Getting there

  • Public Transit:
    The bus stops in the high street - from here please walk through Langmoor Gardens next to the cinema.
    The nearest train station is Axminster and Lyme Regis is a tenure drive away in a taxi or there is a bus which stops by the station.

  • Parking Details:
    The nearest car park is Holmbush which is a few minutes walk from the restaurant (£1.70 a day, and free after 6pm). There is also an NCP car park next to Tesco metro in the high street - from here please walk through Langmoor Gardens next to the cinema. A further car park by the Cobb is also available but at the bottom of a very steep hill so not suitable for people with walking difficulties (£1.70 a day and free after 6pm).
A word from Hix Oyster and Fish House
Hix Oyster & Fish House overlooks the harbour in Lyme Regis and boasts the most stunning panoramic views across the Jurassic coast. This is easily one of the most picturesque spots to enjoy fresh British fish and seafood. The Fish House is an informal, light and airy dining room with simple white wooden tables and chairs with the added bonus of a large outdoor terrace. Our focus is on sourcing and serving the best produce we can find and doing as little to it as possible so that you enjoy the real flavour of great British ingredients. We cure and smoke our own salmon and grow our own herbs in the Fish House garden.
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.

  • "Parking a nightmare, it took about an hour to park and we eventually had to park about a mile up the hill on the roadside. No spaces available in car parks. Drinks extremely expensive. Bottle of lemonade dropped over my sons shoes and my handbag (very sticky). Ordered bread, staff forgot it. Overcharged for an item that we hadn't ordered. Most unlikely that we would visit again or recommend."

  • "Considering booked table well in advance disappointed to be put right at the back and close to the door. Staff friendly although rather puzzled at the response to the request for samphire with one of the dishes. Was told that out of season. Wondered how this could be the case seen as we overheard another waiter ask another table if they would like some and also the fact that we had purchased some from the local market 2 days before. Food was very good but overall didn't feel comfortable and could not wait to leave!"

We arrived a little early and we're invited to wait on the outside terrace as our table was not ready. We waited about 10 minutes beyond our booking time for our table to become vacant. Another couple had a similar but longer experience. The setting overlooking Lyme Regis harbour and bay is breathtaking. The meal was pleasant but expensive."

  • "We had a great night celebrating a friends birthday. We had drinks on the terrace overlooking Lyme Bay which is just stunning. We were then shown to our table and the staff were very attentive and friendly. The food....was delicious and the presentation was perfect. The food was slightly expensive, as you can find freshly sourced food and fresh fish in Dorset cheaper and cooked to the same standard. But overall the experience was perfect."

Webster's fish fingers which I have chosen on previous occasions were overcooked, lacking in fish content and generally disappointing. Smoked salmon was good. The special effort to provide Affogato was much appreciated. All in all a happy experience."

  • "I was expecting a gastro experience. Smoked salmon, 4 slices of salmon on a plate, no garnish, certainly no culinary skills. My wife ordered dressed crab. The whole crab was what was expected although no bread or garnish. The dressed crab was dressed crab on a plate. no garnish, no lemon on the plate and I would dispute that it was from a whole crab as there was just enough to make a sandwich To sum the experience up I would say it was like eating in a cafe with a view. Would you expect a fine restaurant to have bottles of 'Sarsons' vinegar and 'HP' tomato sauce on show!"

The staff were very attentive, food excellent, would recommend the smoked salmon and fish pie especially - Wine list slightly disappointed - but that may juts be me, seemed expensive for the liquid in the bottle. Overall a great experience but very much a treat on our budget"

  • "The setting is perfect with uninterrupted views over the harbour and the sea. It was nice to be able to site outside with a cocktail and enjoy our surroundings. However, service was slow. For the main course, two of us chose the mixed grilled fish for two at £49. This comes with a green sauce and a hollandaise sauce. We had been told that one of the fishes would be John Dory. You get two pieces each of three kinds of fish. None of them was John Dory. The sauces never came and we had to remind the waiter three times. The accompanying vegetables were also very slow in coming. I think that if four people are dining together, for the price we were paying, you can expect to be served at the same time. Cost was £182 without wine or pudding"

The service was dismal - so many staff at the door that we couldn't get through. Restaurant half full but no welcome, no warmth, long wait to be served, very long wait to have table cleared, staff not familar with menu, etc. One of those place where the staf are more important than the customers."

