the mains were a disaster for both of us. My husband's pork dish was tough and my turbot could have been any fish and a little cold in the middle - too undercooked. The desserts were fine. Next door table also suffered with the wrong food delivered. I was asked how I enjoyed my meal and told they will adjust the bill. I was promised that next time they will do better. If this is the a la carte performance the chef should control his kitchen better. It was just a disappointment. and the only benefit here was the view. "

  • "Auberge Du Lac is suitable for special occasions. I took my 20 yr old daughter for her birthday and she enjoyed it. The staff we're welcoming and attentive throughout the meal. The food was made and presented to a high standard. The attention to detail was second to none. Although the portions are small, there was more than enough with the added bread and petit fours to make you feel satisfied. The prices do appear to be on the expensive side but when you consider the time and expertise put in from Chef Marcus Mcguiness and his team, the food is worth every penny. "

  • "At £30 a head for three courses (£25 for two), the set lunch menu at Auberge du Lac represents terrific value. You won't find better food anywhere else in Hertfordshire, with original flavour combinations, imaginative use of seasonal produce and elegant presentation more than a match for some of the more stratospherically priced Central London restaurants. Combine this with a beautiful lakeside setting (even on a grotty, rainy afternoon), and friendly but discreet service, and you're on to a winner. It was good to see the restaurant so busy on a Saturday lunchtime, and we'll certainly be back soon. "

  • "Booked for my mother's 79th birthday lunch. The summer set menu was incredible value , delicious and well cooked- pollock was just right. The additions of artisan breads and later petit fours were delightful!. The service was excellent and nothing was too much bother they even took my mother ( who found the stairs downstairs very steep) back up to ground level in a golfing buggy."
