A word from Mari Vanna
Situated in the heart of Knightsbridge, Mari Vanna, home of the mythical Russian matriarch, bids you a warm welcome to her London outpost for a home-cooked meal and a cosy retreat.
Specialising in “babushka cooking”, the menu is replete with Russian dishes and influences from the former Soviet countries of Georgia, Ukraine and also offers an extensive selection of salads and lighter dishes displaying a liberal use of fresh herbs. Its generous and exquisite selection of tea-time treats, cakes and infusions, meanwhile, is hard to resist, and available throughout the day.
With extraordinary attention to detail, Mari Vanna transports each guest into the Russian home of a bygone era where shelves are adorned with matryoshka dolls, trinkets and tchotchke. Displaying true Russian tradition from top to toe, Mari Vanna is a rare find in London.

Initially opened in a private apartment in St Petersburg, Mari Vanna has sister restaurants in Moscow and New York.

  • "I went to Mari Vanna for dinner with my mother. A friend of mine recommended this beautifully furnished restaurant in the heart of Knightsbridge. Very cosy restaurant with a nice ambience and outstanding food. The staff was helpful as it was our first time to eat in a Russian restaurant and we weren't disappointed. Together with our food we had a nice bottle of white wine going really well with the fish cake and the cod. We loved it and we're going to be back very soon."

  • "We often visit Mari Vanna whenever we are in town. Always reliable; the food always good and the ambiance relaxing. Although the restaurant area is small and tables are close they are not intrusive and voices from other tables do not carry so every table is personal. Well worth a visit."

  • "Lovely environment, all the waiters are extremely friendly. Unique drinks and some really special plates."

  • "Food was nice - nothing too special honestly but fit for their description as: home made food. The portion was big - I was very full after my starter so wasted a lot of food. There was little people in the restaurant so it was great for us to talk. Decorations were as good as people described. Service was good+not overwhelming."

  • "The experience was fantastic. I was desperate for some homemade food, being so far from my home country and my family, and I brought along my Bulgarian friend - to indulge in the amaziness of Russian food. Mari Vanna didn't let me down. The food was perfect, indeed, and there's not much to say. It was a fantastic discovery for my Bulgarian friend, and a pride for myself. The interior and ambience are a loca mixture of 19th century and Soviet style but luckily these two styles treat each other nicely and live in harmony. The waitresses are all nicely dressed (having a habit to wear casual for fine dining, I was a bit worried about the waiters in suits) and their service is as smooth as their Kholodez."

  • "It was an exceptional experience! The atmosphere of the restaurant is so romantic. The service is excellent! It was my boyfriend's birthday and waiters and hostesses came to sign happy bd for him! It was really sweet! I would definitely go there again! "

  • "Perfect dinner in a super cosy restaurant: attentive staff and delicious food. I have simply fallen in love with their Honeycake."

  • "I booked a table for 6 people on Saturday 31st May to celebrate my birthday and it was just outstanding. Beautifully decorated, comfortable seating, well-cooked, delicious food and lovely, attentive waiting staff. I can't fault this place and would eat there every week if I could. We all had such a great night and were made to feel so welcome. Being serenaded "Happy Birthday" in Russian is something I won't forget. Thanks so much! One thing I will say is that this place is more expensive than restaurants I would normally visit, but it's in Knightsbridge and it's worth every penny. Food-wise, I had a meat pastry, the Georgian flatbread, Siberian pelmeni, honey cake and several delicious vodkas. Thank you! I'll be back! xx"

  • "Took the lady for her birthday treat here. Nice to get a taste of traditional russian food. The food was well made, the place was decorated really well, especially the loos. The welcome was formal and respectful, but relaxed and pleasant. I recommend the horseradish vodka. The two minor quibbles would be a) our waitress made an obvious mistake by forgetting to bring us a dish, even though we asked twice for it, yet insisted we hadn't asked for it. Not what you expect, especially at a more classy venue b) the waitress recommended we order 3 starters and a main. I'm glad we ignored her advice - 3 starters was more than enough and we had enough left over to need a doggy bag!"

  • "Took a lovely Russian lady on a first date here after being told she had never eaten at a Russian restaurant in London after living there for 5 years. This was my first taste of Russian food and I'm very glad I chose Mari Vanna to experience this. The lovely Russian lady had all sorts of nostalgic memories of her childhood come to life here and had the opportunity to teach me all about the different dishes we tried with their importance to her upbringing. I can tell you, she was very happy. The quality of the vodka was also fantastic, it tasted so easy to drink which was very deceiving as I didn't expect it to come on so strong. It hit me like a train. Great food, service and staff; lots of fun!"

