  • "Have been visiting this restaurant for many years the food the food the service is outstanding and the value for London too. The theatrical atmosphere is also a bonus and you never know who you may be dining with in this theatre ambiance venue............."

  • "Good service and friendly staff. Food was substandard. We were a party of four, we had 3 courses, and not one of us said their order was good. Time for someone in management to taste their own food. Strength of JA has always been it's consistency, unfortunately it now needs a revamp."

  • "We had a late booking following a visit to a theatre. We were delighted with the service and the quality of the food and will certainly return in the future."
    dined on 15/08/2014
  • "We have been coming here for years after the theater. Ownership has changed and the menu is much too heavy at 10 PM for a post theater menu. No hamburgers or chicken breast sandwiches for example. I had a roast chicken that was totally dried out and virtually inedible. Manager did not charge for it. But it was not A festive way to end a night out."

  • "Having put on the booking form that it was my son's birthday and a landmark occasion for me, we were delighted to receive a complimentary a glass of bubbly! Brilliant, attentive service and excellent food, as ever. Joe Allen's has a great ambience, whether you go for brunch, lunch, or in the evening."

  • "This was a very special evening. Just a couple of old friends - who also had a birthday and my son's Japanese girlfriend. The staff was exceptionally friendly and the menu excellent. We each had a different starter. Mine was the duck pancake, the mint soup was refreshing and the goats cheese salad was 'a bit too filling' The sea bass was everyone's favourite and the warm beans were especailly flavourfu. We all had the bitter chocolate tart which was extremely rich and delicious. Also recommend the white wine which was unusually good - neither tart nor sweet and only three pouds with the three course menu. As members of Equity we got a special reduction of 25 per cent so it was a cheap but very high class meal . Excitement and satisfaction!"

  • "This is a survivor but not the treat it once was. Whereas once you would see various actors dining and gossiping in the corners, now you're more likely to see visitors from out of town grabbing the set pre-theatre menu. Nothing wrong with it, but not worth a special visit these days."

  • "Visited on August 4th prior to evening at the theatre. Arrived in time for drink at bar first and bar tender was very personable and knowledgeable. Nice touch of a free shot of Jim Beam with first beer. Great menu with plenty of choice. Great ambience too and lovely and cool environment. Never rushed and service was great. Food enjoyed by all four of us and will definitely return . Finally . Massive thankyou to Lorna there who saved the day when we left our theatre tickets on the table. Outstanding service all round. Well done."

  • "Food very good, staff very good a little expensive but lack of pianist playing changed the atmosphere"

  • "Good food and really great service. Make sure to listen for the items not listed on the menu. I'll definitely be getting their burgers again!"

  • "A friend first took me to joe Allen.ive since recommended other friends who in turn took others! Shame no commission! The meals are a touch small as salad /veg are extra. But why? Anyway, another nice meal. We had online reminder that there is 2 hours allowed but this was ample as service speedy when many theatre diners"

  • "What's not to like about this American diner. They do great food of hearty proportions to a high standard. Fantastic for pre or post theatre and cocktails at the bar!"
    dined on 02/08/2014
  • "The service is friendly. As we arrived on of our party became unwell and had to leave so we went from a table booked for 5 to just 2. This was not a problem, we moved to a smaller table and the staff were great as was the food. The ambience is cosy and fun."
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "A group of us went to Joe Allen's on a Saturday night. The restaurant has the feel of a classic, old-school New York steakhouse (with accompanying pianist) and some of the staff seem to have the associated arrogance, but unfortunately the quality of the food just doesn't back it up. The calamari was stringy and the fillet steak was very disappointing and not cooked as requested. A real shame but I won't be going again."
    dined on 26/07/2014
  • "After visiting Joe,s I Newyork recently I thought we would check out London after many years , high standard of staff , good value menu well cooked and good value , it was late after theatre , but we were not hassled. A very professional restaurant . Jolly good show shorter than Wolf Hall ."
    dined on 24/07/2014
  • "Great meal at Joe Allen's - I would highly recommend the "secret burgers". The decor is a wonderful history of theatre and the restaurant is located right next to a couple of theatre's making this a great choice for a pre-theatre dinner / drink."
    dined on 24/07/2014
  • "Romantic atmosphere. Marvelous piano music played, old wartime hits."
    dined on 20/07/2014
  • "Down the steps into an atmosphere most unexpected! Very pleasant ambience good menu including being serenaded by a pianist"
    dined on 19/07/2014
  • "I took my brother here for his birthday, and there were three of us, three bottles of wine, and three courses, all for £200, which I thought was pretty good value considering all of us loved all of our courses. And a lovely cosy atmosphere where you don't have to be on best behaviour or talk in hushed tones!!"
    dined on 18/07/2014
  • "What a fantastic meal. Not the first, definitely not the last at Joe Allen."
    dined on 18/07/2014
  • "The marketing hype, 2-hour time-limit per booking and the menu pricing led me to expect something more special than Joe Allens turned out to be. It is only a lower mid-market popular restaurant and, as such, is over-priced. For two, the total bill was £100, including one bottle of wine for c.£25, two starters and two mains, with coffees. Service was excellent, with a warm welcome and was very attentive and well informed. Tables are rather crammed together and the basement location is a bit gloomy, or atmospheric, depending on what you seek. Food was fine, but not special."

