A word from Hix Oyster and Fish House
Hix Oyster & Fish House overlooks the harbour in Lyme Regis and boasts the most stunning panoramic views across the Jurassic coast. This is easily one of the most picturesque spots to enjoy fresh British fish and seafood. The Fish House is an informal, light and airy dining room with simple white wooden tables and chairs with the added bonus of a large outdoor terrace. Our focus is on sourcing and serving the best produce we can find and doing as little to it as possible so that you enjoy the real flavour of great British ingredients. We cure and smoke our own salmon and grow our own herbs in the Fish House garden.
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.

My Wife and I booked Dinner at Hix following a recommendation from our accommodation. The staff were welcoming and friendly and explained the menu choices. At each stage, staff checked to ensure the food was to our liking. Food was excellent. A very enjoyable dining experience and we will certainly return the next time we are in the vicinity. Jamie S.

The fish, as you would expect given its location overlooking Lyme Bay, was the highlight of the meal. We both had the crab soup to start -rich, intense flavour - followed by the Brill which was firm, fresh and delicious. Would definitely go again.

This restaurant is a real gem. We'd booked for dinner on 8th October and had a lovely table looking out to sea, though the views at lunch must be amazing. Everything from the pre-dinner Black Cow martinis, the chosen wine, the lovely food to the excellent service made this an evening to remember.

I have visited this restaurant since it opened and always enjoyed. On Monday we had a miserable experience. There was no service and we waited a long time for food. We had to ask for drinks by going to one of the staff and waited over an hour for our main course. Had problems been explained we would not have had a problem but 2 junior staff not up to much. On the plus side they took off our service charge but it is a shame to see such a good place being run like this. Where is the management? Food excellent as always!

We ate here in the evening. I'm sure the views are great in daylight but at night all I could see was my reflection in the glass as the interior lighting was rather bright, including a weird coloured circular fluorescent? The food was good, we are not fans of Oysters so Partridge salad & deep fried Sprats to start. For main course Brill and Sole, both on the bone and very tasty. We had portion on 'Chips' which were really 'skinny fries'. The pudding menu looked good, I had the Fumble- a cross between a 'fool' and a crumble, very nice! The service was alright, our waiter (possibly the manager?) was rather over powering and only offered to pour the wine once when it was the tasting! Cheap furnishings, plastic chairs white painted tables

Ambience very good and starter course also very good. Main courses both luke warm on arrival and expensive for what was provided - eg black bream was just a black bream! Also, when paying there was a paper feed error on the terminal and the waitress took my credit card away from the table without my permission. Overall, a somewhat disappointing experience.

Food OK in parts but overall experience so-so .Vegetarian option very poor but good if you consider a plate of gnocchi and nothing else good value. Service was lacking in an establishment such as this - surely part of the meal is good service. We had to ask twice for a number of things. Cooking was good but not brilliant and what appeared to be frozen frites were served. Living on the name I think.

Went here for our wedding anniversary meal. Location is amazing. Having a prosecco outside in the sunshine was lovely. Food was good, but there was a long wait (35-40 minutes) between finishing our starter and the main course coming out. So for a 12.30 Tuesday lunch booking, we got our mains at 1.55 - and that was after a prompt. No apology given. We were then in a rush as needed to leave. Service was friendly at the start but when things got a bit busier nobody seemed fussed. I explained that I wouldn't pay the service charge that had been automatically added to the bill, and just got a mumbled comment that 'it was the busy time'. What a shame as we had looked forward to going to Mark Hix's restaurant for years. We won't be going back.

I think Hix is slipping. May be end of season blues, but restaurant looks tired and service was very poor. Waited over an hour for mains and staff were far from responsive. A good view is no substitute for poor service. Food was however good although this is so easily ruined by a shabby front of house. Probably won't return any time soon and wouldn't recommend any one else do either.

My wife and I dined at Hix to celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday. Although we arrived early we were welcomed and given a superb table. The food was superb as was the carafe of wine. All the staff were very friendly and made time for a chat as they served us or passed by our table. It was so difficult to choose from the menu but our starters and mains were fabulous. We opted not to have dessert as we were full but instead ordered chocolate truffles which came on a plate with Happy Anniversary inscribed in chocolate. All in all it was well worth the 2 hour drive we made to get to the restaurant .Even though it was an overcast day the view was still superb. We were delighted with the overall experience. Thank you Hix.

I went here with my husband for our wedding anniversary in September. It's a beautiful restaurant with stunning views, but the service was sloppy, the rosé was warm, the starters were too big and overpriced and the main courses were average. We had to ask for drinks, sides and other things that were missing from the order more than once, and the waiter seemed disingenuous when I told him I wasn't entirely happy. For a restaurant with a high profile chef, they'd really got the balance wrong. They need to revisit the size of the portions, make the prices more appropriate and sort out the service.

Some of the dishes we ordered were fabulous (fish curry, lemon sole) but other dishes were actually quite poor (e.g. far too much salt in both the side dishes and one of the starters we ordered wasn't very good). The cocktail list was lack lustre. We were most disappointed with the service. We felt rushed from the start and our waiter was very grumpy to the point of being rude. The whole experience smacked of "we know we're well-known in London and good so we're not going to bother". We wouldn't go back as the food wasn't worth the poor service. It's a shame because I have dined there before with someone else and it wasn't as bad - maybe we caught them on an off night. But for the price and reputation, I don't think that's an excuse.

Pretentious waiters, extremely slow service and decidedly average food. We went prepared to be blown away and left feeling we'd been sucked in by the famous name. It's in a fabulous location and would be a wonderful experience if only they got the basics right. As we ate we couldn't help but overhear the complaints from other tables as they paid their bills. Unfortunately we had to agree with them.

