Very slow service, over priced for below average food, in Liverpool city center you have a good selection of places to eat, Liverpool One is only a couple of minutes walk with a fantastic selection of restaurants.

I reserved the table for 4 people on Saturday at 8.15. We were running a little late so I telephoned the restaurant to tell them. I was informed by a member of their staff that the restaurant was closed for the evening as they had a wedding on. We then had to start telephoning round restaurants to find a table at very short notice. This was a massive inconvenience and we had all been looking forward to eating in the merchants restaurant. I think you would be better contacting the restaurant to see when the restaurant is closed for functions, as it could lead to other people being disappointed. I'm just glad we didn't walk in on a wedding as I would of been very embarrassed.

I booked a meal here for my 3rd anniversary. I should my wife the pictures and reviews and she was very happy. The menu appealed to both of us and we were both looking forward to going. We had booked the table for 7pm on a Wednesday . We arrived a little early to treat ourselves to a cocktail. My wife remarked to the barman that it was a bit quiet and is he restaurant located elsewhere. He looked at her puzzled and said that the restaurant is not open midweek and it had been that way for sometime. He asked us how we booked and we told him. We even got my phone out to show the confirmation. He told us that their online services were not working and apologised to us for the wasted journey. I only wish we had actually had some food .

Booked and received confirmation so all was looking good! Turned up at the time we booked for only to find the restaurant closed for a private party leaving us having to find an alternative venue on a busy Saturday night. Really disappointed with such poor service! Would not recommend anyone books here using Toptable given there is no guarantee your booking will be honoured!

This centrally located restaurant is the ground floor of a magnificent old building which is a boutique hotel. The grand dining room and the cocktail lounge has fantastic high ceilings with a middle glass dome and furnished in subdued colours in a classic/modern style. Best dining room in Liverpool. The staff are attentive and friendly. The fix price menu has a good number of choices and is very good value. The main courses were well cooked and nicely presented with vegetables. The only let down was the desserts, particularly the creme brule which didn't have the burnt top and did not taste too good.

Beautiful building with lots of potential. Dark and grotty inside, staff rude. Didn't stay long enough to be able to sample food due to rude and unaccommodating staff. Look at trip advisor and you will see lots of negative reviews - there unfortunately not wrong. Plenty of nice places to eat out in Liverpool - avoid this one.

Despite being Saturday night was pretty quiet. When we arrived, there was a billboard advertising 2 courses for £12.99 and 3 courses for £14.99 Chilean Cabernet Merlot was rather unpleasant. Girlfriend's Shiraz, considerably better. Starter of crispy fried squid with a zesty saffron mayonnaise, was neither zesty, nor had enough saffron in it so that you could taste it, but overall dish was tasty enough. Partners Leek and potato soup was under-seasoned and rather bland. Main courses of Pork and Steak were excellent and tasty, if rather light on vegetables. Sticky toffee pudding was lovely, although caramel ice cream rather over egged the pudding and vanilla would have been nicer. Staff were very pleasant and service was quick.

I've been going to this restaurant since it was called "Room". It used to be really busy and a touch classy. Don't get me wrong - the food was still good, but only seven people were eating in the restaurant on a Friday night, and four of those were in our party. The room was cold, the service pretty slow, and little things like the menu being a printed A4 sheet which was much shorter than the website showed, or there being lamb on the menu but no mint sauce available. My very tasty rib eye steak came with chips and a tablespoon of purée - no garnish, salad, etc. All in all, a nice, if over priced meal, which could have been so much better. I think that Fridays will remain slow at the Merchant's Table until they get their act together.

The restaurant is well-located in Liverpool city centre and is part of a boutique hotel. It is situated in a former banking house and the interior is very opulent. I enjoyed my experience and the service was very good, albeit it was quiet on my diner visit. I had an excellently presented Goast Cheese, Watermelon Summer Leaves and Beetroot starter; Sea Bream with Orange, Red Pepper and Braised Baby Gem for mains and a dessert of Baked Camembert Oatmeal Biscuits and Ale Chutney, all of which with a glass of wine, water and coffee at under £40 was pretty good value relative to some restaurants I have tried in the region.Definately worth a try if you are visiting the city.

