A word from Hix Oyster and Fish House
Hix Oyster & Fish House overlooks the harbour in Lyme Regis and boasts the most stunning panoramic views across the Jurassic coast. This is easily one of the most picturesque spots to enjoy fresh British fish and seafood. The Fish House is an informal, light and airy dining room with simple white wooden tables and chairs with the added bonus of a large outdoor terrace. Our focus is on sourcing and serving the best produce we can find and doing as little to it as possible so that you enjoy the real flavour of great British ingredients. We cure and smoke our own salmon and grow our own herbs in the Fish House garden.
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.

Diner Reviews
  • "An excellent experinece all round. The manager and the staff couldn't have done more to create a special evening. They were attentive and helpful, but not in our faces. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. Wonderful evening and thoroughly recommended."

  • "Great restaurant . Friendly staff and good food. Would highly recommend."

  • "Stunning view on a clear sunny evening. Were dealt with promptly on arrival. The food was good. Sandeels and lobster to start, then the Huss curry and Hake for main. The curry was too hot for myself. I should have asked how how it would have been, as it surprised me. I had expected more spice flavour rather than heat. The hake was very light with buttered peas. The side of fries crisp. Dessert was gooseberry pie & clotted cream - delicious and Buttermilk and sea buckthorn, again delicious. Finished with mint tea and coffee."

  • "We arrived late (could not find a parking space and recomend park and ride) we were also 2 guests no show but we were welcomed and treated extremely well. The food was lovely and well presented, not much vegetarian choice tho. Will definately recommend and return soon."

  • "Felt waiting staff were rushing and flustered. They should try beeing more freindly and articulate."

  • "When we booked online we advised Hix that this was our wedding day/honeymoon. We were greeted by a very pleasant host, who asked had we done much today? When we replied yes we got married. His response was I know! They had taken note of our request and put us in the window as requested. After being seated we were given complimentary cocktails to celebrate our marriage. This was our first visit and we were looked after very well by a charming young man with a warm smile. He asked did we need anything explaining on the menu. The food was excellent and service with a smile. Would thoroughly recommend !"

  • "I was disappointed to be offered a table at the rear, particularly as there were two empty tables at the front. I asked to be seated on one of the tables which was grudgingly conceded. Interestingly at least one of the front tables was empty all evening until we left the restaurant at circa 21.30"

  • "The restaurant is very welcoming and food is always good. They go out of their way to accommodate the children's requests."

  • "This was for my 69th birthday .... A prior visit had been for my 60th. It takes me that long t save up! But it was worth it, from all points of view"

  • "Having been to HIX Soho many times, we were excited to go to it's Dorset cousin. It's a beautiful setting, The views were amazing and the staff great and took our order.......all good. The starters came shortly afterward, crab soup and a prawn cocktail. The presentation of both highly underwhelming. However both tasted outstanding, so we waited excitedly for the main courses, by now the place was full. We ran out of water and wine and sat like this for nearly 40 mins. When asked they said we were next after at least 5 tables who arrived after us were served. We had to ask for water and then ask for the dishes to be removed that had been on the table since we finished. Both meals were ok, nothing so good as to make us go back. A great shame."

  • "Sympathetic reception staff who were able to change my reservation from dinner to lunch and organise a window table. Service throughout was prompt and attentive without being OTT."

  • "Outstanding, we went for our 1st wedding anniversary meal and it was truly amazing. Staff were fantastic, setting perfect, food out of this world. They helped make a special day even more memorable"

  • "Lovely views over Lyme Bay, food quality good, service mainly good, one server a bit offish, rest very good and extremely helpful and forthcoming when asked about my starter and what was in the dressing. Lovely experience."
    dined on 06/07/2014
  • "We had attempted to get into the restaurant before on short notice which was not possible, so this time the table was booked well in advance. The wait was absolutely worth it. On a sunny evening we had the perfect window seat over looking the harbour which added to the visit. The service was first class, getting the right balance between discreet but attentive at the same time. The questions regarding the menu were answered with confidence and knowledge which aided our choice as to how adventurous we were. The quality of the food and presentation was of the highest quality, with locally sourced produce and the scallops were so fresh you could think that the chef nipped down to the bay to collect a few. A visit here again is a definite."

