Diner Reviews
  • "From beginning to end the service was fantastic, which was a nice suprise considering the location (busy covent garden) and the type of place (casual/bar). Friendly, confident, helpful and not overbearing. The food was ace as well, the southern fried chicken crisp and tasty and the giant beef rib moist and tender. The portions appeared slightly small on arrival especially the sides (mash with gravy - not enough gravy, pulled pork beans - no actual pulled pork), but both were good flavourful sides and we were full and struggled to finish. The drinks selection was huge, as it was lunch we went for two beers from the US with the Huber premium being a great find. "

  • "Speaking to x3 members of staff, they were all polite, friendly and helpful. Exactly how a dining experience should be, but often isn't. The food lived up to the comments online and really was very good, with the BBQ sauce on the table coming in for particular praise. Will definitely be returning."

  • "Very nice service and good food in a lively setting. Not the sort of restaurant for a leisurely, slow meal, but perfectly enjoyable for a quick bite to eat."

  • "i was quite looking forward to this experience and unfortunately thoroughly disappointed. bad food, bad service and no ambiance.the only good thing was the bottled beer. there was no crisp skin on a completely overcooked and dry chicken and the southern fried potatoes where just potato quarters done in the deep frier. the pop corn shrimp was just a joke, could not even identify the shrimp. waiter could not get orders straight and forgot half the drinks. avoid this place."

  • "A great venue for family catch up with visitors from abroad. Good food and atmosphere spoiled only by trying to hustle us off the table with 5 minutes notice. "

  • "Great lively ambience, super food for young family and service was excellent. Bit pricy but it is Covent Garden. "

  • "Service was excellent, the staff were very attentive and willing to help with menu choices / recommendations. Food itself was delicious. We had southern fried chicken and the prison plate. The portion sizes were enough to finish off my brother and me and we usually have very "healthy" appetites! They have some lovely sounding deserts and milkshakes and, although we didn't try them on this occasion, we intend a return visit to do so. We liked that it was a casual venue with a good atmosphere and the music wasn't too loud to chat. Only downside was that, towards the end of the evening, the bar downstairs started playing music with a pumping bass but it wasn't a problem, just a little distracting."

  • "rude! I booked Joe's Southern Kitchen and Bar to celebrate a friend's birthday. it was a last minute rush to organise a cake for him so I brought some cupcakes along with me. Towards the end of the dinner (we were already quite full up) I asked one of the waiters if I could just have the cupcakes with the candles I brought along to be brought out. the waiter was quite rude and said that I should have called up and told them before hand and also they do desserts that they could have maybe did something for us... he didn't say it in a nice way, instead I felt like I was being told off and that I felt a bit embarrassed. I thought the service from this particular waiter was extremely poor!"

  • "Great bar and restaurant, amazing quirky food and great cocktails, really friendly staff"

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed joes southern Kitchen. The chicken BBQ beans, fries and mac n cheese was very good. I was amazed by the atmosphere of the shop and the brilliant location in Covent Garden. Being half American from Alabama I choose to go to joes to have southern food. For me however there was only one disappointment, the corn muffin wasn't a traditional corn bread muffin at all. The corn bread initially tasted like an eggy with sweet corn inside cheese scone. They really have to improve their recipe. However, their version of Southern ice tea was brilliant. So overall I would rate my experience as 10 out of 10 for service and atmosphere and 8 out of 10 for food."

  • "I was excited and intrigued by this place and booked a table for 5 on a busy Friday evening. We felt almost from the beginning of the night that little attention was paid to us, we had to get the waiters attention to order our drinks and starters which was very disappointing. We were also told once seated that our table had a 2 hour slot, something I was not told prior to booking or being seated. I was not very impressed with the food at all. I had a main of Joe's Southern Fried Chicken. The 3 pieces of chicken were nothing special and were not as hot as I would have liked, the chicken came with my choice of southern fried potatoes which tasted over spiced and dry. I was overall very disappointed with my experience."

  • "We were in a slight rush before the theatre. The waiter understood ad made sure that we were able to squeeze in a happy hour cocktail (despite being late to our booking) and the food was served very quickly. When the food came out, we were both very impressed! The buzz in the air contributed and we had a fantastic meal at a reasonable price. Simple, honest food with large portions and the staff were lovely! I would love to go back again next time I'm in covet garden! It's easy to find and good walking distance to theatres and the tube."

