The food was very nicely prepared and presented, though the level of service does need a bit of tightening. Though all the staff were very good, there were long delays between each course without any staff intervention (drinks orders, topping up water; the table next to us cancelled their cheese course having waited too long). A break is fine, but when it's 45 minutes plus, you do need some staff contact. The restaurant was busty, but there were more than enough staff if managed more effectively.

The food was nice and the staff were very attentive but unfortunately the quantity of food was rather small and choice was very limted, The cost of a glass of wine and the added service charge (for a table of 2 people) seemed a bit excessive and pushed what should have been a reasonably priced fixed menu into something a lot more expensive. I'm sure the Caley is suffering from the tram works like all the other businesses in the area but sadly the restaurant wasn't very full (Sunday lunchtime) so it rather lacked atmosphere.

We went for the to table menu - 2 courses for £14.50 - and were pleasantly surprised that the limited choices on this menu were so delicious. The ambience was really relaxing and the staff were attentive and friendly. This is a great place to go for a special meal that doesn't cost the earth yet has a very professional kitchen behind it.

I'd heard great things about the new team at the Brasserie but will reserve judgement till another visit. On this occasion, we decided to try the fixed price menu which looked great value, albeit with only two choices per course. Unfortunately our chosen starter, the salmon mousse, was unavailable and the other starter, a terrine, did not convince me. The fish main couse was declared very good but my pork chop was very small with very little accompaniment. The creme brulee was very good. Although the restaurant was far from busy, we had a very long and unexplained wait between starter and main course.

Thought we would try Sunday Roast Lunch as we had previously had Afternoon Tea in the Peacock Room and we were not dissapointed. Roast was served pink but we were told that and as we asked for ours to be cooked a bit more which was not to a problem. Service was to an exceptionally high standard and we will not hesitate in going back again.

Considering the Caledonian Hotel has always been such a wonderful place to stay and to eat, I was expecting a lot. Suffice to say I was disappointed. The food was very ordinary. My main course of roast beef and veg could have come from hundreds of carverys up and down the land. The Yorkshire puddings were over cooked and the roast potatoes not as good as my own. I felt the starter course was over salted but interesting. I certainly will not be rushing back. However the service was exemplary. But, there is little ambience. The room needs colour and........ Who decided the bathroom tiles round the bar looked right ? I will not be rushing back !

We had a fair meal but given the hype things should have been a lot better. For starters they had run out of some starters and the range of seafood on offer was not as good as it should be in a location like Edinburgh - so close to the sea. My whole plaice was undercooked and lacked a certain flair. The main restaurant waiter seemed to think a good alternative to some fish was lamb tagine and at the end of the day, it was particularly good value. For the £100 spent, I could have eaten like a king in London and with fresh oysters and lobster !

Service. Initially attentive but went downhill to the point we waited 20 minutes between finishing mains and having to ask to see dessert menu. Food mixed. Starters ok. Main of duck confit really salty and trout nothing to speak of. Desserts (hen finally came) where the best part of the meal when told of long wait for service maitre d was indifferent. Won't be back.

Six of us dined at Galvins Brasserie for dinner on a Saturday + loved it. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable. The snails were cooked to perfection served in the shell (as they do in Paris) in a delicious oil + garlic combination. The lemon sole was delicous - with option to have bones removed. Portions were fairly large for a Michelin star restaurant. The apple tart melted in the mouth. The cheese was "wheeled out" on a trolly with a description cheese provided by the waitress, and a selection of cheese could be chosen. Lovely wine - not overpriced at £25 a bottle. A highlight was no-one rushed you, we were not told the table would have to be vacated within 2 hours - something that appears to be becoming disappointingly popular.

We were a party of 6 and we all had the same thought about Galvin Brasserie...........very underwhelmed by the whole experience. Whilst the food is of good quality and has good menu, there was just something lacking with the food and it didn't have the WOW factor. We did all agree though that the desserts were excellent and the highlight of the dinner. There is something not quite right either about the atmosphere or the decor we found it clinical and harsh and just doesnt feel comfortable. The Maitre d' didnt take the time to ask if we were enjoying our dinner at any point of the evening but he was quick enought to take the tip from the table as we were leaving. All in all very disappointed really and not sure if I would return.

What started out as a very quiet experience (we were the first diners to arrive for Sunday lunch at 1pm) the restaurant got really busy and the atmosphere was great. The service was first class and didn't wane as the restaurant began to fill up. As you would expect from Galvin's the food was top notch. We'll be back.

