A word from Chez Bruce
Bruce Poole and Nigel Platts-Martin opened Chez Bruce in 1995. From the outset, it was their intention to serve the very best food and drink but within a relaxed, informal yet thoroughly professionally orchestrated environment.
At Chez Bruce we are not particularly into gadgets and tricks in the kitchen. Home-made charcuterie, slow cooked braises, offal, warm and cold salads, classical desserts and bread-making could be listed as specialities. We also take the cheese board very seriously indeed and it forms an integral part of the restaurant's day-to-day life.
The Directors of the restaurant are fanatical wine-lovers and are very proud of the restaurant's wine list which truly is one of the very best in the UK.

Diner Reviews
  • "We arrived quite late and staff were understanding - altough we did have to make a quick decision before the kitchen closed for mains at 3! Food was fantastic and service brilliant - particularly for our companion who was waiting for us - they brought her a newspaper to keep her entertained whilst she waited. They also overheard it was a birthday and put a candle in the cake without us requesting this. Would highly recommend for food and service - also for a restaurant of this quality in London the price was really rather reasonable."

  • "Overall a very pleasant and enjoyable evening in celebration of a birthday. There were 2 vegetarians in the group and while we understood the options to be limited before we attended the vegetarian main was a little underwhelming. The gnocchi lacked texture and was very rich without being particularly flavoursome. The meat eaters amongst the group however were very happy with clean plates all round. To be fair to the excellent waiting staff who helped to make the evening an enjoyable one the vegetarian mains were both refunded from the total bill voluntarily. The restaurant is small and cosy leading to a great atmosphere but one small complaint id the lack of air conditioning which on a hot summers evening led to slight discomfort."

  • "Lovely dinner on a Saturday night. We went as a group of 6 with one of the group being coeliac and they had prepared the menu in advance and when they brought out the bread, had separate plates of gluten-free alternatives without us having to ask. The menu choices all looked amazing and we found it incredibly difficult to chose between them! The service was excellent and overall we had a very enjoyable experience. This was not my first time at Chez Bruce and it is always the best choice for a special night out in Wandsworth."

  • "Love this restaurant, never fails to impress. The red mullet with sauce vierge, courgette flower fritter and tapenade was particularly wonderful."

  • "I last ate at CB 10 years ago. It is remarkably unchanged but little things are not quite as good as they were. Food delicious but not quite a French as it used to be - no pigs trotter anymore! Service not as good - younger staff who are not quite as quick or French. One waiter leaned right across me to remove my empty wine glass instead of approaching from my right! Complete no no in my book. Young waiter who brought the cheese forgot the name of one. One improvement was the sommelier was happy just to take my order for Muscadet without any remonstrations! Overall an enjoyable lunch but not quiet the grand experience it used to be."

  • "I wasn't blown away by the food but then I probably made a poor choice of main, the tongue and kidney ended up being too much of a feature for my liking. The starter was lovely - I had fish cakes and quite unusually for me I was tempted by a number of the dessert options. Overall the food was ok but not spectacular given the price and the setting felt a bit more cafe than restaurant."

  • "This was our first visit to Chez Bruce. Several people had recommended it and we had been looking forward to our meal. Everything is white and I sat looking at a dull white wall upon which hung a large picture, possibly of a dishcloth!. I was not able to see the rest of the restaurant at all. The food was good; for me, my starter was a bit disappointing, my main was very good and my dessert was amazing, as was my husband's. Congratulations to the pastry chef. The main problem was the slow service. I understand that one has to wait if food is cooked to order, but we must have waited half an hour for our mains. A member of staff did come to our table to apologise, however, and the service charge was removed from the bill."

  • "It's good to see that the food is still fantastic, the service good and the sommelier helpful. The other area in which Chez Bruce used to stand out was the friendliness of the outstanding front of house staff. Unfortunately this is no longer the case and the current Restaurant Manager appears to set an example, making no effort to speak to customers."

  • "The menu choice was fantastic, even for a fairy free person. We were impressed with all the dishes. The service was great! We will be going back."

