    On the last Friday of every month we have live music courtesy of our resident musician Huw Price. Huw Price is a London-based guitarist and singer. He has worked as a resident musician in top venues in London, plus countless weddings, private parties, and fashion shows; corporate functions for blue-chip companies like Audi, Eversheds and Microsoft, and private art exhibitions for well-known artists such as Banksy. He plays both his own compositions and a wide range of Latin jazz and soul classics.

A word from Hix Oyster & Chophouse
Hix Oyster & Chop House is situated a stones throw from the Barbican theatre and Smithfield Market, London’s historic meat market. The wooden floors, marble oyster bar, tiled walls & linen tablecloths go towards creating an elegant yet unfussy dining room. The menu reflects Mark Hix’s signature British style with seasonal, frequently-changing dishes featuring oysters from around the British Isles, and a selection of meat and steak on the bone. A set menu from just £19.50 for 2 courses is available every lunchtime, pre and post theatre.
Kids also eat free from the kids menu, when dining with an adult, 12-6pm Monday –Friday and Sundays. Join us also for live jazz on Sunday between 1-4pm and enjoy our 3 course Sunday Roast for just £27.95!
Visit the Chop House any Monday night and pay no corkage when you bring your own wine.

  • "I like the Hix Oyster and Chophouse, I like taking friends and watching their eyes light up as the cuts board is presented. I love their shock at the pork crackling snacks crunching in their mouths. Be prepared to spend money here, the fear of the unknown on the menu will have you splitting dishes with friends so as not to be guilty of missing out. Friendly, responsive staff who want to talk to you about the food and drink they peddle are the cherry on top."

  • "Had an amazing meal at Hix. Me and my girlfriend both had the hanger steak which was cooked to perfection. The sides of mashed potatoes and carrots we ordered were creamy and buttery respectively. We paired our main with a carafe of the wonderful Malbec which was delicious. Desserts consisted of the gooseberry pie and the Eton mess. The pie was accompanied with vanilla custard which contrasted well with the tartness of the gooseberries. The Eton mess was a let down for us. Although tasty, it was a very restrained portion. The dish was little more than a couple of mouthfuls, however, it was tasty though. We went for a late lunch and the restaurant was full of business people on the lunch. The decor is not to my taste. Very bland and dull."

  • "I dined at Hix Chop House for my husband's birthday and we couldn't have enjoyed our meal more, my husband ate oysters which he mentioned were up there with the best he'd come across, while I opted for their smoked salmon, which was again amazing (according to the staff they smoke it on the roof of Selfridges and it's Mr Hix's own recipe. Nice! Our maincourses were the star of the show though, I opted for their grilled plaice which was light and summery and just what I was feeling like! While my man being the carnivore that he is, went for the rib steak, which he said again was up there with the best and most succulent piece of meat he'd come across. Service was attentive yet not too intrusive and the staff were very knowledgable. Go there!"

  • "We went to Hix for a celebration and had a great experience in the small informal dining room. The attentive, friendly, but not intrusive, service was pitched just right. The food and wine choice was wide but not overwhelming and the 'nibbles' choice was great (the pork scratching and rhubarb compote is a must). Best oysters we've ever had and particularly good with the Hix ale. A nice touch was being shown & talked through at the table the cuts of meat available that delivered all that was promised..The nibbles were plenty for us not to want a starter but had pud -the chocolate mousse was devine. It wasn't cheap (over £80 each inc. wine and a couple of drinks) but we felt we had very good value for money and will certainly be going back."

  • "Although not thrilled with the location we had high hopes of an enjoyable, good quality dinner at HIX. One of three meals was good but the others were appalling. For a restaurant that specialises in fish to send out uncleaned crayfish is one thing. But to say that crayfish with FULL digestive tracts are suitable to eat (each one on the plate was filthy) and expect the customer to remove it with their knife and fork was not good. this was sent back and the RETURNED as it was apparently acceptable... I am not convinced 'chef' or whoever was asked knew what they were talking about!! It put us all off our meals and had to be sent back again and swapped to a chewy lobster dish. was not well after this meal. Tarnishing the Mark HIX name."

