Diner Reviews
  • "At Gauthier the quality of the food is constantly excellent: we have been dining here several times by now and neve beed disappointed. The service attentive but unobtrusive and willing to help. I believe that the set with 3 courses, 2 glasses of wine plus a glass of champagne, coffee and petit fours at 40£ is excellent value for money given the quality on offer. One of the best overall deal in town for fine dining."

  • "Ambience was lovely but the service was very slow on the evening we went there. We waited a long time between courses and we are accustomed to slow leisurely dining but this was too long. Starter was really nice but our lamb dish was inconsistent with some pieces quite tough. The rhubarb desert was a real let down. An £8 supplement for cheese seemed a bit excessive. We had to ask the sommelier to bring us the remaining wine in our bottle at the end of the meal. Overall, we were quite disappointed with the experience and would not return."

  • "We dined in the chef's room which is actually one of the restaurants wine cellars with just enough space for the table and surrounding bottles of wine - very cosy and gorgeous. The service was excellent and the staff all very friendly and accommodating. We opted for the a la carte menu and we all agreed that the stand out dish was the Lobster. This tiny bowl of 'lobster and lightly smoked crustacean medley' packed such a tasty punch - I could have had just this and would have been happy. From the lovely amuse bouche to start through to the selection of teas to finish, everything was presented with style and nothing disappointed. We all agreed that this was a meal to remember and will definitely be returning."

  • "love this place. food was impeccable. service was perfectly frosty. just how it should be! dress up, sit down, and shut up. there'll be truffles coming out of your ears for weeks."

  • "Gauthier is an elegant restaurant where every care is taken to welcome and serve. The food is superb and the Michelin men will return with more stars in the future. Faultless service and a good atmosphere (if only slightly reverential) A strong recommendation from us."

  • "Wonderful attention to detail. No rush to leave at end of delicious meal. Great for ladies that lunch. "

  • "We visited Gauthier Solo to celebrate my Mum's 60th birthday. Overall we were very impressed with the value for money of the £40 lunchtime deal (or £25 without wine pairing). As well as the 3 courses, there were lots of little extras in between courses. We were there for hours, but not in a bad way - the afternoon flowed well and was very relaxing. Food was exciting and in our opinion was of Michelin standard. So we would highly recommend this lunchtime package if you have time to spare to enjoy it."

  • "I took my parents to Gauthier and they were delighted with the food and the service. I love Gauthier for its peace and quiet and lovely food, and I was not disappointed. I sometimes find the service slightly slow. You can look around for a waiter, but generally they are charming."

  • "We had the 3 course set lunch with wine pairing for 40 pounds per person. The food and presentation was superb and the service most attentive."

  • "One of the best restaurant experiences I had in London so far (and that means a lot as I had the chance to dine at Petrus, Galvin La Chapelle, Maze....). The set lunch is excellent vlaue for the money, the service is freindly and experienced, the atmosphere loveley! A clear must and I will definitly come again!"

  • "My boyfriend and I went there for my birthday dinner. With 1 Michelin star and average 4.6 review score, I had a high expectation but was disappointed with many aspects. The reception said I booked 18.30 and were late for 20 mins. They can't give us a table until 20.30. But the time I booked was 18.45. I stated it was a birthday dinner when booking, they did not contact me for that either. The food was too salty. Much saltier than every meal I had in Paris. Not as good as other 1 Michelin star French restaurants I visited in Paris or Rome. The only bright spot was the Louis King XV. Waiters were polite, but the space was too tight. The couple next to us were constantly staring at us, which was very rude. Chair was uncomfortable either."

  • "There were administrative problems, in that the e-mail confirmation response system failed. When we arrived it took a long time to find our booking (even though telephone confirmation had taken place). On leaving, it took three attempts to process the credit card payment. Clearly there were IT issues that night. However, and more importantly :- it was a superb meal. The cooking was brilliant; the dishes were inventive and delicious. The sommelier was knowledgeable and helpful. The staff were attentive. There was no rush, no feeling that a later booking might be in the offing. We had selected the restaurant for a special meal - it lived up to expectations, and is thoroughly to be recommended."

  • "Excellent presentation and cooking skill. Everyone at the table enjoyed the food very much."

  • "Really great value given the high quality of the food. Previous comments have noted poor service but the service we received was very good - neither pretentious nor overly pushy. I would agree that the ambience is not the best and the view out of the window to a building site is not great but that's hardly the restaurant's fault."
    dined on 01/04/2014
  • "The most refined cooking in London. Knowledgeable, discreet but friendly staff. I can't wait to go again."
    dined on 07/03/2014
  • "Fantastic service by the team at Gauthier. The staff was extremely accommodating - one of our party was pregnant and they put forth a lot of effort to ensure she still enjoyed the experience. The sommelier presented some very interesting wines. Although we didn't love every single pairing, it really fun to try some unique things. The food was very good quality French fare and we would definitely return again soon."

