A word from Butlers Wharf Chop House
With its stunning riverside location and views of London’s iconic Tower Bridge, Butlers Wharf Chop House restaurant just south of the river in Shad Thames provides a thoroughly British dining experience.

Head chef Gemma Hyjek's menu is a celebration of seasonal produce and classic British favourites: think Cornish mussels in Aspall Suffolk cider & leeks, roast red leg partridge with a parsnip puree and sticky toffee pudding topped with a dollop of Jersey clotted cream. Generous Sunday roasts with all the trimmings are popular, as is the famous steak and kidney pudding.

Head sommelier Ben Van de Meutter's wine list takes inspiration from the classic wine-growing regions of the world, alongside wines off the beaten track and an extensive selection of whisky, sherry and port.

For a relaxed and robust meal overlooking the Thames – including al fresco tables with breathtaking riverside views - look no further than Butlers Wharf Chop House restaurant.

  • "Had a wonderful last minute late lunch at the Chop Gouse with the children before visiting the Tower of London. We have been to this restaurant before but decided to try the Sunday lunch. We had a fabulous meal and the waiters Nick and made a special fuss of our 9 year old. We will definitely visit again."

  • "Had a fabulous roast on Sunday, although the lamb says it feeds two people,in fact there is enough for 3-4 people as you get a whole shoulder Of lamb!!!! Not really a complaint, but I would have shared withe the mrs & mother-in law rather than having the pork. Mind you I suppose I had the best of both worlds eh?! Apart from that every thing was fantastic and the lovely waitress ensured we had a great doggie bag to take home."

  • "My husband and I visited the restaurant for the first and last time ever. When we sat down we observed that ours was the only table that was not offered bread. i asked the waiter for a bottle of sparkling water, a few minutes later he came back with 2 glasses of tap water. When my husbands knife was dropped on the floor it took a while for them to bring a new one back. I could go on but the more i think of the time we wasted in this restaurant and had to pay for the poor service it just upsets me."

  • "This is a great place to dine for both atmosphere and setting, being on Butler's Wharf and adjacent to Tower Bridge. It's a lively place in the evening and a pleasant break just off the tourist trail in the daytime. The service is attentive without being intrusive and the food of the highest standard. If it has any faults it is that it can be quite noisy when full in the evenings, and the outside seating is a little close to passers by, but most customers don't seem to mind that."

  • "I organised a farewell dinner for my best friend here. Booked though opentable mentioning this and requested us to be seated next to a window. We were seated in the outdoor area, where the view was just magnificient. It was a chilly day but we did not feel cold, with the heaters right behind us. All my friends were impressed with the excellent view, it was certainly the farewell dinner I was hoping to organise for my best friend. Service was a bit slow but it was a busy Friday night, and to be frank, if not for the fact that we were in a hurry (for our reservation at a bar), we wouldn't have minded the speed of the service at all. We were enjoying the view and having a great time. Food was nice, the carrot cake dessert was very cute!"

  • "Chop House is positioned on the Thames with a spectacular view of Tower Bridge & the City, which looks stunning in the evening. Using an Evening Standard menu offer, we dined on 3 course meal with 3 options per course, plus a glass of champagne for £30 per person. As starters we enjoyed the squid [a little too salty] and the chicken liver with bacon option [very tasty]; for mains Pork chop which was large and beautifully cooked as well as a Fish main [very succulent and plentiful], with a selection of ice cream desert + a pancakes desert [both ok]. A wonderful evening topped off with a surprise birthday desert for one of our party. Service was excellent despite the venue being very busy and the experience is highly recommended."

  • "We had the Evening Standard deal, 3 courses plus a glass of champagne for £30. Sometimes this offer can be a bit stingy about choice or quantities- not this time. All the food choices were attractive and plentiful. Service was friendly and attentive."

  • "I ate at the Chop House at the weekend and having looked forward to dining there was bitterly disappointed. My starter was sent back, my main course was predominantly a plate of pork fat and the poached egg with it was stone cold. Whilst the presentation of the dessert (carrot cake) was very quirky, it delivered nothing on taste. The trip was for a special birthday (so I didnt complain too much so as not to upset my mother-in-law) I really struggled to part with the money to pay for the bill....I wont be going back."

  • "I dined here with 5 friends on Friday evening. It was very busy. The service we received was not as good as on previous occasions. We waited a very long time just for our drinks to arrive, and the food took even longer. If we hadn't been enjoying catching up with each other, the wait would have been intolerable. When our food did finally arrive, it was lukewarm and I could tell it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. It was a shame as the food was well-cooked, and you could see that the staff were trying, but they were not coping well with the demands of a busy Friday evening. I would recommend coming here at a non-peak time during the week instead."

  • "We arrived early and received excellent attention from the wait staff whilst the restaurant was not full. However, as the evening progressed and the restaurant began to fill up, it was very difficult to get the attention of the wait staff. We also felt very crowded with tables right on top of each other. The food is only so-so. Aged beef seems to be the house specialty, so we ordered the roast rib of beef, which was good, but way too much fat and the chateaubriand was quite chewy, which was disappointing as fillet should be tender and melt in the mouth. Desserts were tasteless and quite awful. I think this restaurant relies heavily on it's stunning location and hopes that the customer's attention isn't too focused on the food."

  • "I went with my husband and grown up children. We had Sunday lunch, the food was delicious, well prepared and tasty, service was excellent. We sat outside-the views of Tower Bridge were exquisite. Will definitely go again and recommend to others."

  • "The view of Tower bridge as the sun set and the lights came up was fabulous! The ambience was only spoilt by a bird's dropping on the next table which stayed there while the diners ate. Not nice. Otherwise, a lovely starter was followed by a moderate main and a disappointing dessert. The hand cut chips were excellent and the gin and tonic was sublime! Staff were helpful and attentive, whilst being more than pleasant."

