A word from Blackfriars Restaurant
Blackfriars was voted the best restaurant in the North East England Tourism Awards held in 2013.

Originating back in 1239 when it was built as a medieval friary, the restaurant served as the refectory for the friars making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK, steeped in history.

The 72 seat restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50 seat Banquet Hall and 12 seat Workshop running a range of courses.

Blackfriars was recently awarded 'Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle' by readers of the Independent, ‘Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has also gained an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

Diner Reviews
  • "Had booked this meal 8 months in advance for 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. Had no idea that the restaurant closed in the afternoon and that we were the last sitting so were surprised when the waitress came over and said they were closing in 5 minutes and our guests and ourselves had to scramble to get taxis to take us home. The food was nice but felt we got the tale end of the days food...good but nothing special...disappointed after all the reviews and anticipation for a great experience and wonderful food. We live in the US and had no idea what this restaurant was like ...none of our guests had been either...I don't think any will be back."

  • "We went for the first time to Blackfriars as it is rated the best place in town for the Sunday roast. It did meet the expectations, staff was very friendly and the atmosphere in the restaurant very pleasant. We liked the quality of the produce and the fact that they are local. However, one negative point is that the size of the roast itself was a bit small (and also a bit tough), though the vegetables were plenty."

  • "First time at Blackfriars and was not disappointed. From arranging the booking and the follow up calls/e-mails received to confirm booking, the service was excellent and attentive during dining. The menu was varied and not overpriced for the quality of food. This is an exceptional restaurant in the North East and well worth the visit for a special occasion or a change to the usual Friday night curry."

  • "Blackfriars is an excellent restaurant, great place, staff excellent and food top notch."

  • "Both our starters and mains were excellent, along with the complimentary amuse bouche. The food was slightly let down by the unimaginative cheeseboard for dessert, but overall I would thoroughly recommend. Unfortunately the ambiance was spoiled due to a table with a young child who was playing with building blocks which were scattered all over the floor underneath the table I was directly facing. All of the attention to detail was lost by allowing this in a restaurant - I understand businesses need to be accessible to all, but what's the point in creating a fine dining experience & then allowing children's toys to turn it into a nursery. There's a time & place for this, go to the Wacky Warehouse if you want to take your child out to eat!"

  • "Having been before we wanted somewhere a wee bit special for a birthday bash for my wife's sisters and we were so glad everyone had a great time. We were there at lunchtime for 5 people and as ever the food the ambience and of course the amazing staff attentive as ever. Clean plates all around and the black pudding starter is to die for!!! so thanks again for a memorable lunch and hope to return in the very near future."

  • "The menu offered a great choice. The food was fantastic & so was the wine selection. The restaurant has got a lovely atmosphere about it. Staff were also friendly & the service was fast, despite the place being very busy."

  • "I have given 5 stars for most items but I was very disappointed after we had left to find that 10% had been added to our bill without us being asked. We were not asked when paying the bill if we wanted to pay this "discretionary" charge added. We had not realised that there was a charge until we checked the bill when we got home and we have since checked the web site which does tell you that there is a "discretionary 10% service charge" . I strongly object to having these charges imposed and being told what level of charge I have to pay. Yes the service was really good but as I say to have a charge forced on me that is a no no and would certainly influence my decision to go back."

  • "Great local food, excellent choice of local beer, friendly service, good value. What's not to like? Our party of four visiting from Yorkshire would certainly eat here again and recommend it to others."

  • "The Blackfriars lunch is simply outstanding. A very comprehensive menu of interesting options, all very competitively priced in the table d'hote option. The service is always very friendly and attentive without being oppressive. Superb! This was our third lunch at Blackfriars in a month and we will definitely be back."

  • "Latest menu up to standards of previous as you would expect of this "gem" Well done to everyone at Blackfriars."
    dined on 15/08/2014
  • "Lunch is £15 for two courses - great value - but then of course the desserts are irresistible too so you will end up going for three courses. All food exquisite and staff lovely - service a teeny bit slow but it didn't really matter in this case."
    dined on 14/08/2014
  • "Nestling in a secluded area , the setting of a friary, the old world charm, the good food and attentive staff made a very pleasing lunch venue. The fact that the ingredients were locally sourced, fresh and good quality is a big plus.Would recommend it and will return soon."
    dined on 11/08/2014
  • "Recently had Sunday lunch on two occasions. Each time it could not be faulted. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. The Staff were helpful and pleasantly friendly but not intrusive. I would recommend this restaurant without reservation."

