The location of Cockadoo in leafy nuneham courtenay makes it somewhat of a destination restaurant for all but the few residents. However,as designated driver,I was delighted to find the food & ambience to be good enough not to prompt a longing for a glass of wine or 3. Indeed, I took the opportunity to indulge my love affair with spicy food by sampling a Jungle Curry - never a great wine match anyway - and, having been assured by the lovely waitress that it could be made "super hot" and still pack a flavour punch, I have to say that it certainly delivered on both counts. My girlfriend's choice of Ostrich steak was also perfectly cooked and worthy of note. The extras necessary to create a full meal - rice, noodles etc - can push the price up.

The restaurant was very quiet but this simply reflected the day of the week (Tuesday) and that it is principally an evening location. That said the place had a really good ambience and atmosphere, and was a very pleasant place for lunch. The service was excellent. There was a wide ranging menu with options for a variety of tastes. The food was of consistent quality and quantity. The restaurant would be really good for both group bookings and romantic occasions in the evening.

First visit to Cockadoo so did not have a clue what to expect. Very impressed with the overall decor and feel if the place. Being Valentines Evening it was very busy and we had a set menu which was very varied and delicious. Obviously as we did not have the opportunity to order off the menu I cannot comment on this. But we will be going again

Went for Sunday lunch. A liitle quiet with only 4 tables occupied but really friendly staff and excellent food. Went for the Cockadoo mixed starters which was a good selection of spare rib, prawn toast, dim sum, spring roll, chicken satay etc. Main course we had duck with fruity curry, stir fry seafood in Sambal sauce, and salmon, prawn, cod and scallop in panang curry and they were all tasty, interesting and well presented. Suspect this is more of an evening restuarant but we thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

I invited a group of old friends to meet for dinner at the Cockatoo and we had a fabulous time. The food was absolutely superb! Spoilt for choice and too busy catching up with each other that we opted for the set gourmet meal. So glad we did. The food was excellent, beautifully served and presented. The Sea bass steamed in lotus leaves was absolutely divine. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough and can’t wait to return!

Second time we have eaten here and the experience was very good on both occasions. Asian food, so Thai, Chinese, Malaysian and Japanese dishes are all on the menu. Starters, main course and deserts - this is not a typical UK Chinese restaurant where you expect numerous small dishes and a bowl of rice. Dimmed lighting and relaxed atmosphere. Good service. We ate on a quiet Tuesday evening. However, they do hold occasional tribute nights, which I believe can be quite packed.

Having only just moved to Oxford, and having nothing to go by but the heavily mixed reviews online of Cockadoo, I took a chance and booked it up for my girlfriend's birthday, mainly as she loves Thai and Asian food. We had a brilliant night! Many of the more negative reviews I read were based on the slow speed and charmless nature of the staff, we didn't find that at all. They were extremely polite, friendly and accommodating. Food was good (vegetarian options nice, but need more vegetables in the tofu dishes), portions decent-sized. Service was attentive and quick but never intrusive. All in all, a very chilled-out dining and drinking experience. Recommended.

Menu is big and inspiring, food is presented beautifully, everything tasted great, actual restaurant is very nice.....but service was very very slow and they wouldn't control children abusing a lovely piano. We sat down at 12.20 and had to leave (for a prior appointment) without finishing at 13.55 having only had starters & most of a rushed main, so I'd advise to give it at least 2hrs 30mins if you want a full three-course meal with coffee etc. We did ask nicely if they could stop the children from hitting away on the piano, but nothing much seemed to happen, and much as we love kids this did ruin our experience as it went on for the entire time except when they briefly sat to eat. Great ambiance and child friendly don't always go together.

This was our first visit to the Cockadoo and it was very impressive. The dining room is large and the lighting was subdued but each table is lit with a pinspot so it gave an excellent ambiance. The food was delicious and the staff were very attentive, so overall it was an excellent evening.

