A word from Mezzanine
Overlooking London's River Thames, Mezzanine is one of two restaurants located in the iconic National Theatre on London’s South Bank. Naturally, Mezzanine restaurant is absolutely ideal for pre-theatre dining with a special, super-quick two-course pre-theatre menu. Staff are experts at serving you swiftly so you can settle in your seat before curtain. Mezzanine is usefully open for post-theatre too. However, Mezzanine restaurant has come in to its own thanks to its convenient location, attractive surroundings and great food, making this chic little restaurant popular in its own right. Simply decorated in mid-century tones and shapes which complement the iconic architecture of the building, Mezzanine is bang on trend but timeless all at once. A short and sweet modern European lunch and supper menu offers everything you can ask for from a sophisticated London restaurant plus an excellent selection of drinks to ensure your evening is a smash hit. Diner Reviews
  • "We have been going to the Mezzanine for many years and have never been disappointed. It isn't cheap, but the starters and main courses are very good."

  • "I will say the starter was nice and was quite tasty. Unfortunately, the main was cold as if it was cooked sometime ago and left to be served."

  • "Great for pre/post theatre because you get asked what performance you are visiting to ensure you are not late! Lovely food at a not too remarkable price. But wonderful service from the staff. Try to get there early for your table. They really like that!"

  • "Mezzanine is in a nice location especially for the National Theater. We were in a group of seven celebrating something. 4 adults and 3 children. The staff was very nice and accommodated up nicely for the children. The menu was a little on the small side. Most of the food was ok, nothing special recommend on."

  • "Don't use Toptable to book this excellent restaurant. They've lost my booking twice. Fortunately they found us a table with a great view of the river."

  • "We are regulars at Mezzanine, post National Theatre productions, but this was the first Sunday lunch we had booked. It's always a pleasurable experience dining at Mezzanine; the tables are sufficiently spaced to hold conversations; the views over the bustling Thames are unique; service is excellent as is the food."

  • "Fine fit for purpose.Decent food, well served.Wouldn't use for special occasion."

  • "We didn't really know what to expect because we booked last minute for a family gathering but were pleasantly surprised. Fantastic food, most of the dishes had a slight twist and were all beautifully presented. My five year old daughter came with us and they were very accommodating. It was a spacious restaurant and as we weren't going to the theatre we were not rushed. I would definitely go back again."

  • "Location, location, location! That is the main advantage of the Mezzanine, being in the heart of the National Theatre. One can even have dessert during the interval which is so civilised. The food quality has improved considerably and although I wouldn't come to the Mezzanine just to eat it is a pleasant experience now at least. Smoked salmon was fine, beef & frites alway reliable, fish dishes good now, desserts still rather remind me of school. Good wine list and don't forget to ask for the set menu which they often won't offer you up front."

  • "The service was prompt, the meal well cooked and the wine excellent. You can ask for not more for a pre-theatre restaurant."

  • "We had to say goodbye to much-loved friends, off home to Hong Kong. We wanted a hearty 'British' meal together, somewhere quiet enough for conversation. The quality of food here has always been high - now, I think it's even better. Three of us had braised shank of lamb, with a cutlet, & shallot puree; the fact that we ordered mash on the side made this the classiest comfort food ever. Our 12-year-old friend had a pork loin chop - more 'comfort' mash - polished off with great relish. We dithered over desserts, & ended up sharing cheeseboards. We also got the 'buzz' of theatre-goers, without having to move from our corner table. Staff couldn't have been nicer. Now, Mezzanine: could you open up in Hong Kong please, for the return visit?"

  • "We had decent food, served quickly and attentively - all in all a good option for shows at the theatre."

  • "We go to the National Theatre regularly and often dine at Mezzanine. The food is always of a high standard and we can relax and enjoy a leisurely meal without worrying about possibly arriving at the theatre late! It can be a little on the pricey side at times, though, but, for sheer convenience and consistently good food and efficient service, it is hard to beat."

