  • "Excellent food, good service and great value Sunday lunch. Best in Newcastle."
    dined on 25/08/2014
  • "Our party of three arrived on time for Sunday Lunch to a quiet restaurant which duly filled up over the next hour or so…A drinks order was taken immediately and after some 10 minutes the food too. Some 25 minutes later after other tables had been served we enquired where our entree was and the waiting staff hurried away and returned with our food that had obviously been prepared in a bit of a rush judging by its poor wilted presentation ? …My guests ordered pollock whilst I went for something a little more conventional, the roast beef which I was advised would be served “Pink”….it wasn’t , and the veg arrived floating in hot water ! .We have ate literally hundreds of times at Cafe 21 , know the staff, however our first Sun LUnch ….Nick ?"

  • "Having heard many great reports about cafe 21, i booked for saturday evening 9.15pm, but had to wait 30 minutes for the table to be ready, it was extremely busy. The menu choice was not very exciting. It was nice but I was not blown away, it was all cooked very well, just NOT amazing. I Don't think it was value for money."

  • "As very regular diners at Cafe Vivo and Broad Chare we tend to use Cafe 21 for something special and this was just such an occasion. Our table was ready upon our arrival and the complimentary freshly baked bread was delicious. The chosen wine provided excellent value. As we had enjoyed lunch earlier we opted to go straight for a main course. My wife chose the venison which was superb and I chose the end of lamb which was delicious - but I wish I had chosen the venison! Service was friendly and efficient. A first class meal."

  • "Food was excellent quality. Wine list overpriced. Wooden. Seats a little hard and slightly uncomfortable for extended period."

  • "We were really looking forward to eating at Cafe 21 having seen good reviews and receiving positive feedback from two family members who ate here a few years ago. The service was pretty good but the food was disappointing being quite bland and basic. We had anticipated the food would be of a much higher level of quality."

  • "We had a delicious 2 course meal which was served in a timely and friendly manner. It was 'restaurant week' in Newcastle so, understandably, the restaurant was very busy and perhaps noisier than usual. No problem. We'll be back!"

  • "Restaurant Week, so 2 courses for £15 was excellent value. We both had roasted tomato soup (beautiful), then I had hake served with a mixed pepper stew which was lovely, and he had minute steak, salad and frites (a perennial favourite). We added a couple of glasses of wine and coffee and the bill was £55 including tip. It's a bit noisy there (wooden floor and not much to absorb sound), but the service was very good and we really enjoyed our evening."

  • "We had a most enjoyable evening meal here to celebrate my sister's 70th birthday. We felt that the meal was the best that we had had in a long time. Lovely varied menu suitable for all tastes. (My sister only likes plain fare so the roasted tomato soup and steak was exactly what was needed). My husband enjoyed the soufflé and the hake and I had the excellent salad and hake. The pudding were superb too."

  • "The service started good and went downhill as the meal progressed. We had to wait an hour between starter and main course. My prawn dish was very poor with only 3 prawns and something unrecognisable on the top. The other 6 meals were ok and the cheese soufflé stater was excellent"

  • "Having eaten here a few time before Im happy to report that the service and food was as usual exemplary. Even though the restaurant was full and the corporate lounge was also full the service never dropped below perfect. The staff move around without being obvious, the food arrives, plates are cleared, wine served and orders taken without so much as a dropped spoon. Yet the atmosphere is not stuffy nor pretentious - there is a good happy vibe. Good food and good wine served with enthusiasm and a lovely smile, you go along way sometimes to find that but Cafe21 have cornered the market for me!"

  • "A vast range of options for each course on standard menu along with specials meant that our party were spoilt for choice. Main courses were excellent, mixed reception for the desserts. Service was average, let down by a lack of responsiveness or forgetfulness which was a shame; at least this was recognised and our coffee was free. We regularly attend the '21' establishments and will continue to do so."

  • "Booked a table here for a pre theatre meal, being very close to The Live Theatre. The restaurant looks fantastic, the staff were pleasant, attentive and helpful. Possibly because I was so hungry, I found the bread and butter irresistible and finished our allocation so quickly that we we given a second helping. The food was beautifully cooked and presented. We enjoyed the experience and hope to visit Cafe 21 again soon."

  • "The quality of the food, service and ambience of Café 21 is really outstanding. The staff go above an beyond to ensure you are cared for and well informed of what Café 21 has to offer. The duck is out of this world and I would happily eat this dish over, and over, and over again! For me, the menu is a little over priced and I doubt I would eat here if I was not client entertaining."

