  • "Café des Amis is an island of calm on the edge of busy Covent Garden. Menu is varied and interesting and the current offer, 50% off a la carte and free bottle of house wine, makes it really good value. Table settings have a quality feel about them and spacing is good. Staff are attentive and there is always a buzz on the ground floor restaurant."

  • "Very good value on the 50% special offer with bottle of wine but whilst food is very good it's a tad expensive without the offer. I've eaten here before and wasn't disappointed. Service good and we were able to sit outside and were there for over 3 hours. Had to go find someone to sort our bill out at the end!"

  • "Pleased with service and food. It would have been nice to have some ice in the tap water. It was tues evening and we were served in good time before going to theatre at 7.30pm We had starter and main each, with no sides, not big portions, so you would need to order extra if you had big appetite."

  • "Amazing food, brilliant and fast service. Enjoyed a lot dinner with my boyfriend after a theatre."

  • "Nice food servers were rushing us but it was quite late and it had been very busy. We used the 50% off voucher with the wine , we thought it was 1 bottle between 2 but we were only given 1 bottle between 4. The price was good with the 50% off I think it would be expensive otherwise as the portions are quite small. The food was very nice though."

  • "Lovely meal on Saturday evening with my family. Been here several times, and it never disappoints. Very busy on this occasion, so service was a little slow. But, we weren't in a hurry, so didn't really matter. Never a problem mid-week. Good value with the 50% deal, and free bottle of wine. However, there were six of us, so I thought two bottles of wine would have been more appropriate. My only real complaint was how the waiter came over to our table as we perused the menu and loudly announced the 50% deal terms & conditions to the whole party. As this was my treat, I didn't feel all my guests needed to know this, and I found it rather embarrassing! Nevertheless, had a great evening, and will definitely go back."

  • "an overall very enjoyable meal in a very pleasant restaurant. food was of good standard and very good portion size when you consider we were dining on one of their deals. Will return, the true test I say."

  • "Why would they take more people than they can handle. If you accept a table for 5 people at 9pm, you should have a table for 5 at 9pm. Even 9.05 is not acceptable. They will take anyone who books regardless of availability. Frankly I wouldn't bother paying that much for what is essentially average food. Please, anyone who wants to go here look for the Delaunay or the Wolseley. They have better food and are roughly the same price. No need to sacrifice service. These two restaurants would never take more people than they can handle. So why bother with average service and good. The lady in charge became aggressive after I questioned the delay of the table. Why would we book the table for 9 if we wanted to be sat at 9.05? Which became 9.15."

  • "My girlfriends and I have been coming here as a group regularly for years. This visit was a real disappointment. The great yet simple menu has now changed - now more Italian than traditional French and average food at best for the price. But more disappointingly, the service was shocking - no waiter or waitress was assigned to us, no napkins and it was a hassle for someone to get them when we pointed this out, no almonds with the olives and almonds but no one had the courtesy to point this out or rectify it, slow service without a smile, and a complete muck up with the bill. When we spoke to the head waiter / guy in charge he just made excuse after excuse. Sorry to say we will be finding a new place for out regular girls nights out."

  • "We were here on one of the restaurant's special offers. A friendly welcome from well trained front of house staff. Table service, although brisk, was professional and efficient - spot on. We ate from the a la carte menu, which offers a good selection. All dishes looked well prepared and presented. We particularly liked the terrine de campagne starter and the duck confit main course. The desserts looked very inviting. I have marked Café des Amis as very good value based on the special offer (check with Opentable or the restaurant's web site for available offers before booking). At menu prices I would have to rate it expensive in spite of the quality and location. With this one reservation I am happy to recommend."

  • "The service was delightful and considerate. The food was excellent too. Always such a delight to be in this restaurant. Even when so busy pre theater the service does not lack. Thank you."

  • "We have been numerous times to this restaurant and even though sometimes the food isn't as good as others (maybe it's what we order) this time was probably the best. Everything was good especially my starter of Tuna Tartar. My steak was delicious, my friends Tuna main was cooked to perfection and even the cheese platter had 5 types of cheese and we liked them all. See you next time"

  • "The food was great, calves liver cooked as requested and to perfection at last . Shame they had run out of the pate and cornichons at 6.0 pm. Service was goog in a challengingly full restaurant."

