  • "Another exceptional Sunday lunch at Hix in Clerkenwell. Truly delicious food and amazing service from start to finish. The best Sunday lunch in the country!"

  • "Excellent restaurant, especially if you like oysters. I had as a main course, the first grouse of the season (visited on 12th) which was cooked to perfection. Informal, relaxed atmosphere, always busy, very friendly and attentive staff and my first choice when in the Farringdon area."

  • "This is the best place in London, food is faultless, service is perfect, ambience is top. Their standards do not fall."

  • "We went with family for an early Tuesday evening dinner. The Service was very good. Everyone is very knowlegdable of the menu and are very helpful. Also made the birthday boy very special! The menu starters are solid and a nice selection of 3 types of oysters. Followed-up by big cuts of excellent meat, and backed up by some very good fish dishes. Desserts are a little disappionting after such fine fare, but to be honest everyone was very full from the meat-feast so it didn't rock any boat! If you like oysters and chops of meat....book now!"

  • "We have dined at Hix &Chophouse on a fairly regular basis since it opened. We find it consistently excellent! Sunday lunch is a great favourite of ours.- live jazz, "proper food". Staff are always helpful and friendly, attentive but not intrusive. Great atmosphere with the live music and the doors opened ( weather permitting). We have also really enjoyed meals sitting at the bar as "walk ins" when tables unavailable. I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed. The food is very very good,"

  • "My friend Anna and I went for dinner at Hix on Friday after work. I'd read that the hangar steak was delicious and tender so I'd decided I was having that before we arrived! I was shocked to see that the fillet was £34 and that is without sides (small portion of chips: £4.50). The bearnaise was delicious, the bone marrow that accompanied the steak was the worst part for me, I don't understand the appeal of it. I had smoked salmon to start which was gone in seconds & nothing to write home about and at £14.50 I felt disappointed. Anna had sand eels which were like fat whitebait and there seemed to be loads of them where my starter was tiny. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Not worth the money or perhaps I don't get paid enough!"

  • "This was my first time at hix chop house. The food and wine were both of a good quality, and the service was impeccable, but the prices are pretty extortionate. I'll be limiting my visits to business lunches for that reason."

  • "Reliable for work lunches. Tables a bit small and close together, but a good british menu and attentive service"

  • "I ave many favourite steak houses, and they are legion in London, but Hix is different the Barnsley Chop, the veal or pork all are great standard, and the lindisfarn oysters superb, also its not ridiculously expensive, with great caraf's of wine"

  • "I like the Hix Oyster and Chophouse, I like taking friends and watching their eyes light up as the cuts board is presented. I love their shock at the pork crackling snacks crunching in their mouths. Be prepared to spend money here, the fear of the unknown on the menu will have you splitting dishes with friends so as not to be guilty of missing out. Friendly, responsive staff who want to talk to you about the food and drink they peddle are the cherry on top."

  • "Had an amazing meal at Hix. Me and my girlfriend both had the hanger steak which was cooked to perfection. The sides of mashed potatoes and carrots we ordered were creamy and buttery respectively. We paired our main with a carafe of the wonderful Malbec which was delicious. Desserts consisted of the gooseberry pie and the Eton mess. The pie was accompanied with vanilla custard which contrasted well with the tartness of the gooseberries. The Eton mess was a let down for us. Although tasty, it was a very restrained portion. The dish was little more than a couple of mouthfuls, however, it was tasty though. We went for a late lunch and the restaurant was full of business people on the lunch. The decor is not to my taste. Very bland and dull."

  • "An excellent menu, fine choices of meat cuts and the oysters are always delicious here. The service as usual was first class."

