Diner Reviews
  • "The innovation and variety of the cooking at Gauthier combine to make dishes that are an exquisite combination of flavour and presentation. The wine list is carefully selected and very varied in terms of source and price. There is something there for everybody. The service is polite, friendly and knowledgeable. It is a beautiful, peaceful place in the heart of hectic SoHo to enjoy some of the very best food in Britain."

  • "Had an impromptu exam results celebration dinner at Gauthier on Saturday. Booked it on the day so think we were lucky with a cancellation. Have been many times to Gauthier and it never disappoints. The food and service were excellent as usual - we (four) went for the tasting menu and the fois gras starter was divine. Only small criticism was one of the cheeses was not to everyone's liking - it would be better if you could select the two cheeses you want for this course. Otherwise exceptional."

  • "Had the Deluxe lunch menu. Very good value for the quality of the food. Will return soon for the a la carte."

  • "Champagne set lunch with lots of extra courses £40 bargin. The meal consisted of 3 courses with an amuse bouche, pre starter and pre desert plus coffee and petit fours. A glass of Champagne to start and 2 glasses of wine with the lunch."

  • "we hadn't' been to Gauthier for a couple of years but it was as good as we remembered. French cuisine and french waiting staff and w warm welcome with unobtrusive but one the ball service. As it was a special birthday we went for the lunch time tasting menu and it was absolutely delicious. No problem when one of our party wanted an alternative to the foie gras starter. And Damien the wine waiter was friendly and helpful as always. This is an absolute delight of a restaurant to meet old friends, because apart from the lovely food the ambience is quiet and relaxed. (Spoiled somewhat at lunchtime at the moment by noise of building refurbishment work across the street...for which the maitre d' was very apologetic.)"

  • "the rock'n'roll gents seemed like an outdated 90s nightclub loo, dark, with loud music and a chain attached cologne to prevent it from being stolen."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "Superb in every respect: good, service, atmosphere. And so many extra dishes/courses/treats complementary... Between the two of us we ordered 7 courses and received 18! Book it now."

  • "Possibly one of London's best resaurants, head and shoulders above Ducass, with creative beautiful food that is a delight on the palate, attentive staff - strongly recommend for fine dining"
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "Usual high quality menu let down by the underwhelming peach dessert and disjointed service (not sure if they had to few staff on) - no offer of bread at all - had to ask for it. The bread tray was half empty and not replenished - and there was no offer of further bread. Others in party had no problems. Risotto up to usual standard."

  • "Wonderful dinner with excellent food and menu choices. For the quality very reasonably priced. Table slightly too close for an intimate dinner for two but will certainly return. Service was professional and welcoming."

  • "Great fine modern French cuisine, one of the only places in town offering full vegetarian tasting menu with unique and delicious dishes The only thing is even though we wrote and confirmed a post theatre reservation time of 10pm, and were promised in writing that a full tasting menu would still be available, when we arrived we were told the opposite, and apparently the restaurant can not accommodate diners at that time for a tasting menu; the service was rushed and suffered miscommunication. I would strongly recommend avoiding late dinner time and arriving early enough to let the stuff accommodate you properly"

  • "Whilst it seems a good idea to allow you to mix and match how many and what dishes you want to eat, having to make the decision upfront makes for a difficult experience the further you get into the meal, not knowing whether the courses are all entree sized or differ depending on where you chose from the menu. The sommelier was fantastic but the other front of house team seemed either pre-occupied or more interested in themselves rather than the guests. Overall the food was fairly good but not outstanding"

  • "Our third trip to Gautier for a birthday celebration and a great evening was had as before. We had the tasting menu plus matched wines which was exceptional. The truffle risotto is one of the best I can remember. On the pricey side on par with Le Gavroche but easier to book and well worth it for a special occasion"

  • "We went to the Gaulthier for our first date and it was great. The first was first class and the selection available amazing. The service was friendly and attentive. The ambience worked well for a first date: intimate, sophisticated. Highly recommended."

  • "In an old house, the staff make you feel at home as soon as you arrive. The food is quite exceptional and each course of the eight course tasting menu was terrific. There is unusually a vegetable based version so carnipbobes should be very happy! Wine is a little on the expensive side but there is an excellent choice. Altogether a wonderful choice for a special evening."

  • "Our second time at Gauthier, and we had another very nice meal. The table was slightly cramped into a corner (on the first floor), but food and service were again outstanding. Especially the desserts (strawberry millefeuille and abricot choux) were exquisite. The value is amazing - a three course dinner for £40 per person, and that includes an amuse, pre-dessert, and mignardises. They forgot to bill our two glasses of champagne, and when we alerted them to that, waved them altogether (even though we would have been perfectly happy to pay). I have no idea how they can make money given the amount of staff they have....hopefully, they will get their Michelin star back and be around for a while longer!"

  • "Gauthier certainly lived up to the reviews on Opentable. We went this weekend which also happened to be party week in Soho. The whole of the area was mayhem then we walked into the restaurant which was an oasis of calm. The service was attentive but not obtrusive, the food was as good as I have eaten anywhere and the lamb which one of my party had was possibly the best I've ever eaten. Wine list was superb as you would expect from a rstaurant of this standard. I'd mentioned on booking that it was my daughter's birthday and the restaurant gave her a special dessert with a candle which was a lovely touch. After a wonderful meal we were then refreshed and ready to go and party. A brilliant evening"

  • "Booking at this lovely restaurant was quite easy online. The night that Gay Pride was having a boisterous street party did not affect the quiet atmosphere or ambiance of the restaurant once we had fought our way inside! We were shown to a very private table and throughout, our experience was one of attentive but not intrusive service by the staff. Each course came with a brief explanation and were impeccable works of culinary art. The combinations of choice on the menu delivered a heady balance of flavours. The presentation and the perfect timing of the delivery made our whole dining experience an absolute delight. The staff throughout, demonstrated great teamwork and a great standard of courtesy. Thank you"

  • "Nicely cooked Classic French food with out the heaviness. There is a lightness of touch about the dishes but they have plenty of flavour."

