A word from Hix Oyster and Fish House
Hix Oyster & Fish House overlooks the harbour in Lyme Regis and boasts the most stunning panoramic views across the Jurassic coast. This is easily one of the most picturesque spots to enjoy fresh British fish and seafood. The Fish House is an informal, light and airy dining room with simple white wooden tables and chairs with the added bonus of a large outdoor terrace. Our focus is on sourcing and serving the best produce we can find and doing as little to it as possible so that you enjoy the real flavour of great British ingredients. We cure and smoke our own salmon and grow our own herbs in the Fish House garden.
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.

We go to Hix on high days and holidays and it never disappoints - we always have an oyster or three to start and then a great sea bass for main. Ask for a window table and soak up the fantastic views over the Cobb.

Overall good but not Great. Friendly competent attentive staff. Nice spacious table for two. Exceptional views of Jurassic Coast. Wife's starter - Smoked Salmon, delicate and well flavoured. My starter - Prawn Cocktail, 15 or so good sized prawns, not overwhelmed by flavour of Rose Marie sauce. Mains - We both had John Dory. There were two very small fish on each plate. Slightly over cooked and insufficient eating, I would estimate about 100 grams of fish. Due to the very small size, it was a faff to separate the flesh from the skin. We were not rushed, but throughout the 2 hours we were there, there was a none too pleasant odour of hot cooking fat.

My girlfriend and I ate there last Saturday evening. I have to say I thought the food was overrated, and very expensive. I travel a lot on business so do know good food when I see it. I had the hake and at £20+ by the time chips were added (fries), it was very expensive. My girfriend had monkfish curry which although tasty the meat was on the bone, which reduced how much meat was in the curry. Again this was £20+. We had a cheese board for dessert and this was appalling. 2 very small pieces of cheese for £8! We sat by the back door to the terrace and this was constantly opening and closing with a cold draught all the time. My view is that this was average food at Michelin star prices and the restaurant is trading on the Hix name. Poor.

A simple menu with a great range of flavours, from the three starters , the very tasty hake curry and the most excellent parkin to complete the meal. We will definitely be going back for the next Taster Event.

Went with a business associate for dinner - who had already had a heafty lunch so didn't want as much as me - this was 'accommodated'. The new winter evening set menu good value- their fish pie is tasty and fish portions generous, a dish accompanied by 'sea vegatables' one would expect a choice not a few sea beet leaves. What I always struggle with in this restaurant is that the staff always seem to behave as if they are doing you a favour by being there. This is a shame as I would use this restaurant far more often for family meals as well as business and in the winter months when I would have thought they'd welcome more business. Their donation to charity by charging customers a £1 each for tap water now removed

Good food but it is hard to muck up live oysters! Annoying charges for sides, the dressed crab was just that on a plate on its own! A handful of leaves would have perked it up, it just felt mean. Annoying charges for house water - per head?? I donate to charity personally and don't need to know a restaurant is doing it If I spend on their water...also menu full of stuff not available that evening or things only available at certain times, just annoying as I don't want to know what I can't have. For some reason we were charged for kids menus which was advertised as free before 6. Table was booked and we sat down at 5.30, do they have to have eaten it by 5.59? Enjoyed it but wasn't feeling very indulged by Hix.

Second visit here, food again excellent, service improved this time, seemed to have more staff working. Food does take a long time to arrive but it is worth the wait and of course it is being prepared and cooked individually. Allow one hour from arriving to eating. Views to die for obviously. Chose the White wine, can't remember the name but from Hix Portugese vineyard, very acceptable. Will be eating here again without doubt.

We were looking forward to our Anniversary lunch at Mark Hix's Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis, and although the restaurant was pleasant enough, and in a great location overlooking the Cobb, we found the food to be at best bland and at worst tasteless. I had sprats with a mayo sauce which tasted of nothing and fish "fingers" which had overcooked fish and chips like something from McDonalds. My wife fared a little better with a butternut squash starter which was warm but served on a cold plate, but quite tasty, she also had the same main course as myself and found it ordinary. We were disappointed with the overall (quite expensive) experience.

Service ok, taste of food good, restaurant setting great. Unfortunately the food wasn't up to the mark, 2 of the party ordered Whole crab, what we ended up with was the body of the crab but only the claws to eat. No brown meat in the crab leaving very little for lunch. I'm not sure this is acceptable when advertised as a whole crab, in hind sight we should of said something at the time. The bill came to £185 for 4 mains and 4 starters. These are London prices but Nit London standards. Very disappointed with the experience.

You cant say the food is not good, it is, my fish was excellent. It is a little pricey especially the wine, comparable to anything you would expect to find in a top restaurant in Soho. Oh and our waitress was a little grumpy. You don't need that at these prices.

