  • "I have been to the Gardner's Arms before and I have to say that on this occasion the food was a little bland. The service (as always) is really excellent and the staff really know how to treat customers properly (so rare these days). We have a little dog and she is welcome too which is great. Shame about the food - perhaps we chose a bad day (evening of Mothering Sunday) and the chef had had enough!! Will go again though because its a nice place and maybe choose something else on the menu. BTW I had veal - another of our party had burger (was pronounced as OK) and two others had the Sunday lunch (sweet cabbage far too sweet - although lots of meat)."

  • "This is the second time we have been to the Gardeners Arms. Previously it had just been my wife and I but as we enjoyed it so much we took our to adult children with us to celebrate mothers day. We had a lovely meal and the service was excellent. I think the prices on both visits has averaged £28 per person. This is at the higher end of what I generally pay when I visit a pub restaurant so personally I would only use it for special occasions/romantic visits. Nevertheless its a lovely drive out and an excellent venue."

  • "Meat on all 3 dishes ordered was chewy, ie duck venison veal, but apart from that ok. also overpriced by about 205. Service was good and when we complained they paid for a round of drinks"

  • "A bit disappointed with the food on this occasion, one meal was served on a cold plate, the chicken and frites also got cold as served on a board/in a tin cup and the only vegetable was a whole garlic which was a bit overpowering. We also had the venison pie (not much filling, more air than meat) and there were chewy chunks which tasted more like rabbit. On the plus side, the service was excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful even though it was a busy lunchtime."

  • "Sunday roast was poor , `plastic` lamb and pork slices & tough even the waiter mistook the pork for chicken ! But worst of all was my wife was refused a half pint of Guiness on the basis they only sell pints ! We will ensure that all our friends go elsewhere , there are plenty of better options in the area."

  • "Have eaten at the Gardeners Arms a few times now and never disappointed. For good pub food you will not go wrong. One request….. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, not Australian!"

  • "Perfectly placed opposite Ardingly showground where you can walk your dogs, the Gardeners Arms are v.welcoming to both people and dogs. The staff are lovely - really friendly and welcoming. The food is great - just a wide enough choice for there to be "something for everyone" without feeling that it is pre-packaged or bought in. There are always daily specials and the puddings are highly recommended. Good value - not cheap, but not v expensive either"

  • "We were seated by a log fire which was regularly stoked. Staff very friendly and efficient. Food was good, although we found the choice of mains rather limited. Desserts were lovely, portions rather large though! Not a cheap place to eat, but worth the money. We went on a Saturday night and the clientele were 50+, as are we! Recommend and we will go again."

  • "Looked forward to meeting up with an old friend here but it was so disappointing. The food was very poor. Not much of it, low quality, stale rolls, expensive for what it was. The staff are charming though."

  • "We love this pub and great place at the end of a long country walk. The ambience is lovely and nice seating outside. Food is usually very good and was pretty good on this occasion but service was slow and frustrating when they try to remember your order by heart instead of writing it down, then get part of it wrong! Overall I'd definitely recommend a visit- not cheap but not extortionate and some cheaper lunch options."

  • "Our favourite venue as the food is always excellent, whatever the occasion. The whole team are exceptional - paying attention to detail at all times - you are made to feel very special! Alfresco or indoor dining - the ambience is always very comfortable, relaxing & enjoyable. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "We eat here quite often because the food is good and the staff are always welcoming and very helpful. This is especially important to me as I am Celiac and lactose intolerant and often have to ask for variations to the set menu."

  • "I have been to this restaurant a number of times there and love going. The atmosphere is really nice. The staff are really helpful and friendly. The food is terrific and really nicely presented. What's not to like, as they say? An extremely pleasant way to spend your time and I thoroughly recommend it. I have never been disappointed. It does tend to get crowded when there is a fair or event on at the showground so it's always wise to book."

  • "This is not your normal pub grub. The menu has been devised by a chef that is obviously passionate about food and wants happy customers. My husband normally always finds something that isn't to his liking about the meal but couldn't fault his meal here at all. That means we'll definitely be going back - hurrah! The flavours of each dish went really well and presentation was excellent."

