  • "We went to the Sunday supper club and although we knew it was a set menu it wasn't made clear that there were no options. As nice as the food was, its a shame when everyone had to eat the same thing!"

  • "Friday lunch at Bistro Union - three of us shared three starters which were all excellent, potted duck with sour cherries particularly good. Two of us ordered steak with a mushroom ketchup (delicious), while the other order of sticky beef ribs came with a jug of gravy to dunk the succulent meat. A good green salad, some chips and a bottle of Gamay completed our meal, as we were too full for dessert! I would recommend this place for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly service - though if you're ordering steak you need to bring a healthy appetite as portions are generous!"

  • "The range of small starters is by far the restaurant's biggest winner; whilst perhaps a fraction expensive, the portion sizes were generous. The menu was somewhat limited, although the main-for-two options were very good, especially the roast chicken. The pudding menu poor, although it seemed seasonal, so there may be more choice at different times of the year."

  • "a really good place- good food, good people. run by some folks who are serious and gently enthusiastic about food but completely unpretentious. loved it- having said that- pricey. a bit of a blow out for approx £50+ per head for lunch..."

  • "We eat here on a regular basis and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. The choice of snacks and starters is always very good, along with the fresh fish main course. Staff are very friendly. A great local restaurant."

  • "We'd been to bistro union a few months ago and had a fantastic meal. Therefore we were really looking forward to another visit but will now not be returning. The wine was warm, the service chaotic, food average and we had a bad table in the walkway from the kitchen. It just lacked the edge which it had before and we were very disappointed."

  • "Very nice food and excellent service in the increasingly badly kept secret that is Abbeville Village. The menu contains a relatively large section of snack-size dishes (most of them changing daily), you can sample quite a few before you're overly full... and then just eat more, like we did..."

  • "Good food, nice tho small place. Not a huge variety to choose from, but yummy."

  • "I came here for a birthday brunch and was slightly disappointed with the disorganised way we were greeted, and then sat at a table that was crammed down the side of the bar and seemed to be in the way of everyone who needed to get past from the back of the restaurant or those coming in. I had expected to be at a slightly better table given that I'd booked, and there is quite a large space at the back with more tables. However the slow service and less than ideal table placement was more than made up by the absolutely outstanding food that came out relatively quickly after we'd ordered. The fry-up is by far the highlight of the menu and worth a trip to experience. The service improved after the usual lunchtime rush and we left happy."

  • "Our local favourite never disappoints! The food is great and the friendly, energetic atmosphere makes ths a perfect place to spend an evening!"

  • "It has been a while since we went to Bistro Union and we are never disappointed. In saying that. we think the menu could do with a bit of a refresher as it is starting to feel a bit old. Still divine food, lovingly prepared with local produce!"

  • "The big let-down was in the service with at least 1 waitress not really having a clue what was going on. It felt like she had just been put there and asked to smile when talked to. With such great culinary offering you'd expect some interest from the person who serves the food but here I'm not sure they could even tell sausage from meatball! To be fair, at the end a waiter (who may have witnessed the spectacle and felt bad) came to talk to us, asking us what we thought of the food and talked at length and with passion about what they had on offer. I have actually never reflected on this in the past at such length but an engaging waiter really does the trick! So, overall the food was great but the service has a lot to give."

  • "We really love Bistro Union's big sister, Trinity but Trinity is a bit too special for everyday. The fixed Sunday evening menu at Bistro Union is an amazing idea for family dining. We came with our 2 year old at 6pm. The food was prompt (which is ideal when dining with someone who has limited patience) and delicious. The portion size was appropriate for our daughter and the staff were really helpful. Mum and Dad got to eat at a nice restaurant with delicious food while not worrying about babysitters etc. It was such good value I expect this will become a regular treat. "

  • "It's a lovely looking bistro with nice touches for presentation. The brunch menu looked great as did the evening menu but we had gone for Sunday lunch and the menu was limited and the food was average. 2 people £100."

  • "Just don't like this concept and would put me off going back also £1 charge per person for bread and carafe of water. Four diners, 2 had steak which was good. One pork , not nice and tough, one sausage again not good. Overall would not return."

  • "Great style: menus and glassware... ice creams in Kilner jars, salads in enamel dishes. Best for: innovative food /drink, we loved rhubarb gins, smoked tomatoes and snacks. I could have eaten more of these and skipped mains. Knowledgeable service: helpful waiter clearly knew every dish/ ingredient, didn't rush us. Not sure : Loved the way the still/sparkling water kept coming. £1 per head 'table charge' fair, I just didn't know it about it until the bill. Undermined the feeling of generosity. Would have liked: wider choice of light mains, some dishes hearty for summer. Only foot wrong: my mac'n' cheese not quite hot enough in middle. Overall an unusual and delicious menu. I 'd like to eat snacks and puddings here every evening if I could."

  • "Service is massively improving in the UK (in comparison to the US) after being so poor for so long, and Bistro Union is still a class above. The staff are always very welcoming, can't do enough to help, always smiling. It really makes a difference. Our favourite brunch spot in South London."

  • "I wish we had sonewhere like this in Richmond or Kingston. Great place."

