  • "Some of the meat was tough but it was at least all tasty, but avoid the risotto at all costs. I was reminded, sadly too late, that the last time I came here (about a year ago) my complaint about the risotto was exactly the same. It's too stodgy (clearly made the previous day), and the only taste is of stock cubes, and not particularly decent stock cubes at that. Starters were fine, but came disconcertingly quickly. Felt like we'd barely finished uttering our order before they came. Probably won't return, at least not for a good while. The food is unjustifiably expensive without the TT deal."

  • "So close to Covent Garden, yet tucked away from the hustle and bustle. A real find in such a central location. Delicious food, at a good price- and excellent service as well."

  • "As three friends who only get together once a year, and were celebrating significant '0' birthdays this year, we wanted somewhere special to go after an evening concert. The location is great and the booking process was simple. We really appreciated the ambience of the restaurant and the attentive service. The food was delivered speedily to the table and was full of flavour. Not huge choices for vegetarians though, from either menu - perhaps this could be improved."

  • "My husband an I have been back to this restaurant on a number of occassions and we always love it. The food, the wine, the service, everything is great for the price. We have taken friends to experience the restaurant with us and we have been on our own, either way, we are yet to have a bad meal or disappointing experience. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "I was here when I was a student. Obviously, it is now more upmarket. The offer on opentable is great value with a bottle of wine thrown in. Despite it being very crowded the service was very prompt and good. Will definitely come again"

  • "A very good dining experience - they have fine-tuned both menu and the ore theatre dining to a fine art."

  • "We usually go to pre-theatre but had an evening meal on this occasion. Very busy, hot and rushed service. Food still good and good value."

  • "Waited an hour for our table. Pointed this out to the hostess who just shrugged at us. Once we had sat down at our table, 1 hour and ten minutes after we had booked, the service was excellent and the food very good. Shame the initial impression was so poor."

  • "Excellent food and with the bottle of wine ,excellent value. Portions not large but a very good deal otherwise. Staff very friendly and service very good"

  • "Reasonably sized portions provide rich and delicious meals. Flavours are perfectly balanced and the meals are not heavily bulked out with fries and salad. The main meat or fish portion is the focus of the meal and is generously applied to the dish."

  • "Very good value and location. Perfect for pre-theatre food"

  • "Went on 50% off food + free wine offer. Pleasantly surprised by quality of food."

  • "My first key point is that the menu displayed on open table is not what was on the menu at the restaurant. This was unfortunate as we specifically chose it for the froi gras and oysters, neither of which were actually on the menu at the venue- please update this. We had a 50% off deal which was outstanding value and the food was very nice. They treated my Mum to a birthday dessert with candle which was a lovely touch. Not sure how I'd feel if wed paid full price as the restaurant is quite loud an very busy so slightly hard to get staffs attention. But with a deal I'd definitely recommend it."

  • "Very busy. We didn't get seated until 3/4 hour after our time. Food was ok. The waiting staff however were rushed off their feet as clearly the Top Table deal was popular. The place was packed. No salt and pepper on the table. They forgot our water. I would go again at a less busy time as it is good value for money but the staff were clearly not prepared for the amount of covers they had and looked stressed. The overall atmosphere was stressy and I wouldn't want to go there again in that kind of situation. The bar is horrible. Needs a serious refurb, like some New York sleazy bar. Avoid it. Though the deal was good, we ended up spending more on drinks as we had to wait 45 minutes to get seated. It's ok but nothing special."

  • "We visited this restaurant with a Travelzoo deal. 3 courses and a glass of bubbly. The food was good but the portions were not over generous. If we had paid full price we would have been very very unhappy! For us the Walnut and Sultana bread was outstanding also the Lamb which was cooked to perfection. Service exceptional! Lovely to have linen tableclothes and napkins. After purchasing this deal we found that Cafe Des Amis were offering better deals than this one, but hey ho thats life!"