  • "3 of us went for a Friday lunch for a birthday. Excellent value and although it is a 'set menu', there is so much choice that it does not feel like one. Good service, very attentive, excellent dishes"
    dined on 11/07/2014
  • "Very attentative friendly staff, a good variety of options on the set menu which was good value. Food was delicious and the little extra touches - Parmesan crisps, chocolate truffles, shortbread - meant we left feeling wonderfully replete. Can't wait to go back!"

  • " After being seated we were offered bread and water, but were not offered other drinks for 15 minutes. For starters we had Asian fish cake salad which was average, and a very bland and dry boiled chicken dish. For main course we had pork belly which was nice, but no better than your average restaurant, and a cod dish which lacked any excitement. For desert we payed the £5 supplement for the cheese board which was the best part of the meal, however it was a challenge to understand the waitress. Overall it came to £165 including wine, and it was definitely not worth it, we will not be returning any time soon. I assume that we must have 'chosen badly' but that should not be possible in a Michelin star restaurant at that price!"

  • "Having eaten at Chez Bruce on numerous occasions I have always enjoyed my meal but generally find the staff pretentious - and sometimes wrong in what they tell the clients. We asked about the origins do a particular cheese and found that what the member of staff told us differed from what Google told us. He could have told us that that he thought the cheese was from a particular place and then, when proved wrong, would have seemed less pompous ... A bit of staff training would help."

  • "I had previously been invited as a guest to a private celebration party held at Chez Bruce some three years ago at which time I was impressed both by the quality of food and the care and attention of the staff. Unfortunately as I live in Yorkshire the opportunity to eat at this restaurant only arose this month when my wife and I were at Wimbledon for the Tennis finals. Often when one visits a restaurant some years later the standard of food and service is disappointing and not as one remembered. This is certainly not the case at Chez Bruce. The quality and choice of food and wine was superb and the attention of the staff could not be faulted. I will certainly be eating there again when I am next in the vicinity"

  • "Very nice food and friendly, but not overly formal service, the setting is also nice with views over the common. Perfect for a romantic dinner or an occasional treat. Quite pricey at about £75/head including a wine and service, but justifiable every now and then! Early bookings are subject to a return time of 2 hours but that's enough for an unhurried 3-course dinner."

  • "Quality is as high as ever. The best restaurant in the area. Goof variety in the menu."

  • "We had been recommended this restaurant as one that delivered top quality food at sensible if not modest prices. It lived up to its reputation. To quibble, there was nothing outstanding (the cheeseboard comes close) but everything was at least 8/10; the service was very good and the pork belly main stood out as memorable. The wine list offered a strong selection and the sommelier was knowledgable. if you wanted to experince modern french cooking done well in a restaurant that understands good service this would be a good choice."

  • "Fine dining with good value lunchtime menu .Wide choice of each course - all beautifully cooked & presented .Extensive wine list but entry prices fairly steep by the bottle- but plenty by the glass.Excellent & not over fussy service very attentive to dietary needs. Would definitely return for set lunch again & evenings for special occasions"

  • "We went for our ten year wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. The service was impeccable and the food very good. The only down side to the food was that it was very rich at times, lots of butter and salt! As other reviewers have pointed out, you are very close to the table next door. We were impressed that we were given some chocolates to take away, as it was a special occasion."
    dined on 26/06/2014
  • "My friends and I went to Chez Bruce for a belated 'christmas' lunch which for various reasons we had not been able to arrange until now. I have now been to Chez Bruce 7-8 times over the last few years. Each time I am impressed by the excellent food and service. I hope to be back there sometime soon."
    dined on 26/06/2014
  • "The 3 course lunch is always such good value. So many options it was hard to choose. Great service as well. The only down side was a family group sitting near with badly behaved children. The parents weren't much better as their phones kept ringing! Fortunately our waiter moved us to a quieter table."
    dined on 26/06/2014
  • "The ambience and service was excellent, as ever. The starter and deserts were very good with a good choice. However we found the choice for the main course limited and settled for steak , with a £6 supplement, because we didn't want the alternatives, I would not choose this normally as I would have wanted something more interesting. The wine list seems overpriced although extensive"

  • "Wonderful atmosphere, stunning lunch for excellent value (then splashed out on the incredible wine list) and waited upon superbly!"

