A word from L'Escargot
Set in the heart of Soho L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites.
Now under the new ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants. Oliver Lešnik , formally of The Connaught and The Cadogan Hotel, heads up the kitchen. Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list.

L'Escargot was always one of my favourite restaurants - then it changed hands and was a massive disappointment. So I was so pleased to see the publicity saying it had changed hands again and was restored to its former glory. Not true - the service was non existent - 3 times I had to ask for the wine I'd ordered with my starter before it begrudgingly arrived. My starter the chilli crab was not good and my husband's terrine no better. The restaurant was only half full but we were put on a noisy table at the back when other far better tables were available. My main course - rib eye steak was inedible - true the cost was taken off the bill but no apology offered - I left the restaurant hungry.

What a great evening. We arrived early for our reservation but it was not a problem for the restaurant, they seated us right away. All of the wait staff were very attentive and polite and we were very pleased with the service we received. Food was delicious, well portioned, and the menu variety was perfect. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling to London, especially if you're going to a theatre show. Try the mussels.....Mmmmmmm!!! We will return again the next time we're in London.

We went pre theatre for saturday lunch. The menu was different to that on the internet which made it hard to choose. The ladies toilet was upstairs and we were with a wheelchair lady. The cod appeared to have some sort of meat in the lentils but it was unidentifiable and I am a non meat eater. This was not mentioned on the menu. We all felt slightly unwell the rest of the day. Luckily the theatre was amazing which rescued the afternoon! Definately would not go back

I booked lunch to celebrate a special birthday as I have had several excellent meals at L'Escargot over past years. I wish I'd done my homework about recent management/ownership changes as I was desperately disappointed and sadly this is no longer my favourite central London restaurant. Seats were not comfortable, no table cloths, apparently redecorated, flimsy paper menu, all forgivable if the food is superb... but menu lacked exciting choices (excepting the special starter of snail and mushroom on toast which was superb) ... presentation generally was plain, the plates lacked any "drama" and the whole meal should have felt special but fell way short of expectations.

Great location and venue despite the chronic shortage of parking options nearby. Unfortunately the evening started off badly when the lobster and advocado starter ordered by both of us was found to contain only 3 small pieces of lobster. This was raised with the waiter and thankfully quickly remedied. The wine list is impressive catering for all tastes and budgets. The ribeye steak main dish was absolutely delicious and merited a 'compliment to the chef' to be sent to the kitchen. Overall my partner and I enjoyed the dining experience very much despite the occasional tardy service from the waiters, who seemed to be rather thin on the ground. Definitely recommended. Will definitely be making a repeat visit..

We chose "'L'Escargot" as the venue to introduce our two grandchildren to French cuisine. An excellent choice, with a varied menu suited to the (gourmet) tastes of children aged 10 and 7 years - featuring lobster and mussels ! A very capable and friendly waiter who provided excellent insight into some of the less well known wines on the list. Overall an excellent experience !

A beautiful restaurant with very modestly priced menu. The food was delicious. We went for the 3 course set menu and were allowed to even change some of the dessert off the set menu to something else. We were not rushed during the service. Excellent value for money.

Revisited after 25year gap. Used to be a favourite in London and had hoped for a special night for our wedding anniversary. Service was excellent and a small table at the front provided a pleasant ambiance. Food however could be best described as average. We however did chose most expensive items on menu with escargots and rib eye steak which were unexciting but did notice that the fixed price menu at only17pounds for 2 courses seemed excellent value and we probably made the wrong choice.

The beautifully decorated front room was perfect for a pre-theatre dinner where 4 of us started out as the only guests - not too big and not too small, it had character and ambience which intensified as the room filled up with guests. The food on the set menu was excellent and the best I've had on a set-menu for some time.

It was so pleasant to return after a 20 year gap, prior to which I was a regular. I am certainly going to be so in the future if only because its service is first class. It was backed up by good food, reasonably priced wine and a pleasant ambience. I will certainly be recommending to friends. To top it all my wife enjoyed our lunch and she is difficult to please.

Unpretentious The menu was uncomplicated and suited the bistro atmosphere. The service was friendly and quite quick. The waiting staff are accustomed to pre-theatre deadlines and are considerate in this regard. I wouldn’t use this restaurant if wanted an ‘event dining’ occasion but ideal for a reasonably priced, friendly get together.