  • "We were looking for a reasonable place for a pre-theatre meal near the Aldwych Theatre. I didn't know of Café Des Amis but I saw it had a 50% off food with free wine deal. I was expecting to get a pretty bog standard free wine but we got a very drinkable Montepulciano and we both enjoyed our meals. Final bill came to £35 for two starters, two mains and the wine, excellent value as it was good quality! I had Moules Mariniere and they were good size mussels and a good portion. The only thing I would say was that it took a little bit longer than we were expecting and we had to dash to the theatre a bit but that was mostly our fault for not checking the time."

  • "The food and atmosphere where both nice, but the main courses did not at all stand up to the prices. The chocolate soup was very nice."
    dined on 11/08/2014
  • "With the 50% discount this place was fine but I would not pay full price for the food. Not particularly better than your average Cafe Rouge or Cote but priced much higher. Service was quite rushed with many waiters on you at all times. Would be good for a light pre theatre meal but not for any special occasions."

  • "Met 2 old friends for a very overdue lunch, our objective was a meal and a long gossip. Staff were very patient with us, waiting to take our order, not rushing us through courses and even better leaving us to chat for most of the afternoon. The food was very good more Italian than French, but as good as I had eaten in Florence the pervious week. Also with the deal it was great value for money. Would definitely go back."

  • "Booked the restaurant due to an offer I received via text, 50% off a la carte and free bottle of house wine. Arrived just after 11pm post theatre to find the restaurant were waiting on us as we were the last customers, except for a few stragglers. Greeted politely and offer was explained. Selected the house white which was actually a nice wine. A few items were missing from the menu, but then again it was late Saturday night, and more than enough to choose from. To start I had smoked salmon and my partner had the goats cheese and pear salad. Starters were received quickly and the mains promptly followed. Had a lovely piece of seabass and my partner had the salmon. We ordered extra garlic mash, but this was not really required. Recommended."

  • "We wanted a central location for friends to meet on a Saturday night in town. Certainly location & standard of food was very good indeed. We made use of a specific offer via Open Table which we all felt was very good and offered value for money. Our server seemed a little rushed and sharp but we could not fault the food or wine. Certainly happy to return and recommend to others."

  • "I couldn't resist but to take up on the 50% off food offer with a free bottle of wine. Definitely great value for money and the service was very good. The food was utterly delicious and I will be coming back again!"

  • "We were really looking forward to dining here as it looked nice. Four of our starters came (they forgot one) and then we asked twice for our drinks which we ordered on arrival but turned up as we finished the starter. The main course which came quickly so we had only just started the bottle of wine, was ok just basic and for a restaurant like this we expected it to be good food. Then when we paid the bill came and they had not given us the discount so had to send it back (which was the main reason for booking here). All in all very disappointing and there was no way it was worth the full cost they are charging at least we had the discount . We normally use this website to book restaurants but this time it was not good."

  • "I booked on the 50% off a la carte, plus free bottle of house wine. At that price, the food and the restaurant generally was outstanding value and just what we were looking for before heading to the Royal Opera House (it couldn't be closer). At the full price, I think you'd feel short changed - in essence paying a little bit of tourist tax. But, with the offer - perfect."

  • "Booked the 50% off a la carte and a free bottle of wine offer. Amazing value and a lovely little restaurant in a great location. Only criticisms; - white wine wasn't chilled - risotto was a little too al dente"

  • "Was not impressed at all by this restaurant. I presume the pre theatre rush gives rise to the pack 'em in, turn 'em around attitude prevalent during our visit. However not everyone is necessarily part of the theatre herd and the staff don't seem to differentiate. Despite going to the effort of calling a few days beforehand and having it confirmed that gluten free options existed we arrived only to be told that wasn't the case, not even the bread, and whoever informed us it was had made a mistake. Apologies from the waiter didn't really make the situation any better and there was no management anywhere to be seen. Having decide to stay and eat the food was passable but over priced. Will not be recommending or returning."