We had visited Hix Oyster and fish house on many occasions before , but the food quality just keep us coming back . the restaurant itself has a lovely and simple theme of lighthouse without pompous surrounding one may expect from celebrity restaurant , but that’s what makes it very charming . The food quality is outstanding , all locally sourced and menu will depend on a season . this is exactly what we like , one never can be certain what is on a menu , so its not predictable the same old thing all the time . The team of personal are very friendly and attentive . thanks to all of them , our glasses never being empty during a meal . the palette of the dishes were very nice balanced

We have been here a number of times and I would not normally post a negative review as the food here has always been excellent and the location magnificent . But there is a theme about the service standards. Wherever we have sat we have always had to remind the staff about some part of our order. Which given the overall cost of a meal here with drinks of £150 this is not what we expect It not stop us using the restaurant again but they appear to be understaffed in the evenings Debby @ Raymonds Hill

I have visited this restaurant since it opened and always enjoyed. On Monday we had a miserable experience. There was no service and we waited a long time for food. We had to ask for drinks by going to one of the staff and waited over an hour for our main course. Had problems been explained we would not have had a problem but 2 junior staff not up to much. On the plus side they took off our service charge but it is a shame to see such a good place being run like this. Where is the management? Food excellent as always!

We ate here in the evening. I'm sure the views are great in daylight but at night all I could see was my reflection in the glass as the interior lighting was rather bright, including a weird coloured circular fluorescent? The food was good, we are not fans of Oysters so Partridge salad & deep fried Sprats to start. For main course Brill and Sole, both on the bone and very tasty. We had portion on 'Chips' which were really 'skinny fries'. The pudding menu looked good, I had the Fumble- a cross between a 'fool' and a crumble, very nice! The service was alright, our waiter (possibly the manager?) was rather over powering and only offered to pour the wine once when it was the tasting! Ambience very good and starter course also very good. Main courses both luke warm on arrival and expensive for what was provided - eg black bream was just a black bream! Also, when paying there was a paper feed error on the terminal and the waitress took my credit card away from the table without my permission. Overall, a somewhat disappointing experience.

Food OK in parts but overall experience so-so .Vegetarian option very poor but good if you consider a plate of gnocchi and nothing else good value. Service was lacking in an establishment such as this - surely part of the meal is good service. We had to ask twice for a number of things. Cooking was good but not brilliant and what appeared to be frozen frites were served. Living on the name I think.

Went here for our wedding anniversary meal. Location is amazing. Having a prosecco outside in the sunshine was lovely. Food was good, but there was a long wait (35-40 minutes) between finishing our starter and the main course coming out. So for a 12.30 Tuesday lunch booking, we got our mains at 1.55 - and that was after a prompt. No apology given. We were then in a rush as needed to leave. Service was friendly at the start but when things got a bit busier nobody seemed fussed. I explained that I wouldn't pay the service charge that had been automatically added to the bill, and just got a mumbled comment that 'it was the busy time'. What a shame as we had looked forward to going to Mark Hix's restaurant for years. We won't be going back.

I think Hix is slipping. May be end of season blues, but restaurant looks tired and service was very poor. Waited over an hour for mains and staff were far from responsive. A good view is no substitute for poor service. Food was however good although this is so easily ruined by a shabby front of house. Probably won't return any time soon and wouldn't recommend any one else do either.

My wife and I dined at Hix to celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday. Although we arrived early we were welcomed and given a superb table. The food was superb as was the carafe of wine. All the staff were very friendly and made time for a chat as they served us or passed by our table. It was so difficult to choose from the menu but our starters and mains were fabulous. We opted not to have dessert as we were full but instead ordered chocolate truffles which came on a plate with Happy Anniversary inscribed in chocolate. All in all it was well worth the 2 hour drive we made to get to the restaurant .Even though it was an overcast day the view was still superb. We were delighted with the overall experience. Thank you Hix.

I went here with my husband for our wedding anniversary in September. It's a beautiful restaurant with stunning views, but the service was sloppy, the rosé was warm, the starters were too big and overpriced and the main courses were average. We had to ask for drinks, sides and other things that were missing from the order more than once, and the waiter seemed disingenuous when I told him I wasn't entirely happy. For a restaurant with a high profile chef, they'd really got the balance wrong. They need to revisit the size of the portions, make the prices more appropriate and sort out the service.

Some of the dishes we ordered were fabulous (fish curry, lemon sole) but other dishes were actually quite poor (e.g. far too much salt in both the side dishes and one of the starters we ordered wasn't very good). The cocktail list was lack lustre. We were most disappointed with the service. We felt rushed from the start and our waiter was very grumpy to the point of being rude. The whole experience smacked of "we know we're well-known in London and good so we're not going to bother". We wouldn't go back as the food wasn't worth the poor service. It's a shame because I have dined there before with someone else and it wasn't as bad - maybe we caught them on an off night. But for the price and reputation, I don't think that's an excuse.

Pretentious waiters, extremely slow service and decidedly average food. We went prepared to be blown away and left feeling we'd been sucked in by the famous name. It's in a fabulous location and would be a wonderful experience if only they got the basics right. As we ate we couldn't help but overhear the complaints from other tables as they paid their bills. On the plus side views are spectacular. On the down side service was barely adequate from a supercilious waiter, couldn't be bothered to wipe down table after spilling soup starter. Food was over salted crab soup, uninspiring John Dory , had to ask for the hollandaise sauce which I had ordered. Greeted by "oh I will try and move your table as you won't like the one that has been allocated" not an inspiring opening line. General opinion way too expensive for a very mundane eating experience. Would not return as view matched by many other restaurants in lyme Regis.
