Diner Reviews
  • "Visited restaurant on 23 November for a meal before going to Sadler's Wells (only a few minutes walk away). Had scallops and cheese fondue plus some wine. Food was very good and service friendly. Restaurant is clean and tidy but not pretentious. Prices for London are reasonable. Would return if going back tom the theatre."

  • "A nice little restaurant with good atmosphere but the food was a real disappointment. Apart from a few very simple items like the tomato salad all our dishes were bland and tasteless. A restaurant is first of all about the food and this was just not good enough. We really wanted to like the place but we won't be back."

  • "highly recommend this little gem tucked away unassumingly on st johns street. tremendous food, set in cute and delicate surroundings with soft lighting, sets a very atmospheric tone."

  • "We went here prior to heading around the corner to see Hofesh Shechter's production of "Sun" at Sadlers Wells, and have nothing but praise for this small French Bistro. I had snail bourguignon, lovely and "garlicky", followed by excellent pork chops. Crème Brulee to end was spot on. 3 courses at £15.50 represent great value. Very friendly. It's a pity that Paris no longer has this type of Bistro in great numbers."

  • "We booked this little place because it was near Sadler's Wells. It won't set the world on fire but we had a perfectly fine meal for a pretheatre. There is a 2 or 3 course set meal which is good value and a nice wine list."

  • "We had an excellent dinner here and as we live nearby, this place is a real find. Great atmosphere, very friendly welcome and service throughout the meal. The chicken liver parfait was indeed parfait and the cassoulet was authentic with the added spicy twist of a merguez sausage alongside its fatter toulouse cousin. Wine was excellent and the cheese board was a fantastic guilty pleasure. Will definitely come again!"

  • "Terrific. Nice decor, staffed exclusively by delightful and attentive young French people whose English is just imperfect enough to be charming. Quick service, great food, not too pricey (although not cheap). Would definitely come back."

  • "We were looking for a restaurant that would allow us to have a relaxing meal before a 7:30 performance at Sadler's Wells and found Miz en Bouche on line after discovering that many places in the area opened too late or got mixed reviews. We were happy with the choice and the email confirmation of our reservation. The French bistro style menu is quite small but the portions are adequate and well prepared. The young staff are friendly and attentive, creating an informal atmosphere -- which explained why some local residents were having a late afternoon birthday celebration when we arrived. The prices were moderate and, of course, it was a short walk to the theatre. We will remember this place when we are next in London."

  • "fairly large family group of mixed ages for a celebratory late Saturday afternoon lunch. Very friendly staff, some of the party delayed but no pressure to order. Not a long menu but more than sufficient to suit everyone's taste & preferences. Great service when all the party finally arrived and ordered, We were quite a lively group, but hopefully did not impinge on other diners, and no hint of disapproval form the staff. Good value for money and good quality food cooked well, reasonable drinks prices. Staff happy to accommodate and serve a birthday cake provided by a family member as a surprise for me.One of the party was in a wheelchair and although the tables are high set we were able to manage. I'm happy to recommend Miz en Bouche."

  • "Miz en Bouche offers a small but varied menu and the welcome option of 500ml carafes of wine, which is perfect pre-theatre. We both had mahi mahi nicoise, which was tasty and healthy, and shared a delicious choc mousse. Very friendly service. Shape of restaurant doesn't help ambience if you're on the ground floor level, but it was a very enjoyable pre-theatre meal."

  • "We booked a table for six at Miz en Bouche in Islington as it's very close to Sadler's Wells (about three minutes' walk). We found the service very friendly, the restaurant itself although a bit rambling, does have a homely charm and the food is quite authentic. We all enjoyed our meal and said we would happily eat there again."

  • "I went with a friend. We had the dinner set menu (£15.5 for 3 courses). Food was good, portions were good too. We left happy with what we ate. Even happier considering it came to £24 per person including wine and service). I will return."

  • "We enjoyed the meal - it was a last minute booking when they couldn't accommodate us nearby, and we were glad we found this tiny atmospheric place. Excellent fresh food & good ingredients with a french note -although it did take quite a long time to get this out of the kitchen - they seemed a bit overwhelmed backstage. Service was charming throughout - more from one of the waiters than the other, but overall ok."