  • "Mezzanine provides an excellent quality fine-dining experience in an elegant setting with lots of natural light, overlooking the Thames. While it is very convenient for shows at the National Theatre, I would love to come here for a long leisurely meal with a small group of friends. Knowledgeable (and far too busy) staff share stupendous wine pairings to go with any of their dishes. The food...? I have a number of allergies, so, though the staff attempted to assist me, options for me were limited. However, I had the seared tuna and it was exquisite, with the vegetables cooked to perfection. The Spanish wine was a perfect light complement to the fish. I recommend this restaurant very highly."

  • "Arrived at restaurant to find they had no record of our booking through toptable, despite having the received a reminder email. Fortunately we arrived 10 minutes early so they were able to squeeze us into a corner without too much delay as we were going to the National after dinner. The restaurant itself was good and they sorted out a little mix up on the bill with no issue. The overall rating is only low because the dining experience was tarnished by the initial stress of potentially not having anywhere to eat on a Saturday night with only an hour till the show."
    dined on 10/08/2013
  • "Dinned here pre-performance and had a wonderful meal. While on a time deadline for curtain up at 19:15 the food arrived in a timely fashion, yet without the usual rush and bustle of a pre-theatre menu."
    dined on 01/08/2013
  • "The Mezzanine is deservedly popular. Efficient, friendly service and great food in one of the top UK cultural institutions. What topped the service was cold water was immediately given to me and my friend on arrival. Simple thing to do, but set the atmosphere for the whole evening on excellence. I shall be back!"
    dined on 19/07/2013
  • "Yet again, we had an excellent pre-theatre meal at Mezzanine on Tuesday evening. The tuna in the Nicoise starter was very fresh, the goats cheese starter was very tasty and the mains of pork and halibut were beautifully cooked. Our waitress was friendly and efficient - overall a very good meal. Pity the play at the Lyttelton didn't come up to expectations - but then you can't have everything ........"
    dined on 16/07/2013
  • "On a very hot evening the very effective air conditioning in the restaurant was very welcome. The food was of the usual high standard with some excellent and original dishes. The wine list is very comprehenive but very dear for the vintages in some cases."
    dined on 15/07/2013
  • "We went to the Mezzanine before seeing Strange Interlude at the National Theatre and really enjoyed it. In particular, the service was excellent as we hadn't realised the play started at 7, so really didn't leave enough time, however our waiter made sure we got served quickly and didn't make us feel rushed. I had the excellent mushroom starter followed by the lamb with sweetbreads--both cooked extremely well. I will definitely be back!"

