A word from L'Escargot
Set in the heart of Soho L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites.
Now under the new ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants. Oliver Lešnik , formally of The Connaught and The Cadogan Hotel, heads up the kitchen. Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list.

The experience was everything I thought it would be. Meticulous attention to every detail all our food choices from our starters to desert were all outstanding. The wine list was well chosen with a wide range of great wines to choose from. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful.Made a special occasion, perfect. Would definitely revisit.

Trouble free booking through the Opentable system so when we arrived they were aware of one guests allergy requirements. Very attentive service and we allowed plenty of time ( 1.75 hours) for our lunch before going to the Prince Edward theatre just around the corner. The food was good but expensive but as it was a special occasion for us we took in our stride. Will probably return on future theatre visits.

The departure of Marco Pierre White has resulted in the quality of the food at L'Escargot plunging to unimaginable depths. It was not surprising that on a Friday lunchtime the place was nearly empty, not a situation when the great MPW was in charge. We had the fixed price menu. Two of us had French onion soup and the third Caesar's salad, not exactly demanding dishes to make. The soup had so much sugar in it as to be cloying and the salad had so much salt in it as to be at stroke proportions. This continued to the main course of Toulouse sausages which were so over salted as to be inedible. The Maitre D was gracious enough to concede that the cooking was terrible and halved our bill. What a fall from grace!

We arrived a little early as the walk from the theatre was quicker than expected. The staff had the table ready and were sitting down around 20 minutes before our booked time. This was probably due to there were only the two of us. Staff were attentive and the food was excellent. I will use the restaurant again.

We were celebrating a special birthday and wanted a memorable dining experience before seeing Miss Saigon. We couldn't have been happier! Service was terrific from our Italian waiter. The food was great and pretty good value for what is a really lovely 'theatre land' environment. We'd certainly go back another time. Moules/frites was spot on!!

Our waitress had a poor command of English. It took 10 minutes for her to grasp that one of us wanted the salad with the poached egg and another wanted it without. We had 2 orders of cassoulet as mains. She brought one and then asked "who ordered the beouf bourginon?" Nobody had. So three of us ate our mains before they got cold, while my husband waited 15 minutes for his cassoulet. Then they brought some chips and asked who'd ordered them. Nobody had, so they took them away. They got the bill all wrong. But the worst part of it was the ladies' lavatory. Both toilets were broken, full of stuff, and unflushable. The waste basket was overflowing. Nobody had serviced that room in a long time! We won't be going back any time soon.

We visited L'escargot for a pre-theatre meal and their booking and pre-meal customer service was impressive. They understood the need to meet our time pressures and met all our expectations. The meal itself was excellent value and the staff very polite and efficient. I would recommend L'escargot to anyone.

This has been a pre theatre 'haunt' of ours for years, and unfortunately we found the recent changes not for the better. The ambience has become darker, and the menu is not nearly as good. Our waitress was difficult to understand and the Sommelier appears to have disappeared completely. Food was ok although the beef in my steak sandwich was cold, and the additional charges for vegetables was I thought, a bit steep. The pre theatre (set) menu had nothing that took our fancy, so we were forced to go A' La Carte.

I have previously dined at this restaurant twice over the past 2 years. The food, wine and service was superb, so by reputation alone we booked again for last Saturday evening. What a disaster. It was an 8pm booking and our table was not set, only two tables were being in use so our table changed from 6 to 9 then 11.The starters were acceptable, but it was all downhill after that. My wife had half a lobster on a plate. That was it. My friends wife's fish was ok Both my friend and I had ribeye steak, medium rare. It turned up barely medium, the f rench fries arrived 10 minutes afterwards. The sweet course was dry and when we ask for cream it was refused. Two Liqueur coffees were served in different size glasses, and a scrap behind the bar.

Business lunch for 2 during the week. Both opted for the snails and mushrooms to start. For mains we choose a special each (£20 each); partridge and duck with shared sides of spinach, fries and runner beans (c. £5 each). Food was very good and service attentative and alert. 2 bottles of red (Cotes du Rhone @ £32 per bottle). Total bill was £161, including service. I wouldn't say it was value for money, but equally the food is of a good standard and you're right in the middle of Soho so no surprises. Lively atmosphere in the main dining room with all tables full. Good venue for a business lunch or romantic pre/post theatre visit with their tailored menu. The venue definitely has some charm about it, Classic French / traditional English.

