A word from Blackfriars Restaurant
Blackfriars was voted the best restaurant in the North East England Tourism Awards held in 2013.

Originating back in 1239 when it was built as a medieval friary, the restaurant served as the refectory for the friars making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK, steeped in history.

The 72 seat restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50 seat Banquet Hall and 12 seat Workshop running a range of courses.

Blackfriars was recently awarded 'Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle' by readers of the Independent, ‘Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has also gained an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

Had no idea that the restaurant closed in the afternoon and that we were the last sitting so were surprised when the waitress came over and said they were closing in 5 minutes and our guests and ourselves had to scramble to get taxis to take us home. The food was nice but felt we got the tale end of the days food...good but nothing special...disappointed after all the reviews and anticipation for a great experience and wonderful food. We live in the US and had no idea what this restaurant was like ...none of our guests had been either...I don't think any will be back."

It did meet the expectations, staff was very friendly and the atmosphere in the restaurant very pleasant. We liked the quality of the produce and the fact that they are local. However, one negative point is that the size of the roast itself was a bit small (and also a bit tough), though the vegetables were plenty."

  • "Both our starters and mains were excellent, along with the complimentary amuse bouche. The food was slightly let down by the unimaginative cheeseboard for dessert, but overall I would thoroughly recommend. Unfortunately the ambiance was spoiled due to a table with a young child who was playing with building blocks which were scattered all over the floor underneath the table I was directly facing. All of the attention to detail was lost by allowing this in a restaurant - I understand businesses need to be accessible to all, but what's the point in creating a fine dining experience & then allowing children's toys to turn it into a nursery. There's a time & place for this, go to the Wacky Warehouse if you want to take your child out to eat!"

  • "Having been before we wanted somewhere a wee bit special for a birthday bash for my wife's sisters and we were so glad everyone had a great time. We were there at lunchtime for 5 people and as ever the food the ambience and of course the amazing staff attentive as ever. Clean plates all around and the black pudding starter is to die for!!! so thanks again for a memorable lunch and hope to return in the very near future."

  • "I have given 5 stars for most items but I was very disappointed after we had left to find that 10% had been added to our bill without us being asked. We were not asked when paying the bill if we wanted to pay this "discretionary" charge added. We had not realised that there was a charge until we checked the bill when we got home and we have since checked the web site which does tell you that there is a "discretionary 10% service charge" . I strongly object to having these charges imposed and being told what level of charge I have to pay. Yes the service was really good but as I say to have a charge forced on me that is a no no and would certainly influence my decision to go back."

I felt that the meal was let down by the choice and overall flavour of the main dishes (same was said by my companion) - I ate the falafel dish which was in desperate need of a sauce as it was dry and claggy after a while. However, service was excellent with the staff being very attentive and overall an enjoyable experience."

We did a 3 course early evening meal for £15 during Newcastle restaurant week and it was lovely. The food is superb quality and just the right amount - well presented with attentive staff.   • "Because newcastle restaurant week, we booked a lunch. There are many people today and the waiter is busy. I remember last time the food is served on wood plate but today is in normal plate. We ordered risotto and ham for starters and chicken breast and poached salmon for mains. Only the risotto we don't like, others is very delicious. The bread is also very delicious."

We were given a lovely window seat overlooking the courtyard and a complimentary glass of bubbly. I thought this was a very nice touch. The service was excellent with the young man who served us being helpful but unobtrusive. We had the 3 course meal for £18 which is great value. The food was traditional English and my husband was more than happy with his steak and chips. The steak was cooked to perfection. I had chicken which again was delicious. All in all, a very enjoyable experience, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Blackfriars to family and friends."

Salmon and watercress mouse was very tasty and rich although a bit too cold that was the only down point, rump steak was the best I have had ! cooked to perfection chips crispy and soft in the middle. Chicken was juicy and tasty. I will return soon as I think its fab food a real star of a place, keep it up Blackfriars !!"

  • "We visited Blackfriars (for the third time) for my fiancee's birthday. As usual, Blackfriars did not let us down! From our arrival where we were seated (whilst staff set a different table for us so that we could have a courtyard view) to help with wine selection, staff were attentive and friendly and made us feel welcome. The food (including the complimentary amuse bouche) was beautiful, with good portions and quality produce. The quality, service and ambiance provided means Blackfriars remains our 'go to' restaurant for special occasions!"

  • "We went for an anniversary lunch had not been before. The place looks great we were given a table in front at the bottom in front of the bar area. We ordered steak for Main course but were not orovided with steak knives. It was an incredibly warm day there seemed no air con- we asked for water and a jug iof very warm water was provided. As the lunch went on the area behind us was noisy with what must have been washed cutlery being thrown into trays it was really annoying. We had prosecco when we arrived but I wanted a glass of wine with my meal and was offerered just House - When I asked about the selection the waiter didn't know or offer a wine menu? the food was ok but not great but I felt disAppointed by the experience."

Could not fault the food although it was a task deciding what to choose as the menu as very appetising. For anyone looking to book this restaurant, do not hesitate. Note: Service charge is included in the price (I did not take notice of the bill so ended up paying for service twice)."