  • "Great place, delicious food and exceptional service..we loved it!!"

  • "Fantastic food - we all enjoyed every course. The Sunday menu is very good value at £22 for three courses."
    dined on 20/07/2014
  • "We always get excited to visit cafe 21 but this time we were disappointed - we were given a table in the private dining area - this lacked atmosphere and was really cold. The service here was poor - you had to pour your own wine and water and drinks that we ordered never arrived. The food was delicious but it didn't taste as good as the atmosphere and service lacked .... Come on cafe 21 - if your going to allow more diners ypu need to sort out atmosphere and service ... We won't go back for a while ...."

  • "Good selection of food and drink, busy Saturday night but food hot and on time. Delicious big Scallops to start followed by an amazing fillet steak - couldn't fault the food. Welcome service ok but felt rushed to table, decided to sit in bar area for a quick drink but then seemed forgotten about and had to stop someone to order a drink and give in food orders - this was the only criticism."

  • "I chose cafe 21 for my graduation without having been there before and I didn't regret it at all! Great food and great service! I highly recommend it and will definitely go again."

  • "It was my first visit and I was delighted with every aspect. The young man who welcomed us and showed us to our table, the entire service which was polite, unobtrusive, friendly and the personal attention of the manager. The food was exceptional, well cooked, beautifully presented and just right in quantity. I will be back and I have already recommended it to others and I will continue to do so. Thank you for it all"

  • "We arrived at Cafe 21 and were greeted and seated at table in a few minutes. Selection off the Sunday menu was very good. The service and attention of the staff was excellent even though there was a lot of people in the restaurant. The food was served quickly and very nicely presented."

  • "Absolutely wonderful as always. Atmosphere, food second to none"

  • "Took our son here for a meal to celebrate his graduation on the recommendation of a friend who uses Cafe 21 for business lunches - so glad we did! We had a lovely meal in a great atmosphere. There were lots of other graduates and families there so there was a bit of a party going on. The food was great and the service excellent."

  • "we had been told about Cafe 21 when staying at the Black Swan in Oldstead. in Newcastle for our nephew's graduation, so we booked an evening meal for 2 on a Friday evening. relatively busy. ordered wine and water. had to ask again for the water. my pork terrine starter came "& the toasted brioche is on its way". had to ask again for that and when it did vcome it added nothing to the dish. partners scallops served 'in the shell' which simply makes them more difficult to eat, she said. ordered a nice Carmenere which was pleasant but probably not worth what we were charged for it. with an extra glass of wine, plus desserts, the bill came to £141. in York, at Meltons, we'd expect to pay around £100 for similar meal. Marco Polo was better!"
    dined on 11/07/2014
  • "We ha a noon reservation for my sons 3 30 graduation as we couldn't do dinner. Despite early start the staff were great really friendly and put us at ease despite being first on restaurant. Food was great. Wine was great but the friendliness of the staff made the day"

  • "Great food and wine selection good price a little high but out waved my the food."

  • "Party of 7 all had starter, main and pudding and were not disappointed. I have not been anywhere in Newcastle that can rival the quality of the beef steaks and will be returning. I would recommend this restaurant to all however drinks are a little pricey."

  • "We went to Cafe 21 to celebrate a special occasion and were not disappointed. The set lunch menu was good value and had a very good choice. The service was slick and attentive but not intrusive. We all enjoyed our visit and would recommend it as a place to eat in Newcastle."

  • "Went to Café 21 for a birthday meal and it was great! Food was amazing and got great service from the staff - Allowed to relax in the bar while looking over the menu then through to the restaurant where there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely go back here and recommend to friends."

  • "I'm not sure I've ever dined so well outside one of Europe's capital cities. Every course was perfection; beautifully presented and a masterpiece of taste and texture. Difficult to recommend any dish in particular because, amongst the four in our party, we agreed that everything we ordered was spectacular - including the anchovy stuffed olives and the bread which were brought to the table whilst we were reading the menu. In fact, we liked the olives so much that we ended up buying a vast quantity to take home. The staff were friendly and efficient, and seemed genuinely keen for us to have a nice time. We did! If only we had not had such difficulty finding the restaurant, the whole evening would have been beyond perfect."
    dined on 02/07/2014
  • "Food not as good as at other local restaurants! Service poor - no need for staff to lean across people to deliver/ collect dishes. Disappointed to discover a caterpillar in the salad and with the Manager's response. Amazed restaurant tried to charge full price plus10% service charge for the experience! Sadly, a disappointing birthday celebration."