And that's before ordering sides! I love Hix though having been several times to the one in Mayfair attached to Browns Hotel. Somehow it does smart without being stuffy.   • "A long business lunch with a good friend turned out to be a very relaxing and well-served experience. Some interesting seasonal asparagus variations to start: one with cuttle-fish, the other with lamb's sweetbreads: spot on. A lovely veal chop to follow and the other an interesting fillet steak on the bone. perfectly cooked and well-sourced ingredients. Good wines from the Languedoc and the Lebanon - the latter particularly good. Wine mark-ups a tad high and side dish additions make the overall cost of the meal at the luxury end. However, charming and efficient service and we were happily left to stay for over three hours in spite of the theoretical 2 hour limit. Most enjoyable and relaxing and to be repeated "

  • "I had dinner at Hix on a Sunday evening. We were greeted promptly and seated near the back of the restaurant. It was about 1/3 full (7pm) and continued to fill near capacity by 8pm. We ordered goat dumplings, watercress soup, steak, beef and oyster pie, potatoes and salad. All tasted great and were well-presented, but our favorite was the goat dumpling starter. Our only complaint was the lack of staff, which resulted in slow, uneven service. One bartender, waitress, host, and server for 20+ tables. Our waitress was friendly, but stretched too thin, as were the others. We considered dessert, but didn't want to stay longer. When we left, no one was at the door to say good-bye. Better service would have made this a great experience."

  • "I've dined here many times without problem, but this Friday's meal/service was very disappointing. Meals took way too long to come out. Whilst the offering of some complimentary salmon was a nice gesture, my "medium" fillet (at £36!) came out overdone and cold. Having originally told us that one of our orders was "overdone" and was being re-done, I can't help feeling they thought "what the hell, let's serve it and see". Despite being a busy Friday, this shouldn't be a strain on such an established business. So, they dropped the ball in my view and, at their price point, I might struggle to recommend the place without warning of a potential repeat of this poor experience."

  • "Took my wife & baby for a Mother's Day treat. The restaurant is quite tight on space but they were able to accommodate our buggy. Straight away my wife got a free glass of champagne as a Mothers Day surprise, and every mother got the same treatment. The food was sublime, I had Heaven & Earth (black pudding on apple base with chicken sauce) & lamb chop, my wife had asparagus & pheasant egg salad, and sea bass. For dessert we shared the rhubarb tart - one of the best desserts I've ever had and would go back for that alone. All the food was really amazing, in 13 years living in London this was one of the best meals I've had. Service was friendly and exact. The food arrived promptly. Live jazz (piano & bass) provided a lovely ambience.10/10"

  • "Went at 5 pm, when some late lunch customers were finishing off, so were left to the restaurant to ourselves. Prompt yet friendly waiters, knowledgeable about the food. Only problem was our main took quite a long time coming, the only starters we had were 2 oysters for me, got them around 5.15 pm just after ordering. Our steak mains didn't arrive till 45 mins later. Not sure if these are common timings, but my friend had not had any starter, so assumed the mains would come earlier. This meant we had no time for dessert. I supposed we should have let them know we had to leave at a certain time to hurry them along. Nice ambiance and staff though, will come back again"

My most recent visit was on a business lunch with a client that had never previously visited any Hix restaurant. He was suitably impressed, and stated that he would return for an evening meal with his wife. I was, as always, very impressed with the quality of the food, service and the venue. Our steak was very tasty and cooked to perfection! I cannot recommend this particular Hix venue enough, it always has a really good vibe, friendly yet totally professional, very comfortable & classy. Mark Hix should be proud of this venue and the team that represent him & everything he stands for. Keep it up! See you again soon."

  • "We were early for our reservation, but were able to have a table anyway - sadly, from there, it was a terrible experience. Waiter was really poor, didn't listen to our order, so we only received one of our starter dishes, not the 2 we ordered. When we sent it back (there was human hair on it!), he just grabbed it from us, no apology. Main courses - one was ok,the other bland and over priced for fish fingers at £18!! Manager did try to recover the situation, and generously waived the bill. Sadly, having already been to Hix in Lyme Regis and Soho, and having met him in Dartmouth, I fear it may have been some time since Mark Hix actually visited this restaurant - he would have been shocked with what he saw. Definitely will not be returning."
