A word from Hix Oyster and Fish House
Hix Oyster & Fish House overlooks the harbour in Lyme Regis and boasts the most stunning panoramic views across the Jurassic coast. This is easily one of the most picturesque spots to enjoy fresh British fish and seafood. The Fish House is an informal, light and airy dining room with simple white wooden tables and chairs with the added bonus of a large outdoor terrace. Our focus is on sourcing and serving the best produce we can find and doing as little to it as possible so that you enjoy the real flavour of great British ingredients. We cure and smoke our own salmon and grow our own herbs in the Fish House garden.
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had heard amazing things about this place but we were ever so disappointed. Even though the place was very quiet for a Saturday afternoon, the service was terrible. There were a lot of staff standing around chatting, even though we were trying to get their attention, we felt quite ignored. We asked for bread 3 times before it was brought to us. (about 30 min wait) Another couple had just sat down after us and were given their bread immediately. We waited a long time between courses, water and wine were spilt on pouring, I eventually had to mop that up myself with my napkin as no one came back with a cloth. The food itself was average and extremely expensive. I would not recommend or return again. Sorry."

  • "We eat at the Fish & Oyster House for most special occasions. Yet again what a fabulous evening - food, wine and ambience all excellent. The food is excellent value for the quality of food. The wine list is good but the mark up is excessive compared to other similar restaurants in the area. It does mean we drink less which I suppose is a good thing! Nonetheless we'll be back!"

  • "Would have been nice to get the starter we ordered rather than the main meal as it was to be a special occasion dinner it kind of ruined the evening"

  • "Great setting, view and service. Loved the scrumpy battered oysters. The buttermilk fried cuttle fish however had far too much chili; it completely overpowered the dish. The 'dressed' crab for a main, although delicious, was not in the shell which is how we'd expected it to be served. Felt a bit shortchanged, both in quantity and presentation as a result. However the hake on a stew of peppers was absolutely fabulous and the chocolate truffles with cider brandy served with coffee were the perfect end to our meal. All in all the Hix visit was a highspot on our Devon holiday; pricey but a satisfying experience overall."

  • "Great choice of food and well presented. Very enjoyable meal. Exceptional view from the restaurant over Lyme Regis bay and Cobb. Very friendly staff and great location."

  • "This restaurant is a gem, and one of a kind in Lyme Regis. Overall I have to rate it highly - lovely food, knowledgable staff, amazing setting (overlooking the bay). The restaurant looks lovely inside and the terrace outside (where we sat with our dog) has great views. The only reason I have not rated five stars is the service began to slip during the end of the meal - we were not offered deserts (I had to ask for the menus) and I had to flag down the waiters a couple of times so they could have been slightly more attentive. Overall though I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant."

  • "As it was a bank holiday weekend I cannot really blame the restaurant. However we were on the point of having to cancel our booking as we literally could not find anywhere to park. As the standard and experience of the restaurant was good I think the owners should be considering acquiring some reserved parking of their own perhaps even valet parking. That would improve the experience no end."

  • "Lovely atmosphere and delicious food not to mention rather nice cocktails and good local wine"

  • "Extremely slow service (waited an hour and a half for our starter and the meal went on like this), no apology about this, I also felt it was slightly unprofessional service. The music being played was awful - euro house/dance music. The view was gorgeous. The oysters were wonderful, the cocktails a bit hit or miss, the food was average and over priced - £11.50 for a bowl of fries (which constituted 3 portions put together) is a bit over the top, and £6.50 for a chocolate mousse? My husband, who is a chef, advised that his steak was pretty tasteless."

  • "Kitchen very slow - 45 minutes before any food appeared after some enquiry to the reluctant staff. Ambience is one of self-satisfaction on the restaurant's part which is not warranted as far as we could see. Staff appear smug and disinterested.. We had the worst table in the place next to the slops. Food is good but not special. It's probably ok if you are local and fit the restaurant's intended "demographic"."

  • "Food very good as was the service. However cost of drinks far too high - fairly ordinary glass of house white at £7!!"

  • "Had an excellent lunch, 16th August. Lovely views, great service and wonderful food. Many thanks"

  • "Parking a nightmare, it took about an hour to park and we eventually had to park about a mile up the hill on the roadside. No spaces available in car parks. Drinks extremely expensive. Bottle of lemonade dropped over my sons shoes and my handbag (very sticky). Ordered bread, staff forgot it. Overcharged for an item that we hadn't ordered. Most unlikely that we would visit again or recommend."

  • "Considering booked table well in advance disappointed to be put right at the back and close to the door. Staff friendly although rather puzzled at the response to the request for samphire with one of the dishes. Was told that out of season. Wondered how this could be the case seen as we overheard another waiter ask another table if they would like some and also the fact that we had purchased some from the local market 2 days before. Food was very good but overall didn't feel comfortable and could not wait to leave!"

  • "Evening meal for a significant anniversary - all the staff were pleasant, helpful and efficient. We arrived a little early and we're invited to wait on the outside terrace as our table was not ready. We waited about 10 minutes beyond our booking time for our table to become vacant. Another couple had a similar but longer experience. The setting overlooking Lyme Regis harbour and bay is breathtaking. The meal was pleasant but expensive."
    dined on 11/08/2014
  • "We had a lovely evening Food was delicious .the only negative was things went a little manic for the waitress at the end of the night and getting our bill took going up to the bar as she was nowhere near us for a long time ...understaffed perhaps??"

  • "Fantastic evening brilliant service and beautiful views. Recommend booking to avoid waiting and get table with view."

  • "Second time lucky, excellent food, service with stunning relaxing views. The staff are always friendly and helpful making the meal more relaxing and the food left us wanting to come back for more. Thanks again for a great experience."