  • "This French bistro is conveniently located to Sadlers Wells Theatre for pre-theatre dining. Well, in theory. The tables are cramped and close together but there is a certain charm. We ordered fondue and did tell them that we were going to the theatre but we had over an hour to eat. After complaining the cheese fondue finally arrived after 40 minutes. The hot oil for the fondue bourguignonne also arrived but incredibly it took another complaint before the beef for this dish came. No apologies at any time, just gallic nonchalance. The food is actually quite decent but the rating reflects the appalling service. Try it by all means but leave plenty of time."

  • "Perfect location and value for a pre theatre dinner. Excellent, thoughtful service, one of our diners arrived late, we ordered for her and the waiter spotted her arriving and brought her meal to the table straightaway . Very good to have 500ml carafes of wine available. The food was lovely as well."

  • "We were overwhelmed by the quality of the food, and service. It felt like a very well kept secret to be able to enjoy a lovely meal, fantastic wine and great service for such good value just off the high street. Apparently others are in on the secret too though as when we arrived it was empty, but as we left just before 6.30 it was full! Can't recommend the place enough, except I'd like to keep it hush hush so we can have it all to ourselves. We'll definitely be returning to this lovely restaurant. Thank you for helping make our date so special! Definitely book in advance to avoid disappointment. Wish we'd had time for pudding! We'll have to return soon..."

  • "Pre-theatre dinner at Miz en Bouche - perfect for Sadlers Wells. Set menu at £12.50 for two courses excellent value, seasonal and delicious. Service friendly and prompt."

  • "Absolutely no good for pre theatre as service is really bad. We had to wait hours even for a drink to be brought to the table. The food arrived eventually for some of us but others were forgotten. They really need to double their staff or find some with brains!!!"

  • "Outstanding food and service, definitely recommended."

  • "our first time at Miz en Bouche in Islington for pre-theatre. A nice little bistro, polite French staff, and a varied menu. service struggled as everyone tried to get and pay their bills fifteen minutes before the show started."
    dined on 20/08/2013
  • "Very good pre-theatre fare & pleasant service. Nice choice of starter, main and pudding at reasonable price. Just 2 minutes walk to Sadler's Wells. Bench sitting on upper part of restaurant was ok, but i prefer proper table & chairs and should have been given the choice. Otherwise the four of us had a very pleasant meal with a nice bottle of cotes du rhone."

  • "Very good pre-theatre meal, prior to a show at Sadler's Wells. Friendly and efficient service."

  • "Early dinner before heading out. Was busy for the pre-show crowd but had a great seat out in their courtyard. The food was good, albeit small portioned. Attentive staff, would recommend for the price."

  • "Lovely little restaurant ideally situated for pre/post Sadler's Wells meals. Authentically French (including all the staff!) with superb food and wine, all at excellent value, given the trendy nature of the area. Very friendly and informal, with pleasant ambience. Loos are very inaccessible, however, so may not suit older clientele...."

  • "I booked a table at Miz en Bouche as I was going to Sadlers Wells. We were welcomed by very nice staff and we sat outside which was lovely. However we were then ignored for quite a while, we got some water but no one asked if we wanted wine or if we had decided on our meal. This may have been as we were outside (out of sight, out of mind!) as the staff were pleasant but they were not that busy so I couldn't understand why we had to wait so long. However, once the food arrived it was very nice and reasonably priced. I would go back but maybe sit inside so that we got served a bit quicker!"
    dined on 10/08/2013
  • "Although off the beaten track, this little treasure provided us with a relaxed and enjoyable evening. Purchased as a Groupon, I would definitely go back for full price food - excellent quality of food, wine and service, I'd recommend Miz en Bouche. We're not local but if we were, we'd head back for brunch, lunch or dinner again."
    dined on 06/08/2013
  • "This restaurant is exceptionally good value for money - the fixed lunch (2 courses for £10) was delicious and it was hard to choose between the courses. The service is very friendly and I would not hesitate to visit again."

