A word from Butlers Wharf Chop House
With its stunning riverside location and views of London’s iconic Tower Bridge, Butlers Wharf Chop House restaurant just south of the river in Shad Thames provides a thoroughly British dining experience.

Head chef Gemma Hyjek's menu is a celebration of seasonal produce and classic British favourites: think Cornish mussels in Aspall Suffolk cider & leeks, roast red leg partridge with a parsnip puree and sticky toffee pudding topped with a dollop of Jersey clotted cream. Generous Sunday roasts with all the trimmings are popular, as is the famous steak and kidney pudding.

Head sommelier Ben Van de Meutter's wine list takes inspiration from the classic wine-growing regions of the world, alongside wines off the beaten track and an extensive selection of whisky, sherry and port.

For a relaxed and robust meal overlooking the Thames – including al fresco tables with breathtaking riverside views - look no further than Butlers Wharf Chop House restaurant.

  • "celebrated my 60th birthday with friends here for Sunday lunch. Excellent, wish I was 60 every Sunday. The service was excellent the food was out of this world, the ambience was outstanding. I adore Tower Bridge so where else would I choose to celebrate my 60th but here Fantastic."

  • "Came to London for a overnight stay as we do on every occasion we can. Booked the Chop House as we have been before for a birthday celebration. We had a lovely meal sitting outside as weather was amazing. Food and service as before was just as good. Would certainly book again."

  • "Excellent food, service and ambience. We had a lovely table with a view of Tower bridge. I did not like the eton mess though, I much prefer the traditional version."

  • "Had a lovely meal looking out over the Thames towards Tower Bridge. Staff were excellent - attentive but not at all pushy. Food was delicious in a lovely setting. Will definitely be coming back! Loved the whole experience."

  • "The Chop House is a great venue for good food and great service. I have had several group bookings for Sunday lunch and more recently my daughters birthday where they looked after us very well. One of my favourite places for London eating by the Thames and good value. Friendly, lovely food, amiable staff and great location. Would thoroughly recommend."

  • "Location and service were great, food was disgusting. The sole was badly cooked. Oysters too big and "milki". No need to be a Michelin stared restaurant to cook simple food!"

  • "We have been to Butlers Wharf Chop House a few times now and it never disappoints. The best tables are outside for a phenomenal view of the River and Tower Bridge. You can't book outside as it's first come, first served but the staff are so accommodating and it was no problem for us to have a drink at the bar to wait for an al fresco spot! This is a special occasion place; it isn't cheap but it's well worth splashing out once in a while. The food is excellent, the tables are far enough apart for comfortable dining and the staff are extremely pleasant without being overbearing. Can't recommend it highly enough. We'll be back :-)"

  • "Very nice food and great location next to the river. Not a great deal of choice for vegetarians though."

  • "Great location and service . The restaurant has amazing views. A table outside is a must . Staff are very attentive. Overall a lovely time had"

  • "We booked Butlers Wharf Chophouse as it was a sweltering day and we wanted to sit outside. Unfortunately they were unable to give us an outside table despite requesting it on the booking, but we had one not too far from the open glass doors and there was a nice breeze. The food was good, we were on the 3 courses for £30 menu, the puddings in my opinion let the menu down, but they kindly agreed to swap one of the options from the main menu. The wine list is not cheap, we had two bottles of white Burgundy at £40 a pop. The Sipsmith gin & tonic, "served in a Burgundy [goldfish bowl] glass, decidedly bruised over ice, accompanied with orange and lemon wheels" was the highlight, although at £12 a pop the bill ended up being a punchy £85 a head."

  • "Wonderful location - managed to get outside table though had to wait nearly an hour - but worth it in the end for the view of Tower Bridge and the tasty food and good service. Only negative is the 12.5% service charge that they apply to the bill. I would prefer to give a tip direct to a waiter"

  • "Great Sunday roasts, good service but very over priced wines and cramped terrace."

  • "We sat outside with a lovely view of the river the food and staff were great"
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "We sat indoors near a window--a little cramped (and a family of six seated right up against the outside of our window.) Sitting outside may have been better, but required a 30 minute wait (and we had a reservation!) Since we had an appointment to keep, we opted to be seated right away. Food was very good. [Note: our entrees came all by themselves on the plate...if you desired vegetables or starch, those were ordered as sides for about 4 GBP each.] Everything was prepared well and was certainly delicious. Service was excellent and the location was first-rate. Overall, we were quite happy with the experience."

  • "There were two in my party when dining here. We had the pre-set menu for 30 pounds/person. I was surprised that you could mix and match the dishes on the menu. The appetizers were too filling, maybe they could have had one less fritter. The entree was to die for. The dessert I had was underwhelming. Only reason I rated service fair is my friend ordered a side salad and the waiter forgot it, I find that unacceptable. I think this is a great place for a romantic dinner. The view of the Tower Bridge was impeccable."

  • "Horrendously overcooked and over priced steak. Wouldn't go back."

  • "Great food, great service, great view. probably a little bit too overpriced but apart from that excellent. Waiters were brilliant too."
    dined on 09/07/2014
  • "The food was good but not outstanding. Three of our table had Steak and Kidney pudding and commented on how salty it tasted. The side vegetables could have been hotter"
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "Starter overcooked. Main course - pork - undercooked !!! Dessert - dry. Service attentive"

  • "I brought my friends to The Chop House for lunch on an amazing summer afternnoon. A reservation in the terrace was requested and we had a fantastic view of Tower Bridge. I heard the fish and chips was amazing and it did not disappoint. Fish was fresh, batter was very light and crispy. The service staff were extremely attentive. i would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone for lunch, dinner be it a business or romantic meal."