  • "Three of us enjoyed a lovely lunch last Saturday at Cafe des Amis. This is my second time here and will return. We were shown to our table upstairs, which I found better and less noisy than the downstairs dining room. Our food was excellent, well presented and tasty. The fee bottle of Montepulciano (red) whic went with our 50% off food offer was very good. The servers friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. All round great experience and a real bargain for the price, £85.00 for 2 bottles of water, a bottle of wine, 3 starters, 3 mains and one dessert plus 2 baskets of bread and inclusive of service. Excellent value."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Cafe des Amis, we were celebrating our 1st Wedding Anniversary and the waiter gave us a glass of Prosecco on the house! The food and service was exceptional and whilst we chose to sit outside which is an alleyway alongside a ballet school, the indoor restaurant looked very nice and would have good ambience I'm sure. I had sourced a very good deal for 2 people so it was exceptional value and I think it would be suitable for anyone to eat there, from a family to a large group and of course a romantic couple like us! We will definitely go again as we thoroughly enjoyed the food there (and the wine). Well done."

  • "I've visited cafe des amis numerous times and always loved it. The house wine is lovely, the menu is always exciting and the food delivers. I was sad to find that steak tartare was no longer on the menu, as this is my favourite dish here, but it wasn't difficult finding something else appealing. I had the wild mushroom risotto with truffle for starter, which waovely: a great size and full of truffle flavour but I don't believe the mushrooms were wild at all, but in fact button mushrooms which was a bit disappointing. I had moules for main which were wonderful and the staff were kind enough to provide extra bread when requested for no extra cost. Great experience :)"

  • "Our meal (two people) was outstanding value (offer 50% on food and a bottle of house wine!) and very tasty. Certainly brought back memories of living and eating in France. Would highly recomendate a visit (even without the offer). However, one thing really jarred - why put fruity bread in the bread basket. At the very least give customers a choice of bread since it has to be ordered separately anyway - rather unsual for a true french restaurant. Other than that it was a perfect experience."

  • "With the 50% offer and a free bottle of wine, this is not a bad deal. The service though was poor; gthe waitress knew nothing about the offer, the table was not laid properly (no napkin, no salt / peppper) and we weren't offered dessert and had to wait a long time for the bill."
    dined on 06/08/2014
  • "All good. Table was well spaced and not cramped or crowded, food was very good, recommend the tuna for main, service was very cheerful and not rushed. Good value on the deal. A good time had by all."

  • "This was not our best visit to Cafe des Amis Food was served almost too quickly but then plates were not cleared and getting the bill was like pulling teeth Starters were okish but had a bit of undressed chopped lettuce as garnish Mains of wet skinned sea bass came with "Bohemian vegetables" which was a bit of chopped cucumber and red pepper Zero wow factor I don't know if the chef was on holiday or they are trying to cut corners with what is a new menu but it will take a long time before we repeat the experience as even with the Opentable discount this was not good value"

  • "Cafe Des Amis is convenient for most West End Theatres and the Royal Opera House. We experienced exceptional standards of service and cuisine and will certainly visit regularly in the future. Great value with Open Table's special offers and highly recommended"

  • "Nice place. I'm not sure it'd be a great place without the deal and the service was a little off. But still, nice place."

  • "This is a great restaurant. The food is great. The toptable deal makes this amazing value. Perfect location. Not the 1st time I've been here and it definitely won't be the last."

  • "We went on a Tuesday evening and the restaurant was already really busy when we arrived at 6.15pm. We were on the 50% off food and a free bottle of wine deal which worked out to be good value - the portions were decent sizes, my friend enjoyed his ravioli starter and lamb main and while I wasn't too keen on the soup then my tuna main was really tasty. The food came out very quickly and so we ended up lingering for a while to finish our wine but we were under no pressure to leave and the staff kept on refilling our water and wine glasses. Overall, a decent place for a central catch up with friends or a pre-theatre meal."
