A word from Heaton, Butler & Bayne
Q: Why Heaton Butler and Bayne? That’s quite a mouthful to say.
A: Three guys, stern and bearded, that went into business here back in the 1850s designing and manufacturing stained glass. We’re not stern and we don’t do stained glass, just really great food, good wine and awesome cocktails.

Q: Great food, huh? Talk to me. Whats the menu like?
A: The only thing constant is change, and so our menus change a bit almost every day. We like to keep things short and simple, and try not to over complicate things.

Q: And the important question, is there a bar?
A: Indeed! We’ve got a counter space on the ground floor that you can eat, drink, and be merry at. Also, please stand by as we will be opening a secret(ish) cocktail bar downstairs – The Office – which will be a throwback to the 1960’s, when men were gentlemen, and women could flirt with just a raised eyebrow.

The menu looked nice and we had high hopes but the experience was disappointing. Poor choice of beer, slow service and very bad chips. The steak was OK but pretty small and not rare. On the plus side the staff were very friendly and the 50% off food is a good deal.

The food was great, the service was good, special message to the manager on the day, really done a great job. My only comments is the new design, we definitely prefer the old design "The Forge" the new décor makes the restaurant looks like a cafe, shame on that. Saying that, the food was good, specially the rib-eye and the desert.

Four of us met at Heaton, Butler & Bayne for an early Saturday evening dinner. The food was very good indeed across the board and the service was attentative without being in the least obtrusive. Highly recommended.

booked this restaurant on the strength of the reviews on top table but sadly have to say my experience was totally different .starter of squid and char grilled veg was spoiled by a lot of rocket and drowned with a commercial tasting dressing. only one other table occupied but we still waited about 20 mins for the rib eye steak .and thrice cooked fries.. my rare order was medium and my friend who ordered well done received what seemed to be an overdone piece of minute steak..no apology for the wait or why only one of us got the rib eye...and fries were floppy and did not seem freshly cooked ..have mailed the restaurant re the poor food buts so far have not had any response, ,even with the 50% offer would not return...

Good location for convenience; delicious and non-pretentious wholesome food. A little gem serving Coventry Garden and Holborn so my guess it would be great for pre/post theatre though I had a business lunch there. Though there were only 3 tables when we dined, there was only one personnel waiting on the table, making the service a tad slow. Given the half-price deal offered through top table, overall experience not bad at all.

A short walk from the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden brings you to the cool and calm haven of Heaton, Butler and Bayne. Both food and service were excellent. The restaurant was quiet enough to have a work discussion over an informal meal. We were given a spectuacular discount on our bill (which we weren't expecting). As a result, we had a three course dinner for three with wine for less than £90 including tip! Trust me, that's rather good for central London. Thank you very much, HBB! I'd definitely come again.

We had booked the restaurant as we were catching up with friends over from the US. We arrived early and had a drink in the bar - with an interesting bottle of stout and delicious olives from Sicily! All of our meals were good and well served- there was plenty of choice for everyone and the staff were very helpful - particularly with one of our group who has complex food allergies. The restaurant was not hugely busy so was perfect for us to catch up with each other.I would certainly go again - the bar snacks looked interesting too.It was also quite cool inside compared to the heatwave outside - another distinct advantage!

It is surprisingly hard to find a good meal in Covent Garden--the place is full of chain restaurants heaving with tourists and eye-catching but often hit-and-miss special offers. Heaton, Butler and Bayne is a peaceful change from all that. The food is distinctive, just as it should be, the wine excellent (though it would be nice if more were available in 500ml carafes--you feel as though you are being nudged to trade up from small glass to bottle). It just has a feeling of care being taken, which is very rare in the area. The dining room is cool, light and pleasant and the service friendly.

Location & Ambience: located on a side street from a major intersection in the Covent Garden area, the restaurant (which I shall shorten to "HBB") had a spacious dining area furnished in a definite Scandinavian style - think clean lines and wood, with tables set spaciously apart, and some of the cleanest and most spacious toilets you'll find in the area. Food & Service: had the squid salad starter (only concern: the grilled veg was a bit too salty), and the salmon main (which was absolutely great - portion looks small but was actually quite filling!). Service was EXCELLENT - the manager and wait staff were friendly and courteous, and always kept the table water filled - you walk away feeling like they actually cared about you.

Had a pre-theatre dinner in Heaton, Butler and Payne and the food was delicious and great value at 50% off. We dined on steak and salmon (both very good) and treated ourselves to dessert. The service was attentive and the staff very friendly, but I would say the only thing that let down the meal were the seats. These are not the most comfortable and we all agreed that we felt like we were sat on children's chairs! I would go back, but I have to say I prefer the premises as it was before - The Forge!