  • "We ordered the shrimp popcorn but it was really chewy, but we didn't say anything. But the table next to us ordered the same thing and they complaint to the restaurant and they actually brought a new appetiser to them, which was nice. I ordered the Gumbo, it was a bit bland but still ok. Staff was nice and dessert was amazing"

  • "This really isn't Southern food. The menu may sound Southern, but the way it's cooked and the way it tastes is definitely not Southern. (Why did the fried chicken taste of curry? Why was the 'gravy' on the whipped potato just chicken stock?) Ambience was nice and drinks were good."

  • "Check the menu out before you go. It all sounds lovely and could take a while if you don't :-) The Service was great from all the staff and our waitress was spot on. Each starter/snack and main course was really nice. My dish of chicken under a brick was very tame (spice wise) but looked and tasted great with the Ceaser Salad. My 13 year old loved the Prison plate. The Puddings were good value. The drinks were slightly pricey , but hey it is London. The only slight annoyance was the 12% service charged added automatically. I like to tip deserved staff and food but choose how much."

  • "We went to Joe's on a Saturday lunchtime for a birthday party. The service was very good, very attentive and a great ambience for parties as very busy with plenty of groups. Great cocktails and choices of beer for the boys. Thoroughly reccomended and would defiantley go back"

  • "The Food was good, but we had a rude waitress who tried to charge us for the table next to ours alcohol!"

  • "Booked it for a Friday night dinner for 5. The food was very nice, and I'd love to give the overall 4 stars. However, the place was so hot, it made it uncomfortable."

  • "Came again after being on Friday. Had Buber can chicken which was lovely but sides were disappointing. Service was really poor, waitress not slightly interested in serving us. If not for the service would have been another good night"
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "The decor is great, specially downstairs - we were seated upstairs and the lighting was a bit too dim, it felt like we were stuffed in a dark corner. Our server was great, friendly and efficient. I went for the breaded fried chicken as the reviews had raved about it. At £12.50 for four pieces I was expecting something amazing. Our dishes came really fast, were they just reheated? The chicken was excellent, not a scrap of grease when compared to KFC chicken. It was a bit hot and by the third leg my tongue was starting to complain as I don't do hot/spicy food very well. Overall, good chicken but a bit overpriced. Caesar salad had too much dressing and the greens were a bit chunky. Beware the 12.5% service charge added to the bill..."

  • "Really good food & friendly service. The blue plate special was amazing value. The chicken & the beans were so good. Will definitely be going back for the beer can chicken."

  • "This place is beyond YUM food!It was so good I wanted to rob the sauces! My sister recommended this place to us for my partners birthday. We firstly found it really easy to find,in a lovely part of covent garden. We first went downstairs because we was really early. We had a cocktail which was amazing, the tea pot cocktail! Then made our way upstairs had a couple more cocktails at the bar we only had one bar stool at first but the kind bar man found us 2 seats which we legged it to. He was so polite an friendly and amazing at making cocktails. Then we went to get our table we order the southern wings they were so tasty!! And then the chicken for 2! YUM YUM YUM. All I want to now say is MAKE YOUR WAY THERE!!!!! (And diet after!)"

  • "Went saturday 22nd march around 5:30pm. Firsy of all got seated up stairs in dimley lit balcony area. Could not even see the menu or what you were having it was so dark. Moved seats. Food came quickly but wasn't cooked properly then had to wait 25 mins for another lot. Ordered chicken in can..was just a few bits of chicken that can get at kfc. Small bottles of sprite for £3.00 each. I have had better meals and better value for money from kfc."