I was able to book a prime time Saturday night table for 4 at a few days notice, which struck me as odd. The reastaurant called me mid afternoon to check for any special requirements and to advise that the lights would be out for an hours that evening for world earth hour. It sounded romantic - I assumed they would place extra candles on our table at the time, but no. Eating langoustines by one tealight between 4 diners was an experience! By 8pm both the razor clams and oysters were finished. To comment on service, I must split it into quality (which was excellent) and quantity (not nearly enough, we did receive an apology for it being slow). My starter and wine were removed from the bill without me requesting this, which I appreciated.

Reviewed 14 February 2013 We have eaten lunch and dinner here on several occasions. The staff are very knowledgeable (which helps a lot with the more unfamiliar French terms!) and will remember your preferences every time. There will be something on the menu to match your mood, from the deliciously comforting Vichyssoise of Smoked Haddock, through daily specials and classic French dishes, with crustacea as another option. Someone very helpful will be on hand to interpret the wine list and all in all you will end up feeling far removed from any grey Edinburgh day outside. Fred and his standout team will make every visit a relaxing, enjoyable one. Keep an eye open too for the special offers.

And just as good as the first - cannot rate this place highly enough for food and service - attentive at the right level, delicious tastes and high quality. The venue is a little upscale Pizza Express, and on this particular Monday, when it was very quiet, a little soul-less but hey, that's not what you go for. The set menu was delicious and all in with a shared desert, wine and a glass of port each we were £70 for two - you can't beat it!

The special offer for toptable clients was very good value. It was not witout some trepidation that i booked Galvins having had two poor meals there soon after it opened. What a transformation, well informed staff who were attentive and courteous. The food was good - delicious pork cheeks, beef daube and puddings to die for - special mention for the souflees. I am so pleased that this is now near to the standard of the galvins in London - Edinburgh needed a restaurant like this and now it is here.

Excellent value for a classy restaurant. Layout of the restaurant is really nice and spacious which is preferable to other restaurants as you have more personal space and privacy. Waitress was really helpful and discreet. Will definitely be visiting this restaurant again and I recommend it to anyone. I had booked this restaurant through toptable.co.uk and this gave me a variety of options which were excellent value. You can get a Sunday roast for £12.50, two courses for £14.50 or three for £18.50. The balance struck between quality and value is second to none across Edinburgh and it is family friendly as well which gives the restaurant a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

I had booked the special offer for Sunday lunch, but when we came to ordering we were told there was none left! They claim to serve Sunday lunch until 4pm, our booking was for 1.45pm so not exactly late. Even more disappointing as I had booked this for my boyfriend's birthday as a special treat. Service was poor, they didn't care that we were disappointed, and it took a while to get anyone's attention. I wouldn't mind this normally bit expect a little more from a brasserie of this standard. We were served our food very quickly - too quickly - and were in and out in less than an hour. Not exactly the special Sunday lunch I had imagined.

The £28.50 3 course menu has a good range of classic French bistro dishes which are well cooked and nicely presented. A good wine list though slightly expensive - chose carefully... Helpful, friendly yet unobtrusive service. The set up and typeface of the menu and wine list could be improved - somewhat confusing and difficult to read in the half-light!

I went for the £28.50 menu and was pleasantly surprised by the choice that was permitted. I had steak tartare followed by the special which was mixed fish. They have a cheese of the day which was a cheddar, however i wanted a different one which they did. My only negative comments are, we ordered a £32 bottle of wine which had a substantial amount of sediment in the bottom, when i questioned this, all i was told was that 'this was common for that bottle and it really should have been decanted'. They never offered to decanter it.... Having said that the restaurant is nice, very busy and the food is excellent quality and presentation.

Dining with my daughter on my visit to Edinburgh. The restaurant staff twigged that it was a birthday celebration from the birthday card that I left on the table. When the dessert came, my plate had 'happy birthday' piped in chocolate around the edge. Wonderful touch! From this and other gestures, I gained the impression that the restaurant staff genuinely cared about the service they gave to customers. The food wasn't bad either, and I was pleasantly surprised by the bill at the end of the meal.

In Edinburgh for a short break and not sure where to eat on the Sunday evening. Selected the Galvin Brasserie De Luxe. A little difficult to find as the restaurant is not on Princes Street but the hotel of which it is a part, is. We were the first to arrive at 18:30 but other diners followed soon after. Lovely greeting, good table, comfortable room. The inclusive apperitif was very good, the menu is varied and appealing. The first Top Table restaurant we've used that registered our need for one guten free meal and they were well prepared. The food was well presented and excellent, the service was excellent: very professional. The only gripe - £3.50 a cup of coffee and no mint or chocolate or offer of a refill. An excellent restaurant.

Faultless, brilliant cooking, nice (and in some cases very skilled) staff led down by poor supervision which gave a full on headless chicken effect, irritating at times despite us being very laid back about it. Lovely decor if a tad corporate, chilly by the window but then, this is Edinburgh. Great value if you're careful (we weren't). We'll come back.
