  • Private Party Facilities: The fully air conditioned private room is situated on the first floor and is ideal for a variety of functions, from a wedding reception or dinner party to a business meeting or presentation.
    Our menus have been designed by executive head chef Andrew McLeish to suit almost any occasion. We have a range of starters, main courses and desserts from which the organizer chooses 3 of each for all guests to pre-choose from. You can enjoy a three course meal for as little as £24.95 (depending on dishes selected).
    There is no room hire for parties of 20 or more who are having a full menu.
    The room has its own cloakroom and private bar.

Getting there

  • Public Transit: Nearest BR station is Orpington. There is a black taxi rank at the station and the easiest thing is to get a taxi. It is approximately 2 miles from Orpington station to Chapter One. Trains to Orpington are from Charing Cross or Victoria.
    Alternatively train to Bromley South and then taxi but this is further away (approximately 4 miles)

Chapter One is a Modern European restaurant situated just outside Orpington in Kent. It is firmly established as one of the country’s top restaurants and is the proud holder of one Michelin star and four AA rosettes.Executive head chef, Andrew McLeish and his team have created an impressive modern European menu, focusing on fantastic seasonal ingredients and an extensive wine list perfectly complements Andrew's refined cooking.
At Chapter One, we believe that offering value for money is just as important as award-winning food. Three courses at dinner is £35.50, for lunch is £23.95 and we also offer a less formal brasserie menu available Monday – Saturday lunchtimes. On a Sunday evening you can enjoy the a la carte menu for just £29.95 – the perfect way to round off your weekend.

  • "Prior to a Sunday Evening visit lunched here 6 weeks ago and left very impressed with everything and indeed felt things improved on previous visits. Issue is food quantity as quality is never in doubt. Unfortunately we reverted to minuscule portions for our mains and in particular my lamb rump (which think carried an extra £4 charge making meal £38) would say contained no more than 3 oz of meat and little else. If we had not ordered additional green beans frankly would have to have had another main to feel anywhere near satisfied. My wife finished off with a fab cheeseboard that thankfully offset her inadequate main. Starters and main courses were fine as usual but it all left us thinking would only do lunch in future unless on a diet!"

  • "We decided to try the Tasting Menu (with wines) to celebrate a significant birthday for one of our party, so were looking forward to a real 'Michelin One Star' treat. The menus were slightly tatty and appeared overused. Several dishes were disappointing. Some wine glasses had not been polished and some appeared 'milky'. The waiting staff (who are normally attentive and helpful), seemed to be struggling and there was no consistency to the service, culminating in one course being served to two of our party whilst leaving the other members of the party without food for several minutes. All in all not an experience worthy of a Michelin star and very surprising given previous positive experiences at this restaurant."

  • "The restaurant is very well appointed and elegant and whilst more formal attire for diners would not be out of place but most of those present, including ourselves, were dressed in 'smart casual' style. The ambience was most pleasant and the acoustics were such that normal volume of conversation did not intrude between tables. The waiters were friendly and engaging and took great care to ensure we were happy and ours engaged us in humorous exchanges each time he visited the table, which was fun. The menu offered a wide range of gourmet choices which were prepared and presented stylishly. In summary we had a memorable evening, of good food, good company in delightful surroundings and left for the short walk home replete and happy."

  • "There was 4 of us and we all had taster menu - which actually turned out quite basic food!! We arrived at 7.00 and finished our meal at 9.30. First 2 courses came out quickly and flowed nicely, but then found we were waiting for a long time in between the last courses, especially the main dinner (pork belly) and the first sweet - which were just frozen blackberries and ice cream!!! Service was excellent though, without our waitress the evening wouldnt have geen so good"

  • "Have dined on a number of occasions over the years at Chapter one but this was our first time for a while. Having booked on a Monday was a bit concerned that there might be no atmosphere but the restaurant had quite a few full tables and there was a nice ambience. Everything from the delicious nibbles with pre dinner drinks to the petit fours with coffee was delicious and of an extremely high standard. We even ordered spinach as a side dish without realising it wasn't on the menu but they still managed to serve it."

  • "This was the first time we had dined at Chapter One. The food and choice of wine was excellent. Presentation was of the high standard expected in an establishment of this quality. However, the service was rather hit and miss. Staff seemed more interested in looking at other tables rather than concentrating on the one they were serving. It seemed there weren't enough staff who had had the requisite amount of in-depth training. This was a pity as it detracted from what was overall a lovely experience. Hopefully this will have improved for our return."

  • "Chapter One was a but of a let down although the decor, ambience and service were great the main meals let them down. We ordered 1 belly pork and a guinea fowl both were slightly undercooked. The pork was a slab of fat they didn't bother to crisp or brown it enough so it was literally just that white fat. The same with the breast of the Guinea fowl it just wasn't cooked enough and when I turned it over there was still blood on the meat. Our starters were amazing mushroom risotto and a salmon beautiful tastes and our desserts were lovely baked cheesecake and chocolate pudding which was a little rich but still great taste. We're not rushing to go back it was over priced for what we ate, shame because it was a lovely looking restaurant."

  • "We've been going to Chapter One for years. It maintains its high standards in food and service and remains the only high-end restaurant (that I know of) in this part of the world. We would go there more often were it not for one thing: the menu seems to be fixed in aspic! We've eaten our way round it at least twice and now that lack of innovation puts us off, so we tend to go only twice a year. Please change the menu!"

  • "We have been to Chapter One 3 or 4 times now for various special events like anniversaries and birthdays. The food and service are always excellent and the ambience is warm and inviting. There is always something we particularly want to eat whether it is a tried and trusted dish or a new venture and although I am quite picky about my food I always clear my plate at every course. Wine list excellent too, though a little pricey. However, about what you would expect to pay for a Michelin star restaurant. We thought the cost of our 3-course meal with cocktails reasonably good value for a restaurant of this calibre. And the staff are always very solicitous, even adding more sugar to my mojito at my request!"

  • "Six of us came here on Sunday for lunch to celelbrate my parents taking retirement. We'd all eaten here before and this occassion was equally as good. Service was friendly and professional, the food was brought out on time and we were not rushed or left waiting at any time. I was able to use my 'Friends' card which got us all a lovely glass of champagne each. We had my 4 year old nephew with us and they were happy to adapt the menu to bring him something suitable. As ever the deserts were just devine!!"

I appreciate that most restaurants now have two sittings, but we were allocated 2.5 hours. As soon as one course was finished the next arrived. We felt as if we didn't have time to breathe. I am all in favour of good service but this was ridiculous. It made me feel so unconfortable that I was ill on the way home! What a waste!! Good food needs to be savoured."

However, although the restaurant was not especially busy for a Saturday lunchtime, the service when we were first seated was well below the standard normally delivered - unusually long wait for meus etc and then we waited 20 mins for part of our drinks order to be served and no apology when it finally arrived. Once the food was ordered, however, things picked up and service was back to the usual high standard."

  • "chapter one never dis-appoints. you are always made to feel welcome and well looked after. the menu is not large but there are some interesting choices and there are always one or two specials. the wine list is good and there is a nice choice or wine and champagne by the glass. tordor looked after us really well and was able to arrange for one of the dishes to be tweaked for me. always a bonus when the chef doesn't mind the odd foible of a customer. the new butter bread was to die for!!! there is a nice amount of room between tables which always adds to the comfort. my favourite local restaurant."