  • "Excellent food and service. I highly recommend this place to Russians for a reminder of home and to international visitors who will doubtlessly enjoy the variety of Russian food available. The service is both Russian and English speaking and the menus are in both languages as well. Perfect place to take your non Russian business associates if you are Russian. "

  • "Very good value with authentic and comfortable Russian surroundings. Our birthday girl was delighted with her surprise Russian afternoon tea and we all loved the experience of having the staff sing 'Happy Birthday' in Russian to her."

  • "I decided to surprise my girlfriend yet again by taking her to this quaint little Russian restaurant in Knightsbridge. It'd first been recommended to me by a Russian friend who described as like visiting her grandmothers house, I was intrigued and had a look at some of the photos online. Whilst not quite exactly my taste, I knew my girlfriend would love it. So much so, she ended up telling me several times how much she loved the place. We asked the waitress to offer us some suggestions as neither of us were exactly experts on Soviet cuisine, her recommendations were excellent and the ambience just delightful. As we looked around, it was apparent that this restaurant was frequented by Russians which we took as a positive sign."

  • "Its a curious experience walking past the uber-modern One Hyde Park then entering this restaurant which is decorated as an old fashioned tearoom. We don't know how authentic the russian food actually is but it was excellent to us, and there seemed to be many russians dining who agreed; the borscht, jellied chicken, cod cakes and dumplings all tasted wonderful. We had the honey cake and napoleon for dessert and perhaps the only gripe was that these were almost too sweet and rich. The service was excellent, attentive and friendly. The a la carte is expensive but we had the set menu which is very good value. Well worth trying."

  • "The food was good, tasty, homemade. Very tasty. As a foreigner I react to the aburd cost of soft drinks, pute water and plan black tea. Also the VAT is added to prices AND service is added to the liking of the restaurant. Mari Vanna is a cosy restaurant and waiters are waiting upon you. We were 2 guests and experienced 4 different waiters during our lunch. I think the pricing policy is a drawback."

  • "We had a lovely dinner last Friday at Mari Vanna. We had Borscht to start with, two pirogis and then Siberian Pimeni for main and we ended our russian experience with the Honey Cake. All of them were delicious, the waiter was very polite and the decoration was out of this world. Would definitely go back in the future."

  • "A lovely restaurant with lots of character from entrance, dining areas to lavatories Food was delicious Service attentive We did not have to wait long after making our requests"
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "Has the £32 afternoon tea deal. Thought this was v good value- you get a three tiered stand with the bottom tier savoury and the top two sweet. The savoury food was nicely different from a traditional afternoon tea eg blini with caviar, however I would caution that there is quite a bit of fish involved so it might not be great if you're not a fish eater. The sweet section was v tasty- only criticism was that each of the two tiers only held one type of cake on each, not a nice little selection of different cakes, so there wasn't much variety. Décor was lovely, although there was a big stain on my chair- surprising since they had obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the decoration as a whole- shame to slip up on the little things."

  • "When I think of the countless times I've sauntered past this little eatery... which added all the more to my delighted surprise, when I stepped inside for the first time. Imagine being in a cosy cottage, shaded lamps, ornaments, chandeliers, flowers. The wonderful, authentic, Russian food it's just perfect. The menu comprises all the Russian national favourites, the staff are helpful and the whole experience is much recommended."

  • "I booked for my friends & I to have a special Russian dinner. It would be impossible for Mari Vanna to disappoint in terms of the venue, food and service. Venue - This special place is filled in almost every corner with something authentic, inquisitive, charming and lovely - You are in for a visual treat here. Food - all authentic and authentically themed Russian food. The seasoning was on point as were the flavours. Clean, hearty and interesting. Service - friendly, helpful and full of smiles. They also do not interrupt mid-bite. I had the Pierogi's, moorish! The Pelmeni, was delicious and the Honey Cake was better than I imagined. Table turning is the only thing stopping this from being a 5 star review."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "Never going back, it was abysmal. Food was just disgusting and service was miserable. An aeroplane crash would have been a happier sight to look at than the waitress, who couldn't speak very good English."
    dined on 10/03/2014
  • "We had a nice experience in the restaurant, with friendly service (not blaming us for coming three persons instead of six/seven promised). We were placed in a nice area and serviced very well compared to other London restaurants. The food is a bit pricey but it tastes good and worth it. However, two of us had ... severe food poisoning following the visit (either by pelmeni or meat pies)... I had visited the place several times before, and it was always up-to-the-mark. Not this time, unfortunately."

  • "Had a business dinner at Mari Vanna. Great ambience and their picked vegetables are really nice. Not just the side dish, mains and dessert are generally good. But on this particular occasion, the service was very slow.... The waiter was apologetic - probably the kitchen was under staffed. We'll still give it another go."
