Diner Reviews
  • "Dined in the restaurant last year and was a much better experience. The menu on the early dining offer now is very limited with no option for steak supplement. Staff were friendly but service standards need improvement. Would I go back?.......no would be the answer. "

  • "food was good service was very poor had to ask 3 times for coffee and tea added the 10% service charge and we did not pay it and was quite taken back when the girl questioned why"

  • "On a not exactly packed Valentine's evening, we felt the service at City Café was often found wanting. Whilst certainly pleasant and friendly, the waiting staff didn't seem at all overrun; in fact it could be said there was ample personnel for the number of gathered diners. Yet there was still an element of panic in the air, that organisation behind the scenes wasn't quite what it should be (3 days later we are still waiting for the 2 glasses of champagne we have paid for, despite requesting it twice and watching other couples around receive theirs). Feeling underwhelmed we decided to sample the separate bar. When a bartender eventually turned up, he noted our order, and disappeared not to be seen again for the next half hour, so we left."

  • "It was valentines. I was assured when booking, weeks in advance, that the a la carte menu would be available as well as the set menu but when we arrived we were informed there was no a la carte menu. The food was quite nice and pleasantly adventurous for a set menu (my girlfriend did not share my enthusiasm). What really let it down was the very poor service. Having to ask multiple people, multiple times for a drink/ a vegetarian option/ to be seated at our table etc. At a Hilton I expect excellent service and considering it was valentines day and it was only about 25% full it was a shock to find the service so bad......The last straw was being chased out the hotel because THEY had apparently charged us the wrong bill. WILL NOT BE RETURNING"

  • "My party of 7 people had a fabulous lunch here . Wonderful service and ambience. The choice of food was excellent and the quality and presentation was first class. I will definitely be returning!"

  • "This is a really nice restaurant with plenty of space between tables and a pleasant ambience. The set lunch menu was excellent, the food competently prepared and presented. A good find."

  • "I was really happy with meal in all.. Presentation was good, and in most part the meal was excellent.. The only small let down was that we had to send my partners desert back to it being extreamly over cooked.. Apart from that I thought it was excellent. The staff were very friendly and made you feel comfortablee. VERY good value for a nice meal with a loved one . I will definitely return again"

  • "My friend and I were very impressed by the quality of the food. We ate early and went for the 2-course plus wine mid-week deal, which was excellent value for money. Surprised that there were not more people dining, even though it was a Monday evening in late November. The service was also very good."

  • "Booked 2 people at 5.30pm on a Wednesday, for a pre-theatre meal. Arrived at 5.20 and no staff were present. We waited on the seats outside until 5.30 when someone appeared to set up. We waited some more and were seated by 5.40. No one else in the restaurant. Order was taken quickly, warm bread given which was nice (although no wholemeal). The food came swiftly. The food quality was good although very small portions (we had a starter and a main). After finishing we asked for the bill, which didn't come for 5 minutes so I got up and asked again. Another 5 minutes and it came. Bought a sandwich from a shop on the way to the theatre because I was still hungry."

  • "My second visit to the restaurant...great food, the fish dishes were flavoursome and delightful along with a tasty goats cheese starter…ending with a tasty snickers creme brûlée. the Service was also much faster then the first visit which was perfect with little children. What was also great is the service from the waiter and waitress and the fact that no-one made me or my friend feel uncomfortable knowing we had two little girls with us (1year old and a 3 year old) …my baby ate so much even i was surprised. Thoroughly enjoyed by the kids and adults and was glad to have come again. will be looking for future special offers. Thank you"

  • "On business trip staying at the hotel. Ate from the early evening 'offer' menu. Only 2 other people dining, so atmosphere very subdued (as was the lighting making it difficult to read the menu). Service fine without being overly intrusive. Meal of starter and main course was well presented if a little on the 'minimalist' size !"

