A word from Marcus - formerly Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley
After an extensive refurbishment the former Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley has reopened as Marcus. The new ‘look’ exudes cool sophistication; a carefully considered blend of timeless elegance, clean, classical lines and a refined colour palette, providing a fresh, inviting and relaxed backdrop for Marcus and his team to thrill and enchant their guests. Marcus remains at the helm, working closely with Head Chef Mark Froydenlund. The essence of the food has been retained but has been updated. The menus deliver modern European food with a British influence and are characterized by the finest produce, exacting execution and creative flair. . Relaxed formality is the order of the day and is no more apparent than in the service, led by Restaurant Manager Daniel Greenock, which strikes the perfect balance between being engaging, knowledgeable, and passionate whilst also being attentive yet unassuming. I'm sure many of us plebians do save up to dine here but I felt like the "amazing service" I had heard about was not showered onto me. Delicious food but to the average person I think you can find better (or close) for much much less."

  • "This was a treat for my husband. We were greeted well & shown to our table which had an overview of the whole restaurant which is beautifully decorated. Choices on menu were varied & interesting. My husband had the pork which I thought looked very fatty but he enjoyed it. We both enjoyed our choices very much. As always in these high end restaurants it is hard to find a wine that is not too expensive. I did not feel comfortable to ask the sommelier for advice. Overall we had a very good evening."

  • "Marcus was a birthday treat for my wife and it did not disappoint. We both had the 8-course tasting menu, which was superb – it builds the pallet up with the starters, culminating in a fantastic poached lamb dish, then brings it back down with a sweet savoury course to finish with some great deserts. We also got a bonus chocolate cake course as we were celebrating. Staff were extremely attentive and would recommend the matching wine if you have not been before. Not cheap, but not that is to be expected given the location, level of service and preparation time and detail that clearly goes into all of the food. Would highly recommend for a special occasion."

Another person was gluten free and thy immediately provided special bread and explained what she could eat Staff very professional and excellent food We were only a bit disappointed because the dinning room was a bit noisy...."

  • "Luxurious dining room, spacious and comfortable. Staff are very friendly and attentive (noticing that you need something before you have to ask). The menu is quite short but gives plenty of choice. Amazing quality ingredients in some unusual combinations, cooked to the highest standards. The only downside from my perspective was that difference in price for the set-menu between 2 and 3 courses seemed disproportionate (£25) and put me off having a third course."

  • "I have been enjoying this restaurant for many years, since it was owned by Gordon Ramsay , and was very excited to try out the restaurant since its recent refurbishment. It was always a very elegant high quality establishment. The dinner I had last week was very disappointing as the ambiance is no longer what it was , the service levels no better than an average gastro pub, the staff were almost rude in not attempting to speak decent English and in general very disappointing. I'm afraid the 200 pounds for a two course meal for two of us , only having with a glass of simple wine was excessive"

  • "I booked this table for a special anniversary for one of our customers and my boss said that unequivocally it was the best meal he has ever eaten, as did the rest of the party. Not an inexpensive meal, but for the per head value for the food, exceptional. They really felt looked after and the restaurant is sending signed copies of their Chef's Table menu. I had to book and pay a long way in advance, but definitely worthwhile."

  • "Portions were very generous and cooking was accurate but much of the food was too salty. Mentioned this to the staff who didn't charge us for dessert by way of apology - a nice gesture. In fact, the highlight of the evening was the charming and attentive staff - oh, and those moreish tapioca-cheese puffs too! The new 'luxurious-utilitarian' look feels a bit unwelcoming; the brown of the wood panelling quarrels with the brown of the leather banquettes, the small framed pictures do little to relieve the starkness of the decor; attractive pale teal (?) chairs were somewhat overwhelmed by the overall dark, brooding look of the room. We were great fans pre-makeover, less so now taking both food and ambience into account."

  • "My wife and myself went to Marcus for her birthday on a friday night. Weekends seem to be "birthday weekends" as birthday candles did shine on at least 8 other tables as we were there :-) We went for the tasting menu made of 8 different courses. The food was great all the way through.The service was personal & the staff is very friendly. The service is not as formal as in other michelin star restaurants, which is an aspect of the experience we appreciated. Overall a great experience."

  • "we have dined at Marcus a few times prior to the revamp and I'm sorry to say that the sparkle has gone. The food is delicious and cannot be faulted but we used to be served with amuse bouche, a selection of breads and a mouth cleanser prior to dessert, we always found these touches added to the excitement of the dining experience and made it special as did the staff that always remembered us and made us feel so welcome. We found the lunch menu fantastic value for money because of all of this, but it has now all gone. Love the food Marcus, but bring back the sparkle and excitement, otherwise at lunchtime it is just somewhere for businessmen to have their lunch and not the likes of us that travel from North Norfolk specifically to dine here"

Service as you would expect was exceptional, environment just a little bit quiet - not helped by only being about 50% occupied throughout lunch by other diners. As you can imagine the food was fabulous, the foie gras starter easily the best I've ever had. The beef main course of my wife's was divine. Each course accompanied by a wine choice from the sommelier and great they were throughout. Overall a great lunch, excellent and just the right level of privacy. Upper end of London lunch prices but definitely worth it."