  • "We had the sip smith set menu which came with a lovely cocktail, we both had salmon and then steak which was cooked perfectly. Staff were friendly and there was no problem that my dining companion was 45 minutes late"
    dined on 30/06/2014
  • "Our lunch started with bread so stale that I wouldn't have been surprised to see mould on it! It basically went on in a similar vein from there - cold Sunday roast, soggy cabbage, greasy yorkshire puddings. The view and staff were nice but other than that I would say it was a total waste of both time and money - spare yourselves the 'experience'!"
    dined on 29/06/2014
  • "The Butlers Wharf Chop House is an amazing dining experience, the ambience is spot on and the view of Tower Bridge if you are lucky enough to seat outside is just the best. the service and food can not be faulted. Had a wonderful evening and would love to go back there."

  • "Perfect evening out on the river lovely food, lovely staff and a perfect location"
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "We dined with friends from out of town and sat outside enjoying the lovely view. The set menu offer was good value, although of course once you've chosen from the extensive wine menu this bumped the overall cost up considerably. The food itself was pleasant and enjoyed by all, dessert not outstanding but did not ruin the evening at all. The best thing about our experience? Professional and unfussy service. They even provided blankets for the ladies when it got a bit chilly later on. Thank you!"

  • "Let's start off with the good point - location, even sitting outside in the rain, they had a heater and it was great to look over the Thames. The bad points: Somelier didn't seem bothered re options of white wine/set menu poor quality/no variety for vegetarians/couldn't change the aperitif from Gin to Vodka (which is cheaper) so it's probably ready mixed (at £8.95 per glass) and why they couldn't change it (still not good enough). Tasted like watered down Pimms. Food v. poor quality, dry, no flavour. Coffee in a cafeterie too watery. Mackerel Wellington was recommended but awful, dry and made me ill for the rest of the day/evening. Gave constructive feedback at the end of the meal, the manager listened, but not sure it was taken on board."

  • "Excellent food and service , lovely setting very much enjoyed the evening and will definitely be coming back !"

  • "My husband and I had dinner here to celebrate my birthday. We were traveling from the USA with our 9 and 7 year old daughters. My children are carnivores so the menu was perfect. They were treated very well by the staff and were served their own special "grown up" drinks by the bartender. The sommelier chose the perfect wine for our meal. Overall, it was a success. Thank you."

  • "We managed to get a table outside which was very nice. We arrived about half hour early and said could we eat and it was robustly pointed out that we only had the table for 2 hours no matter what time we arrived!!! Food very good, though they did not have our first choice bottle of wine. The waiters serving us were really nice however there were three women "supervisors" seeming to watch there every move often pointing to this and that, when one of the waiters brought our bill one of the women was there instantly to ask if we would pay now - very over the top. Otherwise a very nice evening."

  • "Nice restaurant and good food. Very attentive service, overall a great restaurant."

  • "Went here before visiting the shard, which is only 5 mins walk away. Excellent service, prompt but not overpowering. Very good food and we were offered an outside table with an excellent view of tower bridge and the hustle & bustle of the thames. Definitely a good choice for a special occasion."
    dined on 22/06/2014
  • "I used to really like Chop House. I mean I used to like it enough to visit couple of times every summer. Not anymore. Last Sunday I had one of the worst meals I have ever had. Our meal started with some cold and stale bread. To be honest the set menu only sunday lunch creeped me out a bit at the beginning, but the menu seemed to be similar to old Chop House classics. Starter of whitebaits was fried in a heavy (and not hot enough) oil. The octopus salad wasn't too bad (the only ok dish) The lemon sole was undercooked and came with a strange tasting herb butter dressing. The worst dish was the leg of lamb. The quality of the meat and the cut was just unacceptable for any restaurant to serve. Even potatoes were bad. Sunny london was the only +"

  • "This was our third visit to the Chop House and once again the food was first class. The steak was very well cooked and the chips are the best. Despite my initial disappointment that the apple crumble was no longer on the menu, the sticky toffee pudding was delicious. The staff are always attentive and friendly and, if you are lucky enough to get a seat outside (worth waiting for), it's lovely to sit and watch the people and the river flow by whilst enjoying good food and wine - and they have heaters for when it gets a bit chilly. Would definitely recommend this restaurant."
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "I've eaten here before a few times so recommended it for a "post-business dinner". Was really disappointed. The food wasn't anywwhere near as good as in the past. The starter portions were just incredibly small. I like I "buzzy" atmopsphere but on this particular evening it was just way too noisy in there. We seriously couldn't hear ourselves talk to each other on a table for just 4 people."
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "I booked this restaurant to celebrate my birthday we were a party of 6 . It was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The food, the view and the staff, in particular, all perfect. I would highly recommend this restaurant"

  • "I booked dinner here with my girlfriends for birthday celebrations. Food was great, we were seated outside able to enjoy the great view of Tower Bridge and had a fabulous night. Staff were very attentive (without being overly so) and made sure everything ran smoothly. We took advantage of the current offer available, three courses and a cocktail for £25. Great value; lots of different options to choose from for each course and the cocktail was an added bonus. All in all, an enjoyable evening. Would definitely recommend Butlers Wharf Chop House."
