A word from Khyber Indian Restaurant
Khyber is a super-chic, modern Indian restaurant on the Croydon High Street that has been serving stylish curry connoisseurs and local foodies since 1978. The cosmopolitan décor, which features polished floorboards, vanilla leather and dark wooden seats, crisp white linens and red accent lamps, provides the perfect backdrop for dates, business dining and intimate get-together. Founded by the Khalique family over 30 years ago, Khyber maintains its old-fashioned values and the service here is attentive and helpful. With its swish décor and delicious curries with an impressive wine list to boot, this restaurant has earned itself a loyal following on the Croydon dining scene and it"s wise to book your table in advanceContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "Lovely atmosphere here. The staff were all very attentive. Nothing could have been more trouble. The food menu was a little different. Was expecting the usual curry house menu-but no, it was much more of an Al-a carte menu but without the prices. It was delicious and will definitely be returning again.. "

  • "Went to this restaurant on the 4/4/14 arrived at 2000 didn't have started until 21.45 worse service that I have ever been to obviously very short staff but the food was excellent fresh very tasty"

  • "I have been to Khyber a few times to dine and they never disappoint. The service as always is great with friendly staff. The food is great with reasonable prices too. If you try it once, you'll be back!"

  • "This restaurant was recomended to me by a colleague as we wanted to go to an authentic indian restaurant for a team lunch. The service was efficient and attentive and the food was wonderful. We asked for extra spicy, sometimes you can go to Indian restaurants and all the curries can look or taste the same but Khyber every dish was fulled with distinct tastes. Very nice Friday treat! Highly recommend you will not be dissapointed."

  • "For the very first time my wife and I we had the singular experience to be the only customers at the restaurant on a sunday evening. This was due to the big storm expected in London late october. Anyway wonderful service and very good food."

  • "We had 16 people and the group were accommodated easily. Service, as usual, was attentive but not intrusive. Food, as usual, was of a high standard, fresh and hot."

  • "Had a lovely meal. My only issue was that when I checked the bill there was an extra item added that we didn't order. Always worth checking your bill to make sure it's correct. I pointed it out yo the waiter & he changed it immediately"

  • "Great food as always, family friendly. It was my son's birthday (age 10) and the staff signed and gave him a card! You can have good adult food and there are some less spicy options for the kids. Friendly and attentive staff. I've been to many curry restaurants across London and this is one of the best I've been to and just down the road!"

  • "I have been going to the Khyber for more than 35 years. The food was always good but the restaurant has not stood still. Under the ownership of Mr Khalique and latterly his son the décor and food have evolved into what is now a thoroughly modern restaurant serving the most delicious, contemporary and uniquely tasty Indian cuisine."

  • "The experience was really bad. Ordered butter chicken, was served chicken tikka masala. Waited 20 mins for somebody to attend to us to give the menu card. After we asked for the bill, nobody came back. Finally half hour later we had to get up and go to the counter to pay. Will never be going back."

  • "A smart indian restaurant offering tasty food from a non-standard menu."

  • "With the Toptable offer, we had two main courses (risotto, and giant prawns) and two desserts (two delicious kulfi) and a bottle of SA chenin blanc and still paid less than £50 including service. On this Friday evening they were very busy and new customers were waiting to use our table as we finished. Quite a buzz. Several new staff since our previous visit"

  • "Having read the reviews on the Khyber restaurant we were expecting something pretty special and were not disappointed. The visit to the restaurant was for a family meal for six. The food was excellent and with the great service, we had a thoroughly enjoyable time. I would recommend the Lamb Shank Rogan Josh, very tender and absolutely delicious."

  • "The best Indian restaurant we have ever been to. We travel from Scotland to come to this restaurant and have been visiting for many years now and make a point of having at least one meal here each time we visit. Russell the host is fabulous and the food absolutely outstanding."

  • "My hubby and I have been going to the Khyber for almost 25 years. It has gone from strength to strength. It is now no longer "just" an Indian restaurant, but a beautiful dining experience. The owners (Mr. Khalique, Russell Khalique et al) and the staff are lovely people and always make us feel welcome. All of their dishes are now made without using Ghee, so are healthier. They have a great separate vegetarian menu if you want a very special Indian meal, I cannot recommend the Khyber highly enough."

  • "It was my third time dining at the restaurant and I was not disappointed. The quality of the food is as good as ever and everyone in the family loved their choices. Meat is very tender and succulent, fish was cooked to perfection. Ideal place to celebrate a special occasion, the staff is very attentive and courses are served at a good pace. Would highly recommend!"

  • "We went as a party of 6. The food was of a very high standard. We ordered a wide variety of dishes and they were consistently good. The service was efficient and friendly. Altogether a really good evening. The prices were a little higher than a typical curry house but well worth it as the standard of the ingredients and food presentation was so high."