Menu consists of items one expects to see i.e no surprises (nothing wrong with that). We were seated in the "front" room which is excellently furnished. One can have bread; wine glass refilled; a pudding menu; coffees etc if one asks them. The staff do nothing without being asked. Prior to our starter arriving we were presented with main courses. We explained they weren't ours. Without uttering a word the waiter just wandered off to find their owners. It is irritating when the wine and ice bucket are 3 m distant from the table unless there is staff to replenish the guests wine glass. The food was of a consistently high quality. This is a great restaurant if one wants to have conversation as there is no background music.

The ambience was great for a romantic birthday celebration with my husband and it was matched by the quality of the food which was delicious unfortunately however both the starter and the main course my husband chose were tiny. The whole lobster main course at £32 was particularly bad value, for that price one would not expect such a small lobster or for it to be served without lobster claws.

L'Escargot was always one of my favourite restaurants - then it changed hands and was a massive disappointment. So I was so pleased to see the publicity saying it had changed hands again and was restored to its former glory. Not true - the service was non existent - 3 times I had to ask for the wine I'd ordered with my starter before it begrudgingly arrived. My starter the chilli crab was not good and my husband's terrine no better. The restaurant was only half full but we were put on a noisy table at the back when other far better tables were available. My main course - rib eye steak was inedible - true the cost was taken off the bill but no apology offered - I left the restaurant hungry.

What a great evening. We arrived early for our reservation but it was not a problem for the restaurant, they seated us right away. All of the wait staff were very attentive and polite and we were very pleased with the service we received. Food was delicious, well portioned, and the menu variety was perfect. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling to London, especially if you're going to a theatre show. Try the mussels.....Mmmmmmm!!! We will return again the next time we're in London.

We went pre theatre for saturday lunch. The menu was different to that on the internet which made it hard to choose. The ladies toilet was upstairs and we were with a wheelchair lady. The cod appeared to have some sort of meat in the lentils but it was unidentifiable and I am a non meat eater. This was not mentioned on the menu. We all felt slightly unwell the rest of the day. Luckily the theatre was amazing which rescued the afternoon! Definately would not go back

I booked lunch to celebrate a special birthday as I have had several excellent meals at L'Escargot over past years. I wish I'd done my homework about recent management/ownership changes as I was desperately disappointed and sadly this is no longer my favourite central London restaurant. Seats were not comfortable, no table cloths, apparently redecorated, flimsy paper menu, all forgivable if the food is superb... but menu lacked exciting choices (excepting the special starter of snail and mushroom on toast which was superb) ... presentation generally was plain, the plates lacked any "drama" and the whole meal should have felt special but fell way short of expectations.

Great location and venue despite the chronic shortage of parking options nearby. Unfortunately the evening started off badly when the lobster and advocado starter ordered by both of us was found to contain only 3 small pieces of lobster. This was raised with the waiter and thankfully quickly remedied. The wine list is impressive catering for all tastes and budgets. The ribeye steak main dish was absolutely delicious and merited a 'compliment to the chef' to be sent to the kitchen. Overall my partner and I enjoyed the dining experience very much despite the occasional tardy service from the waiters, who seemed to be rather thin on the ground. Definitely recommended. Will definitely be making a repeat visit..

An excellent choice, with a varied menu suited to the (gourmet) tastes of children aged 10 and 7 years - featuring lobster and mussels ! This was the second time that I had eaten in L'Escargot inside a fortnight. The consistency of the cooking was laudable and I found it to be a "little piece of Paris in London". Attentive service coupled with a friendliness often missing in central London restaurants. As a non meat eater I found the seafood and fish to be delightful, the wine list less so. The tables are far enough apart to be able to conduct conversation without losing one's voice, and best of all there is no music to be heard. I would recommend this restaurant, even if on the night I attended it was nearly so lively as the lunchtime visit I made a week or two earlier. One of my favourite Soho restaurants. LM

Revisited after 25year gap. Used to be a favourite in London and had hoped for a special night for our wedding anniversary. Service was excellent and a small table at the front provided a pleasant ambiance. Food however could be best described as average. We however did chose most expensive items on menu with escargots and rib eye steak which were unexciting but did notice that the fixed price menu at only17pounds for 2 courses seemed excellent value and we probably made the wrong choice.