  • "I dined at Hix Chop House for my husband's birthday and we couldn't have enjoyed our meal more, my husband ate oysters which he mentioned were up there with the best he'd come across, while I opted for their smoked salmon, which was again amazing (according to the staff they smoke it on the roof of Selfridges and it's Mr Hix's own recipe. Nice! Our maincourses were the star of the show though, I opted for their grilled plaice which was light and summery and just what I was feeling like! While my man being the carnivore that he is, went for the rib steak, which he said again was up there with the best and most succulent piece of meat he'd come across. Service was attentive yet not too intrusive and the staff were very knowledgable. Go there!"

  • "Does what it says on the tin extremely well. Lovely service."

  • "We went to Hix for a celebration and had a great experience in the small informal dining room. The attentive, friendly, but not intrusive, service was pitched just right. The food and wine choice was wide but not overwhelming and the 'nibbles' choice was great (the pork scratching and rhubarb compote is a must). Best oysters we've ever had and particularly good with the Hix ale. A nice touch was being shown & talked through at the table the cuts of meat available that delivered all that was promised..The nibbles were plenty for us not to want a starter but had pud -the chocolate mousse was devine. It wasn't cheap (over £80 each inc. wine and a couple of drinks) but we felt we had very good value for money and will certainly be going back."

  • "Really good food in a really cool, close location to the station"

  • "Went to this restaurant again having not been for a couple of years. Does what it says on the tin! Started with oysters and their house beer - very good. Then a really outstanding steak, and excellent service. Too full after all that to try dessert!"
    dined on 14/06/2014
  • "Although not thrilled with the location we had high hopes of an enjoyable, good quality dinner at HIX. One of three meals was good but the others were appalling. For a restaurant that specialises in fish to send out uncleaned crayfish is one thing. But to say that crayfish with FULL digestive tracts are suitable to eat (each one on the plate was filthy) and expect the customer to remove it with their knife and fork was not good. this was sent back and the RETURNED as it was apparently acceptable... I am not convinced 'chef' or whoever was asked knew what they were talking about!! It put us all off our meals and had to be sent back again and swapped to a chewy lobster dish. was not well after this meal. Tarnishing the Mark HIX name."

  • "Good menu, good service, excellent food, enjoyable jazz accompaniment. "

  • "Went there for an early dinner before the boxing and we had the place to ourselves. The food and the staff couldn't have been nicer, the place is really chilled out and the staff is very attentive."
    dined on 31/05/2014
  • "I took my father for lunch as a treat for us both. It was lovely to be in great company and the service was exemplary. Just when did steak inflate to 73 quid for two? And that's before ordering sides! I love Hix though having been several times to the one in Mayfair attached to Browns Hotel. Somehow it does smart without being stuffy. And I like the quirky wall art."
    dined on 29/05/2014
  • "Chose this place as it was near the Barbican where we had been to the theatre. Sunday afternoon at 5pm. It was excellent food - the Sunday jazz had finished but we liked the quietness and the food was inventive and good value - and for foodies who appreciate British cooking and produce. My lobster salad was superb"
    dined on 18/05/2014
  • "I've lost my voice and my guests didn't speak English, so the staff immediately found someone who speaks German to help my guests to chose their food. That was really very nice of them and we very much appreciated it."
    dined on 17/05/2014
  • "Ridiculously overpriced for very average steaks. Oysters were fresh at least but that was about the only good thing."
    dined on 15/05/2014
  • "A long business lunch with a good friend turned out to be a very relaxing and well-served experience. Some interesting seasonal asparagus variations to start: one with cuttle-fish, the other with lamb's sweetbreads: spot on. A lovely veal chop to follow and the other an interesting fillet steak on the bone. perfectly cooked and well-sourced ingredients. Good wines from the Languedoc and the Lebanon - the latter particularly good. Wine mark-ups a tad high and side dish additions make the overall cost of the meal at the luxury end. However, charming and efficient service and we were happily left to stay for over three hours in spite of the theoretical 2 hour limit. Most enjoyable and relaxing and to be repeated "

  • "Hix Oyster and Chophouse excels in terms of ambience, service and food - and you can reverse the order, if you prefer, because they are all prime factors that lead me to return. The care and attention throughout could not have been better. "
    dined on 08/05/2014
  • "Had a really good night. The service was helpful & friendly & the rib eye for two was very tasty. Always disappointed though when sides arrive & there are 3 portions (croquettes in this instance) to share between the two of us. That aside, it was an enjoyable night..."

