A word from China Tang
Conceived by Sir David Tang, the founder of China Clubs in Hong Kong, Peking, and Singapore, as well as the life-style brand, "Shanghai Tang", China Tang aims to define the best of classical Cantonese food.

There is no fusion of dishes nor compromise on classical recipes, all are prepared with the freshest ingredients and traditional spices and flavourings. No mono-sodium-glutomate (MSG) shall be used.

The decoration of China Tang will evoke a romantic sense of art deco of the thirties in line with the general architecture of the Dorchester Hotel. At the same time, there will be an abundance of Chinoiserie as well as a collection of art from both.

Diner Reviews
  • "I heard good things about this place but I was very disappointed with my experience. The decor is lovely but I did find the place quiet noisey. We ordered starters and main. The starters came out very quickly and before we had any time to finish both out mains turned up. I asked out waitor to recommend something. He recommended noodles which were dry and not as nice as I would expect from such a high end restaurant. The whole experience felt very rushed and I wouldn't go back again."

  • "Pretty good Chinese. The food was all pretty good - not greasy and flavoursome. The canneloni style dim sum was in particular very good. However I'd probably except slightly better food for the price and location. The service also felt a little rushed. But the ambience is great so overall a pretty good place."

  • "I live between Hong Kong and Uk and when I feel I really need my Chinese food fix, I go to China Tang. The restaurant is beautiful, if you like Art Deco I love the poetry readings in the loo and the food is exceptional. Very authentic and not at all made for a foreigners palate. The experience does not come cheap, and if you really want to go for reasonably priced, excellent dim sum, Royal China in Bayswater is the better option and equally authentic. But this is the whole experience and a wonderful Sunday lunch option. We even drove into London from Surrey for the privilege."

  • "The service was excellent, the ambience suitable, the food (set lunch menu) was tasty and hot. This is a restaurant one should return to. Ken Abel"

  • "This restaurant is in the decline compared to when I used to live in London 5 year ago and eat here frequently. We had reservations but they sat my wide in a ridiculous bench seat between two cushions and when I requested new table they said no! They brought all the food, starters, main and soup at the same time. The squid dish was basically "Squid McNuggets".. Ribs were fatty. Bill was over $200 US dollars for 2 of us."

  • "Great but small portions...great atmosphere during the World Cup"

  • "Both my friend & I found the service impeccable, the restaurant's ambience interesting (we liked the retro look), but the food a bit hit & miss. The roast duck with pancakes was delicious, but the noodles were on the greasy side. The dim sum basket was dainty but good. All in all, the opentable set lunch menu was good valued."

  • "Quite disappointed, I have been to many good Chinese restaurants, China Tang is really an average. The only good thing is the decorations and the ambience. Everything else is just average. Its not worth the money. You can get the same quality of food for 50% of the price at many places. The service isn't that good either."

  • "Identified as the naive Gwylows on our arrival (inspite of the fact I had had dinner there the previous night and paid £400 for 2) we were served the whole duck quickly in a shoddy manner the waiter foolishly leaving the fat exposed under the skin. My unexpected complaint was not welcome and the Manager agreed to replace the food to rid himself of the problem. Shocking value for money. Choy sum was mediocre also. The Good Earth is much better value."

  • "The meal was good so was the service. The crowd was tooooooo loud."

  • "Consistently great food and service and the duck is just amazing!"

  • "On arrival we were immediately taken to our table, the restaurant was full and bustling. Though the drinks took time to come, the food service was quick. The food was good in quality and taste and the portions were just right. We ordered Barbecue Ribs, Steamed Fish, Soft Shelled Crabs, Sliced Lamb, Singapore Noodles and the Roast Duck which is the speciality of the house. Good experience and will definitely revisit."