  • "It was my first time eating sea food and I thoroughly enjoyed the oyster threesome starter and the main crab dish. The waiter was very friendly helpful and made the experience easier as he explained the best way to eat the chosen foods and also he suggested what other foods would work well with the dishes. I really would like to go back as the scenery was stunning and very romantic."

  • "I took my wife here for our wedding anniversary and to try it out before our daughter and now husband were planning to go as a special post wedding dinner. We enjoyed the food - the most sophisticated whelks I have ever had - but were sat in the middle of a rather noisy room with no view of Lyme or the Cobb at all, and felt the meal was overpriced compared with many other local fish restaurants/pubs. I particularly didn't like the practice of presenting a bill with a 'discretionary' tip already added although the service had been good and informative."
    dined on 04/07/2014
  • "This was a real disappointment. The service was poor - very slow with badly trained staff. We were offered bread but had to request it twice before it turned up; the sparkling water never arrived at all, and the special cocktail we ordered took so long to make that our starters were already on the table when the waiter brought it over. Luckily they were cold, so we were able to finish our drinks first. Food in general was uninspiring, with the exception of the whole sea-bass my partner ordered, which he said was perfect. Just a shame about everything else. They obviously know that the view (which is stunning) will pull customers in, but they won't get any returning business unless they raise their game - especially at these prices."

  • "Been here before about five years ago when it seemed very good indeed, even memorable. This time more mixed, particularly because of the service and atmosphere. Very loud music was playing and we had to ask for it to be turned down. The waiting staff seemed to be from Lyme Regis' boy band. Not one for overly fussy service, but this was the opposite. Too chummy - we were the 'guys' - and we had a rotation of waiters who kept asking the same thing. The food was good, but not so much better than at the nearby hotel where we were staying (The Alexandra) that we would call it 'can't miss'."

  • "We chose this restaurant to take our daughter to, for lunch, to celebrate her 25th birthday. We were delighted that we were shown to the table in the window so that she and her partner could enjoy the lovely view over harbour. I enjoyed 3 courses of delicious fresh summer tastes, salads, new potatoes, delicately cooked mackerel and sea trout, and a miniature Bakewell tart made with loganberries. Everyone else enjoyed their choices too."

  • "We had to visit after Tom Parker-Bowls rated it highly in his column. The setting is amazing with great views of the harbour. However, I would have been dis-apointed if we had sat on the terrace as poeple were smoking very close to the dining tables. The food was well cooked, I had two small crab cakes to start which were fine (can't do alot different with a crab cake). My dressed crab was just a crab emptied onto a plate and nothing else...£14.50 and chips extra? At the end I felt if I went back to Lyme I would get the same food on the sea front but a lot cheaper. We had come from Teignmouth after eating at the Crab Shack the night before, our 2nd time, for sea food I prefered the Crab Shack. It finished £85 for two, no wine & two cokes."
    dined on 29/06/2014
  • "We had an amazing meal last Sunday. The staff were very attentive, taking note of my husband's allergies. We were allowed to relax and enjoy the lunch, and the views....not rushed through it. Fish was very fresh and cooked perfectly. Thank you!"