Merchants is a beautiful restaurant. We struggled to make a reservation for a Saturday night anywhere else as we'ld left it til last minute. Merchants was really very quiet but we enjoyed an excellent meal. There we 4 of us, we tired 3 different starters between us and 4 different main courses. All were well prepared, hot and beautifully presented. We had pre-dinner cocktails which were very tastey as was the wine that we had. The staff were very pleasant if a little under-worked. Since we were a lively party the restaurant being quiet didn't affect our evening but our meal was excellent so I'm not quite sure why it's not busier!!!

Food was well presented and we did not have a long wait once ordered. Unfortunately a true picture regards atmosphere and service could not be gauged as we as a party of seven were the only diners at 3pm. We were well advised on wine selection and the staff were attentive but not obtrusive. Would like to try again in more peak time dining.

Service was good from two nice young waitresses, and chef was flexible with some requests to changing meal a bit from the menu. The duck in particular was lovely, perfectly cooked, although a creme brulee for dessert was disappointingly undercooked and runny. The overall meal was very good value for money, and bill was corrected for the poor dessert. Ambience was a bit lacking as the dining area was quite empty, even though it was 8pm on a Fri evening, but the setting itself is very nice, with the restaurant in an old bank. I would eat here again, and would recommend for an early dinner in town.

We thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed feel of the place. Although the menu is not extensive, the choices available for each course were varied and suitable to all tastes. The special offers for a 2 course meal or 3 course with half bottle of wine were excellent value. The food was very well presented and cooked to a very good standard. The service was excellent and made us feel that our custom mattered. We have already decided to go back and have made a booking for a special birthday.

Food was fabulous .... Spot on , from taste, presentation.... And cost however the evening was some what spoilt by the service. Our waitress clearly had issues with her work and not once did she make us feel welcome. She even informed us that she didn't like the Liverpool accent. ,which was clear but also concerning as she was working in a beautiful central Liverpool location where most of the clients are most likely to have Liverpool accents

We ate from the special menu which was 3 courses and a half bottle of red or white wine for £18.95 which we considered to be very good value. There was a choice of 4 starters, about 6 mains (steak has a £4.50 supplement but was delicious) and 3 desserts. Our group of 4 all enjoyed their meals and would visit Merchants again. Our server was attentive but not intrusive which was excellent. They gave you time to wait between initial ordering and before ordering dessert and poured the wine when needed. The restaurant was not full on a Thursday but enough people in there. The white wine included in the meal deal was Pinot Grigio which was nice. The bar and restaurant do initially seem a little dark but I find this is fine.

It was disappointing that the large, impressive original banking hall had been clumsily divided into two areas, creating a small bar and almost claustophobic, black panelled raised dining area. The A4 card menus looked cheap. The food was good, but there was very little of it (2 x 3 inch diameter rings - one of turkey, one of potato constituted the main course of the set Christmas menu, which at £29+ was considerably overpriced. The Christmas pudding trifle was tremendous though. The staff were pleasant and none of my disappointment is attributable to them. But on the first Friday in December, when other restaurants are busting at the seams, Merchants remained stoically half filled. So it's probably not just me, then.

The Cripsy Fried Squid that we all had was the best we have ever tasted, anywhere. Just so soft and delicate. The steaks that we had were perhaps slightly over-done. Both were one notch up from where we were expecting. Medium Rare was Medium and the Medium was Medium Well. This is our first time in Liverpool so may just be the local standard. Overall I would not hesitate in recommending Merchants to anyone. Fantastic restraunt. Located in an exquisite old 19th Century Banking Hall Merchants restrauant is only spoilt by the fact that it shares its dining hall with a rather noisy bar. We were there on a Friday night so perhaps on another night this might not be an issue. The service was excellent and attentive.
