A word from Café 21
A city centre restaurant with a city centre buzz. In the heart of Newcastle's Quayside, Cafe 21 has an excitement and warmth all of its own. Smart but not stuffy, sleek but not pretentious, fun but not gimmicky - It's about eating good food in comfortably stylish surroundings.

Cafe 21's food is big on flavour, short on fussiness. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are treated with flair and passion. classic bistro dishes, a little comfort food and still room for pudding. Cafe 21 is famous for welcoming guests with excellent value and warm hospitality.

  • The best Newcastle has to offer

Very good but not outstanding. Indicative of the Newcastle food scene still not hitting the heights in terms of food and service -- Cafe 21 has no real challengers and remains a front-runner. In many other cities this would be one of many very good restaurants. In Newcastle it is the best and therefore is never pushed to evolve. If it were a footballer it would be a midfield plodder -- gets the job done without too much panache -- would struggle to survive in the premier league.

It was our wedding anniversary so any excuse to go to Cafe 21 again and we were not disappointed. From the moment you walk through the door you are made to feel important as the staff are very attentive without being 'in your face'. Food was fantastic. I tried the pigeon breast salad to start which I thoroughly enjoyed and my husband had his favourite - cheese souffle. The roasted cod steak I had was beautiful and my husband was impressed with the quality and amount of duck he had. Too full for dessert but managed to eat plenty of chocolates beans with our coffees because as with the olives at the start as soon as the dish was empty more appeared as if by magic. Can't wait for the next excuse to celebrate!!

This was the first time in the restaurant and certainly won't be the last. From entering the greeting was quick but friendly and we were seated. Menus arrived soon after seating and drinks order taken. Everything was in a timely order but most importantly the food was excellent and an excellent range of wines to compliment the menu. Will recommend and will return.

We had a family meal for 4 on Saturday evening. Nice ambience, friendly staff. The crispy roast duck confit was absolutely delicious, definitely 'to die for'. I'd asked the waiter to ensure the duck skin was crispy, as on a previous occasion it had not been, and he promised that he would personally make sure it was very crispy, which he did! The others in our party had roast cod, (beautifully cooked and full of flavour), best-end of lamb ( succulent cutlets) and roast chicken (tender with a lovely fusion of flavours). I can highly recommend the gorgeous mini doughnuts with strawberry jam and chantilly cream for dessert - not to be missed! Will definitely be making return visits.

I've been going to 21's since it opened in Queen Street. The last couple of times standards have slipped. Service was slow and disorganised - eg brought one diner same drink twice but failed to produce drinks for two others! The food was poor for the price - chicken like warm ; bernaise sauce served as a dollop on top of the meat which might have been ok if the meat had not then presumably been kept under the warmer so it dried out; vegetarian option had 8 small mushrooms dwarfed by two giant slices of greasy brioche! Not coming back.

I had pre-booked a Sunday meal for 3.00pm which was well before the 3.30pm last booking. But from the moment we sat down the staff seemed more intent in getting us out, to the point they forgot to give us bread with the first course (only to arrive later). For them to crack a smile was well beyond them.

The lunch set menu was brilliant value and the food was of a good standard. The only thing which let this experience down slightly was the service. The staff were very pleasant but we waited a long time between ordering cheese boards and them arriving and for our starters. The biscuits were brought out but the cheese took another 20minutes.

My wife and I celebrated our golden wedding anniversary and were not disappointed with Cafe 21. Food was excellent as was the reception and service. We did have a couple of minor quibbles; it was rather cool at the bar window seat for our pre-dinner drink and we did expect staff to observe when our wine required to be topped up.

The venue itself is very spacious, and when we arrived there was only one other couple in, however it soon filled up and the atmosphere become more relaxed. Staff were very attentive and polite, service was quick and the food very nice indeed. Other places may do set lunches a bit cheaper, but this is a very good restaurant and worth the money.

We had been recommended this restaurant by friends living in Newcastle and we wanted to give it a try. We booked over a week ahead but only managed to get a 9.30pm table on a Saturday which shows how popular the restaurant is. We were not disappointed. We had the scallops and bacon for starter which were very tasty. We then had the chateaubriand which is pricey at £65 for two but well worth the money - the accompanying bernaise sauce (our choice rather than the truffle sauce) was delicious. After that we could not manage a pudding but finished with fresh mint tea. Extensive wine list. Even at 11.30pm the restaurant was still lively, and full of atmosphere. Highly recommended, but book ahead!

Started with a pint of Writer's Block at the Broad Chare. We had a table for the 1st sitting on a busy Saturday night at C21. There was a great atmosphere and the service was attentive yet relaxed which suited our birthday party. Our friend tried oysters for the first time and they were a hit and the menu had something special for all of us. Transferred our coffees to the bar area to relinquish the table and didn't feel rushed. A lovely evening out. Thanks again.

Whenever I visit 'home' I always look forward to dining at Cafe 21. It represents all that is good and understated about the North East - friendly, relaxed, interested in your well-being and provider of excellence in service and cooking. The fish soup and handling of fresh fish (like halibut) places it in the very top level of fine dining. Proud to tell all my friends and clients about the restaurant where I have never been disappointed and can bracket Cafe 21 in the same class as the much hyped restaurants in other parts of the country (e.g. Locatelli's) and above others (e.g. Rick Stein's). Outstanding value for money. I look forward to my next visit.

Me and my girlfriend recently visited cafe 21 and were sat right on a walkway where every waiter nudged the back of my chair, the staff moved us when we asked to a much better table. My starter was basically 5 or 6 slices of ham on a plate and a piece of burnt toast with what looked like tomato purè spread on top, this was priced at over £14 which can't be justified. My girlfriends stater and our mains of fish cakes and fillet steak were nice but at £16 and £30, way over priced. The staff were friendly and quick to help but the food was very expensive for what it was. Doubt I'd go back when the silk rooms is next door and far better value for money!