  • "This restaurant is something different to your typical restaurant as it has a large bar with large range of cocktails and it is America themed with its southern fried chicken which was very nice (a little prices for three pieces of chicken). However when the bill arrived at the end of the meal there was a compulsory 12.5% service charge added to the bill."
    dined on 23/03/2014
  • "We went to Joe's for an early dinner on a Saturday evening and it was heaving, there was a great buzz and friendly atmosphere. Service was really good, our waiter was friendly and attentive and our food and drink arrived in good time. We had the fried chicken, was delicious and melted in the mouth, it's a large portion so smaller eaters could definitely share. I'd recommend the mac 'n' cheese as a side, but you only really need one side if any. The fried potatoes were really tasty. We washed it all down with cocktails. The cocktails were competitively priced for London and Joe's added their own twists on classic."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "The food was typically American South and very nice, I would recommend the Slow cooked Brisket in chilli served with tortilla chips as a starter and the deep fried chicken was beautiful. The staff were polite and attentive at all times. my only small complaint was the 12 &1/2% service charge, I like to leave a tip of my own choosing for good service and felt unable to do this."
    dined on 20/03/2014
  • "Staff were great! Food very average and overpriced. Short rib was awful."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "Fantastic restaurant giving a wide range of Southern America food. I would recommend the soft shell crab for starter and loved the southern fried chicken marinated in buttermilk. The pecan pie was just divine to finish with. The cocktails are amazing too. We loved the atmosphere and great service. The location is ideal just the other side of Garrick street on King Street in Covent garden. If you turn left after Carluccios it's a little further Down on the left hand side. Will definitely be visiting again very soon"
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "Have been twice now for lunch and dinner. Both times I had the fried chicken wich is very tasty but some pieces on the dry side which it shouldn't be considering it is on the bone. Do not like the fries as they remind me of the last scraps left in a bag as opposed to good quality potato chips. The mac & cheese is to die for, but the corn on cob and cornbread muffins were a bit meh! Overall I would return for lunch on the blue plate special for £10 and substitute fries if possible - willing to try other stuff on menu but realise it could be hit and miss. I work in the area so good alternative to something like nandos but not sure I would say go out your way to visit . P.s service was with a smile which is always a bonus in Central London!"
    dined on 13/03/2014
  • "The food was delicious and served with a smile but the highlight for me were the amazing cocktails. I would certainly recommend this restaurant for comfort food served at great value considering the location."

  • "I have frequented Navajo Joe's for years and it was always a 'go to' place when in the Covent Garden area. The rebrand however just doesn't work for me. Whilst the restaurant is essentially the same, somehow it just isn't as good. Bar staff were amazing and very attentive, as was our waitress. Couldn't fault the service. But the menu was limited and the food just wasn't great. It was also quite overpriced for what it was. It just seems a shame, bring back the Navajo!"
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "I went for dinner here for the first time with two friends. Overall, some of the food was really good - especially the soft shell crab starter and popcorn shrimp. Both were excellent. For main course, the southern fried chicken was good but my friend ordered the burger and that was very disappointing - compared to the standard you now expect and get elsewhere. So I would suggest ordering carefully. We all commented on the service, which appeared rushed and unfriendly at times. But for a fairly cheap bite to eat, it was ok."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "If you love all American, all fried food then you must try this place. I had the coq of the week which was a fried chicken burger and the mac n cheese! I loved it all. If you like to indulge this is the place."

  • "Found this on Toptable and booked for 3 people. Plenty of availability around the time I wanted. It was good to look at the menu and have difficulty narrowing it down to what I wanted. Even the veggie options looked good! Order was taken promptly from a great waitress and food arrived in good time. All 3 of us ordered different main courses and we're looking enviously at what the others had (this isn't to imply what we had was bad, just that it all looked so good!) Will definitely go back what looking for a good meal around Covent Garden."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "Food was average and came out warm, it also offered little value for money. I had the ribs and wings which were nothing to write home about. My friends had the beer chicken which was also nothing special. Service is good and staff are friendly. We had a good night even if the food wasn't amazing..."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "Booked online and then found voucher in train station for Buy one get one free on main courses making our meal very good value for, money. I would have however, still been happy to have paid full price. The food was really good and I really enjoyed the fried chicken, my husband most enjoyed the tabasco honey that came with the chicken wings. The choice of cocktails was fantastic and we could have stayed all day trying different types. The service was good, all servers were cheerful and the service was quick. They do add 12.5% onto the bill to cover the service but remember that this is optional and you can have it removed and then leave what you want at your table, this is often better for the serving staff"
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "This restaurant used to be Navajo-Joe's and I was surprised it still looked pretty much the same. The food was ok but nothing to rave about - the popcorn shrimp had the texture that they had been defrosted and were like Thai fishcakes. Beef ribs were dry. I was really excited to go but was disappointed - it doesnt look like a diner as its too big. I wouldn't go back. Serive however was very good and the food came quickly. Our waiter was really friendly."