  • "We had the tasting menu and it was innovative and of high quality. The signature chocolate dessert is probably the most delicious thing I've ever eaten."

  • "We were a party of three and took the tasting menu with matching wines. I rarely if ever write reviews but this was such a great experience. Francois explained every course with passion and enthusiasm. Marco the sommelier introduced the wines, again passionate and some truly outstanding and imaginative matches. Amari completed the team and could not have been more helpful attending to our every need with professionalism and good humour. We were all bowled over by the entire experience. The food was truly fantastic and the charming staff made it a memorable evening. Earlier in the week we took the tasting menu at a two star michelin french restaurant in Mayfair which was OK. Gauthier was outstanding in every respect - game, set and match."

  • "Why, in most 'fine dining' restaurants, must there be very little ambience? I understand that some people don't like background music but in my opinion well chosen music can enhance the experience. Otherwise you can hear what everybody else has to say. Apart from that the restaurant has friendly staff. not too sure about their 'reaching over one person to give a plate of food to the person sitting next to you' habit. food is mainly good although some of it could have had more taste, mainly my cherry dessert. The potato gnocci tasted slightly undercooked and fried potatoes might have been improved with a change of oil."

  • "Celebrated my 23rd birthday with my close friends on 16th June. I made a booking via opentable but it doesn't go through for some reason. However, host was kind enough to find us a table on such a short notice. Lobster was very nice.. I would recommend this dish. Food was good (7/10). What made my night memorable was the outstanding service, birthday dessert and I received Gauthier Vegetronic cookbook as my BD present. Would definitely recommend this place to friends and family. PS. Really love this book ;) Cheers"

  • "Slightly disappointing. We were tucked into a corner in the upstairs room which was somewhat subdued.Great for conversation but not very appealing. It was early evening Monday -so maybe a quiet time. The food was very good but not fantastic.Service friendly and attentive. The wine list is on the expensive side. Overall not a value meal. Perhaps taking the taster menu would provide a more exciting taste experience."

  • "I dined with my husband and two friends and we all ate the 7 course meat & fish tasting menu. The food was exceptional - beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Nothing too creative or innovative. Simply perfectly cooked, utterly wonderful dishes. 2 of us paired our meal with wines - all were clearly introduced and well matched - and 2 of us chose to have the tea pairing. This is a great option for those who do not drink or cannot manage the full tasting selection of wines. It was also quite exciting for being so different. Service was spot on - attentive without being intrusive, friendly without being familiar. The dining room was comfortable and relaxing. I thoroughly recommend Gaulthier to anyone who enjoys fine dining."

  • "We took good friends for lunch on Saturday 14th June - we all had the six course taster lunch with paired wines, & everything was perfect - the food, the wine, the service - all faultless. A big thank you to all the team!!! Bob & Nicky Cheetham"

  • "Based on very good Open Table ratings, I booked the Gauthier for a 40th anniversary meal. We chose the a la carte menu, with the intention of trying 4 courses, however we were very satisfied after a couple of amuses bouche followed by three courses. Food quality was excellent. The ambience however was a touch formal and lacking in warmth, which was a pity, given the efforts in the Kitchen."

  • "This was my fourth or fifth visit and the restaurant maintains its very high standards all round. Value too at lunchtime."

  • "I took a friend to Gautier who had never been there before. She was absolutely delighted by the whole experience - the pleasant helpful staff, the exquisite food, the lovely wines and the really great value for money. Neither of us usually eat dessert, but we did this time. Her's was described as orgasmic!"

  • "I love going to Gauthier Soho - it is always a joy. I know that I don't have to worry about anything - except the difficult job of choosing what to eat! The wine waiter offered us a Tokay to go with our varied main courses - and it was an excellent choice- and at a reasonable price. We will certainly be going back again - but want to try Tartufo at some point."

  • "Outstanding service from reception to table, then throughout, but always unobtrusive. A wide choice of menus, perfectly cooked, fresh imaginative cuisine. Beautifully furnished, a lovely quiet ambience. Expert advice from the knowledgeable sommelier enhanced the experience. "

  • "Gaulthier is a rare treat. A fine dining experience in a beautiful converted Soho town house that hits all the beats of top end French dining experience but somehow manages to be welcoming, friendly and, dare I say it, fun. Lunch here is terrifica and terrific value but this was my first dinner visit and we splashed out on the tasting menu. 7 courses without a false note - exquisite. From yielding fragrant asparagus through unctuous risotto to mouthwatering halibut. We rolled out several hours later, with macaroons grasped tightly and silly grins from ear to ear. "

  • "Yet another superb long leisurely lunch at Gauthier. We discovered Gauthier over a year ago and have been back several times since. Everything is consistently perfect from the warm welcome on arrival, the service, the presentation, the food and the wines. The lunch menu Deluxe which includes wines matching is fantastic and makes even a catch up with family or friends over lunch feel like a special occasion! Excellent!. "