  • "We took advantage of the special 50% reduction plus house table wine. This wine was a not unpleasant 2013 montepulciano . My wife had the risotto starter and I had the ravioli both perfectly acceptable - although we were both surprised with the alacrity of the dishes being received which dig beg the question whether they were freshly cooked to order? We both had the seared tuna which was very nicely presented and blue as requested. The price for the above including 12.5% service being applied on the full price and then the half prlce reduction on the food being taken off meant a bill of £ 35.21 including the wine - so quite good value. If the offer still applies in future a good resource near to theatre land."

  • "Prompt efficient service for a quick lunch date. Reasonable choice on the open table lunch menu and good value. I had the seafood linguini which was tasty but quite oily. My dining partner had the Toulouse sausages which were tasty. Time was important for us and the courses arrived promptly. Only downside was a 15 minute wait for coffee after asking twice where it was before we had to cancel the order to leave. Overall the meal was very good as was location"

  • "We have been there before and the food was ok. Last time we were on a special deal and the food was terrible. Calamari were frozen and really bad. There is no point in doing special deals and deliver bad food because it is not an incentive for people to come back."

  • "The food was okay. We got 50% off and a free bottle of wine so value was outstanding. The service was also good."

  • "We have eaten here on previous occasions and the food has been particularly good. However on this special occasion, we were a party of five, and the whole experience left a lot to be desired. First the glasses of champagne were tepid, as was the house wine. The portion size for all the starters were miserable for a cost of between £8 and £10 each. For the mains, I had pan fried sea bass, which had never seen a crispy skin, and my husband had chicken in mushroom sauce with pappardelle and the chicken breast couldn't have been any smaller. The portion sizes of all the main course were also small. At a push this was ok value for the 50% discount offer, but absolutely not worth paying full price. It will be a long time before we return."

  • "Food was very good and was excellent value for money. Service was poor. We were not greeted very promptly on arrival. We waited for ages before anyone served us once seated. Ordered a side dish which didn't arrive and had to ask for arrived when we had finished main course and wrong side dish was brought. Too late as dinner eaten and was sent back. still added to bill but was removed when pointed out. Staff were very helpful and pleasant when they did serve you. Sorry guys could do better."

  • "This is my second visit to Cafe Des Amis and I would thoroughly recommend. The staff are welcoming and professional, the food came quickly and was lovely. Nicely presented and to a high standard. Despite the restaurant being VERY busy, on one of the hottest days of the year and with the woman at the next table complaining about everything, our meal was flawless and the staff impeccable."

  • "After the THIRD bill was presented (full amount then 50% discount allowed & then finally 50% and complimentary wine). Even after the Opentable 50% off & free bottle of wine this meal cost £40 / head (Savoy cheaper) sat next to kitchen door, bins & smokers' alley. Service (charged at 12.5% on full cost of the meal appeared resentful & unco-ordinated (2 of 4 then wait for other 2) served by 6 waiters/resses throughout the evening. Arrived 10 mins early to be told there was a 10 to 15 minute wait but as we went to the bar the next 2 & 4 went straight in to their allotted tables. Then offered where we sat or another 40 minute wait. At least two pairs of tables for 2 which could be pushed together available downstairs for the next 30 mins."

  • "Booked table online for an early Saturday evening on basis of an offer (50% off), poor service experience seemed to be shared with other customers: excessive waiting time between course, staff in a manic /desparate mood, complaining of being understaffed, curt almost off-hand communications. Food was good so the problem was definitely front of house. Perhaps Café des Amis is putting too many on-line offers out and not staffing for the demand?"

  • "We were a party of 6 dining before going to the theatre. We sat down at about 5.30pm and the waiter was taking our orders for drinks and food within around 10 minutes. The set menu of two courses and a bottle of wine between two people at £29 per couple is great value. Service was speedy and friendly and the food was excellent. We would fully recommend this restaurant to anyone who is thinking of eating before going to the theatre. When we left at about 7pm for the theatre, people were queuing outside to get into the restaurant."

