A word from Chez Bruce
Bruce Poole and Nigel Platts-Martin opened Chez Bruce in 1995. From the outset, it was their intention to serve the very best food and drink but within a relaxed, informal yet thoroughly professionally orchestrated environment.
At Chez Bruce we are not particularly into gadgets and tricks in the kitchen. Home-made charcuterie, slow cooked braises, offal, warm and cold salads, classical desserts and bread-making could be listed as specialities. We also take the cheese board very seriously indeed and it forms an integral part of the restaurant's day-to-day life.
The Directors of the restaurant are fanatical wine-lovers and are very proud of the restaurant's wine list which truly is one of the very best in the UK.

The food was excellent but the average service and having to sit upstairs detracted away from it being an overall great experience. If you go to this restaurant, specify you want to sit downstairs...

Great food, great service knowledgeable somellier and cheese waiters. Food classy and well presented but not too "nouvelle". It is a pretty expensive prix-fixe, extensive wine list but not extortionate soft drinks and extras, but the quality is so high its good value. Service attentive but not intrusive, teenage kids (foodies) were waited on professionally and without being patronised. I has left a lasting impression with us and we will be back, highdays and holidays...

As always the food and wine were fantastic as were the staff. It is a shame that they've crammed one too many tables into the main part of the restaurant downstairs - specifically along the rear wall where we were sat. Not wishing to overstate the problem but by simply removing one table for two would do the trick. There really wasn't enough room to get out without sitting in your neighbours dinner. I realise ever cover counts in the restaurant business but it was the only down point in an otherwise wonderful dining experience.

the food is just great and surprisingly modestly priced - a 3 course for £35 or 2 course for around £25 plus all the little nibblies before, after, inbetween. The wine is not cheap, but also lovely, and can be purchased by the glass if you're keeping an eye on finances or intake. not snooty either. would go back in a heartbeat.

I love Chez Bruce, or did. It's one of my local restaurants & a go to for special occasions. Last night it felt like it was no longer that special. Whilst the food is good & the menu has lovely choices it is let down by poor service and atmosphere. The service was unimpressive. Predominately unfriendly and uninterested. Drinks put down with no eye contact, no interest as the staff happily chatted to themselves and they looked very untidy, it was almost as you would expect in an informal local brasserie. The dining room also felt very crowded with tables so close together I managed to accidentally elbow my neighbour. So overall, I would say past it's best. Disappointing.

This was my third time at Chez Bruce and, as at the two previous occasions, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Professional, courteous, approachable staff; great food, made from the best of ingredients and beautifully presented; not directly cheap but fully in line with the quality provided, so good value for money (and I was so full that I skipped breakfast the next morning, so saved a bit of money there ;-).

Ten years, two children and a move out of London our fist thought on what we should do to celebrate was to return to Chez Bruce. The food, wine and service was everything what we remembered, if not more. Don't want to wait another decade before we return.

I wanted somewhere special to present the engagement ring to my Fiancee and also enjoy a celebration meal. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted spendidly and escorted to our table. The table staff made us feel welcome and were attentive. The food was divine, could not fault it!!!. All 3 courses were delicious and well presented (Spiced fishcakes, Griddled scallops, Black face lamb and CremeCaramel with rum soaked raisins and choc cake plus cheesecake desserts). We were able to bring our own wine (for a small corkage charge) and were treated to a free glass of house Champange as a treat plus some other nibbles. The place deserves its Michelin star. Its a shame Bruce and his head chef were out. I would definitely go back.

We has the standard 3 course menu for £47.50 excl service and drinks. The standard was overall very high - the starters were superb, the different elements each being perfectly cooked and complementing each other very well. Main courses (lamb, red mullet) were similarly well-cooked and presented, although perhaps a bit too diverse - perhaps too many different things on the plate with flavours that didn't marry quite as well as the starters? (But this is a minor quibble.) Desserts (baked figs with amaretto parfait, creme caramel with poached pear) were excellent. Good-sized portions - not too small and "nouvelle cuisine". Service was surprisingly quick given that the restaurant was full and the complexity of the dishes. Good value.

The service was attentive and friendly. I appreciated being given the recipe for their Parmesan Biscuits - printed on the back of a copy of the evening's menu. A birthday extra, offered when I had expressed admiration of the biscuits. The food is creative, without being overwhelmed by flavours. In the first course, the salad of black figs with gorgonzola and walnuts worked well and I enjoyed the spiced fishcakes. The roast cod was tasty as a main course. Vegetarians have limited options at Chez Bruce; it's wise to check the menu in advance. Finishing with the quince and almond tart was a real treat.. We like dining early (7-00 booking). That was useful since, as the restaurant filled, it became less easy to hold a conversation.

Tucked away in Wandsworth, chez Bruce is an unpretentious little gem offering top-notch cuisine to the budget-wary foodie. The prix fixe menu embodied a quintessential marriage between modern French and Mediterranean cuisines, with ample choice for all. They accommodated my distaste for garlic well, and the staff were perfectly helpful, even if a tad obsequious. One very minor criticism of the service was that we had about five different servers over the course of our meal (including he whom I assumed to be the sommelier) -- this took away from the 'homely' ambience that the restaurant name implies. I would've also liked to some soothing ambience music, but that's a personal preference. Overall an excellent experience; I plan to return.

For me a good dining experience is above all about the quality and taste of the food. And in the case of Chez Bruce these are outstanding. Unlike some French Michelin-starred restaurants, Chez Bruce does not bother with the amuse-bouches or an extremely servile (and quasi-religious) service. Instead the service is good, attentive but not obsequious. And although I was originally told we would be seated upstairs (which is a little less enjoyable) they promised to try and seat us in the main dining room on the night, and they were as good as their word. We ate lamb, cod and a vegetarian course. All the dishes we tasted were really excellent. Our French guests were mightily impressed!

Over the years my family have eaten at Chez Bruce a number of times and have never been dissapointed. On this occasion it was our wedding anniversary and my wife and I wanted a quiet, romantic lunch. The table in the window alcove I asked for had been reserved, as requested, the welcome was as warm as ever and the service exemplary, lunch was superb, with all the subtlety and lightness that I associate with Chez Bruce. The wine list is extensive and excellent, the sommelier served the wine by the glass and a half bottle (we were driving) with as much charm as if we'd ordered a full bottle of his finest Bordeaux. The cheese board was groaning with a wide range of delicious British and French cheeses. Chez Bruce consistently delivers!

We booked a late table as we were travelling down from Norfolk that evening. At 9.30pm the restaurant had a lovely buzz and everyone was clearly enjoying themselves. The food was interesting and absolutely delicious. We all chose different items from the menu so that we could sample each other's food - everything was beautiful - in particular the scallops were 'melt in the mouth' tender. We all loved the Parmesan biscuits served with our pre-dinner drinks. Staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive, without being intrusive. We had a wonderful evening.

Have been several times, usually for dinner, and have always had a great meal. This was lunch on my husband's birthday and did not disappoint. Food prices for lunch and dinner are very good value for the quality, wines and drinks seem comparatively expensive, although in line with similar restaurants. Little piece of birthday cake complete with candle was a nice touch.