  • "We enjoyed an excellent meal. The fish was fabulous, and the service excellent. We have eaten here a number of times now and have always found the standard of the food served to be of the highest quality. "

  • "I had dinner at Hix on a Sunday evening. We were greeted promptly and seated near the back of the restaurant. It was about 1/3 full (7pm) and continued to fill near capacity by 8pm. We ordered goat dumplings, watercress soup, steak, beef and oyster pie, potatoes and salad. All tasted great and were well-presented, but our favorite was the goat dumpling starter. Our only complaint was the lack of staff, which resulted in slow, uneven service. One bartender, waitress, host, and server for 20+ tables. Our waitress was friendly, but stretched too thin, as were the others. We considered dessert, but didn't want to stay longer. When we left, no one was at the door to say good-bye. Better service would have made this a great experience."

  • "Hix Oyster & Chophouse is tucked away in a Farringdon side street and is a real gem. It's a mix of high end cuisine wihtout ever feeling stuffy or staid. The ambiance is balanced between never being too loud to hear your companions think nor too quiet to be comfortable. The nationally sourced ingredients were a nice touch and the meat was to die for."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "A great menu overall, but the steak stands out as the star of the menu (i.e. the porterhouse). Excellent wine menu as well, with some reasonable bottles at good prices."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Without a doubt, the biggest, meatiest, tastiest Oysters my partner and I have ever eaten. The steak was great, but the Oyster blew us away. If Oysters are your thing, try this place!"
    dined on 04/04/2014
  • "While we're happy to pay for good food, I am not sure this was good value. The look and feel is good, the decription of the food enticing, but apart for my Heaven & Earth, there wasn't anything that made us sit up and take notice. Shame especially at the price."
    dined on 04/04/2014
  • "I've dined here many times without problem, but this Friday's meal/service was very disappointing. Meals took way too long to come out. Whilst the offering of some complimentary salmon was a nice gesture, my "medium" fillet (at £36!) came out overdone and cold. Having originally told us that one of our orders was "overdone" and was being re-done, I can't help feeling they thought "what the hell, let's serve it and see". Despite being a busy Friday, this shouldn't be a strain on such an established business. So, they dropped the ball in my view and, at their price point, I might struggle to recommend the place without warning of a potential repeat of this poor experience."

  • "I had a pleasant evening at Hix restaurant, the food was delicious, and the service attentive and friendly, what a gem. Will definitely go back."

  • "Must of gone on a bad day but the mains were served before the starters and when it came to the mains they were server cold...not very good for the amount you pay.."

  • "Took my wife & baby for a Mother's Day treat. The restaurant is quite tight on space but they were able to accommodate our buggy. Straight away my wife got a free glass of champagne as a Mothers Day surprise, and every mother got the same treatment. The food was sublime, I had Heaven & Earth (black pudding on apple base with chicken sauce) & lamb chop, my wife had asparagus & pheasant egg salad, and sea bass. For dessert we shared the rhubarb tart - one of the best desserts I've ever had and would go back for that alone. All the food was really amazing, in 13 years living in London this was one of the best meals I've had. Service was friendly and exact. The food arrived promptly. Live jazz (piano & bass) provided a lovely ambience.10/10"

  • "Excellent oysters and chops. Simple food, cooked superbly. Great to see them meats before choosing from the menu. Great service too. Highly recommended."

  • "Great food, set menu had good range of choice and excellent value. We ate at 5pm, very quiet (which is unusual in places like this, I am partially deaf so being able to partake in conversation was very enjoyable) and staff were very attentive. Planning our next trip to try the impressive steaks they have."