  • "Choosing the Gardners Arms helped make a good day great. The staff were so friendly, welcoming and attentive (without being in the way as it were). The food was fabulous, really tasty, well prepared and presentation was good. All in all a great meal and a great venue. One small gripe - the 25% off loyalty card that I had was not valid on a Saturday although it does not say this anywhere on the card."

  • "Although service and ambience good, and it was our second visit, the food was so disappointing. We enjoyed first visit , hence return. Two out of four roast dinners were returned- not only cold, but roast potatoes barely roasted and "honey roasted carrots" were boiled or steamed. We didn't have starters (in anticipation of yummy Roast) What a disappointment. The two plates were replaced- meal at least was then hot, but certainly not what was expected. Desserts were nice. Cannot recommend."

  • "I was tasked with finding a good steak for my husbands birthday lunch. This totally delivered on this. Food was plentiful and top notch. Waitress was friendly, service was a little slow but forgivable down to all other plus points. There were a few dogs in the pub and this for us added a rustic charm. When we go next time I may ask not to sit so close to the door as it was a little drafty at times. Great new favourite place to go."

  • "The service was absolutely faultless, very friendly and exceptionally knowledgable on the food, food was good and was well presented and tasty , we had a great evening. Thank you"

  • "Had a lovely evening at The Gardners Arms. Food was yum from starter to pud. Good menu selection and my chicken salad was great. Two of the girls had cod and loved that too. Very cosy inside, very clean, plenty of space between tables so your conversation isn't over heard!"

  • "A few of us had been here before and rated it highly, so we booked our pre-Christmas lunch and were not disappointed! We were greeted immediately, shown to our table and drink orders taken. The ambience was great, as always, in this friendly bar/restaurant, with log fire. The menu was varied enough for us to take a while browsing and chatting. The poussin meal was ordered by three people, and came with chips and salad - all rated it highly. The smoked salmon in beetroot was excellent, very succulent, but the crushed garlic new potatoes were a disappointment as they were swimming in a dish of oil. The duck breast was excellent. The 'mini' puddings were delicious and came with hot drink of choice - very good value. We recommend it."

  • "Our party was very impressed with the lovely menu on offer, the food was quick to arrive and staff very pleasant and attentive. The quirky gardening theme is great and I loved the presence of Alan Titchmarsh, Monty Don and Chris Beardshaw etc in the ladies loo - quite a draw :) As locals we will be back."

  • "Having eaten at the Gardeners Arms many times, and thoroughly enjoyed it, we decided to take a friend there for her birthday lunch. We had bigged the place up so much it was inevitable that, on this occasion, there would be a problem! Our Sunday roasts were tepid, the meat unchewable and the veg cremated. But, and this is a big but, the staff were excellent and dealt with our issues in a professional friendly manner - and to my complete satisfaction. The desert options cater for all tastes and we enjoyed them immensely. Things don't always go to plan and problems are bound to arise from time to time, but it's how they are dealt with that makes all the difference .....we will certainly be eating there again in the future."

  • "We had a 3 course Sunday lunch here and it was simply amazing, better than some more expensive places, we will most definitely return. Simply wonderful."

  • "Fantastic location, right opposite the South of England Show ground, feels like you are in the depths of the country. Very polite staff, will do anything for you, menu was varied plus a few specials, good quality and cooked well."

  • "Very good main course of a bass Little, except sorbet, on the dessert menu for those watching cholesterol levels! Low fat options would be an idea. Unless that's missing the whole point of a pudding."

  • "We went to the GA for a birthday lunch and I have to say the staff could not have been more accommodating - from changing our booking time to help ensure we could all be together to going along with the birthday surprise (our son arriving 'unexpectedly') We had a nice table and all of the waitresses were very helpful, polite and efficient. The food was as ordered, and again, the waitress was flexible with allowing us to choose different veg for our roast but when it arrived the beef was a little on the chewy side and a tad overcooked. Massive Yorkshires though! Roast tatties could have done with being more crispy (a weekly challenge in our house!) and extra gravy quickly arrived. Summary - Good service let down by lesser quality food."

