A word from Hix Oyster and Fish House
Hix Oyster & Fish House overlooks the harbour in Lyme Regis and boasts the most stunning panoramic views across the Jurassic coast. This is easily one of the most picturesque spots to enjoy fresh British fish and seafood. The Fish House is an informal, light and airy dining room with simple white wooden tables and chairs with the added bonus of a large outdoor terrace. Our focus is on sourcing and serving the best produce we can find and doing as little to it as possible so that you enjoy the real flavour of great British ingredients. We cure and smoke our own salmon and grow our own herbs in the Fish House garden.
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.

Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful dinner here on Easter Sunday staff were brilliant and food was fresh and skilfully cooked - great wine list as well - very highly recommended "

  • "I live in Gloucestershire but have never seen elvers available here and so it was especially pleasurable to see them on the menu here. They were cooked in bacon fat with cubes of bacon and were delicious. Great John Dorys to follow and an excellent blood orange jelly. Excellent service and charming service: circumstances had meant that I ended up dining alone and the front of house staff were charming when I 'phoned to let them know and when I arrived. A highly pleasurable experience all round."

  • "we made reservation for dinner at Hix Fis House on monday apr14 thru Toptable reservation; all well arranged. We started with a seafood platter for2 persons; excellent presentation with superb crab, oysters and lobster. As maincourse we had the Fish Pie which was superb! All accompanied with rose and mineral water nicely presented in a somerset jug all followed by a delicous rhubarb tart with custerd espresso macchiato; a treat ! all this combined with nice helpfull staff and unique location on the cliff made iit a special memorable night in Lyme Regis! we will certainly come back on our next visitto the south east! b rgds Mary & Paul "

  • "We walked from eype on a sunny spring day fir my husbands birthday and I could not have chosen a more lovely spot. Views if Cobb, delicious unusual food including local marine delicacies ! I loved the buckthorn cheesecake . Service was great. "

  • "Restaurant is in a great location over looking the Lyme regis harbour and providing a view of the Jurassic cliffs for miles. The food and service more than matches the view. I was recommended the Monkfish and Squash curry, which I ordered with trepidation, but was stunning, my wife her first lobster. Would have come earlier for drinks outside, if I had known the setting was so great."

  • "We were seated in the window of the bright airy dining room with an outstanding view over Lyme Bay. The seafood soup was pleasant but the only evidence of seafood was crab. The eweetbreads were a little unimaginative being served in breadcrumbs and the smoked salmon was... smoked salmon. My overall impression of the starters on offer was that they were expensive. Our selection of main courses was not adventurous but the quality is good but again expensive for what it was. My major criticism was the service. It was slow we only had 2 courses but it took more than 2 hours. They were slow taking the initial order and there was a huge gap between courses."

  • "Until going up to the restaurant, it is difficult to imagine the view from it. Very friendly service, even though they were very busy. Great view! A romantic spot. If it were not with all the great seafood( that is why it can get messy at the table) I would say a spot to propose. The food variety and the taste, outstanding. The price might be considered a little high for most of the dishes, of not all. But we would definitely go back there."

  • "There were 6 of us for dinner and although most of the food was good, one of the main dishes, which 2 of us had ordered, was inedible. It was difficult to see how it could ever have worked - a slice of potato with fish around it and fried in batter. The potato was raw and had grey blotches. They handled it very well and replaced our meals with alternatives and didn't charge for either but it was very disappointing in a restaurant of this reputation - and price!"

  • "Very enjoyable set menu at Hix in Lyme Regis. Sat at the front overlooking bay. Just lovely. So good went again the next night!"
    dined on 01/04/2014
  • "The food was lovely, but a little over priced. The drink was very overpriced! Didn't expect to pay £6 for a jug of tap water! But, an amazing view of lyme."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "This was to be a special lunch to celebrate my 60th birthday with friends. The restaurant has beautiful sea views and is contemporary and cosy. However the food was very average and overpriced. My gurnard was cold and under poked and poorly presented. The fish soup was cold and bland. £1 per person for tap water was excessive even if it was supporting a charity. The service was slow and unremarkable, so the service charge was paid grudgingly. £146 for the meal was ridiculously high. There are far better places to eat in Lyme."
    dined on 09/04/2014
  • "Perfect place, wonderful view and excellent food. Highly recommended. Started with oysters done three ways, then asparagus with pheasant egg, followed by fabulous fish pie and cheesecake for pudding. My wife went straight for a mackerel and beetroot starter, followed by brill and a blood orate jelly for dessert. The tarragon dressing on the salad is worthy of mention. Overall just excellent."

