The food was well presented and tasty, the staff polite and attentive. We ate on a Saturday night and were placed adjacent to a large party, so the ambience was not as pleasant as if we had been in a quieter location. I would have thought a restaurant like this might have private dining facilities for larger parties. The prices were a surprise when compared with similar one star Michelin restaurants.

The lunch menu du jour was inventive, tasty and surprisingly filling. We washed it down with a glass of quality wine and enjoyed the attentive and personable service from the staff. The restaurant is lovely; just what you'd expect from a quality venue and with lovely views of the Brocket Hall lake. One day we would like to return for evening meal.

We attended Auberge Du lac on a Saturday night for a quiet birthday dinner. The staff were as always available to meet our every need and highly charming. The food was of the highest culinary standard and the individual components all delicious. If I had an issue is that whilst the portions were not large the food was extremely rich and I would have preferred less butter and fats and more fresh vegetables. That being said I look forward to dining at the restaurant again.

We had the six course tasting menu along with the accompanying wines. The food and wines were all great. We both really enjoyed the venison and the cheese. My only criticism was for a £300 evening for two the service should have been impeccable and it could have been improved and varied between staff. Twice food arrived before the wine and once we had to ask for the wine. Most staff explained each course in detail but one waitress described the monk fish as her personal favourite and we would have preferred to know what the sauce and garnish were. Also, the sparkling water we ordered was not left on the table and my glass was rarely refilled. In the end I had do this myself.

We are fairly regular diners at Auberge and generally the service and food is good. Unfortunately this time we were left disappointed. My husband received his pre-dinner drink 5 mins after mine, I was given an amuse bouche and he wasn't, and some courses were just given with no explanation as is normal with taster menus. I think Auberge need to try a bit harder as the cost does not fit the quality at present.

The four of us had the 9 course tasting menu. The chef adapted it for one of our party who does not eat meat. There were some definite highlights including the crab and the tiramisu courses. The 62 degree egg is an experience but I am not sure any of us will repeat that one. The waitress was helping and knowledgeable.

Way too many whipped dishes (amuse bouche, fois gras ice cream and iced Roquefort - that's 3!! And later a tiramisu.) And the amuse bouche tasted like beef stock whipped with cream. There were no 'layers' of flavours as promised. And too much if it, volume based. Too many dishes eaten with a spoon - was so happy when I got to actually chew something. The soft polenta had me in stitches. It was porridge. In the middle of a meal. Porridge! I tried all of the 9 dishes of the tasting menu and would recommend 3 - the monkfish, the cheek of beef (the other beef thing was just pure fat) and the Bergamot Lemon Parfait.

Presentation, textures, and flavours all there to a high standard. This is Michelin- star standard food in a pretty setting on the lake .I use Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir as my personal yardstick in restaurants of this standard . Chef Marcus McGuiness has been there about a year now and has made the impressive impact his culinary skills and background always suggested they would. Highly recommended.

We wanted to eat somewhere special for our anniversary and this was exactly what we were after. Beautiful location with aperatifs by the lake and dinner overlooking it, I can imagine it is only more specacular in the summer. We went all out for the tasting menu with tasting wine and it was amazing. The food combinations were imaginative but perfectly worked, delicate and rich without being too over the top. We had an excellent evening, and yes the restaurant is not the newest or hippest place to eat, but it is elegant and relaxed at the same time. Prepare to spend some money, but in my mind its worth it.

We went to Auberge du Lac to celebrate our anniversary. We found the service, setting and ambience wonderful - we had pre dinner drinks on the terrace overlooking the lake. We found the menu quite limiting - either a tasting menu or an 'a la carte' menu with a choice of only 5 dishes for the starter and 5 for main course. (3 courses was £60). My husband ordered braised lamb but received two small lamb cutlets, which we didn't think seemed good value for money. The dessert was really nice. Overall we had a special evening and would recommend it for a special occasion but would maybe try lunch next time.

Been to the restaurant several times but it's going downhill. As a start, tasting menu now only available Fri, & Sat. night. Went for the £60 a la carte lunch menu, food and service nothing special. I think if we go for the under £30 menu, should be OK but definitely not the more expensive menu. Our final bill is £265 for 3. When the waitress came to take the drink order, she doesn't know what Tom Collins is, had to go for gin and tonic instead, My son asked for Talisker but Tanker came, honestly! The restaurant is only 1/4 full at lunch time and full of elderly customers. Table next to us asked for the sommelier twice to recommend wine for cheese and they gave up eventually. I think we will wait a while before we returned.