  • "4 of us came for the Sunday Supper Club at Bistro Union, which is a set menu. The food was simple but delicious, and great spacing between courses. They have a bar but you can also bring your own wine etc. to the Supper Club. The staff were informative about the food, but some were quite stern (not rude, just not particularly friendly!) however this didn't interfere our experience, we still had a great time. I travelled quite far to come here, but I had some family staying in the area, so I'd recommend it if you're nearby. All in all, great food with fresh ingredients - you can check out their sample menus on their website."

  • "Highly recommended, would share lots of starters/bar snacks with friends to really make the most of everything!"

  • "We had been to the Trinity in Clapham and heard about their sister restaurant, Union Bistro. Atmosphere and service was spot on, love the bread that was brought, although we only had a small amount between two. When we paid for some more the amount was very generous. The main course of chicken for two looked incredible and tasted even better! So much food for what you pay for, will definitely be going back again"

  • "A little bit of San Francisco mixed with a dash of Hoxton, all served up with a side order of Clapham. Nice, social, local dining with easy food and drinks, very difficult not to like."

  • "As Bistro Union is a local restaurant the idea of trying out the Sunday Supper Club has been something we've wanted to try for sometime. We were not disappointed. The "snacks" as a starter were brilliant giving us an opportunity to try crispy pigs' ears along with other goodies. The main course was good and the idea of poached guinea fowl interesting. The leg and thighs were perfect but the breast a little overcooked. However, the flavours were excellent and well balanced with the accompanying green sauce lifting the whole dish. The portions were huge! The treacle tart for dessert was delicious without having the "burning" sweetness. A good meal with excellent service. The additional bonus of no corkage made the meal excellent value."

  • "Cute little bistro with good food. Staff were generally friendly and accommodated us when we had two extra people."

  • "Overall, a pleasant experience. Great location, a very nice interior and lovely atmosphere let down by slightly overcooked mussels and a higher than expected bill for dinner for 2. The steak however, was excellent, as was the chicken liver pate."

  • "We booked a table at the already highly recommended Bistro Union for 3pm on a sunday. And from the start we were not disappointed, the restaurant has a great ambience, the service was prompt, attentive and happy to please and the food was fantastic. Fresh produce, carefully prepared with a simple yet perfectly crafted finish. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Had been recommended this restaurant by family and the variety and quality of freshly and locally source food was superb. Went with a couple of friends and we ordered far too much but there was no way we were leaving any food. We left feeling very satisfied and I'd definitely go again."

  • "Though we were not expecting a set menu we really enjoyed our dinner at bistro union. We have been in the week as well and think the food and service is really good."

  • "We were expecting more from this place. The decor is quirky and it being a sister restaurant to Trinity we thought it would be really good. However the menu is a bit limited. For main we ordered Rib of beef for two. This took ages to arrive. The second problem was we didnt have steak knives. Another couple also had to ask for some. We only got 1 knife initially and had to ask for a 2nd. The beef was good and fairly priced. However - having had the rib of beef at the anchor and hope in SE1, it wasnt the "best" rib of beff I have ever had. The mushroom ketchup did not really add anything, but the smokey sundried tomatoes were a revelation. So overall - its good but could be better, particularly the service. Maybe some bernaise too!!"

  • "I'm sad to say that this restaurant just hasn't got it together yet. The best part was the cow's curd starter which was quite lovely. Cocktails to start were mediocre - negroni too sweet, the prosecco wasn't great quality. Mac n cheese lacked flavour although well presented. Mussels were well cooked, again lacked flavour. Chips tasted old. House red & Paper road Pinot noir disappointing. Sauternes was lifeless. Espresso martini ok but not sweet as requested. Staff struggled to keep up with service. We were advised of extra wines by the glass due to wine training that day, although staff couldn't remember which ones. We flagged down the waiter twice to ask for (not offered) condiments to have eyes rolled. No finger bowl for the mussels."

  • "We woke up early on Sunday, searched toptable and found Bistro Union. The staff are friendly and very attentive. The bistro is welcoming and comfortable (with a little bit of a modern twist). The brunch special for £15 (fry-up) including coffee and a cocktail is great value and delicious. We'll be returning to try dinner soon."

  • "Fantastic menu, quirky decor, attentive staff. I went with my foodie boyfriend but also planning on taking my more traditional parents. It ticks all boxes."

  • "Great food, great service Little pricy, but Clapham is just that... £85, 2people, shared a starter and desert (yes we had our own mains) with £25 for a bottle of wine Portions are very good sizes, atmosphere is great and friendly waiters. Yes id go again"

  • "So we went here for our Valentine's dinner. I first found this favourite for Valentine's last year and have been popping in now and again at various times of day ever since. Because it was a special occasion we just went for it with starter, a couple of cocktails, rib to share (so good) and pudding. All delicious as usual and the staff are great for a bit of banter but know when to leave you to it. They're super-helpful, fun, knowledgeable and clearly care a great deal about their products. They also seem to get on as a team brilliantly which helps no end with the atmosphere in this relatively small space. Love it. P.S. try to go when the malted milk biscuits are straight out of the oven."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Usually a good bet but I think they packed too many people in on Valentines Night and as a result service suffered. We had to ask every time we wanted assistance - to order food, to order desert, to ask for the bill - felt pretty unloved stuck in the corner. The food itself was good but I think they need to remember what makes them popular in the first place - Bistro Union is not a pack 'em in and trun tables quicly type of place. Also not helped by a particulalrly loud table behind us with a guy who had the kind of voice that you can hear above everyone else all night - not the restaurant's fault but didn't add to the experience! Not up to the usual standard"
