A city centre restaurant with a city centre buzz. In the heart of Newcastle's Quayside, Cafe 21 has an excitement and warmth all of its own. Smart but not stuffy, sleek but not pretentious, fun but not gimmicky - It's about eating good food in comfortably stylish surroundings.

Cafe 21's food is big on flavour, short on fussiness. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are treated with flair and passion. classic bistro dishes, a little comfort food and still room for pudding. Cafe 21 is famous for welcoming guests with excellent value and warm hospitality.

  • Another great night at Café 21

Started with a pint of Writer's Block at the Broad Chare. We had a table for the 1st sitting on a busy Saturday night at C21. There was a great atmosphere and the service was attentive yet relaxed which suited our birthday party. Our friend tried oysters for the first time and they were a hit and the menu had something special for all of us. Transferred our coffees to the bar area to relinquish the table and didn't feel rushed. A lovely evening out. Thanks again.

We booked an evening meal for 4 to celebrate a birthday and anniversary. We have dined at Cafe 21 many times before (business and pleasure) because of its excellent reputation. On this occasion, we were disappointed. Although the meal was nice, we felt that the overall quality and portion size of the dishes did not deserve their heavy price tag. Recently, we have paid less for top quality meals at restaurants locally and abroad. We would probably think twice about returning in view of the improving standard of the competition.

We went for the early evening special and it was very special indeed. The service throughout was very friendly and efficient without being over bearing and stifling and each course was presented well and with ample time between servings. My wife started with Brocoli and Almond Soup which she described as perfectly seasoned and a pleasure as was my Venison Mushroom. For the main we both chose The Confit of Duck which was very tasty and again seasoned to perfection for our tastes. Both courses were quite sufficient. We chose a sweet to share and followed by Coffee. The cost with a beer and Bottle of House red came to just under £80 including service charge.A lovely evening was had and would re commend to all.

The food was good although the selection wasn't great. I started with scallops which where cooked perfectly, but they was served in a shell which made them frustrating to eat. In addition the balance of butter/cauliflower/bacon wasn't quite there, too much butter not enough cauliflower or bacon, so the dish felt over greasy. I then had the corn fed chicken with sweetcorn fritters, again the protein was cooked perfectly, lovely an moist. The only thing I could pick up on is that the jus was quite weak and would have liked a real punch. Dessert was a different matter altogether I had donuts and they was great very plain and simple but tasted great. I paid £70 (with 4 ales) so i would question the value as I can eat better/cheaper at Artisan.

We might not have been the most relaxed table as we had a train to catch, so our problems with the service might be more down to us than then, so I'm prepared to overlook that. Overall this is a fantastic place. And if you go for the set Sunday lunch option, wonderful value. The thing that comes across here is that they care. From the bread to the wine to the food. It might not be amazing cooking but it is extremely good. I'm not sure I would recommend if for a very special date, but then I'm not sure I would find myself in Gateshead on one. But I doubt anyone would find dining here a disappointment

We are regulars here and fund the restaurant goes through up and downs... We went Thursday oysters were amazing but my lamb was v fatty and once removed there was v little meat left. I was assured no side dishes required. A tiny portion of roast veg and an even smaller amount of wedges.. V expensive came home and had toast! I'm a size 8 so god knows how a larger male would have coped... Paid £140 for the pleasure... Looking for another regular restaurant following this meal..

We chose this for a special occasion due to it's reputatio. Maybe if our expectations had been lower we would have been more impressed. The food was all good but neither of us thought it was outstanding. Each course came rather more rapidly than we had expected which didn't make it the most leisurely dining experience. While we were having dessert the waitress was busy putting new tablecloths on the next table which made us not feel comfortable to sit and relax. The building itself is modern and lacking character, and the size of the restaurant also makes it feel not very intimate. I had 3 courses, my partner 2 and coffee, and we shared a bottle of house wine - it came to £100 and we think you could get better value elsewhere.

Our party of three arrived on time for Sunday Lunch to a quiet restaurant which duly filled up over the next hour or so…A drinks order was taken immediately and after some 10 minutes the food too. Some 25 minutes later after other tables had been served we enquired where our entree was and the waiting staff hurried away and returned with our food that had obviously been prepared in a bit of a rush judging by its poor wilted presentation ? …My guests ordered pollock whilst I went for something a little more conventional, the roast beef which I was advised would be served “Pink”….it wasn’t , and the veg arrived floating in hot water ! .We have ate literally hundreds of times at Cafe 21 , know the staff, however our first Sun LUnch ….Nick ?

The menu choice was not very exciting. It was nice but I was not blown away, it was all cooked very well, just NOT amazing. I Don't think it was value for money.

As very regular diners at Cafe Vivo and Broad Chare we tend to use Cafe 21 for something special and this was just such an occasion. Our table was ready upon our arrival and the complimentary freshly baked bread was delicious. The chosen wine provided excellent value. As we had enjoyed lunch earlier we opted to go straight for a main course. My wife chose the venison which was superb and I chose the end of lamb which was delicious - but I wish I had chosen the venison! Service was friendly and efficient. A first class meal.

Restaurant Week, so 2 courses for £15 was excellent value. We both had roasted tomato soup (beautiful), then I had hake served with a mixed pepper stew which was lovely, and he had minute steak, salad and frites (a perennial favourite). We added a couple of glasses of wine and coffee and the bill was £55 including tip. It's a bit noisy there (wooden floor and not much to absorb sound), but the service was very good and we really enjoyed our evening.

We had a most enjoyable evening meal here to celebrate my sister's 70th birthday. We felt that the meal was the best that we had had in a long time. Lovely varied menu suitable for all tastes. (My sister only likes plain fare so the roasted tomato soup and steak was exactly what was needed). My husband enjoyed the soufflé and the hake and I had the excellent salad and hake. The pudding were superb too.

Having eaten here a few time before Im happy to report that the service and food was as usual exemplary. Even though the restaurant was full and the corporate lounge was also full the service never dropped below perfect. The staff move around without being obvious, the food arrives, plates are cleared, wine served and orders taken without so much as a dropped spoon. Yet the atmosphere is not stuffy nor pretentious - there is a good happy vibe. Good food and good wine served with enthusiasm and a lovely smile, you go along way sometimes to find that but Cafe21 have cornered the market for me!

A vast range of options for each course on standard menu along with specials meant that our party were spoilt for choice. Main courses were excellent, mixed reception for the desserts. Service was average, let down by a lack of responsiveness or forgetfulness which was a shame; at least this was recognised and our coffee was free. We regularly attend the '21' establishments and will continue to do so.

Booked a table here for a pre theatre meal, being very close to The Live Theatre. The restaurant looks fantastic, the staff were pleasant, attentive and helpful. Possibly because I was so hungry, I found the bread and butter irresistible and finished our allocation so quickly that we we given a second helping. The food was beautifully cooked and presented.
