Having eaten at a few Tappenyaki restaurants in the UK and abroad, the experience, normally associated with this style of dining, unfortunately, didn't even come close to the others. There wasn't any entertainment provided by our table Chef that you would expect i.e. cutting/slicing the food, mixing of ingredients in a 'show style' fashion, only the banging of some culinery tools! Also, we were seated at a large table with other diners so not very private at all.

While such Teppanyaki is not really traditional Japanese style, it was entertaining and the food served was quite authentic to us Japanese :) Highly recommended however on the pricy side. I'd come back.

Good Japanese Teppanyaki, with limited showmanship (good). Plenty of flamboyant guests and people showing off to their partners, makes for a weird atmosphere. Food is good, steak was very nicely cooked, but can's seem to master the art of producing all the food at the same time, So all steaks start cooking at the same time even when one is rare and the next one well done.

We came for a company meal to celebrate the upcoming wedding of one of our team members. We had the set menu of lobster and wagyu which was a well paced, beautifully presented and delicious. The service was attentive but unobtrusive. Thanks for a great night.

Very good teppan yaki in London. Friendly atmosphere and good food. Unfortunately we were a bit spoiled recently by the ultimate teppan yaki experience at Ukai Tei in Tokyo otherwise might have given this a better rating.

We've enjoyed Matsuri St James for business lunches on at least four occasions over the past year or so. It is always special. Authentic from the moment you step in from the pavement. Wonderful ambiance. Exciting food. First-class service. And an excellent wine list! Matsuri St James is always special.

We have been going to Matsuri for many years and it remains top quality as it has always been. We shared the simple assorted Sashimi to start, which consisted of 3 types of fish, salmon, tuna and yellow tail . All very tasty and extremely fresh. Then we had the combined lobster tail and sirloin Tepanyaki with egg fried rice as extra. We like our meat rare and it was cooked to perfection. Make sure the chef also prepares the sirloin fat separately, it's the best part of the meal. Unfortunately no room or time for dessert on this occasion but fireball ice cream with mango is delicious and a real spectacle. When booking ask for Austin, he is the best chef there.

Careful when ordering Sake. I was asked for a recommendation and was recommended a bottle for £36 and another for £44. After the menu was taken from me, I was brought a bottle for £88 and asked taste it. After tasting it I was recommended to take that bottle instead. I didn't have a menu to see the price and I was too embarassed to ask the waitress as I was entertaining guests. I was shocked when the bill came through. Black cod and tartars were of inferior quality. The sashimi and steaks were reasonable.

Unfortunately the waitress was extremely poor: 1) Didn't realise my other guest has already arrived and suggested we sat at the bar to wait! 2) Incorrectly served the tempura first rather than as part of the main course 3) Miso soup forgotten as part of the main course 4) Finally, had to wait for 15 mins for the milk for the coffee which has then gone cold. No wonder the place is half empty on a Thurs lunch time!

Teppan-yaki is the reason you come here, which is cooked right in front of you. It's decent, but not outstanding. It's quite a nice place to take a date and good for business lunch. The decor of sleeky wood furnishings and warm lighting at the table suits for both purposes. You will get a ridiculuous napkin draped over you when you sit at the table. The staff are always attentive and friendly. Their trademark "fireball" ice cream is just ice cream flamed up for two seconds at the table before you eat it. Pricey! But overall feeling is "good".

Matsuri is one of those 'special occasion' places. The sort of place that when you go you, decide to eat out less often to be able to have an experience there again soon. The sushi bar, for serious sushi lovers is a must but the teppan is where all of the action happens. We went for the sake tasting menu which was a series of 8 delicious courses cooked in front of you with the accompanying saki to match chosen by their saki sommelier. Truly special. I am already looking forward to my next meal at Matsuri!

However, I was shocked when I was charged £ 20-00 for two 125ml. wine. If I eat there again I will be careful with my choice of drinks.

I used to dine at Matsuri regularly, but had not been for some time. I have always enjoyed the sushi and tepanyaki, as well as most everything they offer on the menu. The service and food remain excellent, but prices seem to have almost doubled under newer management. The prices on their updated menu are a joke. While a slight makeover had taken place upstairs and the whiskey selection seemed improved, there was nothing to justify the price hike. I would hesitate to return due to the prices. The set menus now start at £65 and go up from there. Maybe good for a business lunch where you aim to impress, but better value for money can be found elsewhere and the food, while great, should not be as pricey as it now is.

I took my wife to Matsuri for our 3rd wedding anniversary, we have always enjoyed Japanese inspired cuisine and teppenyake seemed like the perfect choice for a nice evening away from the kids (well at the time there was no escaping little Jude as he was still being grown in Mummy's tummy :)) that would also suit the occasion. The restaurant was excellent, the selection of food, the service and the environment, all excellent for a variety of occasions, happily, our anniversary included! The absolute best aspect of this restaurant as you'd hope from this kind of restaurant is the chefs, the cooking on the teppans was amazing, and without a doubt you'd be missing out by not ordering the fireball ice cream, an absolute highlight, enjoy!

The title says it all - the set menus have recently been downsized, in everything but price, and the the new wine list is particularly silly - the prices are as absurd as The Arts Club - a pity - maybe they only want to attract investment types happy to pay £150 for an indifferent bottle of wine. Food quality , service and ambience still all great.

It is a fun place to have lunch or dinner with your colleagues from the office, however it is slightly overpriced. Having dined there many times last year (2013) I would say that there has been a slight decline overall in both food quality and service. This is possibly due to staff turnover as there seemed to be very few personnel there now which were there last year. This is not what you would necessarily expect from such an eating establishment. Overall I was sad to note the decline as it spoiled the dining experience and did not quite live up to my expectations which had been built up from my previous experiences last year.

Ordered the eel lunch set, the eel was way too salty and so was the side dish of tuna. I've been here several times in the past few months and it's been consistently too salty. Colleague ordered the aubergine and tempura set and found it really salty too. I'm a regular customer and I don't recall things being this salty a year ago, perhaps they have a new chef now?

Fantastic Venue and authentic Japanese cuisine. I chose Matsuri for wife's birthday as she is native to Japan but essentially based upon our previous good experiences of this restaurant. The staff and management were very accomodating with regard to our 14 month old daughter and took our picture, printed it and gave it to us on the spot. 1st class Teppan Yaki - my wife had the sea food and I had the 300g steak. We had been here more than once before and it was better. They used to bring you a little entreè, we took fillet and lobster and there usually were two sauces for it while this time only one came. Instead of different teppaniaky veg they gave us veg cooked in a pan that weren't so good. Furtermore it is nice to have a Japanese cook not an european cook pretending to be a teppaniaky cook.