  • "Enjoyable meal. Would go again. Unusual location, and view probably lovely though it was thick fog when we were there. Casual and 'modern classic' atmosphere, eating at 6pm, service smart and friendly, although we were "sold" drinks, bread and cocktails the minute we sat down. Crab was excellent, and "fish fingers" accompanied by good chips and "mushy peas". Most dishes £20+ also needed sides, which seemed expensive. Sorbets were delicious (blood orange and rhubarb). Walk from the Cobb or through the gardens from the promenade is only 200yds but very steep, be warned!"
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Location is special but book early and ask for a window table. Probably need to reserve months ahead for high season. Food was really good and the service excellent. The sea and harbour view from the window table made for a memorable evening. Items not ticked in section 2 because not assessed. WouldIgoback? Definitely"

  • "A pre-60th birthday lunch was made very special by the friendly and personal service. The food was good, too, and although I am not a 'foodie' as such, the Buttermilk pudding with King's ginger and lemon was magic !!"
    dined on 03/04/2014
  • "This was our first visit and certainly won't be our last. A superb location with outstanding views and a warm welcome from the staff. The restaraunt was busy for a Tuesday lunchtime, but we always feel that to be a good sign and were not dissappointed by the food which was excellent, and despite the staff being one down they coped well with the service and kept their good humour! Be prepared for a bracing walk to and from the venue but well worth the effort!"
    dined on 01/04/2014
  • "Our second visit and once again not disappointed. Great place, great food."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "Excellent service and ambience. Could not be better. Food was top notch. We shared a crab between us and it was delicious and perfectly cooked. The John Dory was outstanding. Cooked to the point of perfection, falling firmly off the bone. Just thought the wine, a Pinot Grigio, was a little 'flat'. Otherwise five stars all round."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "We had a wonderful lunch. The food was superb and the view over the Cobb was stunning. It was let down by a rather indifferent waitress who was more interested in what was going on around than in looking after us and it took ages to get and pay the bill. Both seats in the ladies loos were loose - surely it's not too much to expect them to be fixed?"
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "Hix - Lyme Regis was recommended by family and we choose to book for a birthday celebration, The meal was special and enjoyable. The staff were pleasant and knowledgable about the meals. The only slight hick-cup was that the seating was a little cramped and we had to ask the next table to move slightly which was not received graciously. Overall we would recommend the experience."
    dined on 23/03/2014
  • "The Hix restaurant has a beautiful setting and polite and attentive staff. However, although the produce is fresh, the menu and cooking left us somewhat underwhelmed. We paid an awful lot of money for what we hoped would have been a very positive dining experience but we were left with food that I would describe as ordinary and could probably be found in a number of the lovely Bistros in Lime Bay at a fraction of the cost. Also a small bottle of beer £5!!"
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "What a wonderful restaurant. The food was great and the staff most welcoming and nothing too much bother. Very relaxed atmosphere with stunning views over the bay. Would highly recommend."

  • "Great service/food. But staff where alittle scruffy. Casual is ok,but need to smartern up."
    dined on 12/03/2014
  • "Excellent service and outstanding view of the Cobb at Lyme Regis.A good place to have lunch and enjoy the ambience. Not too busy so food arrived promptly. Liked the jug of water offered a nice touch.Felt that bread and butter to nibble away at with pre meal drink did not meet expectations. Perhaps olives canapés e.t.c. Would be better or something more unusual. Starters of cuttlefish and prawns were good.We enjoyed Red Mullet and Bream but shared vegetables as it was very pricey.Portions of vegetables were not large .Again we shared a dessert of ice cream which was yummy. We would visit again for a special occasion but not very often as it was expensive."
    dined on 12/03/2014
  • "A slick package, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "On what proved to be the warmest day of the year so far we enjoyed a fabulous lunch. Both main courses were perfectly cooked and the chocolate mousse was to die for. Service as always was professional but uber friendly and relaxed."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "The location is great with brilliant views towards the coast and harbour. The ambience is relaxed. We felt for the prices charged the food was underwhelming in the flavour department although presentation was lovely. Service was flamboyant and helpful although we felt rather 'sold to' on occasions."
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "Great atmosphere. Went with two friends and we chatted for hours. Didn't feel rushed which was great. Delicious food if a little pricey."
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "Outlook and aspect could'nt be better.Restaurant light and airy.Linen napkins.Been many times .Food generally good and well executed but pricey.e.g Fish pie 14.95 chips are of the 'Stringfellow' genre disappointing no handcut chips ' Silver plated bowls used for extra charged veg have seen better days.We were charged a la carte prices for set meal that was after I was given the bill for the table next door in error! we were reimbursed over the phone to be fair .Experience seems to depend on what staff are working at the time.Drinks are on the expensive side eg High St S African Sauvignon £37.Beware your Bill will carry 10% service which is discretionary but it is automatically added so kind of difficult to dodge if your in company."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "After all the bad weather we have had it was perfect to be in Lyme Regis on a glorious sunny day in February for a late lunch at Hix with its view down across parts of the town to the Cobb. Friendly staff provided a good standard of service without frills in relaxed enviroment and fresh fish cooked simply but well with interesting touches and flavours. Having gone to enjoy the fish which was all good (- cuttlefish in a buttermilk batter with a kick of paprika, the divine marinated herring followed for both of us by Black Sea Bream with a green sauce -) it was perhaps the buttermilk pudding with blood oranges that capped it all - light, exquisite subtle flavours - a perfect 10! We will certainly return when in this part of the world again."
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "We have eaten here 4 or 5 times and it is always an absolute pleasure. Great attention to detail without being overly fussy or pretentious and only the finest and freshest fish and shellfish. Staff are helpful and knowledgeable if a little aloof. always packed and buzzing with interesting clientele. Excellent imaginative dishes and cocktails. Highly recommended."