The service was supreme. We kept asking our waiter (Adam) questions about the food and preparation and he was more than willing to engage with us. The staff were professional yet friendly and the food was sublime. We spent way more here than we normally would and the only reason was the great service and fantastic food. No regrets and we are already planning our next trip

The food was absolutely fantastic. We opted for the a la Carte menu and weren't disappointed. Service was almost perfect.......the waiter forgot to bring the bread that we ordered but we were given a freebie dessert wine to make up for it! Lovely atmosphere, plenty of space, no loud music. Sat outside for drinks, given the only table with no working heater and was freezing! Left outside for ages, although an apology was given and were told they were busy. Put in back room by doorway, so constant staff traffic going past us. "Summer of jazz" didn't start til nearly 3 and was finished in half hour?? Service slow, didn't like the scruffy, dirty festival wristbands (multiple) on one waitress who was serving my food. Roast beef was lovely but roast potatoes like cardboard, risotto tasty but such a tiny portion, very poor value compared to roast dinner. Only got offered a drink once, thank goodness we had a bottle of water for the table. The offer is good value if executed as promised, sadly not on this occassion, my anniversary!

Was excited to have a first visit to Auberge Du Lac, but on arrival, there was only 1 other table occupied - by a large loud group. Was not impressed to be seated right next to them (restaurant half empty all night, so this was a poor decision). Menu's arrived, and found myself slightly underwhelmed at the choices. The amuse bouche was not really suitable for the meal and far too strong flavour. Had Lobster rissotto starter, and wife had scallops. Risotto was average, scallops slightly undercooked. Main I had steak, she had lamb. The medium-rare steak came rare, and was very small. The lamb was spot on. Pre-desert was lovely. Desert menu was poor. deserts were underwhelming. I expect Auberge to lose its star if this is the standard.

So - another great meal at Auberge. Starters were lobster raviioli and sea bass carpaccio - exceptional presentation and suitably delicious. Mains were roasted monkfish and beef with liqorice - again, delicious. Deserts were exceptional also - pain perdu with early grey ice cream and a raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake. Service is, as always, very good indeed - attentive but not too fussy. Great food, great service. And of course, an idyllic location. Perhaps £160 for lunch for two - including a G&T and two glasses of wine - is a little spicy - but we did choose the a la carte menu (as opposed to the set lunch menu) - but you get what you pay for. We enjoyed it thoroughly. Make the trip. You'll enjoy it!

After reading some negative reviews it was with trepidation that we returned to auberge for a celebratory lunch. We could not have been happier - friendly and attentive service (which is an improvement in our view from any visit we have made over the years), amuse bouches, and palate cleansers between courses, a good range of wine pricing, including very reasonable wine by the glass, superb food that excited our interest with flavours and presentation. It was a sunny day so pre-drinks by the lake which was particularly delightful, and ended with coffee and petit-fours in the upstairs sitting room (at our request). Overall the fabulous celebratory lunch we were hoping for.

What a fabulous setting ( first impressions matter ) and it doesn't disappoint ! We went to lunch on a lovely day hoping we weren't left with the feeling that we wished we'd stayed at home ( which is often the case ) but not here! We had a beautiful meal with superb little nibbles, pallet cleanser, breads and treats with coffee all little extras that enhanced our lovely meal . Excellent service ( nothing was too much trouble) by really knowledgeable staff helped make for a great get away from it all extra special lunch ! We will definitely be back I have been before and wanted my husband to see for himself and he now agrees it's a must on your to do list ! We won't leave it long as we've planned on taking friends already !

Having eaten on serval occasions at the Auberge Du Lac my last visit was very disappointing. The table cloth had an iron mould stain which was pointed out to the waiter and while saying he would mention it to the laundry department he did nothing to put a clean cloth on the table. The stones from the olives were not removed from the table until the dessert. The dessert wine did not arrive until our desserts were almost finished. We had to ask for more water as the waiters were not particularly attentive. These points were made to the manager who wasn't overly apologetic which implied to me that he had heard it all before!!

The location and ambience of the Auberge du Lac is, as always, superb but alas the standards of this restaurant have seemingly fallen in recent times especially in relation to its wines and service. It has an impressive wine list but on my most recent visit none of the first three choices of wine were available and the serving of wines did not keep pace with the food courses. The menu, albeit for lunch, was this time limited. Overall a disappointing experience from, hitherto, one of my favourite restaurants.

We have been here many times and it recently took a dip in standard after the chef changed, We are pleased to see that the dip has ended and our meal was excellent, especially the starter and main course which were easily Michelin one star standard. The sweets were good but not quite up to the same standard. Get these up to the same excellent and very tasty standard as the first two courses and the Michelin Star will return, as we will in 2 weeks time with two guests. Keep up the great cooking - we loved it!

My wife & I have been customers of Auberge du Lac for some years now. It is a pity that their Michelin Chef left last year. His replacement has improved since arrival but it is still not as good as it was. Prices of the wine list has also risen considerably in my view. I get the impression that Auberge du Lac is concentrating on the Business lunch expense account brigade. This is a pity as for us older retired people the Auberge du Lac restaurant used to be the best in Hertfordshire. It has gone off the boil a bit seeking those with large bank accounts?