This was a first visit for over five years and was a delight and four of us had lunch to celebrate the birthday's of my wife and daughter. My daughter and her husband are vegetarian - often a challenge for French chef's but proved not to be a problem at L'Escargot. My son-in-law and I both chose the Gazpacho which proved to be an excellent choice. Main courses were equally good, my plaice fillets were delicious although I am not so keen on the accompanying pistou. The Cod, organic Chicken and Beetroot Risotto were all polished off with gusto. This was a lovely, leisurely family lunch in a very friendly restaurant. It was quite busy and as a result the atmosphere was one of energy and fun. Highly recommended.

I hadn't been to L'Escargot for at least a decade, if not longer. I always remember it being a better place to go than to eat, although there was never anything wrong with its cuisine. But this week was as great a surprise as I have experienced in London in years. I enjoyed the finest meal I have had in the UK in 2014, in an intimate room, attended upon by kind and helpful service. I stuck with fish, which was nothing short of excellent, with a white wine list of which L'Escargot can be proud. The set-price lunch represented (for London) excellent value for money and I should have no hesitation in returning to this fine Soho restaurant instead of wandering past it and remembering its glory days of the 1980s. My wife is a fan of Escargot so we sort out this restaurant specifically for this reason. The Snails were lovely according to her, but I thought the menu overall was a little light and there was no Foiei Gras, which I though was odd for the oldest French Restaurant in London. Its an ok restaurant, would I hurry back, no, unless the wife wants snails again next time we are in London.

We booked this restaurant for our wedding anniversary. We had 3 courses each with a bottle of red wine. Although slightly pricey, (at £140) we loved every mouthful & the wine was devine! There was only one other table of diners so we nearly had the whole restaurant to ourselves! Our meal was relaxed and unrushed, although we felt the staff could have been more attentive. When we arrived we waited at the front desk to be greated like stated on a sign, after a couple of minutes we decided to walk in ourselves & found all of the waiters stood around the bar area talking, we were right on time for our dinner reservation so they knew we were arriving. We asked for water twice before we received it and we waited forever to order our desserts.

After a superb meal in May upstairs just before the new ground floor dining room opened we had looked forward to our return. I was served the worst lobster and avocado salad i have ever eaten, smothered in garlic killing any taste of lobster and avocado and could not finish it! What is the point of hiding the delicious flavours of lobster and avocado so crudely? They did cancel the item on our bill. The veal chop and courgettes were OK but the new potatoes were less delicious than before. The truffle risotto was poorly made; not a delicious smooth rich feast but un-blended and no substance. A jug of tap water was warm on a hot evening As one of the owners was there we told him our thoughts!" We shall not be returning.

Our first time since the restaurant has changed owners. Overall it was OK but not as good as before. Tablecloths have gone, so your lovely crusty bread sits on the table surface as no side plates. Forks laid upside down with tines downwards. Our white wine had not been stored in a cooler and was room temperature or barely below for the first 20 mins. The food itself was delicious, the service OK but not great; I would go back to check it out and give them a second chance; the new menu is much much better than before.

A wonderful evening at L'Escargot, as usual. In our 15 years together, it's one of our favourite restaurants in London that we keep returning to for those special occasions. This visit was to celebrate our 10th anniversary which I mentioned in my booking in hopes of getting a 'special' table. It was such a nice surprise to not only get that but glasses of champagne on arrival and madelines with 'Bon anniversarie' written on the plate for dessert. Needless to say the service was brilliant, the food exquisite and atmosphere enjoyable. It may not be the 'new & trendy' kid on the block but sometime spending time with a trusty old friend is just what you need, like going home for a big friendly hug.

I had picked L'Escargot as the location for a romantic meal for my Girlfriend and I. Having never been to the restaurant it was choosen for two main reasons. Firstly the menu appear fantastic and had a large number of dishes containing truffle. Secondly I was able to book a good table (for two) on the Thursday before the event. Located in the heart of Soho l'Escargot defiantly retains a certain amount of the 'Old Soho' gregarious charm. The decoration of the restaurant is is of dark, almost bloodish, red and dark green. Mirrors adorn much much of the wall not covered by framed paintings. We were seat next to the window in the front room (a table I recommend any would be couple request). ran out of space

Having walked past L'Escargot a thousand times it was time to dine there, and our anniversary seemed like a good occasion to go. It was a friday night, the restaurant was very quiet. The l'escargot were ok, comforting garlic butter but not that much flavour in the snails. I had steak for main and frankly wish id chosen something else as it wasn't great, my wife had the lobster and loved it. We took up the OT offer of a free bottle of wine-having been told the options by the waiter i opted for the Cotes du Rhone which arrived as a white wine, to my surprise. This may be my ignorance, but i am used to CdR being red, and as id ordered steak might have appreciated being told that it was white. There are better French restaurants around...