  • "Unfortunately, I had to ask for a new pot of tea as the English breakfast one I received was really weak. Also, after being seated for an hour, I had to ask if our food was ready. This took the special element out of the occasion and we were quite disappointed."

  • "I've been to City Cafe three or four times now and have excellent food and service on every occasion. Excellent, gourmet food, nice atmosphere and friendly staff. If you haven't already, give it a go."

  • "Very disappointing. We ordered the ribeye . Surprised that it would take 25 minutes, but happy to go with that. We ordered a bowl of olives, which we certainly needed as the wait for the ribeye was easily half an hour. It was acceptable when it arrived, and we were content. Two ordered desserts and we all ordered coffee, asking for the coffees to be served with the desserts (since we were on a tight timeline). Desserts arrived, but no coffees. Waited 5 minutes, still no coffees. When we spotted a waiter we asked and reminded him of hour tight timeline. Still no sign or coffees 5 minutes later. In the end we left as the coffees arrived. We'd spent 100 minutes for a main course and coffee, and only 3 other tables occupied!"

  • "Not many people seem to know about City Cafe and it deserves to be busier than it is. The food is always top notch and beautifully presented. Great value too especially Sunday lunch and their small plates. As it's a hotel, the drinks are pricy though."

  • "I love the food at this place. It is always welcoming and friendly place. The food is always excellent and the wine is good and plentiful. It doesn't cost the earth either, it's well priced and the deals you can get are very good. Well worth a visit."
    dined on 06/07/2013
  • "This is the third time I've visited City Cafe and the menu has been greatly improved since my last visit. Very interesting and well thought out food, ready to satisfy anyone who enjoys something a little bit special. Great, friendly service too. It's a posh restaurant without being pretentious, so good for those of us who enjoy our food but who don't wish to stand on ceremony."
    dined on 15/06/2013
  • "City Cafe is a well presented restaurant and in a great location if you are coming into Manchester from the Piccadilly Station. The service we received during our meal was exceptional and meant the only thing we needed to concern ourselves with was having a great time. Even though we were taking advantage of the 3 meals and 1/2 bottle of wine for £25 did not restrict our choice of meals. The food was of a good standard with looking to go into the direction of fine dining. The overall experience was very good and I wouldn't hesitate to advise a friend to book here in the future"

  • "what a great evening we had at the City Cafe the food was great as was the service, we will certainly be back in the future"

  • "I have been visiting this restaurant on and off for 8 year, and can safely say that the summer menu is significantly less super than the winter one and despite asking for a warm table, my table temperature in the summer is always cold. The side bar doesn't appear to be doing much. Also the top floor room maybe better utilized as buffet room as to private bookings, When your head chef changed some years ago the food really changed and was sadly not by favorite restaurant, however my 3 group visits in January 2013 proved to be superb to the standard of the old chef. This visit was a slight disappointment; in that the summer menu was just not as good as the January one."