  • "We had Sunday lunch with a ten year old. Food was excellent and service polite if slightly off hand. Best fish fingers ever for our daughter. And that view........,"

  • "We had a great night celebrating a friends birthday. We had drinks on the terrace overlooking Lyme Bay which is just stunning. We were then shown to our table and the staff were very attentive and friendly. The food....was delicious and the presentation was perfect. The food was slightly expensive, as you can find freshly sourced food and fresh fish in Dorset cheaper and cooked to the same standard. But overall the experience was perfect."

  • "Went on my birthday and an effort was made to write Happy Birthday in Chocolate on my pudding plate. Webster's fish fingers which I have chosen on previous occasions were overcooked, lacking in fish content and generally disappointing. Smoked salmon was good. The special effort to provide Affogato was much appreciated. All in all a happy experience."
    dined on 06/08/2014
  • "Good food but service not great. Starters arrived before I had a chance to order the wine! Rather over priced for what it is, but food was very good."

  • "Location stunning and service energetic if a little slow from the kitchen. Menu content disappointing compared to previous visits."
    dined on 02/08/2014
  • "Great food but rather over-priced. The wine prices were exorbitant for what they were. We still had a fab time but it'll be for special occasions only going forward."

  • "Whenever we can we visit the HIx restaurant in Lyme, and it is always worth it. The varied menu, excellent presentation and service, continue to be a treat. Book early to avoid disappointment!"
    dined on 01/08/2014
  • "I was expecting a gastro experience. Smoked salmon, 4 slices of salmon on a plate, no garnish, certainly no culinary skills. My wife ordered dressed crab. The whole crab was what was expected although no bread or garnish. The dressed crab was dressed crab on a plate. no garnish, no lemon on the plate and I would dispute that it was from a whole crab as there was just enough to make a sandwich To sum the experience up I would say it was like eating in a cafe with a view. Would you expect a fine restaurant to have bottles of 'Sarsons' vinegar and 'HP' tomato sauce on show!"

  • "Excellent dinner with superb service and a wonderful view. What more do you want in life."
    dined on 30/07/2014
  • "Disappointing service in this over-heated little shed. Very few tables enjoy the view so ask if that matters to you. Waiting staff were rushed and brusque, & food was no more than average, bill was poor value for money. Much calmer, friendlier and more charming places to eat in Lyme, with better food - The Mill House in town, for example."

  • "This was our 4th visit here and I booked it as a special occasion. I was disappointed with the quality and presentation of the food some of the fish was over cooked and the monk fish was not nice. It has really put me off ever coming again."
    dined on 29/07/2014
  • "We celebrated our wedding anniversary meal there on 28/7/14. Our request for a sea view table was met so we had a superb view over Lyme Regis harbour. The staff were very attentive, food excellent, would recommend the smoked salmon and fish pie especially - Wine list slightly disappointed - but that may juts be me, seemed expensive for the liquid in the bottle. Overall a great experience but very much a treat on our budget"
    dined on 28/07/2014
  • "The setting is perfect with uninterrupted views over the harbour and the sea. It was nice to be able to site outside with a cocktail and enjoy our surroundings. However, service was slow. For the main course, two of us chose the mixed grilled fish for two at £49. This comes with a green sauce and a hollandaise sauce. We had been told that one of the fishes would be John Dory. You get two pieces each of three kinds of fish. None of them was John Dory. The sauces never came and we had to remind the waiter three times. The accompanying vegetables were also very slow in coming. I think that if four people are dining together, for the price we were paying, you can expect to be served at the same time. Cost was £182 without wine or pudding"

  • "An excellent experinece all round. The manager and the staff couldn't have done more to create a special evening. They were attentive and helpful, but not in our faces. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. Wonderful evening and thoroughly recommended."

  • "Booked the restaurant because of Mark Hix' reputation but will not repeat the experience. Food just not what you expect, very poor, agree with the recent comments by others. The service was dismal - so many staff at the door that we couldn't get through. Restaurant half full but no welcome, no warmth, long wait to be served, very long wait to have table cleared, staff not familar with menu, etc. One of those place where the staf are more important than the customers."
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "After a long drive from Wimborne, we arrived to beautiful views and a beautiful meal. Wonderful meal as usual. We will return."

  • "Great restaurant . Friendly staff and good food. Would highly recommend."

  • "Stunning view on a clear sunny evening. Were dealt with promptly on arrival. The food was good. Sandeels and lobster to start, then the Huss curry and Hake for main. The curry was too hot for myself. I should have asked how how it would have been, as it surprised me. I had expected more spice flavour rather than heat. The hake was very light with buttered peas. The side of fries crisp. Dessert was gooseberry pie & clotted cream - delicious and Buttermilk and sea buckthorn, again delicious. Finished with mint tea and coffee."
    dined on 20/07/2014
  • "We arrived late (could not find a parking space and recomend park and ride) we were also 2 guests no show but we were welcomed and treated extremely well. The food was lovely and well presented, not much vegetarian choice tho. Will definately recommend and return soon."

  • "Felt waiting staff were rushing and flustered. They should try beeing more freindly and articulate."

  • "When we booked online we advised Hix that this was our wedding day/honeymoon. We were greeted by a very pleasant host, who asked had we done much today? When we replied yes we got married. His response was I know! They had taken note of our request and put us in the window as requested. After being seated we were given complimentary cocktails to celebrate our marriage. This was our first visit and we were looked after very well by a charming young man with a warm smile. He asked did we need anything explaining on the menu. The food was excellent and service with a smile. Would thoroughly recommend !"

  • "I was disappointed to be offered a table at the rear, particularly as there were two empty tables at the front. I asked to be seated on one of the tables which was grudgingly conceded. Interestingly at least one of the front tables was empty all evening until we left the restaurant at circa 21.30"
