A word from Blackfriars Restaurant
Blackfriars was voted the best restaurant in the North East England Tourism Awards held in 2013.

Originating back in 1239 when it was built as a medieval friary, the restaurant served as the refectory for the friars making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK, steeped in history.

The 72 seat restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50 seat Banquet Hall and 12 seat Workshop running a range of courses.

Blackfriars was recently awarded 'Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle' by readers of the Independent, ‘Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has also gained an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

Salmon and watercress mouse was very tasty and rich although a bit too cold that was the only down point, rump steak was the best I have had ! cooked to perfection chips crispy and soft in the middle. Chicken was juicy and tasty. I will return soon as I think its fab food a real star of a place, keep it up Blackfriars !!"

  • "We visited Blackfriars (for the third time) for my fiancee's birthday. As usual, Blackfriars did not let us down! From our arrival where we were seated (whilst staff set a different table for us so that we could have a courtyard view) to help with wine selection, staff were attentive and friendly and made us feel welcome. The food (including the complimentary amuse bouche) was beautiful, with good portions and quality produce. The quality, service and ambiance provided means Blackfriars remains our 'go to' restaurant for special occasions!"

  • "We went for an anniversary lunch had not been before. The place looks great we were given a table in front at the bottom in front of the bar area. We ordered steak for Main course but were not orovided with steak knives. It was an incredibly warm day there seemed no air con- we asked for water and a jug iof very warm water was provided. As the lunch went on the area behind us was noisy with what must have been washed cutlery being thrown into trays it was really annoying. We had prosecco when we arrived but I wanted a glass of wine with my meal and was offerered just House - When I asked about the selection the waiter didn't know or offer a wine menu? the food was ok but not great but I felt disAppointed by the experience."

Could not fault the food although it was a task deciding what to choose as the menu as very appetising. For anyone looking to book this restaurant, do not hesitate. Note: Service charge is included in the price (I did not take notice of the bill so ended up paying for service twice)."

  • "Went in for Sunday lunch, but as a vegetarian there is no option for this (I knew this going in) which is a shame as I do love a Sunday roast. I had the spatzle which was nice, but the vegetarian options are limited to only two mains, and I don't think they change very often so it's not some place I would go very frequently due to limited choices. My partner said the Sunday roast (beef in his case) was very good. It looked great. The only complaint I'd have is that while service was generally good, they never asked if we wanted further drinks so we never got more than our first beverages which didn't even last through the main meal."

There is always a lovely atmosphere / buzz about the place and we were not disappointed when we enjoyed an early evening meal on Friday night. The service is outstanding - real attention to detail. Although a confirmed meat-eater, I particularly enjoy their vegetarian menu options - the current menu has baked falafel and walnut loaf with butternut squash puree and poached egg which was really nice with an excellent combination of flavours. If you haven't been to Blackfriars yet then go."

  • "I would recommend the Blackfriars to anyone who enjoys great food in relaxed, friendly surroundings. We had the Lobster to start, which was fantastic. We followed this with the Duck, as our first choice of Lamb had just sold out. This was fortunate, because I have never tasted such well cooked Duck. The occasion was my wife's birthday, and the arrangements I had made prior to our arrival were all in place. This was all topped off by lovely friendly staff. We will be coming back!!"

It is a little while since we have been (about 4years!) and I don't know if the Chef or management has changed but the quality of food and its presentation certainly seems to have gone up a notch. Service was just right - attentive without being over-powering. Food was beautifully presented, imaginative and cooked to perfection. Certainly will be going back. Although we ate 'a la carte' the set meals at lunchtime and before 7.00 midweek look to be outstanding value."

Service outstanding - we were half an hour late because of traffic but we were sorted straight away (though they insisted they had the table back at 8.30 even though it was half empty then) and we even got to order from the menu that stopped at 7 when we arrived. They didn't have any crab left, which was a shame, but we had black pudding to start and it was amazing. We had chicken to follow and again cooked perfectly (though the sauce was a tad too sweet). Overall we had a fantastic evening, which was made even better by the discovery of Durham Brewery beers - so good we had to go to the brewery the next day to buy a case!"