  • "excellent restaurant, wow the food was amazing on valentines day will be going back again."
    dined on 14/02/2013
  • "We had the special champagne lunch at £14.50 which was exceptional value for 2 courses and a glass of champagne. The service is wonderful. The food was very well executed. This restaurant is in a great location opposite piccadilly station. In the summer the outdoor seating is a bonus. The only down side is the ambiance as the restaurant had only a few tables with guests, although on a Wednesday lunchtime I expect that would be the case in most restaurants in the city centre. We have eaten here previously and have never been disappointed."
    dined on 13/02/2013
  • "great location (directly opposite Piccadilly station) and the hotel which the restaurant is a part of seems nice. But the restaurant lets itself down a little. The staff seem pleasant and attentive, but they are rather slow and disorganised. The food wasn't bad, but the chef lacks creativity (the menu choices were rather basic) and, although the dish presentation was ok, the flavours weren't particularly impressive. The wine menu is also very basic. The decor was ok, fairly modern, but there really was no atmosphere at all. Maybe this place would work for a business lunch, because of its proximity to the station, but I will not be taking my wife back there."
    dined on 15/12/2012
  • "Food preparation aims at the high end of gourmet; some imaginative combinations, satisfying flavours, pleasant plate presentations. Service at times quite slow, a little chaotic and confused. Ambiance borders on the inhospitable. Offers seem to be good value, but going a la carte - as we did - tends to be pricey for the overall experience."
    dined on 20/10/2012
  • "Excellent food but lacking in atmosphere - we did go on a Saturday and I think it is more of a weekday restaurant. However, excellent all round."
    dined on 13/10/2012
  • "I was really excited about dining here as I had a friend spending the weekend with me so thought it would be good for us to dine out !!! The offer itself was fantastic 3 courses for £25.00 !! The staff were all friendly and attentive to ensure we were catered too however the wait from the starter to the main was over an hour this wasnt good but we tried not to let it ruin our evening. When the food did arrive it was warm and not hot leaving a damper , the food overall was fantastic could have endulged it a bit more !!! Great ambience as other couples dining as well. Would go again and do lunch !!!"
    dined on 15/09/2012
  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my meal deal here. I had a half bottle sized carafe of passable wine, a gin and tonic and a beautifully presented and tasty three course meal for £25.Though the portions are not large it was more than adequate without ordering extra side dishes and I was invited to have as much bread as I wanted. In the past the service here has been slow but I could not fault it on this occasion"

  • "Great £25 dine and wine and cocktail deal. Go for it!"
    dined on 01/09/2012
  • "we had the £25 offer at city cafe which was arrival drink, 3courses and 1/2 bottle of wine each.It was a very good value offer and we really enjoyed it. The arrival drink was a choice of spirit with a twist which was very nice. The 3 courses was a choice of 3 on each course so was a bit limited, but what we chose was all very tasty. My husband recommends the lamb highly. The city cafe is very relaxed and the staff was very friendly and professional."
    dined on 18/08/2012
  • "Very good food, great service but was very quiet, lacked a bit of atmosphere."
    dined on 18/08/2012
  • "great food and value, the only downside was the very small size of the mains"
    dined on 17/08/2012
  • "Excellent, high quality food which was presented excellently and tasted equally as good. I use this restaurant regularly for personal and business events. Great place for a business meal as well as special occasions."
    dined on 15/08/2012
  • "We have been to this restaurant twice before but on this occasion we thought that there did not seem as much food especially on the starters. Very good deal 3 courses a welcome drink and half bottle of wine but if they want more people to eat there then I think the portions should be just a little bigger. If I was paying full price then I would be most upset."
    dined on 11/08/2012
  • "Four of us attended on a balmy friday evening and were grateful for the cool elegant interior of the City Cafe. Service was excellent from first to last as the staff were numerous and attentive. The food was tasty, unusually featuring frogs legs on a limited Market Menu. The crumbed plaice and the lemon cheesecake especially gained thumbs up all round. We particularly enjoyed watching the world go by as the various Piccadilly passengers strolled past, homeward bound."

  • "City cafe offers consistently good value...the food is always fresh and imaginative and ambience is very good."
    dined on 25/07/2012
  • "Very nice meal, on the specials offer menu so not too pricey. Small elegant portions, all delicious, lovely setting. Would have stayed at hotel, had I realised it was above the restaurant too."
    dined on 19/07/2012
  • "Pretty good food - for those of you who are not nouvelle cuisine fans then beware, the food here is a bit like that but very tasty and with good portions...friendly waiters and service, and not bad value with a TopTable deal."
    dined on 16/07/2012
  • "Excellent food service and value. Had a very enjoyable evenning."
    dined on 15/07/2012
  • "The food was good, but because we booked a 2 or 3 course meal deal the options were limited with steak being a considerable add onto the set price. The atmosphere was nothing special, I didn't feel like I was in a top restaurant. Will."
    dined on 10/07/2012
  • "Only one option for starter, and 2 for main course. No vegetarian option"