On the plus side views are spectacular. On the down side service was barely adequate from a supercilious waiter, couldn't be bothered to wipe down table after spilling soup starter. Food was over salted crab soup, uninspiring John Dory , had to ask for the hollandaise sauce which I had ordered. Greeted by "oh I will try and move your table as you won't like the one that has been allocated" not an inspiring opening line. General opinion way too expensive for a very mundane eating experience. Would not return as view matched by many other restaurants in lyme Regis.

Arrived at restaurant - guy on til didn't even look round at us as focussing on his seating plan, so didn't feel too welcomed. Sat at table (13 I think) where they send the dirty plates down etc to kitchen with an open bin below and it was constantly noisy as well as something we didn't really want to see and hear. Some girl sorting out the cutlery . basically noisy. Expect it in a seafront cafe not at Hix. Service ok - had a G&T but wasn't asked what gin & we didn't realise how many were on offer until we saw menu. Quid each for tap water? Wasn't asked if we wanted more drinks. Food was excellent. Would love to go during the day for the views. We just felt we'd left Hix intil out last night & it didn't stand out as we'd hoped.

I was disappointed with the experience. Arrived for 12.30 lunch. Ordered one main course each - these arrived at 1.20 and one of them was incomplete despite the waitress saying on bringing them 'the chips are on their way.' 10 minutes later when I had nearly finished I left the table to ask if there was any chance of the chips - 'oh, I forgot ' was the response. Two main course, one glass of wine ,one beer and two coffees and the bill was £59.12. This cannot be good value in my view. I had taken a friend as a special treat and it was not that.

Having spent years enduring pasta and pizza restaurants because of wanting an easy life with a picky eater, I decided it was time to extend their range, and booked the restaurant knowing that fish fingers and chips were on the menu as a fail safe option. In fact my teenage son was entranced by the setting and the sense of the restaurant being relaxed eating that he opted for Manx Queenies (No - I did not know they were small scallops before going to Hix's) and devoured them with gusto and then the fish fingers and chips. They were the best fish fingers he had ever had. So he was happy, and we were happy to be able to eat some fabulous fish in a perfect setting. A special place to eat in and a relaxed place too - a great combination.

We had heard amazing things about this place but we were ever so disappointed. Even though the place was very quiet for a Saturday afternoon, the service was terrible. There were a lot of staff standing around chatting, even though we were trying to get their attention, we felt quite ignored. We asked for bread 3 times before it was brought to us. (about 30 min wait) Another couple had just sat down after us and were given their bread immediately. We waited a long time between courses, water and wine were spilt on pouring, I eventually had to mop that up myself with my napkin as no one came back with a cloth. The food itself was average and extremely expensive. I would not recommend or return again. Sorry.

We eat at the Fish & Oyster House for most special occasions. Yet again what a fabulous evening - food, wine and ambience all excellent. The food is excellent value for the quality of food. The wine list is good but the mark up is excessive compared to other similar restaurants in the area. It does mean we drink less which I suppose is a good thing! Nonetheless we'll be back!

Great setting, view and service. Loved the scrumpy battered oysters. The buttermilk fried cuttle fish however had far too much chili; it completely overpowered the dish. The 'dressed' crab for a main, although delicious, was not in the shell which is how we'd expected it to be served. Felt a bit shortchanged, both in quantity and presentation as a result. However the hake on a stew of peppers was absolutely fabulous and the chocolate truffles with cider brandy served with coffee were the perfect end to our meal. All in all the Hix visit was a highspot on our Devon holiday; pricey but a satisfying experience overall.

Being a dedicated carnivore. It was with some trepidation the booking was made. The starter hixs own cure salmon was meaty not a wafer thin greasy bit of oily fish I was in heaven. I asked for a doggy bag to share the experience with the remains of the fily at no charge I might add. My main the simple pie. Solid 'chunks' of texture and flavour no bits of fish I am converted. The sweet left me stunned the chocolate mouse have me a high that complemented the stunning harbour view of dear old Lyme Regis. I was away. Left to savour a lavish experience at a British beach holiday. What more could one want. Excellent.

This restaurant is a gem, and one of a kind in Lyme Regis. Overall I have to rate it highly - lovely food, knowledgable staff, amazing setting (overlooking the bay). The restaurant looks lovely inside and the terrace outside (where we sat with our dog) has great views. The only reason I have not rated five stars is the service began to slip during the end of the meal - we were not offered deserts (I had to ask for the menus) and I had to flag down the waiters a couple of times so they could have been slightly more attentive. Overall though I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

As it was a bank holiday weekend I cannot really blame the restaurant. However we were on the point of having to cancel our booking as we literally could not find anywhere to park. As the standard and experience of the restaurant was good I think the owners should be considering acquiring some reserved parking of their own perhaps even valet parking. That would improve the experience no end.

Extremely slow service (waited an hour and a half for our starter and the meal went on like this), no apology about this, I also felt it was slightly unprofessional service. The music being played was awful - euro house/dance music. The view was gorgeous. The oysters were wonderful, the cocktails a bit hit or miss, the food was average and over priced - £11.50 for a bowl of fries (which constituted 3 portions put together) is a bit over the top, and £6.50 for a chocolate mousse? My husband, who is a chef, advised that his steak was pretty tasteless.

Kitchen very slow - 45 minutes before any food appeared after some enquiry to the reluctant staff. Ambience is one of self-satisfaction on the restaurant's part which is not warranted as far as we could see. Staff appear smug and disinterested.. We had the worst table in the place next to the slops. Food is good but not special. It's probably ok if you are local and fit the restaurant's intended "demographic".