  • "Stunning view on a clear sunny evening. Were dealt with promptly on arrival. The food was good. Sandeels and lobster to start, then the Huss curry and Hake for main. The curry was too hot for myself. I should have asked how how it would have been, as it surprised me. I had expected more spice flavour rather than heat. The hake was very light with buttered peas. The side of fries crisp. Dessert was gooseberry pie & clotted cream - delicious and Buttermilk and sea buckthorn, again delicious. Finished with mint tea and coffee."

  • "When we booked online we advised Hix that this was our wedding day/honeymoon. We were greeted by a very pleasant host, who asked had we done much today? When we replied yes we got married. His response was I know! They had taken note of our request and put us in the window as requested. After being seated we were given complimentary cocktails to celebrate our marriage. This was our first visit and we were looked after very well by a charming young man with a warm smile. He asked did we need anything explaining on the menu. The food was excellent and service with a smile. Would thoroughly recommend !"

  • "Having been to HIX Soho many times, we were excited to go to it's Dorset cousin. It's a beautiful setting, The views were amazing and the staff great and took our order.......all good. The starters came shortly afterward, crab soup and a prawn cocktail. The presentation of both highly underwhelming. However both tasted outstanding, so we waited excitedly for the main courses, by now the place was full. We ran out of water and wine and sat like this for nearly 40 mins. When asked they said we were next after at least 5 tables who arrived after us were served. We had to ask for water and then ask for the dishes to be removed that had been on the table since we finished. Both meals were ok, nothing so good as to make us go back. A great shame."

  • "We had attempted to get into the restaurant before on short notice which was not possible, so this time the table was booked well in advance. The wait was absolutely worth it. On a sunny evening we had the perfect window seat over looking the harbour which added to the visit. The service was first class, getting the right balance between discreet but attentive at the same time. The questions regarding the menu were answered with confidence and knowledge which aided our choice as to how adventurous we were. The quality of the food and presentation was of the highest quality, with locally sourced produce and the scallops were so fresh you could think that the chef nipped down to the bay to collect a few. A visit here again is a definite."

The waiter was very friendly helpful and made the experience easier as he explained the best way to eat the chosen foods and also he suggested what other foods would work well with the dishes. I really would like to go back as the scenery was stunning and very romantic."

  • "I took my wife here for our wedding anniversary and to try it out before our daughter and now husband were planning to go as a special post wedding dinner. We enjoyed the food - the most sophisticated whelks I have ever had - but were sat in the middle of a rather noisy room with no view of Lyme or the Cobb at all, and felt the meal was overpriced compared with many other local fish restaurants/pubs. I particularly didn't like the practice of presenting a bill with a 'discretionary' tip already added although the service had been good and informative."

  • "This was a real disappointment. The service was poor - very slow with badly trained staff. We were offered bread but had to request it twice before it turned up; the sparkling water never arrived at all, and the special cocktail we ordered took so long to make that our starters were already on the table when the waiter brought it over. Luckily they were cold, so we were able to finish our drinks first. Food in general was uninspiring, with the exception of the whole sea-bass my partner ordered, which he said was perfect. Just a shame about everything else. They obviously know that the view (which is stunning) will pull customers in, but they won't get any returning business unless they raise their game - especially at these prices."

  • "Been here before about five years ago when it seemed very good indeed, even memorable. This time more mixed, particularly because of the service and atmosphere. Very loud music was playing and we had to ask for it to be turned down. The waiting staff seemed to be from Lyme Regis' boy band. Not one for overly fussy service, but this was the opposite. Too chummy - we were the 'guys' - and we had a rotation of waiters who kept asking the same thing. The food was good, but not so much better than at the nearby hotel where we were staying (The Alexandra) that we would call it 'can't miss'."