  • "Mezzanine is so convenient for dining pre or post performances at the National Theatre. Service is always exemplary and the food is always good and innovative."
    dined on 29/06/2013
  • "We hadn't dined at Mezzanine for a while because we felt we had exhausted the menu, which didn't seem to change much, and so we had become a bit bored, but things seem to have perked up recently - not sure if it is down to a change of management or just a revamping of the menu since we last went. Either way, we were pleasantly surprised - the new menu was very tempting and we felt spoilt for choice - and we all thoroughly enjoyed our pre-theatre meal. I would go so far as to say that I would think of booking there for a leisurely dinner in future - not just for pre-theatre lunch or dinner."
    dined on 08/06/2013
  • "Overpriced and uninspired menu, a restaurant and ambience that have had no thought put into them, music at a volume that is just loud enough to hear but not loud enough to add to the atmosphere (similar to how it is played in a hospital) combine to make this a thoroughly bad eating experience. Amazed that people feel this is a restaurant in its own right rather than a place you accidentally go to (once) because it is in the theatre. Many much better placed nearby - Skylon just down the way is everything this place is not."
    dined on 08/06/2013
  • "We went to the Mezzanine before going to the National Theatre, expecting the usual OK meal. There must be a new chef or new management because this meal rated as one of my top meals of the year so far. I had an incredible mushroom medley to start followed by lamb with sweetbreads--both absolutely excellent in addition to being unusual. The other diners also had fabulous meals, with the scallops rating very high. With 2 bottles of wine and 2 desserts we got away with £45 per head which isn't a bad price for such an amazing meal. Well done! Can't wait to go back."
    dined on 05/06/2013
  • "I have not been to The National Theatre for a few years and have not visited the Mezzanine for a long time. Memories flooded back when I was in the restaurant. In an ever changing world it was good to find that The Mezza nine had lost none if its ambience and is still a ;lovely place to dine in."
    dined on 29/05/2013
  • "My girlfriend and myself arrived late at Mezzanine; after going to the Apollo Theatre to watch a play. We were both very tired because we hadn't been able to go to our hotel yet; because our plane ran late and we had to get to the theatre on time. So we still had our bags with us and just wanted to go to our hotel. But because we had made reservations we went to the restaurant anyway. Mezzanine turned out to be a very good dining experience. The staff worked very fast and the food was excellent. At first we thought our meals looked rather small-ish but it turned out fine. Overall I'd rate Mezzanine 8/10 and I'd definitely like to go back when visiting London again."
    dined on 17/05/2013
  • "Had a lovely time at mezzanine on a Friday evening - we were probably one of three tables who were not there for the pre theatre meal but I could not discern that our food was any slower in arriving. Good service, attentive but not overly so. Lovely food - though the portions were a little on the small side. Would recommend for a pre or post theatre experience."
    dined on 17/05/2013
  • "The standard of cuisine at the Mezzanine has improved vastly over the last couple of years. The meal we had was excellent, well prepared and presented with fresh ingredients. The fish I had was superbly cooked and my companion's pork dish was also highly rated. The prices are on the high side, particularly when it comes to the wine, but this is perhaps to be expected when the location of the restaurant is taken into account."
    dined on 06/05/2013
  • "Decent food, excellent service and great views over the river if you get (ask for it!) the right table."
    dined on 28/04/2013
  • "We asked for a quiet table as this was a business meeting and the restaurant provided - excellent location on the South Bank"
    dined on 25/04/2013
  • "Met my sister here for our monthly catch up and the food was lovely. As it's mostly used by theatre goers, it was lovely and quiet once the shows had all started and we were able to have our food at a leisurely pace and have a proper natter."
    dined on 18/04/2013
  • "The plus point is that it is very convenient for the National Theatre. However the menu lacked focus in these days of themed restaurants. We have been to theatre restaurants that pick up a theme from the play and have been very excited by that."
    dined on 17/04/2013
  • "We did a pre-theatre dinner at Mezzanine on Saturday night. Food was of the usual excellent standard and the chocolate dessert was glorious."
    dined on 06/04/2013
  • "Really cant be bettered for a meal before theatre. Interesting menu, balanced wine list and no danger of missing the start! Wont brek the bank either. Staff are terrific."
    dined on 06/04/2013
  • "It couldn't be more conveniently situated for the theatres at the National. Modern, bright and very busy I was glad to have booked as people without reservations were being turned away. The selection of dishes for lunch was small and one of the choices was i available but what we did have (smoked salmon then another fish dish) was good. I also enjoyed the cinnamon ice cream."
    dined on 09/03/2013
  • "If you are seeing a play at the National Theatre, and you want a proper sit-down meal, and the weather is cold, then there is only the Mezzanine, because it is inside the theatre. And the cafe offers little seating. But writing this only 4 days after our meal, neither of us can remember what we ate at the Mezzanine. I do recall that the house red was on the verge of being sent back, service was not always available in the brief moments before the bell summoned us in to the theatre ... but we don't remember the food. Although the website promises a fixed menu, we found a la carte only:- not sensible for pre-theatre, when we all want to eat at the same time. But the food did not take too long, and we did get into our play in plenty of time."
    dined on 11/02/2013
  • "I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant and expected something sub standard, however I was proven wrong. The service was quick, the food lovely and the red wine served at the right temperature! Will definitely recommend! We had plenty of time before our film started but never felt rushed at all..... Great location too."
    dined on 10/01/2013
  • "Good value for money for post theatre dining. Lovely view if you get a table by the window. Reasonable wine list. Inside the National Theatre complex so it is the ultimate in convenience!"

  • "MEZZANINE AT SOUTHBANK IS WELL WORTH A VISIT. VERY CONVENIENT FOR ANY OF THE SOUTHBANK THEATRES AND WELL PREPARED, CONSISTENTLY GOOD FOOD."
    dined on 19/12/2012
  • "Yet another very pleasant meal at Mezzanine. The service pre-theatre is always very efficient, as everyone is seeing one of the NT shows. It was the same menu as when we last dined there - but as that was only a couple of weeks ago, I can't really moan."
