A word from Light Restaurant & Bar
The Light Bar and Restaurant occupies a former power station commission by the Great Eastern Railway company in the late 1800s to provide electrical lighting to Liverpool Street Station. The building retains many of its original features including exposed brickwork, timber and some of the original lifting mechanism.
It opened in its present form in 2000 to great acclaim. Our main bar has a capacity of 300 serving from an extensive bar menu. Adjoining this bar is our 60 cover restaurant offering a full International a la carte menu as well as daily 2 course special menus from only £10.00.
The upper mezzanine Lounge bar is available for private hire (Sun – Thurs) with a capacity of up to 200 people. As well as fully stocked bar, canapé menu and a DJ booth it also has its own private roof terrace. On Fridays and Saturdays we open this room as an informal members bar.
We also have a large courtyard for drinking or al fresco dining beneath a canopy adjoining the restaurant.

I used top table to book a dinner for two with my girlfriend. Only to find the restaurant was being used for a private function. My girlfriend and I both work long hours so it was a rare treat. I asked to see the manager who just said 'sorry nothing he could do ', most likely not his fault but he was acting like he was annoyed, and that we were clearly wrong. I was most disappointed in top table, it's a generic service that needs to be double checked.

Went for lunch - food was standard. They take 50% off the bill for gourmet society card holders which was nice. I would come back during the evening as it seems like a cool bar/lounge.

Had a friend coming from France , choose the restaurant because it looked interesting and was in shoreditch which usually is a good location for trendy restaurants. the service was amazing, waitress really attentive and the food was amazing as well, i would probably say a bit pricey but using the tastecard with 50% off was a definite bonus, will definitely go again if affordable.

Food was very good and great value with the 50% off. We had quite a late booking on a friday so the bar next door was teaming and v loud whilw the restaurant was quite empty. However food was great and had a great time. £85 for two courses and a bottle of wine fo four people.

The food here is good if you can get past the fact that when you leave, you and everything you're wearing will smell like you've spent the whole evening in the kitchen cooking along side the chef. The service is slow and poor for the size of the restaurant. And the Eton Mess was more squirty cream than anything else. Not a difficult desert to get right. Disappointing.

Very enjoyable meal, the food was great and very well presented. The staff were also very helpful. My only criticism was both myself and my partner having to have our bags searched and body frisked was a slightly unwelcoming entrance to an otherwise great restaurant.

The menu sounds quite impressive and the prices lead you to believe you're in for a top quality meal. Unfortunately the reality is somewhat different! The scallops (plural) I ordered for a starter turned out to be a scallop (singular) sliced to give the impression of several scallops. At £8.50 this is nothing short of a rip off! The sauce was virtually tasteless. The mains we ordered were also very bland and very expensive. I wouldn't mind paying £17 for a haddock and spaghetti dish if it turns out to be delicious. It wasn't. The kitchen seemed to be swarming with chefs. Not sure what they were all doing! This is one of the poorest meals I have had in London in 4 years. By all means, pop in for a drink, but please eat elsewhere! "

  • Restaurant an afterthought to bar
    JoyMarie
    Dined on 2/2/2013
The atmosphere was nice, the service good, pricing ok, but the food was disappointing. Not bad, but I would not go back. The bar, however, seemed like the place to be! It was already busy by 7:30 PM on a Saturday evening. Unfortunately, this really made the restaurant feel like an afterthought to the bar. It was extremely off-putting to have to wait in a security queue, have my bag and person searched, to be asked to provide ID to enter the restaurant at 7:30 PM, and to have to wait in a long queue to use the ladies room as the restaurant and bar share facilities.

The restaurant is located in a decommissioned power station, hence it is spacious with very high ceilings. Every time I have been it was not too crowded and allowed a quiet conversation. There is an arty, young and modern atmosphere to it, which is very suitable for informal business or friendly lunches. The food is simple but good and the set menu (£13 for two courses) represents very good value. Only drawback, the place is not so easy to find despite being on the main street, because it does not look like a regular restaurant. Make sure your date understands where it is.