  • "A great way to nourish yourself between a marathon theatre experience. The atmosphere and service lend themselves to the enhancement of what was a magical day."

  • "Popped in here again after many years since our last visit after Skylight at the Wyndhams. Pleasant and relaxing, good food and attentive staff."
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "Excellent service and decent food. Impressed with the atmospheric, friendly and classic lively restaurant. Good tables for two with plenty of space. Professional and efficient with the pre theatre crowd."
    dined on 10/07/2014
  • "Personally, I find the American menu at Joe Allen's a bit challenging and wouldn't rank the cuisine alongside a good Modern British/European restaurant in the same price range. However, a great burger and fries is available on request and, to my mind, it's the best in London. The ambience and service are excellent and I have no qualms about recommending this venue, particularly if you have a taste for all things American."
    dined on 04/07/2014
  • "Friendly and relaxed atmosphere with very good service. Family of four had four different main courses and all were very satisfied with their meals."
    dined on 03/07/2014
  • "Had a modest 2 course pre-theatre meal for 2. Cost £60. An attractive and conveniently located restaurant serving reasonably tasty food. But left with a feeling of being ripped off: charged separately for bread; second glass of wine (small measure)cost £2 more than first; 12% service charge was described as optional on menu but appeared on bill regardless."
    dined on 30/06/2014
  • "We have been here before, always a treat before the theatre. Well positioned, excellent service, food very good . Might like more choice for lunch menu."
    dined on 21/06/2014
  • "Heard of Joe Allen before but never got around to trying it until now. It will not be the last time I go, I really enjoyed it. Ambience is cool and relaxed, a bit dated but that is not a negative, quite the opposite. Staff are terrific, obviously selected and trained carefully to deliver a smile and engage with the customer. Food was good without knocking my socks off, but the menu is varied and I enjoyed my meal. Overall a very satisfying experience and one I will be keen to repeat, especially with my daughters who will love it."

  • "been coming since the place opened way back when never disappoints, not once in all ways"
    dined on 19/06/2014
  • "Joe Allen always has a nice buzz about it and the food is consistently good. We chose it for a post-theatre booking knowing that there would be a happy crowd of people there and we wouldn't be rushed through our meal - we were right. On this visit I tried the pulled chicken croquettes to start which were delicious."
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "This is a great restaurant with a restrained but lively ambience. Food was good and portions were good also, not too much and not too little."
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "Was looking for a place in central London to meet up with a friend; I picked Joe Allen as the most convenient and after reading the past reviews. Although my party arrived later, the restaurant was very accommodating and while my booking was for 7:15, my friend arrived at 7:45 with no questions asked. The mocktails (we were all tea-total) were tasty and the menu, while simple, had a good selection. The food came at a good pace and the stake was cooked beautifully. I would highly recommend the Joe Allen special stake sauce (usually put on the table) rather than ordering a specific sauce with the stake. It was yummy! Would definitely go there again."
    dined on 17/06/2014
  • "A warm welcome, immediate attention, great bar with skilled bar staff, good menu, changing menu and the best ambience that suits every occasion. After thirty years I still enjoy every minute of this drinking and dining experience."

  • "I have been to Joe Allen's on a number of occasions the setting is great, the food is always fantastic and the service brilliant, I can never fault the place."
    dined on 15/06/2014
  • "Joe Allen's atmosphere is lovely. Warm lighting, good old fashioned Americana. Service wise, we couldn't fault it. Shame about the food. Often wet and under-seasoned. Some dishes complete, some requiring additional sides which weren't obvious that you had to order. Sizing was very odd too. Baby Back Ribs were amazing - but an insanely huge portion, far too much for one. Meat balls in sauce were just that. A little dish of meatballs in sauce....no pasta, no fries, no rice. Pasta wasn't an option on the sides lists, we though it was a very strange main. The veal - over cooked and under seasoned and again, bereft of carbs. A slab on veal with a crumbed egg on a plate. Crab and Avacodo salad was virtually liquid -slightly spiced baby food."
    dined on 14/06/2014
  • "we had the pre-theatre set menu at Joe Allen before a show in Covent Garden. The restaurant was busy as usual with theatregoers, families and two groups. always good fun, and the a la carte menu has expanded with some new and interesting choices. Great fun and an institution."
    dined on 12/06/2014
  • "A quick business lunch from the set menu. A simple but tempting set of options for a fixed price. A great spot in the West End for lunch or for pre/post theatre meals."