  • "We returned to Marcus, as it is now known, 2 months after its reopening following the grand refurbishment. To be honest, it didn't feel any different - the colour scheme was similar and we had to struggle to notice the differences. The ambience was still very good with a nice feel, whether for couples on a romantic lunch (we saw a few) or business associates. The tables are very well spaced out, making us feel like we have plenty of privacy. The lunch menu now includes small "tasting" courses and not all courses have to be taken, which gives great flexibility in choosing dishes and offers outstanding value. Service was extremely speedy and I imagine could be even quicker if requested. Look out for the pig cheeks - the wow factor there!"

  • "Had a perfect meal with my partner, tasting menu was delicious with perfect timings in between meals. Got to meat Marcus Wareing himself who was an absolute pleasure to speak to, really made the meal just that little bit more special. We received a lovely little birthday cake to surprise my partner and he very much enjoyed it. The new restaurant layout is absolutely stunning, very classy and well kept. Wine choices were magnificent and very tasty! Would happily go back as I also thought the overall price was substantial. Gorgeous meal. Thank you to all in the kitchen and the whole of the waiting staff. (Loved the chocolates at our leave too) "

  • "My husband and I ate at Marcus Wareing to celebrate a 50th birthday. We went for the tasting menu and some items were not to our particular taste. However, there were three stunning dishes - we raved about the main course Lamb dish, the Lemon Meringue Iced Tea and the Tiramisu; with the Veal Belly coming in slightly behind... Overall, it was a lovely experience - we went early because we had to travel a fair distance, and as such, the restaurant was pretty much empty for half our time and therefore the ambiance was lacking (there were some groups in private dining rooms). The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable, but while the restaurant was empty this felt a little intimidating since we were next to the service station. "

Our waitress and the Sommelier were excellent with a friendly rather than stuffy attitude which made the experience even nicer. They discovered it was my birthday and also presented me with a birthday cake which was a nice touch but we were too full to even consider tasting it. No problem, they immediately boxed it to take home with us"

  • "A group of us booked this meal expecting to receive world class food + experience and as a result you do expect that a certain cost will come with that. However the food was average at best, lots of presentation without much substance or indeed flavour, I cant remember one dish whereby my taste buds were tingling or thinking that I must have any of the food again, it was all very very average. Yet the price of the meal was unbelievable, nearly £200 per head with hardly any of us drinking - for example £6 for a lemonade meaning we spent £150 on lemonades alone !! Put simply this meal is not worth the money and for half the price you can have a much better meal and experience in a Michelin star restaurant."

  • "The chair must have been near the aircon, there was a cold draft behind it, my dining partner was brought a blanket, though the waitress left without giving me one so I moved side. The starter was great, but the main (middlewhite pork) was not good, some of the pork-belly pieces consisted entirely of borderline burnt crackling + fat (solid) and no meat - dining partner described this as "unpleasant" - I had to agree. Waitress brought desert to make up for main. Was all good except the main, which considering the michelin star and the price is not really on. - Cannot recommend."

  • "A very special experience. My family party of six agreed that we have never experienced food of such quality. Intriguing flavours in perfect balance. Efficient and quietly friendly and courteous service but whilst staff to customer ratio is inevitably excellent there was a feeling that the floor was busier than the tables. Service was not discrete. One would not dine here on a budget, but, even so, a bill in excess of £1000 for six, including pre-dinner drinks and three bottles of wine at the lower end of the comprehensive list - means that we won't, unfortunately, be back for some time!"

  • "This was a second visit to Marcus, post the refit. The restaurant is certainly lighter and much more modern - a big improvement. However the food and service has taken a big step back. The food was best described as average, lacking flavor and taste. Their were no dishes that you actually remembered 10 mins after eating them. The service seemed unknowledgeable and lacking in an ability to describe then dishes or there ingredients, which wasn't helped by the uninspiring way the menu was written. This is a very expensive experience that does not warrant the cost - there are many many better places to eat in London - I won't be returning. "

We had a long leisurely lunch following the tasting menu. Expensive, yes, but value for money - completely.   • "Given the market, their a la carte prices aren't realistic so we waited until we can both make it to the weekday lunch menu since the refurb - boy, we were impressed! Perfectly cooked and presented. Waiters not overbearing. Go for the humble Cornish mackerel as a starter, it's the best thing I've had in London in a long time. Ask for a quiet corner, they will give you a spacious window-side that is a little removed from the rest of tables. The wine list is impressive but if you'd rather not, try the pineapple juice, it's amazing (don't try peach, a little disgusting..). We were concerned that the refurb might take away the experience but that was quickly blown away."

  • "Wow! Rarely do I find so little to criticise. The menu could be longer but there is something for all tastes and sometimes it is refreshing not to have to search through page after page . What was supplied was just perfect. A very warm welcome by very professional staff who were aware of just the right level of involvement with the diners. The wine list is very well put together and again there is something for all tastes and levels of expenditure. Obviously the "Marcus" experience is not cheap but for an "occasion" you would be very hard to please if you came away disappointed."