  • "year after year, meal after meal, this is no less than the best restaurant in London--and we eat two restaurant meal a day when in town. we are in the restaurant business and are not shy about what we like and don't like: chez Bruce we like in every way possible, even the journey to get there. Our highest recommendation!"

  • "If you want to see how far London dining has come in the last 10 years, go to Chez Bruce... 10 years ago it was one of the most exciting new restaurants, but while the rest of London has moved on, Chez Bruce has hardly changed. The menu is like the decor - fine, safe, but could do with an update. Beef, pork, lamb, cod, plaice, turbot, fois gras, fish cakes. All safe. All fine. There's even creme brûlée for dessert. When was the last time you had that? And mango ice cream. Remember when we used to think mango was exotic? Nice, safe, fine. At £45 per head, it's ok value for money. The service was professional, but slow... 2.5 hours, start to finish. At the end, one of the many waiters asked "how was the meal?". "Fine" we said. Just fine."

  • "We have been eyeing up Chez Bruce's cheese board through the window for a while now and we finally took the plunge and booked for a boozy lunch, we were not disappointed in any course, all the food was amazing, the wine was amazing and the selection to dessert wines are plentiful. highly recommend. At £35 for three courses, it is a gem of a deal!"
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Chez Bruce certainly delivers consistent quality for a reasonable price. Its 3-course lunch meal was, on this occasion, of the standard I expect. The starters were innovative and delicious, the mains hearty and comforting, and the desserts inspiring. As it's just around the corner from me, I'll be back."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "tasty but tiny starters + average main courses, but larger portion of supermarket quality dessert, no amuse bouche, instead parmesan biscuits before meal +offered buttery pastry biscuit before leaving.Obviously they are trying to save money by filling diners up on the biscuits/bread. Not very tasty sour dough (trust me Gails is so much better) focacchia or walnut. Red Barolo carafe nice enough but they couldn't do a glass of prosseco or an apple martini. All together v disappointing for the cost £160 for 2. Ccnsidering ambience and good but slightly rushed service (the waiter tried to take away my consome, when I was only half way done+I don't like to be asked immediately after finishing my main for my dessert choice) worth about £60"
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "Well balanced menu and very good wine list by the glass and 1/2 bottle carafe. £45 for 3 courses OK but on the high side. The only real downside was that the tables are quite close together so that the noise level was high."
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "Main course was slightly disappointing compared to the magnificent start and dessert."

  • "I took my parents here for a Father's Day and birthday dinner. I've been to Chez Bruce a couple of times previously but the last time was a while ago. The food was delicious and the service is great. They have a good choice of dishes to choose from on the menu. There is a BYO offer on at the moment where you can bring a bottle of wine on a Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, which is good value at £5 per person per bottle. I would definitely go back."
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "Can't fault the excellent ambience food & service but it comes at a price. If you're on a tight budget this isn't the restaurant for you!"
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "This restaurant has been recommended to me so many times. We had family visiting so decided to treat them to a nice Sunday lunch here. It was fabulous, cannot fault the food. The service I would have expected to be a little better...we did have to ask for things a couple of times...outstanding value...the Sunday lunch menu is just £35 a head for three courses."
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "Wonderful as ever, a fails safe and that is why I always return for good food and service. Chez Bruce 'always' reaches the mark."
    dined on 14/06/2014
  • "We had dinner here for my girlfriends birthday and were well looked after for the occasion, service was well timed and mannered. We both had fish dishes and they were faultlessly cooked and delicious. I left the wine choices to the sommelier to get away from my usual choices and try something new and the did a great job. I would recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit again"

  • "Lovely evening with some stunning food to match. The help we had selecting the wine was explemalory finding us sometime we really liked and matched our mains. Thank you and we will be back x"