  • "So as expected, china tang does live up to being a great place for a quiet and cozy meal. The ambiance is fantastic and the entire walk in through the Dorchester lobby makes you feel quite like royalty. The food is also top notch but be prepared for some steep pricing (but then that's expected with such a place, right?). If I was being very critical, the only real flaw I can see is the lack of presentation when the food arrives. I would have expected the food to be presented very fancifully but alas that wasn't the case. If you can look past that, the. Definitely give it a go. "

  • "Great service... Lovely decor and ambience... But... The food was quite simply poor. Chinatown offers much better cuisine and at a fraction of the price. We were so looking forward to dining here but left very disappointed. "

  • "I went to China Tang with my wife and son for lunch during the working week. In short - the experience was underwhelming. The food wasn't bad - but nothing spectacular either in taste or presentation. Service was average - nothing to complain about but nothing to crow about either. The only nice thing was ambience. We went there expecting a five star experience - but returned feeling short changed with what was provided for the money. I have eaten at most of the top tier chinese/Japanese restaurants in the city this would be a bottom quartile rating. "

  • "An awful lunch experience. Quality of food appauling, portion sizes laughable and service was non-existent. Neither I nor my other three guests would return for this shameful experince at a supposedly luxury hotel. "

  • "I was so looking forward to China Tang the supposed successor to The Oriental at The Dorchester. The decor reminiscent of a quality Hong Kong eatery and the toilets majestic. Actually more space than at the tightly packed tables.Service was uninspired almost slovenly and all my three courses came way after the other three people. Food presentation woeful so different to the wonderful Oriental. The spicey chicken was rubbery and fierce hot without caution. The chicken with veg which wasnt the order bizarre in texture, the sea bass in large chunks without finesse. Asparagus thrown randomly in bowl but well cooked. Lamb and beef dishes tasty but no sauce. Dessert good went another table first. Rice was terrible. Ok for local takeaway but ...."

  • "The decor is what you see first and it feels very colonial, as though you had walked into the Raffles in Singapore -- or an Indiana Jones movie set. It is 1930s Asian colonial, and there is a lot of it but it works. There are several rooms which is good because the place is vast and an open space would make it soul-less. Our waiter was attentive, our drinks and food came at a good pace. We ordered two kinds of dim sum (the nice thing is that they serve dim sum for dinner which many Chinese restaurants simply won't do) and they were very light and tasty. We also had stir-fried beef and sauteed shrimp as well as fried noodles: everything was delicious. My favorite moment was dessert: chocolate dim sum -- fabulous!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to China Tang. 15 years ago we lived in Hong Kong and have always yearned for Cantonese food like we used to eat when we were there. Finally we have found it. We loved the lobster and noodles, steamed fish, beef dish and fried squid. The service was excellent, there were many waiters / waitresses on hand to help who also knew how to give clear advice on the menu. It was my birthday and we were even given a birthday surprise at the end however they declined to sing Happy Birthday.! "

  • "Booked this as a weekend treat, very disappointing the moment we arrived, no one took our coats, small things count. Ambience none existent, no back ground music with babies screaming and kids running around. Food was OK but when your paying these sort of prises you expect the best. Got the feeling the CT is living on its name. Hopefully it wont be long before restaurants ban mobile phones, we must have been the only people not using one. "

  • "The location is lovely and the decor is really beautiful, however that is where the positives pretty much ended. The restaurant did not seem busy yet it took ages for my guest and I to be waited upon and the drinks took a long time to arrive. Once the food order was finally taken after hailing the waiter several times, it arrived and was lacking in any presentation and was very mediocre. The main course was nice. The best main course dish was the aubergine hot pot but the dessert which looked so nice was awful. We had ordered the mango cheesecake but it tasted like a gelatinous rubber ball. the worst part of the meal was that no one checked to make sure we were ok, it was almost assumed."

  • "With the reputation of the dorchester, and all the amazing reviews I was expecting more. The dimsum was tasty but nothing spectacular."

