  • Disappointing Dining Experience

Had lunch yesterday and decided to opt for the Lunch menu. Both my wife and I had the Butternut Squash soup to start, it was very watery and had very little flavour. I had the chicken and she had the fish, and that was all that was served on the plate. Anything else had to be ordered as a side order, which we had done, ( but your side order will easily serve 2 people ), but your wait staff won't tell you. The restaurant was very noisy and the service pretty average. Getting your main course and then sitting waiting as your side orders had not arrived is not what I expected. Overall it was an average dining experience and I expected it to be much better. It seems to be that you are paying for the name of Fortnum & Mason rather than a good quality meal. I would not recommend it.

Probably a little excessive for a regular lunch spot (at least for me!) but a brilliant choice if you want to treat someone special. I took my mum for her birthday and she really enjoyed the setting, and the food. I left a note that the booking was to celebrate her 70th so was a little disappointed that they didn't acknowledge this but it's a minor detail.

Wonderful surroundings and a lively ambience. The food was well presented and delicious and the waiting staff charming. However the service was a bit haphazard, which meant that our meals all arrived at different times and so the food that arrived first was cold by the time we were all served ; cold eggs Benedict are a disappointment. The coffee was excellent and stayed hot to the bottom of the pot. Its a great place for people watching and we all had a lovely time. Had the service been more focussed the occasion would have been perfect. Something for Fortnum and Mason to reflect upon...

A household name and a restaurant which we too have enjoyed for many years. Alas, this Fortnum's enterprise is badly slipping. No one at reception to show us to our reserved table. Welsh rarebit -a thin layer of over-cooked cheese on desiccated toast. Kedgeree- just tasteless rice and peas with a very few flakes of smoked haddock and a sour after- taste that lingered to breakfast next morning. The side orders of courgettes and new potatoes were very good so they can get things right. We didn't wait to order desserts- eating time already consumed in waiting time. Shake up this part of the Fortnum's enterprise and we will come back.

We had lunch again when Christmas shopping. Excellent choice the food was great the service just right and the ambience perfect. The fish and chips is really good, served with the only mushy peas I will eat. The only thing missing was a wally. Breakfast is really special here, one of the best in London. Booking is advisable at Christmas time, ask for a windows seat.

I've been eating Welsh Rarebit (posh cheese on toast) in the Fountain Restaurant for nearly 50 years. My granny used to take me, then my mother, next I took my son and now we go with friends. It's fabulous, quality English food, served in a fantastic setting. Always consistent, never let's me down and it's a classic. However, there were some service issues on Saturday, but I can forgive this because I love Fortnum's Fountain Restaurant and will continue to go there. I will introduce my grandchildren to it as soon as they're old enough to hold a knife.

We were greeted by a stony-faced woman and shown to a table by a service point, although the restaurant was almost empty, not a good first impression. I was with elderly relatives and did not want to make a change; I would otherwise have asked for a different table. There was a lot of clanking of cutlery in and out of drawers and conferring of waiters beside me throughout the meal, this was noticeable as the restaurant was quiet. The waiting staff were very pleasant and professional when serving us. We had excellent bread, house wine and coffee. However kedgeree arrived lukewarm on cold plates and our salad had to be replaced as the dressing, which had been poured copiously over it, was inedibly salty. The food was disappointing.

You expect the service and meal to be top rate and you will not be disappointed. What you get extra is that when the waiter engaged in polite friendly conversation as he seated us at our table, we mentioned that we could not find any Tayberry jam. He came back later having checked the shop, storeroom and buyers as to when more would be available.

Lovely setting and very good service. The 'all day menu' serves a good selection of light lunches - perfect for lunching ladies and business lunches. It could easily become a gluttonous expensive treat - so many nice dishes on the menu, but there is sufficient choice with lighter options that are reasonably priced for such a lovely setting. Omelette Arnold Bennett very good.

My son is at university in london so we as a family came to London for the day on his 21st Birthday. We wanted somewhere special to eat and this really did fit the bill. I mentioned on the booking it was for his 21st and they had decorated his plate when they brought his sweet course ( mango mousse) and sang Happy Birthday which was a nice touch as I hadn't expected anything. The staff were very attentive, the food was lovely and a perfect setting for a special celebration

The Fountain Restaurant at Fortnum's has been one of a very few favourite restaurants we enjoy in London. It is excellent and reliable. The high standard does not change. Food is always as you expect...good! Menu is varied and good for both snacks and heavier fare. Service is quick and attentive. The room, located at ground level on the corner of Duke and Jermyn Streets is lovely and bright, with an elegant sit-up bar. Prices are reasonable for the area. Highly recommended. To be sure, reserve in advance.

Providing you are happy with the set lunch choice you will find the standard of food worthy of 5 stars both in presentation and taste. The lunch menu given it's financial constraints was excellent both in its quality and combination of ingredients. Knocks the spots of other restaurants serving similar choices. I was impressed indeed as I frequently eat out at lunchtime and tend to choose the set lunch menus which can be rather disappointing. Comfortable seats, linen tablecloths and napkins, pleasant surroundings with attentive and very polite staff and no hint of wanting to hurry us along.

Found the room very noisy on arrival but quietened down later. Always a problem when have no carpets and sound magnifies on hard floors. Wendy had lobster and egg in marie rose sauce for a starter, duck for main course and then chocolate tart at end. Wendy had severe diarrhoea the next day. The lobster and the red cabbage for the main course were both heavily covered in sauce, so much so that the natural taste was smothered - left the red cabbage, which she normally enjoys. Has the chef changed?? Have been to eat there twice before and loved it but struggled to make a good selection from the menu this time and having been so ill afterwards would probably choose to go elsewhere next time.

Have been a regular visitor for Fortnum's - as a treat, as we live in Wales. Took our grand-daughter there on Wednesday for her first visit and hopefully future visit. But, honestly, the atmosphere of luxury has all gone now. It used to be a wonderful place to lunch or tea, with fine table linen and comfort personified. Now we eat off hard tables with thin tatty mats, which look very cheap. From the food point of view, we would always recommend Welsh Rarebit - the best there is. For the money you are charging, it is just not good enough. Most reluctantly, I fear we will have to look to other venues for a taste of luxury, which is such a shame and I am very sorry.

The Staff were polite! charming and attentive . My only criticism is that I arrived 5 minutes early, and was kept standing for far too long Before being shown to my table, or asked whether I needed a seat. This was not the most hospitable of ' Welcomes' ....! Also despite asking for a jug of water, my request was ignored. This Service needs improvement , it is not acceptable at the sort Of Prices that the visitor pays!

Such a disappointing experience - service was slow and inattentive. Coffee while served in lovely silver pots was lukewarm. The toast to accompany the cooked breakfast didn't arrive until my husband had finished. There was no generosity in this overpriced experience - we had to ask for Jam to accompany toast and croissants - no one asked if we'd like any more coffee or tea and yet there was a 12.5 per cent service charge added to the bill. The fountain restaurant itself is noisy which makes conversation difficult. The entire experience was underwhelming and not one that I would recommend.