We dined at Light in Shoreditch on a summery Friday evening. The restaurant is a lot quieter than the courtyard or bar area once you get through securuity and the throngs of people. Very good value Chateau Batailley with the meal. Good selection of starters and mains - well-cooked and beautifully presented - made it a really good evening out.

Having got through the ordeal at the door (the abrupt bouncers searching your belongings and demanding ID). We made it through the packed bar to find ourselves in a surprisingly empty restaurant. The staff were lovely though the restaurant lacked any atmosphere. We looked at the menu and didn't fancy any of the food on the 2 courses for £12.50 so we went with the a la carte menu. My partner went for the lamb and I had the plaice. We both had the same thoughts when the food arrived though.... Tasteless, bland and a very small portion. It wasn't worth the 17 odd pounds for a tiny plate of unseasoned food. Needless to say we didn't stick around for dessert and instead took ourselves to the next restaurant down to fill our hungry tummies.

As a large group, we had to pre-order our food with The Light Restaurant three days in advance. This was very well done, they had prepared name badges with everyone's menu choices ready for us on arrival. Unfortunately, when they were bringing out the food they had forgotten all of our side orders and ended up double charging us for the desserts. Otherwise, the service was fine if at times a bit moody. The food was great though!

Distinctly average. Even with the discount, I thought the food was overpriced. It was on Valentines day, but it wasn't exactly rammed, there were about 4 other tables. First, one waitress came back 15min after we ordered to "double check" if our orders had gone through as she wasn't sure. The other waitress then waited until just before our steaks were being brought out to tell us that it didn't come with anything and would we like to order a side dish to go with it. The dessert wasn't great.

The Light has become our client restaurant of choice. Good food, good wine, and never crowded. We have got to know the waiting staff, all 3 of them, very well, and they are all good. The £12 lunch special for two courses is amazing value. If you eat a la carte, the Taste card 50% discount is wonderful value. I just do not know why it is not more popular at lunch time.

We were the only people in for lunch, a party of four, and even then our useless, couldn't be less bothered waiter contrived to disappear behind his obviously more interesting laptop for extended periods. Quite embarrassing with guests to have to keep waving at him for service when we were the only people there. Good food, nice place, but dire. I hope it gets a good shakeup

Lunch at the Light Restaurant and Bar in Shoreditch High Street yesterday. Lovely venue but the advertised lunchtime special menu was not available and the waitress had been instructed not to allow restaurant guests to order from the bar snacks menu. The place was empty. Eventually we were allowed to order large salads which were OK but nothing special. Money and bureaucracy seemed more important than good food and happy customers here. Disappointing.

My partner and I booked here due to location. We had to get to the O2 so only had 40 minutes to eat here, which is unfortunate as the food was lovely and I would certainly have enjoyed a longer stay. We booked the first sitting at 6.30pm, explaining to our waiter that we had to be gone by 7.10pm. They were very accommodating and we were out the doors bang on 7.10pm.

Light Bar - beautiful setting inside, fabulous food, though my friends who had the wasabi cod disagreed with their choice. The chicken I had was really tasy, one of the best I've eaten! Presentation was marvellous, only downside was the service was extremely slow even though it wasn't too busy. Despite that, I would definitely go there again.

Modern and vibrant bar scene, yet enough quiet in the restaurant to have a proper conversation without shouting or even raising your voice. The service was very good, and (with other tables open) never rushed our intentionally very slow meal. Food was delivered quickly, and the waitress was always attentive. Decent but not outstanding wine list. And of course, the food...very nicely presented, and very well prepared. The scallops had spent a trifle too long under lamps, but the glazed lamb rump was great. Not quite gourmet, but if you want a happening place that also serves rather decent food, Light does not disappoint.

We had a wonderful time at the Light Bar & Restaurant and were very impressed on our first visit! We have been twice since in a short amount of time and have fallen in love with the place! The building has such character and this really adds to the atmosphere; unfortunately we didn't get to go on the balcony so unable to comment on scenic view, but this is something we hope to see soon! The contrast in atmosphere and noise level between the restaurant and bar is just right. We were able to enjoy a quiet meal with some background music in the restaurant,I must add the food was superb; then we sat in the bar for the rest of the evening and enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere and upbeat music. Watch out - we will become regulars!!