  • "We had a 2 course roast duck. The first course was absolutely delicious. There is improvement on the second course - the shredded remaining with lettuce. However it would be really nice to have an option to have the remaining duck that includes legs on them own. Shredded food has only so much appeal, and moreover, the amount does not seem to add up to include both legs, and the yummy roast skin disappears somewhere too. For starters we had steamed scallops which were pricey but delicious and hot chocolate desert was divine. The service was very good and friendly and sommelier’s advices were helpful too. One complaint is however that the food comes out in bulk - as some kind of value canteen. Please do allow some time between courses! "

  • "Unwisely I still tried this restaurant with my husband after having read the bad reviews. I made an exception as we have been to the other Dorchester restaurants which are exceptional. We tried a number of dishes- salt and pepper prawns, schezwan prawns, beef stir fry, dumplings and mango cheesecaske. The cheesecake was delicious, the beef was cooked to perfection however as with the other dishes it lacked any taste. We were left very disappointed and would not expect this food to be served at an average restaurant let alone the Dorchester! I would have honestly been happier with a takeaway. The positives were good service and a beautiful restaurant with charming decor. Shame about the food!"

  • "Poor srvice for the price you pay. Food quality was good. The service was not poor but slow. 15 minutes after we finished main course we ourself asked for dessert menu. This you won't expect from resturant of this standard. No body filled our jasmine tea pot again. Won't go again and won't recommend as there many other good Chinese resturants around."

  • "We are from Hong Kong and we like China Tang in HK which is owned by the same group and the London China Tang. Indeed we like most of their restaurants in HK. We were also at the London China Tang perhaps abouta year ago and it was certainly more than OK. With its great ambience, that's why we invited 2 friends to join us this time. But the soup was barely OK. The BBQ duck+sea jelly fish was OK. The steamed beef was probably the better made dish. The fish, vegtable etc were all really marginal. It surely was not the standard on ewould expect from the restaurant the statue of China Tang!!!!"

  • "Expected a lot more from our first visit to China Tang - food average and quite bland, the honey spare ribs were the worst I have had for a long having little or no meat, also beware of hidden chillies in the chicken with spices dish which were described as "deadly" by the waitress. I think a lot of these pretentious reviews are based on price paid and not quality of food. Overall a very average experience."
    dined on 16/04/2014
  • "I disagree with quite a few of the negative reviews. Service is friendly, efficient and NON-INTRUSIVE! Booked for a table for two, had a superb evening. The waiting ataff were more than happy to oblige to menu changes and although the kitchen was a bit noisy at times, but not major to complain about. Great night, might drop in once again later this month."

  • "Very good food and attentive service. Ordered for sharing - scallops, prawns and crispy chicken were excellent standard. Will be returning for special occasions. However we were disappointed with the non alcoholic cocktails. Overpriced for what was served. We won't be ordering these again. "

  • "Unfriendly wait staff, acted as if we were bothering them. Greasy steak, oily vegetables, little to no flavor, overpriced. Regretfully we wasted time and money. Avoid this restaurant. Not sure how this restaurant receives even adequate reviews. If you're looking for good Asian food - Roka - Mayfair is WONDERFUL."

  • "An articulated choice of different flavours and tastes. Tables are a bit too much close each other. Second time here in a few months, always a very good service and a not-to-miss bar with stunning cocktails."

  • "Service was not up to scratch for the caliber of restaurant it is. Very relaxed waiters and a manager that doesn't know what time the kitchen closes."

  • "I come here a lot but never actually wrote a review. The reason to come here is because it's halal and children enjoy it. However the food is over rated, not the best Chinese and not a cfortable seating. They have so many waiters over looking you and staff has been changed recently. Service is not bad at all, but food needs to come up a few gears! Many come for halal option..."

  • "Very fun environment to eat light delicious Dim Sum, and other traditional Chinese offerings. Service attentive. My only complaint has to due with our Table. It was set with White draping table cloth beautifully, but was a folding table underneath. There was a bar on two sides of the table that hit my son and daughters knees, so they were not able to scoot into the table for a comfortable position while eating. My son moved to across from me, and my daughter tolerated. Overall our experience was memorable, and we will return!"

  • "We visited for my partners birthday. Service was slow all evening. When they brought out the main course they forgot my main dish so my partner had finished by the time I had started. Many staff walked by us whilst we sat with finished plates needing to be cleared. Food tasted great but we popped into Chiquito @ Leicester Square yesterday and had much much better service and paid less than half of what we did at China Tangs. After visiting China Tang a few times I wouldn't rush to return ."