We were on the 50% deal which is extremely good value. We arrived at 6pm and the restaurant was empty and we left for the theatre at 7.20pm and only another couple of people were eating which does not give much ambience. The food was excellent and well presented. Cannot understand why so quiet whereas all the restaurants around were full.

This restaurant In the heart of Covent Garden is good for pre and post theatre and the opera. and especially with the 50% off Toptable discounts, it is good value. The first time I went it was very quick service. However this time it took a long time for the main course to arrive after the starters, so that was a bit of a drawback. Hope this is not the usual case.

I had a rib eye steak for my main and I think it's probably amongst one of the best steaks I've ever had - cooked to perfection and so juicy. In fact, I think my steak was better than the one I had at the highly rated steak restaurant Hawkswmoor. My partner had whiting with gnocchi for a main, which was also delicious. We don't usually have desserts but were tempted into trying some. The Daim bar frozen cake was very good. My only minor disappointment was my starter. I had squid with chargrilled veg. The veg were great but there was very little squid! The chairs aren't that comfortable - you can't really lean back and slump into your chair. The chairs promote more of a 'lean forwards into the conversation' kind of vibe.

My boyfriend and I went for dinner at HBB using the 50% offer from toptable. The restaurant is a two minute stroll away from Leicester Square/ Covent Garden, situated on a quiet(ish) side street in a really beautiful building. It is modern inside but very stylish with a lovely ambiance. The waiting staff were delightful, very attentive and eager to answer all our questions. The food was outstanding. Fresh and tasty. I highly recommend the sabayon for desert. The best thing I have tasted for a while! Using the 50% deal made the whole experience incredible value. Highly recommended!

We dined on Sunday evening. Only one other table occupied on arrival and only three more by 8.00 or so. Not much atmosphere therefore and not helped by the starkness of the decoration. The salmon mousse starter was fine if a little soft and this was followed by roast beef, the roast potatoes, beans and Yorkshire puddings were good but the meat disappointing. It was a rib eye roast which whilst tender lacked the flavour you get when you fry an individual steak. The service however was good. Overall it feels like a restaurant that hasn't found its identity - not a destination restaurant for a special evening but not really a regular drop in for all those that packed Covent Garden that evening.

Had lunch here last Sunday. The food was good, but not outstanding. Had warm duck egg, artichoke & asparagus for starter. As I'm pregnant I asked for the egg to be replaced with something else (and if not possible to be left out, while upping the other components). The chef just left out the egg (without adding anything) so I ended up with a very small starter. For main I had warm smoked salmon with green beans and roast potatoes on the side. Fish was tasty and potatoes were great. Dessert was a pineapple sundae with lime cream. It sounded nicer than it was. At least half of it was cream (way too much- and not enough pineapple). Overall, it's good value with the 50% TT offer but would be over-priced without it for the quality of the food.

There are a lot of places to eat in Covent Garden, some of which I like very much. But this is the first I have been to in years that doesn't feel like a restaurant in Covent Garden: it's relaxed and doesn't cut corners. It still provides free bread and a decent wine list, even at the lower end (divided into Old and New World, so everyone knows where they are), two things that are getting scarce. The food is very good and carefully prepared and presented. Staff were scrupulous about asking whether we were pre-theatre and left us time to spare although we were half an hour late--but nothing arrived suspiciously quickly. Really good espresso, too. One criticism: the set menus are very restricted: three options rather than two are more normal.

It was quiet when we went at 1730, giving the perfect environment to catch up with a friend I'd not seen for a year. It got busier as we were leaving around 1930 with larger groups arriving. The staff were attentive & friendly without being pushy. The waitress knew about the menu and was glad to hear from a Scotsman how to say "Loch Duart" correctly. For food we both chose the salmon which was beautiful followed by desserts using the TT 50% off food offer which meant it was cheaper to have a dessert - we didn't argue with that. The selection of beers was limited but those on offer were local from small breweries so fitted the character of the location well. Great environment, staff & food in central London for £20/head, I'll go back.

We chose this restaurant because we are researching the decorative glass work of Heaton Butler and Bayne, who made stained glass windows in the second half of the 19th century. The building looked perfect based on brochures we had seen. The welcome was good and the food delicious. We like restaurants that give you interesting bread as you read the menu. Service was excellent. There were very few in the restaurant, we had booked a late lunch. In the current vogue there were no soft furnishings, tablecloths or carpets so we would expect it to be very noisy if it was full. A shame. It was also disappointing for us that there were no examples of HBB glass on show!