  • "Food was mediocre. Ambience extremely noisy. Paper napkins got burnt in a couple of tables around."
    dined on 18/07/2014
  • "The food was good, but not exceptional. Our starter came 3 minutes after we ordered it, bit too quickly in my opinion. Plates were picked up right when my friend took her final bite, and then less than 10 minutes later the main course was there already. Thought that was a bit bad customer service, as it felt like they wnated us to be away as quick as possible."
    dined on 18/07/2014
  • "The menu could be regarded as a bit limited but what they do serve is cooked & presented nicely. Good value for money but they don't include a vegetable or potato dish in the price of the mains which is annoying. Watch out for the automatically added 12.5% service charge. Tell the waiting staff not to add it before your bill's printed to save arguing afterwards."

  • "A fantastic way to spend a lazy lunch in Covent Garden. Food was amazing, staff were brilliant. They were happy for us to take our time and enjoy the experience. Definitely my favourite restaurant and will be recommending to everyone I meet.... Thank you"

  • "Years since I'd last been, Cafe des Amis has had a makeover but the menu and buzz are still just as evident. We booked at 15 minutes' notice through the Open Table app and got a 50% deal on two a la carte courses and a free bottle of house wine. We paid a very modest premium to have steak and paid the difference to choose a better wine - which was very good value. Service was polite and pleasant though staff were clearly rushed off their feet. The only downside was that our table was next to the service area so a frantic 'ding ding ding' emanated most of the evening and waiting staff shot past every minute or so. But the food was good, our steaks cooked exactly as requested. We'll definitely return."

  • "We booked a table for four on OpenTable for Café des Amis and were attracted by the 50% off deal with a free bottle of wine. However, we found the service to be awful - our waitress really struggled to speak any English as she was Polish and the service was pretty much non-existent. My friend's French Onion Soup starter was served cold and it took ages to be re-heated. The Entrecote steak that I ordered (for which I had to pay extra) was really tough and I could hardly eat it! Trying to get the bill was just a nightmare as the place was so busy. The whole place lacked ambience and the staff seemed very jaded. The free bottle of wine was awful and was just plonked on the table."

  • "The Hanover Place location is a narrow pedestrian alley between Floral St and Long Acre on the NE side of Covent Garden. It is excellently placed for the Opera House, and Covent Garden generally, but check the map before setting off or you may find it hard to find. An advantage is that Café des Amis has to try a bit harder. On my visit, mid-week 1230 lunch time, that meant 50% off A La Carte starters and mains (not desserts) and a free bottle of house red or white wine. There was a £2 or £3 supplement for some meat courses. Full price would be expensive, but the offer made the meal good value. I would recommend sitting inside on the ground floor as outside tables looked a bit cramped. Fair choice of Mediterranean French/Italian food."

  • "We went for the 50% off deal plus a free bottle of house wine. Although the wine wasn’t amazing, the value for money was second to none. That plus the food came out in record timing, so it’s perfect for a quick pre-post theatre eat. It’s tucked away off the main road, so it’s lovely and quiet, but not dull, good for conversation. Would recommend."

  • "Food was not bad, service was friendly and fast, but without the free wine and half price offer it would have been too expensive for ambience and food quality...."

  • "The restaurant was full on a Wednesday night and everyone around us had their booking with the OpenTable offer. I had fried calamari for starter that was really salty, my partner's confit duck was OK. I had the steak for main and asked it to be medium, but it came out very well done. The fries on the sides were really salty again. My partner had the tuna steak and it was a small portion. We had to wait a lot for the mains, because our order didn't go through and they forgot about it. The house red that they have in the offer was really bad, like drinking vinegar, so we sent it back and asked for the house white which was better."

  • "We indulged in the 50% off plus a bottle of wine , this was good value , would not have wanted to pay full price!"

  • "We dined pre theatre on the fantastic deal of 50% off starter and mains plus a free bottle of house wine otherwise I would have said it was very expensive. The restaurant staff and ambiance is great - it was already really busy at 6pm with couples and groups. Staff are really attentive and the food and house wine was excellent. Would not hesitate to recommend or to go again."