  • "Had a lovely lunch in celebration of my husbands 70th birthday. Made to feel very welcome. Service and food very god. Shame we were too full for pudding! Thank you, we willl be back"
    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "A great place to celebrate my 70th birthday. The view was amazing in spite of the horrific weather and the food was excellent especially the oysters. The staff made us very welcome - a great way to spend a couple of hours on a wet and windy day!! My compliments to the kitchen staff who made my day even more special by decorating my dessert plate with chocolate birthday greetings."
    dined on 06/02/2014
  • "The service at Hix although very friendly was shambolic, had a table for 10, no cutlery was replaced after the 1st course, meals were missed off the order and took so long to arrive that no one ate at the same time. Also my food was served on a cold plate so my food was cold before I could finish it. When I finally did get a spoon for my pudding it was a serving spoon. I was very dissapointed even after getting a discount for the mess up, they really need to sort this out as this is now the third time this has happened to us!!!"
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "We were well looked after on our arrival and the overall service was attentive, timely but not too over the top. The food was brilliant with superb fish. After ordering our meal they brought some bread and crispy shallots to keep us going. really nice touch. Staff were all knowledgeable about the food and the drink, and it's a lovely setting high on top overlooking the Cobb. A good selection of dishes too. Overall, a great dining experience in Lyme Regis and as a surprise for my wife's birthday."
    dined on 07/02/2014
  • "We arrived & were surprised to find we were sat at the kitchen table we had requested this on our initial booking but it was taken so we were prepared to sit in the restaurant with a view across Lyme Bay. I mentioned in my email that if it became vacant we were happy to move but expected someone to let us know. Due to our ignorance we were unaware the table was downstairs with no view or other diners. We assumed everything was on one level. We were given a couple of additional starter plates this did not make up for the general noise of the kitchen with extractor fans fryers & the fact that our clothes smelt of deep fried oil for the rest of the night. The food was good but the general service not great apart from the young lad serving us."

  • "We had some friends staying with us from Bristol and wanted to end their last night on a high which Hix restaurant didn't disappoint, lovely food, staff and setting."
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "Our first visit, for my husband's birthday. I rang and asked for a good table and they gave us the best in the house, in the window which had a wonderful view of a storm-lashed Lyme Regis bay. Staff were welcoming and very friendly, the menu varied, and the prices a great deal less than we had expected. They do an excellent value lunch special menu in the winter. The food was well presented, tasty (the oysters got 5 stars from husband!). The wine choice was good, and the final bill was a pleasant surprise for such an enjoyable and tasty experience. We will definitely go back and will no longer think of it as "a place to go for a special treat". The prices make it affordable all year round and compare well to other restaurants nearby."
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly, welcoming and relaxed. The dining room has lovely views over Lyme Bay and a warm relaxed atmosphere. We weren't rushed in any way and spent a fantastic 3 hours or so enjoying beautiful food and drink, locally sourced and well prepared and presented. The staff were knowledgable and happy to help and advise on our choices. The price is reasonable for the very high quality and we will definitely be returning."
    dined on 28/01/2014
  • "Ideal for good value interesting set menu. A chance to taste dishes one might not want to order in larger portions eg. Steamed Arne Bay cockles. Menu changes weekly ( I think). Great atmosphere, lovely staff, and every one on same deal for that evening."