  • "A meal in the pub is never going to be as good as home cooked but overall this was a good stab at it. It was tasty, hot and filled a gap but at £12.50 it was over priced. For the size of the portions and what it contains, the roast dinner should have been around £10 a head. It's a constant source of discussion, should you stay in and cook and have a great roast or go out and have something that is OK - for £12.50 I want it to be great and for the cost of the ingredients it should be. Three roast potatoes, swede and cabbage - up the quota and charge the same and you will be packed. It was a good night out, but at £135 for atable of six having a main and dessert it starts to get expensive. On the plus side, the waitress was fantastic."

  • "We have visited the Gardeners Arms a few times before and the food has been good. But on our last visit it was disappointing. I ordered the falafel and holumi burger and it was all under cooked, as were the chips. Which is a shame as I have eaten that same meal before and it was lovely. Bad chef that day?"
    dined on 17/11/2013
  • "We love this pub! We have been several times and it's always good. For lunch their very good value sandwiches are tasty, well-presented and enormous. The evening meal menu is very varied with imaginative starters and an interesting range of mains. The staff have always been brilliant - attentive, helpful and friendly. Good pub ambience and tastefully decorated in keeping with the Gardening theme - not sure about Alan Titchmarsh looking at me in the loo though!"

  • "Once again, my visit with a friend to the Gardener's Arms this week was most enjoyable. The environment, both inside and outside, is delightful, the staff extremely helpful and friendly and the food delicious and well-presented."

  • "Lovely feel to the place and welcoming staff. Appealing selection of real ales while you browse the menu and a varied selection of food options. Nice surroundings inside with the option of outside seating around a fire pit !"

  • "Booked Sunday lunch as a late celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary. Had been a bit doubtful about the menu range especially for the vegetarian options but the Messe starter and remaining roast and veg choices worked well. Excellent service from each member of staff and our lead waitress was personable and very helpful."
    dined on 13/10/2013
  • "Food was well prepared and well presented. Service just on the edge of being too slow when you have two five-year-olds to keep amused. Disappointed by the small size of the (Duck) main course (those that chose other options seemed to get MUCH more) and the comparatively large price. Overall it was OK - might go back - would definitely warn friends that they might find it poor value for money."

  • "Although we are not particularly local (coming from Warlingham), we go as often as we can to this lovely pub/restaurant. We simply cannot fault it. The food is delicious and well presented. The staff are a delight, as is the atmosphere. I cannot recommend it highly enough."
    dined on 06/10/2013
  • "The staff were friendly but our meal was a big disappointment. We were quite happy to pay the £14 for steak and ale pie. When it came the pie was in a pie dish with the suet pastry crust covering the top it was served with mash potato in a small ramekin dish. The pastry was thin and over cooked. The meat underneath was good but very little of it and very little of anything else in the dish. The size of the pie dish far exceeded what was needed for the amount of meat and content it contained. The mash potato had a skin on the top. The chicken pie that was also ordered faired better but again the mash served with it had a skin. The meal was very over priced. As I said We do not mind paying those prices if the meal is worth it and it wasn't."

  • "Not our first visit and we will be returning. All staff are very friendly and helpful and there is a wide range of delicious food. Gave 4 stars for abience as the restaurant and bar were full - everyone very jolly but a bit loud! Lovely to see the fire pit alight on a balmy September evening."

  • "I have to comment that the service was impeccable, the staff were so friendly and attentive."

  • "Had a lovely meal at the Gardeners Arms on a Saturday evening. The menu was varied and we were quite happy to pay a bit extra for the food. However, the portion sizes were just not enough. My husband had the meat pie which looked huge but had very little veg and potato and was very watery in itself. I had the leek and tomato tart which was lovely but was just a slice with a bit of salad - could have done with chips or a nice garlic bread. It was very nice food but the portion sizes need to be a bit bigger. Treacle tart was fantastic for pudding."

  • "If you're looking for somewhere that serves great food in a wonderful location, this is the one! Food was delicious, good healthy portions, and even though the restaurant was busy, it didn't feel it. Thoroughly recommended and I will definitely be going back."