  • "5 of us had an evening meal. Lovely food and ambience with stunning views out to sea. Excellent service. Mackrel salad starter was fantastic. Chocolate mousse was chocolate lovers dream. Really enjoyed the whole experience"

  • "Table with magnificent view of The Cobb and Lyme Bay on a brilliant Summer's evening. Service excellent with information about specials and other aspects of the menu. Food presently expertly and with fine ingredients."
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "Both starters were very good - crab soup and crab fish cakes, both packed with flavour, but the mains were a disappointment. My fish fingers were overcooked and considering it trades on being an upmarket fish restaurant, I expected that element to be spot on. The chips were French fries, but I was expecting 'proper' chips. The minted peas and tartare sauce were also very good. My husband's fish pie was bland. Overall 7/10, but at those prices I expect at least 9/10."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "Table in window has fabulous view of the Cobb & Lyme Bay. Kitchen table is a bit Stygian."
    dined on 25/06/2014
  • "went for lunch for husband's birthday. The setting is beautiful and the staff were attentive, friendly and pleasant to talk to. The food was outstanding and they answered any questions we had about the menu which was refreshing and unpretentious. The cocktails were fab and the food incredible. Will definitely be visiting again !! You cannot visit Lyme Regis without going here."

  • "This was the second time we had eaten at Hix Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis. The first time, we really enjoyed it. However, second time around, we found the food very ordinary and overpriced. The wine list was poor (£30 for a very average Portugese red). The service was excellent, as before, but the whole ambience was more than a little pretentious."
    dined on 24/06/2014
  • "The service was friendly, professional and not in your face. The food was mediocre for the price, my wife and I had a trio of fish for two and it was just average, no crispy skin and it looked tired. The starters were OK but then they should be at the prices. We don't mind paying for good ingredients and a professional chefs know how, but this was meal was lacking both. Position of restaurant is excellent with great sea views, but had to suffer people standing next to table whilst eating taking photos out to sea! "Manners maketh man" NOT!!"
    dined on 24/06/2014
  • "We had a great evening meal for our anniversary recently, apart from the fantastic view from the restaurant, the food, service and ambience were all we could ask. We would have no problems recommending this restaurant to others and we will return."
    dined on 23/06/2014
  • "Fantastic leisurely lunch overlooking the Cobb at Lyme. Regis. Food was exceptional value for money and the service was laid back, non intrusive and most friendly. Don't be out off by the 2hr turnaround at lunch service, we certainly were not hurried. House wines were intelligently chosen and great value."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Amazing starters. Veg portions very very small. 5 tiny pieces of potatoe between 2. Complained that potatoes were waxy and hard and waiter replied "were they?" Had to ask for bread. Veg arrived several minutes after fish."
    dined on 18/06/2014
  • "Our group of 4 had a range of different courses, each person was pleased with their choice and yet jealous of others choices, serving as incentive to return. Good range of drinks tp cater for many tastes. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and prompt. No complaints in any department by any of us."
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "Great meal with my brother and his partner . The Newlyn Sole was cooked to perfection . Service was attentive but not intrusive . 2nd visit in 4 days ,our favourite place"
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "Hix always delights .Friendly and unpretentious .Service a little slow but that s not usually the case .Saturday 14th ,a member of staff short .The young man who served us was great although clearly run off his feet. Great experience ,look forward to next visit on Tuesday !"

  • "This is the second time that we have eaten here and we weren't disappointed on both occasions. It's fabulous seafood, in a wonderful location with a relaxed atmosphere."
    dined on 14/06/2014
  • " We felt it was a very "special" event for us as elderlies! You made us feel most welcome from the onset and the food and presentation just beautiful, thank you. What a fabulous view! We saw the tide coming in on the hottest day this year and were thoroughly spoilt. It's all on the hips!"
    dined on 13/06/2014
  • "We arrived and were greeted by Nick the exceptional house manager. Had pre meal drinks on the terrace with stunning view of the sea and coastline. The food was fantastic, the staff excellent and the Espresso Martini cocktails were a delight. Again I have to mention Nick who engaged so well with customers. When he let me down gently by telling me the Posset was no longer available he suggested an alternative which was superb. Cannot recommend the restaurant highly enough."
    dined on 12/06/2014
  • "Great location and building with views to match. Nothing spectacularly wrong with our meal but overall just rather disappointing all round."
