Diner Reviews
  • "This is my first visit here and love hidden gems such as Charcoals. Quite a small restaurant, nothing fancy but the aroma in the air was making me hungry. We had the 2-course set lunch and what a treat! I had the chickpea starter followed by the garlic, chilli chicken. My friend had chicken pakora then the butter chicken. We went for the fried rice. All the dishes were very fresh and full of flavour; the chicken pieces were lovely and tender. Portion sizes were also perfect for lunch. I will be back for sure. A fabulous little find in the heart of Glasgow."

  • "Yet again, Mr Ali remembered us and dropped some freebies at our table every time he went past. The food was superb as always. The curry sauce in particular is absolutely the best in the city. Service and food outstanding as always."

  • "Booked Charcoals for a meal after Commonwealth Games Saturday. Needed a place near Central Station and saw great reviews for Charcoals. First visit but will not be the last, great food, good value in a busy but friendly atmosphere."

  • "I visited here on Saturday with my sister, brother in law and niece. Not a massive fan of Indian food but this was fantastic. So tasty. I had the veg pakora for starter (spicy), chicken boona for main with nan bread - delish!! Not bad for under £7! I had mentioned that it was my sisters birthday and they had put a "happy birthday" sign up, made fresh popadoms for her and brought her a candle lit ice cream and sang happy birthday to her. Can't thank Ali and his staff enough for making it sooo special. I will be back soon (as will the rest of the brood!)."

  • "Simply great food, great staff and well worth every penny. It is small from the outside but big on everything else. Thanks for another great meal"

  • "Met some friends and their children in Glasgow and decided that it was a curry that we wanted. They took the booking for 8 and we had the lunchtime fixed price menu, two courses for £6.95. They catered for the vegetarians and delivered both courses promptly. Everybody stated that the food was delicious and your could tell that it was freshly cooked for the order. Service was very good, we asked about swapping out one of the starters for a vegetable samosa but they said that they could not do that - till. However, they presented us with the samosa in addition at no extra cost. They also gave two of the children not having a dessert a chocolate bar at the end. Small touches but will get you coming back. If in Glasgow, go!"

  • "Recommended this restauraunt by a relative who had eaten there the week before for the first time. Excellent food, great choice, quality and value for money. Service was good but we had to wait a little while between starters and mains but the waiters were very polite and apologetic for the delay. Would definitely return if in Glasgow again. Thanks for an enjoyable meal in a lovely atmosphere!"

  • "Been here a few times now and again the food, , service and value for money is outstanding. Made to feel welcome and very well looked after by all the staff. Geniouly I have yet to find a fault with this restaurant. For me its the best in Glasgow for the cuisine that's on offer. Will be back again thats for sure."

  • "My brother - in - law and his wife were up for the weekend and the only choice for Saturday night was Charcoals. A great welcome from Ali and his staff and a nice table in the middle of the restaurant. My sister in law asked for haggis pakora - not on the menu, and Ali said they no longer did it. He was kidding. We shared an excellent haggis pakora, as well as chicken and vegetable. Main courses likewise excellent, and a complimentary drink and the end. Without doubt we will return. Thanks again for a great meal Ali, and thanks for looking after us so well!"

  • "A fantastic no nonsense curry house, with great service and lovely food, the decor is more akin to a Cafe but dont let that put you off."

  • "After scrolling through the google search results for 'top Indian restaurants in Glasgow', we were having no luck. However, following recommendation from a relative, we tried Charcoals. It was fantastic. Pure and simple. It is not huge. But with that comes a familiarity with the staff not available in some of the larger chains. The staff were friendly and offered outstanding service. The food was impeccable. One of the best curry's we have ever had. We honestly cannot fault charcoals and would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend. Next time we visit Glasgow we will certainly be paying a return visit!"

  • "Another good experience here. The previous time we ate here it was disappointing, but the other 6 occasions have been great, with good quality food and a few extras thrown in. Can be a bit noisy, and have struggled to read the menu at the back of the restaurant ( quite amusing when two tables next to each other had to use the torches on phones to read the menu!) . Very nice staff, very nice food. Surprised that the Service Charge seems to go on as standard now- I don't know if this is a weekend only thing, or if it always goes on the bill. Always our Indian Restaurant of choice in Glasgow."

  • "We're regulars at Charcoals, and have been known to make the trip from Edinburgh to Glasgow specifically for the purposes of visiting the restaurant. My wife is coeliac, and the team go out of their way to ensure that as much as possible of their food is gluten-free. The meals are always fresh and hot, with great flavour and some interesting twists. It's not fancy, so don't go expecting nouvelle cuisine and ostentatious surroundings. However, if you love good Indian food, and want great service from really friendly staff, then this is the place to go. It's also very popular, so booking is highly recommended at peak times."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the food - we ordered the pre-theatre menu which was great value, and the service was first class - the waiters were attentive, and we received a complimentary spices poppadum with chick pea dip as well as the poppadums we ordered. The food was served very quickly and was delicious. I would definitely return to Charcoal and would have no hesitation in recommending to a friend."

  • "We turned up quite late because we had just flown in from Bristol. There was a stag party there who were very loud (and next to us), and the staff kept apologising even though it wasn't their fault. The food itself was wonderful, as was the service, and there were few surprises along the way - they brought us two extra appetisers at the outset and a vodka jelly each at the end, on the house. They didn't have to do this and it was lovely of them. We were rather full at the end as a result, but that's obviously not a complaint. Recommended on all fronts."

  • "To put it simple this is the best of the best. The food was outstanding as was the service.I would recommend the tandoori mixed grill, it takes a bit of eating but it is the best I have had by far, very tender chicken and the chops too. The fish pakora is first class, pure white and very fresh. The service was excellent and very friendly Would recommend this restaurant 100%"

We received a complimentary starter and a vodka jelly drink too. It was my partner's birthday meal and we both really enjoyed the overall experience. Cant wait to go back."

  • "From the moment we arrived Ali the manager made us feel very welcome, in fact all the staff we lovely. Our table was ready there was no waiting. The quality of the food was excellent and we liked the little complementary tasters that we were brought...these were really tasty. The food we ordered was cooked fresh and the curries can be ordered to the strength of spice you like. The portions of food were spot on ....not too much and not to little. We paid just under £50 for the 2 of us for 2 courses and a couple of drinks each so felt it was good value for money. I would definitely recommend and we will be going again if we are back in Glasgow. Well done Ali and the team."

Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, the staff at Charcoals are eager to please, and will do whatever they can to ensure that you have a great time. The place is unprepossessing, but don't let that put you off. The welcome is what draws you in, and the food is what guarantees you'll stay."