On arrival there isn't an obvious arrivals area, so we went to the bar for help. The staff were friendly and fairly helpful, so after a pre dinner drink we then ambled into the restaurant where we we stood around for quite a while. Having been given a stiff ignoring by 2 of the waiters, someone finally came along and showed us to out table. The food was pretty good overall, but there should and could have been better advice offered as we ordered; the result being that we were left somewhat lacking in the main course as my meal really leant itself to having a side dish with it. That said, what we did have was nice. The delivery of the wine reminded me of Basil Fawlty, but this time with a screw top! The service really needs to improve

  • Walked out as service so bad

For the first time ever we walked out of a restaurant for poor service. Having been before knew the food was good and different so we booked again, sadly we never got to eat as after 30 minutes no one had even been to ask if we wanted a drink let alone any food. even after catching the lone waitress's eye. Another table gave up waiting for service and got their own drinks from the bar. With a full restaurant and only one visible waitress it was clear this was not going to be an enjoyable evening so we left. We explained the position to front of house, but they had nothing to offer in way of an apology or explanation. A very disappointing level of customer service and with plenty of restaurants in the area we will not be going back.

Went to cockadoo for the first time last Saturday with my fiancé. Despite passing it to drive back to Leeds every weekend! the starter came in a reasonable time and was absolutely delicious. (sharing starter) I read in a previous review that there was a long wait for food- I agree, the main course did take a while to arrive but my fiancé and I were in no rush and we were just enjoying having a drink and a chat!! Mains came and were absolutely amazing. Desserts (it was a Saturday - treat day!) we shared 3 scoops of movenpick ice cream - extremely well dressed up and presented! I also had a brandy liqueur coffee - the cream was floating so that's always a plus in my book! Excellent setting and even better presentation. Would recommend

The food at Cockadoo is beyond reproach. I cannot emphasise enough how amazing the food is. The wasabi prawns, prawns on toast and crispy chilli beef were the best dishes I have had in any restaurant in years. It was small things that let Cockadoo down. We were seated in the side room which does lack much in the way of ambience and the music was quite loud and intrusive. Waiting staff were very friendly but 2 of our main dishes arrived significantly behind the rest of the food and we waited over half an hour for our coffee. In Cockadoo's defence, the restaurant was packed. The manager is lovely and she makes an effort to speak to all her customers. Despite my quibbles I am rating Cockadoo outstanding because of the quality of the food.

I have driven past this restaurant on many occassions and it's appearance from the road does not lend itself to the interior of this restaurant and bar. The interior has a very modern twist for a Thai Restaurant; high vaulted ceilings with beautiful chandeliers, sumptuous furnishings and lots of atmosphere. The food was very good and all freshly cooked to order. The service let the evening down a little. Our white wine was left on the table next to the bottle of water, no ice bucket and no offer to pour any more glasses throughout the evening. Despite the small disappointment we would definitely give it another try.

The service was brilliant, the restaurant was quiet with very few tables. The white wine was not cold enough, despite leaving it on ice for a while before drinking. The mixed starter was delicious. The main courses were a BIG let down! The goose had a tiny piece of edible meat and the rest was fat, definitely not worth the money, despite the fact that I told the waiting staff, nothing was done about this. My husband asked for the baked duck, but with the sauce from the fried duck, they said this couldn't be done because they had already been made that way!!!! Precooked and already in the sauce, doesn't sound too good really?!! Good choice of ice creams, but not enough choice of other desserts, and all pre made by movenpick.

Very contemporary and attractive restaurant freshly renovated 2 years ago. Good menu of Thai dishes - a bit too much adapted to British tastes for me but the food and service were excellent. One of the waitresses suggested that next time I should try one of the more 'special' items on the menu. We had Tom Yum soup and then a red and a green Thai curry (both prawn) and we definitely intend to go again soon. Very quick to get to from East Oxford.

In fact the carni's tried the veggie crispy duck and veggie calamarie which was really quite realistic...perhaps a bit too realistic for the veggies ;-) Nothing was too much trouble in fact the owners wife even whipped up a highly decorated birthday cake for my Wife as I hadn't brought one along.