  • "A delightful evening meal for a family group. However, I would make the following observations,: a smallish 11 year old found the seating rather low (and was too embaressed for us to ask for this to be rectified). For a vegetarian there was only one option for main course and finally 2 scallops for a starter did seem meagre. But I would return."

  • "We went for a special Evening Standard cheaper-than-normal menu and it was great. Beautiful location (obviously); great food even though it was a special deal, and very nice staff. We didn't feel at all like we were being seen as second-class guests."

  • "I took two overseas visitors for dinner here, and they were very impressed and said that it was the perfect end to their trip to London. They are quite particular about things, and so that's praise indeed!"

  • "Having visited this restaurant on many occasions over the past ten years, both my wife and I were disappointed with the lack of choice from the menu and the quality of the food served. I had concerns as to what we might expect after going online and reading statements relating to the generous size of portions served. Fortunately for me the house speciality of steak and kidney pudding was on the menu, which was my choice. However it was much bigger than I remember and although it was jammed packed with meat it lacked taste. The bar area was catering for a private party so perhaps this had some bearing on our experience. But I'm affraid the evening was a disappointment and we will not be returning."

  • "Everything is just slow. Get seated on 7:15, the order was taken 7:50 (a bloody 35 mins). Then starter come 25 mins later. And wait another 30 mins for the main course. Told them is my boyfriend's birthday, they promise will do something but nothing."

  • "celebrated my 60th birthday with friends here for Sunday lunch. Excellent, wish I was 60 every Sunday. The service was excellent the food was out of this world, the ambience was outstanding. I adore Tower Bridge so where else would I choose to celebrate my 60th but here Fantastic."

  • "Came to London for a overnight stay as we do on every occasion we can. Booked the Chop House as we have been before for a birthday celebration. We had a lovely meal sitting outside as weather was amazing. Food and service as before was just as good. Would certainly book again."

  • "Excellent food, service and ambience. We had a lovely table with a view of Tower bridge. I did not like the eton mess though, I much prefer the traditional version."
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "Butlers Wharf Chop House was one of the worst meals I have had in London. The setting (location) is one of the best in London - facing Tower Bridge; sadly the food and service didn't stand up in any way to the setting. The staff were rude and inattentive, the food took a long time to arrive. The waitress didn't have a clue what wines were available or not. The starters were average at best. The mains were a little bit better but again average at best. The prices do not match the experience I received and I will definitely not be going back. The biggest problem is that this restaurant, as well as a lot of the other restaurants on this street, is owned by D&D so they don't need to care about service or quality as they have a monopoly. Avoid!!"

  • "The Chop House is a great venue for good food and great service. I have had several group bookings for Sunday lunch and more recently my daughters birthday where they looked after us very well. One of my favourite places for London eating by the Thames and good value. Friendly, lovely food, amiable staff and great location. Would thoroughly recommend."

  • "Location and service were great, food was disgusting. The sole was badly cooked. Oysters too big and "milki". No need to be a Michelin stared restaurant to cook simple food!"
    dined on 18/07/2014
  • "We have been to Butlers Wharf Chop House a few times now and it never disappoints. The best tables are outside for a phenomenal view of the River and Tower Bridge. You can't book outside as it's first come, first served but the staff are so accommodating and it was no problem for us to have a drink at the bar to wait for an al fresco spot! This is a special occasion place; it isn't cheap but it's well worth splashing out once in a while. The food is excellent, the tables are far enough apart for comfortable dining and the staff are extremely pleasant without being overbearing. Can't recommend it highly enough. We'll be back :-)"

  • "Very nice food and great location next to the river. Not a great deal of choice for vegetarians though."

  • "Great location and service . The restaurant has amazing views. A table outside is a must . Staff are very attentive. Overall a lovely time had"

  • "We booked Butlers Wharf Chophouse as it was a sweltering day and we wanted to sit outside. Unfortunately they were unable to give us an outside table despite requesting it on the booking, but we had one not too far from the open glass doors and there was a nice breeze. The food was good, we were on the 3 courses for £30 menu, the puddings in my opinion let the menu down, but they kindly agreed to swap one of the options from the main menu. The wine list is not cheap, we had two bottles of white Burgundy at £40 a pop. The Sipsmith gin & tonic, "served in a Burgundy [goldfish bowl] glass, decidedly bruised over ice, accompanied with orange and lemon wheels" was the highlight, although at £12 a pop the bill ended up being a punchy £85 a head."
    dined on 16/07/2014
  • "Wonderful location - managed to get outside table though had to wait nearly an hour - but worth it in the end for the view of Tower Bridge and the tasty food and good service. Only negative is the 12.5% service charge that they apply to the bill. I would prefer to give a tip direct to a waiter"

  • "We sat indoors near a window--a little cramped (and a family of six seated right up against the outside of our window.) Sitting outside may have been better, but required a 30 minute wait (and we had a reservation!) Since we had an appointment to keep, we opted to be seated right away. Food was very good. [Note: our entrees came all by themselves on the plate...if you desired vegetables or starch, those were ordered as sides for about 4 GBP each.] Everything was prepared well and was certainly delicious. Service was excellent and the location was first-rate. Overall, we were quite happy with the experience."

  • "There were two in my party when dining here. We had the pre-set menu for 30 pounds/person. I was surprised that you could mix and match the dishes on the menu. The appetizers were too filling, maybe they could have had one less fritter. The entree was to die for. The dessert I had was underwhelming. Only reason I rated service fair is my friend ordered a side salad and the waiter forgot it, I find that unacceptable. I think this is a great place for a romantic dinner. The view of the Tower Bridge was impeccable."