  • "I've dined 3 times at Gauthier in the last 4 months and with good reason. Excellent attentive service, fantastic food and a lovely, unpretentious atmosphere. When I went with my parents and sister for Mother's Day, we informed them my Father is vegetarian in advance and everything was prepared and selected with that in mind- down to vegetarian rather than meat jus and vegetarian cheeses in the cheese course. Wonderful venue for romantics, parents or for business- anytime you want a quiet, excellent meal."

  • "Nice food well executed and presented by competent friendly staff in what must be one of the nicest environments in London, like eating at an old friends home."

  • "An excellent evening. Delicious food and a brilliant all round dining experience. Wonderful dining room and impeccable service - attentive but not overbearing. Will definitely go there again."

  • "I booked a table at Gauthier for my sister's birthday dinner and had a lovely evening. The staff were attentive, the food and wine both incredible, and the restaurant was perfect in every detail."
    dined on 24/03/2014
  • "Trying the lunch menu was good way to experience this restaurant considering how busy, and expensive it can be for dinner. Wine pairing was also available with the lunch menu. Food was very well presented. However taste wasn't really there for most of the dishes. Service was super attentive to the point my friend and I thought it was a bit annoying. Crossed off the list for me."
    dined on 13/03/2014
  • "I love this restaurant. The food is interesting and delicious. The service is faultless. The space is a beautiful Georgian house in Soho. But.... What makes this so lovely is the staff who bring all the bits together to make it such a special experience. Do ask the sommelier to recommend wines by the glass if you don't know what you want. I always do, it's fun and you do get to experience different and interesting wines. If you are on a bit of a budget the deluxe lunch is brilliant value. Jk"

  • "Delightful staff and very high standard of cooking. Lovely venue too!"

  • "Our Spanish friends were royally treated by the waiter who spoke very good Spanish and translated the entire (written in English) menus for them...thus saving my blushes as my restaurant Spanish leaves something to be desired. Food, service, ambience etc. were all fantastic...but the attention shown by our waiter was the 'icing on the cake'. This restaurant has a superb offering in every sense."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "The foie gras starter was cooked just right, and the trout main course had such delicate flavours. My friend had the slow-cooked ox-cheek as the main course, and found it so tender that it could melt in the mouth. This, plus the attentive but not intrusive service, means I will be going back again soon, with more friends!"

  • "Top class food and wine, good sommelier. But service a bit slow and particularly in a) offering and b) providing pre-prandial drinks"
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "Had the lunch tasting menu. Bread very good, complimentary water, setting was very nice. Tables were too close together, they need to lose 2 covers to make the seating less tight. Price- spent £120 for lunch with a glass of champagne and wine each + one soft drink. We also don't need an explanation of each dish- we did order it in the first place! Finally the food itself is very nicely presented but doesn't live up in it's execution- there was some sand in the scallop dish (no I didn't complain- I'm English), for both of us the fresh truffles completely overwhelmed the sole, and the lamb (which we like pink) was undercooked- it can be pink and juicy without being raw and chewy. For the money you can lunch at Le Gavroche (if you can get in!)"
    dined on 18/03/2014
  • "This is a lovely special occasion venue. Excellent service by a young and well trained team. Choice on a la carte was varied and well balanced - something to suit every taste. One or two of the dishes were a little on the bland as opposed to delicate side."
    dined on 18/03/2014
  • "We booked a dinner as it was my birthday and was sat on the ground floor, it was a beautiful townhouse, very small and elegant and cosy. We opted for the 5 course meal and it was very hard to choose from the menu as most was to my taste. Each course was beautifully presented but it was very rich. The only thing was as the evening progressed it got very hot and the air con was not on. Overall I was very impressed and will come back. It is expensive hence the 3 star for value."
    dined on 12/03/2014
  • "This Is an intimate restaurant in the heart of theatre land. It is a little gem with beautiful food and attentive service from friendly staff. You can easily pay twice the price for grossly inferior food. The menu combinations including wine or juices or tea and infusions provide an option to suit every taste and pocket. Gauthier is extremely civilised, a haven where you can enjoy slow food served at a perfect pace. We will return."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "Alexis chef/ patron does a great job in providing on trend, beautifully cooked and presented uncomplicated perfect food at sensible money. I have always loved the little town house the restaurant sits in which is quaint and feels like you are eating in your own dining room at home, we eat on the first floor which is delightful. Wine service was slow, we kept looking for our bottle, but overall I would highly recommend the restaurant and coming from a previous Michelin star chef (when I was cooking in the 90's) I feel that Alexis has this spot on... Well done Chef!"

  • "This is the second time I have eaten here and have already booked again. It was the first time my partner has fined here and am so glad he liked it. We had the wine pairings with our lunch and the choices were superb and definitely enhanced our meal. What I like about this place is all the extras you get - canapés, mous bouche and petit fours. Can't wait to go again!"