  • "Still a good curry and certainly well worth a visit but the Khyber is not what it once was. It was fairly early Saturday evening and the restaurant was very busy, so what do I know! We choose the meat and fish platter starters which I have to say were good. My wife then had some citrus based chicken curry which she enjoyed whilst I had the Beef Madras. This is where, in my opinion, things took a turn for the worse. In previous visits this was a superb Madras without reproach, a rich unctuous sauce with large tender pieces of beef that melted in the mouth. Unfortunately the one served to me on Saturday was a pale imitation of madras' of old, small rather tough cubes of beef that did not look or taste particularly appetising."

  • "Excellent dining experience. Extremely hygienic. Great Food. Great Service."

  • "4 of us enjoyed a lovely meal at The Khyber last Saturday. My friends had been there before but it was the first time for me. It is so nice to find an Indian restaurant that has some alternative food to the typical curries we see on every Indian menu elsewhere. The 2 for 1 offer from toptable made it a real bargain to get such nice food at a great price. The food was presented well and the service was good. Will go again."

  • "Great service and the food was very yummy ....great value too, would definitely recommend :-)"

  • "Having eaten here on a number of occasions I was hugely underwhelmed by the food this time. The popadom sauces were utterly tasteless. My starter was the lamb, which was beautiful, but the main of chicken jalfrezi was not up to par. The lentil side was beautiful, but the other was just bland. My wife had bhajis, which was good, followed by a rather routine chicken tikka masala & rice. She left the majority of her main, as she said she felt no real compulsion to eat it. The service was as usual very good, but VFM? No, not on this occasion, not close."
    dined on 08/08/2013
  • "The food was of the same quality, but the service was terrible (we were left without being attended and weren't event asked if we wanted puddings or teas/ coffees). Although the manager did turn it around just at the very last minute, just enough to perhaps try once more. But this restaurant has gone down hill progressively in the last couple of years, it's a shame as it was one of our favourites."

  • "We come here several times a year and this was a July Saturday evening. Whereas we would normally expect it to be packed, it was less than half full. The menu has not changed for a long time and it may be customers are starting to want to try some different dishes. I had the lambshank which was well cooked and fell off the bone. My wife the fish. Both come with lots of rich sauce. We finished with the tea-cup kufi which makes a refreshing end to the meal. The Chilean sauvignon blanc at £13 was good value. Once the Toptable discount was applied, we paid inc service the very modest amount of £40."

  • "Lovely freshly made starters - both the Tempura Squid and the Crab & Cod Cake were delicious. Then a fabulous seafood biryani, with a generous sprinkling of crispy Calamari as a bonus. My partner was equally enthusiastic about her Chicken Chettinad & portion was large enough top warrant the doggy bag. With the 2 for 1 offer on starters and main courses, this was a really good deal & meal. Definitely worth a return visit - some unusual and really interesting menu options left to try."

  • "We were, we did and we really enjoyed it. The food was great (good value too) and the staff exceptionally kind and helpful; locating and giving us directions to a late-night pharmacy and holding our meal so one of our party could get some hay-fever medicines for his son who was really suffering after a day at Wimbledon! We will certainly visit the Khyber again when we are next in Croydon and we'd reccomed you to visit it too!"

  • "Once again we had an excellent meal at Kyber where the attentive waiters and delicious food were a real treat, whllst the ambience is friendly and the decor fresh and clean with sparkling table settings."

  • "Food was excellent, very tasty and a good deal of choice, fish, meat and vegetarian. With the deal made it very reasonable."

  • "Having been here before, took my parents for dinner when they came to visit. Really good starters, the Chicken Tikka 3 Ways went down a treat. A couple of the curries were commented on as nothing special, but I had the rack of lamb again, and it really is an outstanding dish and I really recommend it. Generous amount of lamb, nicely spiced and the goes perfectly with the pumpkin mash. Fab Grunervetliner wine to go with it all as well. I will definitely return for an easy after work option."
    dined on 13/06/2013
  • "I've been here before, but a toptable special offer of 2 for 1 on starters and mains makes it really good value, and close enough to home. Service great, food delicious and good varied choice on the menu. They do have traditional curry choices on the menu but plenty for those who wish to be more adventurous. Definitely recommend."
    dined on 23/02/2013
  • "The food in the Khyber again is very good and we would suggest you give it a try. Modern décor with great food."
    dined on 06/06/2013
  • "Took advantage of half price offer on starters and mains. My wife is South Asian and she was really impressed with the quality of the food presented. She was even pleasantly surprised by the accompaniments to the poppadoms, which were very different to your run of the mill curry house. The starters were beautifully prepared. I went for the goat biryani main, which was exceptional. I really enjoyed my mango crème brulee dessert. Portions were very generous and the waitress offered to pack our unfinished mains. All told 2.5 courses each, one cup of green tea and a bottle of wine came to £50 (including service), after discount. I'd be very surprised if you could find better value for money locally."
    dined on 08/06/2013
  • "I have always loved the food here. But last Sunday was disappointing, goat was variable whereas I had always found superb! And the menu is getting a little tired."