  • "It is easy for a computer programmer to set-up, so why I ask myself, for a restaurant that does not open on a Monday, am I able to book a table at a closed restaurant? Utterly disappointing to turn up to a restaurant, that I have an email confirmed reservation for, only to find locked doors and no food. Anyway, my wife and I had a good laugh at the ridiculousness of a restaurant which does not open on a Monday - and went somewhere else and had an even greater time at the other place."
    dined on 29/07/2013
  • "This was our first time, but it won't be our last.We were most impressed. A warm welcome, a fairly short menu - which is often a good thing as it is here - delicious food and very generous portions. Perfect for a pre-theatre dinner, as it's about 2 minutes walk from Sadler's Wells. I'm sure we'll be back before long."

  • "Cosy French restaurant in Angel. Nice staff and owner. Had dinner with girlfriends, second time eating there, and we were pleased with our drinks, starters and main. However, special desert of the day - the brazilian pain perdu with red fuits and cream - was not what we expected, nor was the tarte tatin enjoyable which is a shame for such a nice restaurant! I would still recommend it because we had a great time and the food in general is lovely!"
    dined on 05/07/2013
  • "Tried Miz en Bouche for the first time. The menu selection was small, but that was nice rather than being overwhelmed with choice. We were welcomed on arrival and looked after really well. I had Chicken Liver Parfait to start, which was delicious, then for a main the Ratatouille which was very nice and finished with the chocolate mousse which was so chocolatey and delicious! Will definitely go back to try more things on the menu."
    dined on 02/07/2013
  • "Tiny, quiet restaurant near Angel which made for a nice change from other bustling dining places in the area. The menu was short but everything on there sounded delicious. I went for the beetroot and courgette risotto which was delicious and had an amazing chocolate mousse for dessert. Still dreaming about it! The service was great and quick which was much appreciated as we were heading for the theatre after dinner. The owner was very friendly and chatty and offered us a special price on the set menu. I highly recommend this place and will certainly come back."

  • "we headed to miz en bouche for a pre theatre meal, we were the only diners when we arrived which made for a strange atmosphere, but it was 5:45! the menu is short and unassuming however the quality of the cooking was very good. i was slightly disappointed with the dessert menu which seemed a bit dated, and we gave this a miss. all in all it was perfect for what we needed, good pre theatre food very near to our venue!"
    dined on 01/06/2013
  • "A pre-theatre dinner at Miz en Bouche offered high quality food with very friendly service (albeit rather slow, though we had asked to substitute a vegetarian dish for something on the set menu, to which they readily assented - which is not a common reaction). I did not really enjoy, though, having to sit on a backless bench with feet dangling."
    dined on 15/05/2013
  • "My fiance and I had a lovely meal at Miz en Bouche on Saturday night. The menu is quite small with there being only about 5 main courses to choose from but it is definitely quality over quantity. The scallops are amazing, the duck was cooked to perfection and it was all washed down with a lovely bottle of wine."

  • "This restaurant has a nice vibe. Service is very friendly and effective. The value for money is exceptional. Try the cheeseburger! One if the best I have ever had!"

  • "We went for an early pre-theatre (Sadlers Wells) meal. Exceptionally friendly and efficient service in this small French restaurant. Short menu with some daily specials. The chairs are high which some shorter people might not like. All the food was freshly cooked and the scallops and tarte tatin in particular were excellent. The very bitter cappuccino coffee was the only let-down, but when we commented, the cost was immediately taken off the bill - and done with a smile. Highly recommended."

  • "located closely to sadlers wells, went for pre theatre meal, so a little quiet as you would expect but food was very good and the service"

  • "the restaurant is little and perfect for a romance evening. It's quite and the service are very efficient and kind. The food it's excellent and it wan't expensive. I'll go back soon."

  • "It was small but modern and cute restaurant - we were in the group of 7 but group of 6 is probably the ideal largest group size. The food was very very good - particularly the cheese fondue - which was quite different from usual cheese fondue around town and lighter but with good cheese flavours. Down side is that they only have limited numbers of main course dishes and generally stated to cater for sharing (tapas) but they were very small that it was more like a starter for one. They were all so good - wish they had made bigger portions!"
