We live very close to Chapter One, so use when we fancy something a little special. Food is always very good but the service is the thing that usually stands out. Sorry to say that wasn't the case this saturday. Guess everyone's aloud a bad night. Let hope it improves next time.

This was my fourth visit to chapter one for my husbands birthday and I have to say I was not impressed. Foodwise it seems to have deteriorated drastically and I don't think it was better than a moterway bistro. Having looked to forward to the foie gras this was pure, butter and v little foie gras, which left v uncomfortable taste on palate and desert was v mixed up. Even the main was very pubby. Having dined out the following night at a bistro and paid half of the £160 at chapter 1 I would say chapter one is no longer worth it. The staff where also very different and unhelpful and extremely slow and nonchalant.

I went with my husband for our anniversary, and we were impressed with the setting and the quality of the service. Our waiter was very good, friendly and knowledgeable. I asked more information about my wine and he promptly answered. He knew exactly what wine I had ordered half an hour before. I guess it's to be expected for a restaurant of that quality but still good to know. The food was good, but the desserts were way too salty. I ended up not having a great memory of the food overall because of the dessert experience.

Second time at this superlative restaurant. Our first time was a romantic, couple evening, and we loved the food, the ambiance, etc. This time was a family birthday for Sunday lunch. It was just as good as our first visit. We're starting to really fall in love with this restaurant - inventive, beautifully cooked food (who knew shepherds pie could be so interesting??); excellent service, and a surprisingly affordable bill. We'll definitely be back again.

Have been going to C1 for many years. The food is always very, very good and excellent value. However, they could really do with more frequent changes on their fixed price menus and Sunday lunches. It is forever Chicken Pithivier & Belly of Pork! Whatof lamb or veal? The fixed times for Sunday lunch is a real drag. I understand the desire for two sittings but surely a few tables could be booked between 12:45 & 14:00!!

I love Chapter One, it is my favourite restaurant however on this occasion I have one complaint, I took 5 guests with me and as one was blind dropped them outside while I parked the car they went in and were asked if they would like a Bellini of course they all said yes thinking it was a welcome drink, when I got the bill I discovered these had cost me a few pence short of £48. Think this is a cheap trick not worthy of a Michelin star restaurant. I would happily have brought aperitives but don't like to feel tricked next they'll be putting water on the tables and adding them to the bill if you open them.

We enjoyed the food, but gap between starters and main were far too short, had hardly finished eating starters before mains arrived. The dessert menu was given to us seconds after our main plates had been taken away. No stock of red 1/2 bottle of wine, so brought out a different (more expensive) version and assumed we'd be ok with that - we weren't purely for the fact they had presumed. The 'specials' were briefly explained to us but with lots of detail and prices (supplements) which seemed to devalue the restaurant a bit. didn't feel valued as customers, table was at 9pm. The food we had was michelin starred, but the actual occasion lacked something special. would go again, but not in a massive hurry. (ironically!)

As our anniversary was mid week we decided to celebrate locally. I have always had reservations not about the food but the service but as we were going in the evening I hoped it might have improved. Sadly not. Indifferent service, un-coordinated . The food is still delicious. It did seem stark to serve a steak without a garnish We were not asked mid course whether all was in order; a member of staff stood chatting to one table for a good 20 minutes but as she did not appear to be serving in the restaurant it would not have made a difference to the service. Compare the service to Racine the previous week without a Michelin star and you do wonder .It should be an overall experience

We've eaten at Chapter One a few times and are always impressed with the beautiful food. All staff are helpful, attentive and friendly and the restaurant itself is elegant and intimate. We ate from the lunch menu and enjoyed every course from a delicious mushroom risotto to a sea bream with potato gnocchi and a shallot tarte tatin. It's a wonderful place for a special meal although the reasonable prices mean you could come in any day just because.

This restaurant is around 30-35 mins drive from my home town of Tunbridge Wells, but the drive is always worth it. Superb, non-intrusive yet extremely attentive service, a lovely atmosphere (always busy when I've been) plus absolutely superb dishes packed with flavour and stunningly presented. Three Michelin starred courses plus a decent bottle of wine for around £60/head (well, on a Sunday anyway, few £ more usually) is I think great value. Remains my favourite 'no so local' destination for a special occasion.

We went to Chapter 1 on a Monday night for our anniversary. It was almost full, which was impressive for a Monday. The food didn't disappoint. We had the 5 course tasting menu with 5 paired wines for £75. They were very accommodating with my partners but allergy and swapped both out desserts. We had pea soup which tasted amazing and I'm not even a fan of peas. Then it was salmon, a mixed tomato salad, which was bursting with flavour, followed by the main lamb course. We had a raspberry sorbet before the best chocolate fondant I've ever had. We were well looked after by our waitress who also bought us a glass of both a paired wine for the fondant and the original dessert wine we had missed. Can't recommend Chapter 1 highly enough

We were very disappointed to be presented on our Sunday lunch August 31 with the same menu (except one different main) we had at our Sunday lunch early July-- boring ! Although we were happy with the food on our July visit, this time it reminded us on gastro pub food. Our fish dishes, salmon and skat wing, were overcooked. The creme brulee was too sweet and too soft . In general the food looked like thrown on the plates.

Have eaten at Chapter One many times and always find it very very good, this time no exception. Ate at peak time on a Saturday evening in a very busy restaurant but they still provided the high standard of food and service that we love this restaurant for. Between us we had Fois Gras ballotine, Roasted Pigeon salad, Belly of Pork, Fish of the day and Peanut/banana/chocolate dessert and we ate the lot. All absolutely wonderful. A point to note is that their fantastic tasting menu is not available on a Saturday. I can totally understand why as the restaurant is so busy but perhaps this should be made clear when booking. Thank you Chapter One, outstanding again.

Chapter One is a top class restaurant - yet nowhere near as expensive as some restaurants of a similar standing that I am familiar with - so, as far as I am concerned, it makes the perfect venue for any special occasion or family gathering. Their inventive and very reasonably-priced lunch menu also ensures that it is affordable for more informal gatherings as well and I am very happy that it is located not too far from my home.