  • "Once again Blackfriars ticked all the boxes. You can't go wrong here, one of the best places to eat in Newcastle and is great VFM. You can get a set 3 course menu before 7pm for as little as £18. However, it's not just the price, the food is of an excellent standard and I'd reccomend Blackfriars to anyone visiting Newcastle."
    dined on 06/08/2014
  • "Fantastic restaurant, especially for a special occasion. The choice, presentation and flavour of the starters and deserts are outstanding. I felt that the meal was let down by the choice and overall flavour of the main dishes (same was said by my companion) - I ate the falafel dish which was in desperate need of a sauce as it was dry and claggy after a while. However, service was excellent with the staff being very attentive and overall an enjoyable experience."
    dined on 06/08/2014
  • "I have gone to Blackfriars intermittently over the years and never fail to be impressed with the service and quality of food. We did a 3 course early evening meal for £15 during Newcastle restaurant week and it was lovely. The food is superb quality and just the right amount - well presented with attentive staff. I had my 25th Anniversary in the banqueting hall last year and it was fabulous."
    dined on 05/08/2014
  • "We use Blackfriras regularly because the food is always excellent, the staff are helpful and friendly without being intrusive and the ambience is very pleasant."
    dined on 04/08/2014
  • "Because newcastle restaurant week, we booked a lunch. There are many people today and the waiter is busy. I remember last time the food is served on wood plate but today is in normal plate. We ordered risotto and ham for starters and chicken breast and poached salmon for mains. Only the risotto we don't like, others is very delicious. The bread is also very delicious."
    dined on 04/08/2014
  • "Excellent food attentive service in comfortable and pleasant surroundings."
    dined on 03/08/2014
  • "Went for a friend's Hen night out, on arrival she received a complimentary glass of prosecco. Food was fantastic and great selection of wines. Staff were amazing, so friendly! They were very relaxed, letting us sit and enjoy our dessert wines and coffee when we're sure it was past closing time. We were visitors to Newcastle, will certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting!"
    dined on 02/08/2014
  • "I visited this restaurant with my husband on 31st July to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary. We were given a lovely window seat overlooking the courtyard and a complimentary glass of bubbly. I thought this was a very nice touch. The service was excellent with the young man who served us being helpful but unobtrusive. We had the 3 course meal for £18 which is great value. The food was traditional English and my husband was more than happy with his steak and chips. The steak was cooked to perfection. I had chicken which again was delicious. All in all, a very enjoyable experience, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Blackfriars to family and friends."
    dined on 31/07/2014
  • "In a word "outstanding". The staff went above and beyond to make our experience excellent. The food was amazing as was the wine selection- we particularly liked the recommendations with each course. I can't recommend this restaurant enough, we will definitely revisit when we are back in the region."
    dined on 26/07/2014

  • "Our first visit to Blackfriars and definitely not our last ! Salmon and watercress mouse was very tasty and rich although a bit too cold that was the only down point, rump steak was the best I have had ! cooked to perfection chips crispy and soft in the middle. Chicken was juicy and tasty. I will return soon as I think its fab food a real star of a place, keep it up Blackfriars !!"

  • "Excellent Service but ended up being ill after the event. could have been the seafood lobster"
    dined on 17/07/2014
  • "We visited Blackfriars (for the third time) for my fiancee's birthday. As usual, Blackfriars did not let us down! From our arrival where we were seated (whilst staff set a different table for us so that we could have a courtyard view) to help with wine selection, staff were attentive and friendly and made us feel welcome. The food (including the complimentary amuse bouche) was beautiful, with good portions and quality produce. The quality, service and ambiance provided means Blackfriars remains our 'go to' restaurant for special occasions!"
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "I chose this restaurant for my Graduation meal as it is a favourite of mine. You always get beautiful local food in a beautiful building/setting in a lovely secluded spot in the middle of the city centre. As a foodie it is my opinion it is the best restaurant in Newcastle."
    dined on 15/07/2014
  • "We went for an anniversary lunch had not been before. The place looks great we were given a table in front at the bottom in front of the bar area. We ordered steak for Main course but were not orovided with steak knives. It was an incredibly warm day there seemed no air con- we asked for water and a jug iof very warm water was provided. As the lunch went on the area behind us was noisy with what must have been washed cutlery being thrown into trays it was really annoying. We had prosecco when we arrived but I wanted a glass of wine with my meal and was offerered just House - When I asked about the selection the waiter didn't know or offer a wine menu? the food was ok but not great but I felt disAppointed by the experience."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Our third or fourth visit. We took our friends. The food was amazing, we all had different things, great service, usual high standards in everything. Durham Brewery beers are great."
    dined on 11/07/2014
  • "We came to Blackfriars for a meal after our daughters graduation. We had a lovely meal and the staff were friendly and very attentive. It was a perfect end to a lovely day."
    dined on 10/07/2014
  • "We visited after a graduation ceremony in Sunderland. We had not experienced Blackfriars previously however, we will be returning for other celebrations and events. Could not fault the food although it was a task deciding what to choose as the menu as very appetising. For anyone looking to book this restaurant, do not hesitate. Note: Service charge is included in the price (I did not take notice of the bill so ended up paying for service twice)."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "Went in for Sunday lunch, but as a vegetarian there is no option for this (I knew this going in) which is a shame as I do love a Sunday roast. I had the spatzle which was nice, but the vegetarian options are limited to only two mains, and I don't think they change very often so it's not some place I would go very frequently due to limited choices. My partner said the Sunday roast (beef in his case) was very good. It looked great. The only complaint I'd have is that while service was generally good, they never asked if we wanted further drinks so we never got more than our first beverages which didn't even last through the main meal."

  • "This is simply my favourite restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The restaurant is full of character, the service is outstanding and the food sublime. There is always a lovely atmosphere / buzz about the place and we were not disappointed when we enjoyed an early evening meal on Friday night. Booking is highly recommended to avoid being disappointed as its invariably full which is testimony to just how good it is. Thank you Blackfriars for another wonderful evening."
