A word from Opus One Bar & Restaurant
From the day it opened, Opus One has been one of Manchester's liveliest and popular restaurants. Under the direction of head chef Matthew Downes, Opus One serves innovative modern British food that blends the best of local produce, presented in a modern, contemporary way.

The surroundings are dramatically theatrical, with soaring ceilings, velvet red walls, high gloss black woodwork, antique gold wall coverings and bespoke furniture in black crocodile skin hide.   • "We had the afternoon tea. I had the 'gentleman's' version with a pint of beer. Small portions of: fish, chips and mushy peas; roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and gravy; and a pork pie (all hot). This was followed by 3 types of sandwiches and then scones, jam and cream with a pot of tea. It was all very nice and the service was excellent. This was £22.50 (but don't forget they add 10% service charge). With the 10% added the beer, which was nothing special, was £4.40 for a pint. Overall we really enjoyed the experience and would recommend."

  • "I've eaten here a few times but not for a while. Previous experiences have been good and the staff were attentive and polite again. Unfortunately this time the fish and duck dishes that we ordered were both dull and bland, Drinks were rather overpriced - a total bill of almost £80 for two for one course and fairly ordinary wine. I think it will be a while before I go again."

  • "The cocktails were poor, the menu restricted and the overall dining experience was appalling. It was like eating in a glorified canteen with no ambiance and distinctly average food. Some years ago the cocktails and food were excellent but now my advice is to look elsewhere if you want a dining experience to remember. There are many average restaurants in Manchester that are far, far better an I for one will not be going anywhere near Opus One again. Zero points for this establishment "

  • "Food was variable and disappointing. Too complicated and not well executed. A few wine choices, from a not extensive list, were also not available. When we commented to our server, he immediately responded: "we will not charge you for those items". On the bill, the wine charge was also missing, so we called the manager. His response was: " If you had a disappointing experience, I don't want you to leave feeling you had bad value or we took advantage of you" ! He explained the new chef was introducing a simpler, more high quality ingredient menu. So, based on their attitude and willingness to admit their deficiencies, 10 out of 10. Plus, they were brilliant about my wife's gluten allergy and had prepared a menu specially for her."

  • "Went for afternoon tea on Saturday. Really nice setting, we were given a table by the window and plenty of space around the table. We were greeted and made to feel very welcome. Staff were very attentive and asked about dietary requirements (I am 8 mths pregnant and my friend is veggie!) good selection of finger sandwiches, fresh baked scones (still warm!) and small cakes. Choice of about 5 teas. Would definitely recommend for a special treat. "

  • "I booked the restaurant for my 3 year anniversary with my girlfriend. I told the restaurant it was our anniversary on the booking form and they really out-did themselves. My girlfriend had no clue I had told them! They gave us two glasses of prosecco and a dessert with 'Happy Anniversary' written in chocolate, free of charge. This was so thoughtful and made us feel very special, and accepted as a gay couple. The food was FANTASTIC! I had the steak and she had the sea bass and we were both delighted. We also had a couple of cocktails which, although pricey, were so delicious (I had the Halle Berry - fantastic)! I'd definitely recommend, and can't wait to go back again."

  • "Very disappointed that there was a £15.00 service charge. This was due to poor lighting My wife had gone to the toilet so I just paid the bill, leaving a five pound tip. It was later I realised about the service charge."

  • "Went for the £20 for two courses, have been for about a year. Waitress served the starter but got the plates mixed up, another waiter came to remove the dishes after the starter, unfortunately my partner was still finishing his. Once the main was served I asked another waiter what my sauce was, he had to go back into the kitchens to check. Just a few disappointing things that I wouldn't expect from a five star restaurant. Seems to have gone down a little from the previous times I have visited."

  • "Given that we arrived at seven o'clock it was not surprising that there were few other diners, which meant that there was little atmosphere in what is a large room. However, the room itself is imposing and airy. We chose the Marketplace menu, which, though limited, was interesting and well presented. The confit duck starter was especially good! Staff were attentive and pleasant without being overbearing. We would recommend this restaurant to friends interested in good food, well prepared and presented."

  • "We've been to Opus before and had one of the best meals ever there. Our second time eating there it was like a completely different restaurant. The food was terrible, to the point of inedible. Both of our starters were bland. For the maincourse I had a fish dish with a shellfish bisque. The smell from the bisque was unbelievable and it tasted so bitter. It was my birthday so my boyfriend kindly offered to swap with me, he had duck which is one of my favourite dishes and looked much more promising. Yet even though the centre of the duck was still nice and pink they'd managed to make it tough as old boots! We were eating on the deal menu but we also did the first time we ate there so I don't really think that that should make a difference."

  • "We came here with my parents and son for an evening meal and took advantage of the very good offer. Service was pretty good and the food was lovely. However, the choice in music was atrocious. The music would have been more suited to a trendy bar not a fine dining restaurant. It was too loud and the bass ruined conversation; I struggled to hear what the person at the end of the table was saying. Let down by a simple error."

Waiter said we would receive are coffee to drink after finishing food but waiters were hard to find and get attention off. So after 10mins it was quicker for me to go up and get the bill."

  • "We were expecting great things from Opus One.. Staff were friendly but clueless - my husband enquired about a chicken dish the head waitress replied 'oh it's just chicken, sometimes they give them fancy silly names, it's annoying really'... We had been told that they were fully booked for the evening, but it was barely half full whilst we were there & the service was quite poor, we poured our own wine twice, which is fine, but not when they put the ice bucket two tables away & we have to get up to do it. The food was quite good - but we were expecting Le Caprice standard, which it is far from. They've got the right idea but the execution is not there, & the portions are small for men, & £10 for the WORST Irish coffee I've ever tasted.."

  • "A friend and I booked a table for 2 on a Friday evening. We were disappointed to discover that the a la carte menu was no longer available and had been replaced with a limited market menu. While obviously the meal was less expensive than would have been the case previously it doesnt really sit well with the image the hotel has previously tried to create. The restaurant was quite empty , service was mediocre and overall it was a disappointment compared to previous meals here."

  • "Decided to go to Opus One for a valentine's treat having been several years ago. Unfortunately, whilst the good was OK, the experience was spoilt by poor service. Having been sat down it then took 25mins for someone to come and take our drinks order. During this time we tried to catch the eye of several staff some of whom looked at us but then did nothing (some even looked annoyed!) One of the senior staff (a lady)gave us an exasperated "a minute" sign with her finger!!! When eventually someone did take our order they were very brusque and very little attempt to be friendly (apart from the man who brought us bread who was a rare beacon of friendliness) which set the tone for the service for the rest of the meal. Won't be going again."

  • "I booked this venue for my birthday treat with my son. We really enjoyed ourselves. We had good service and the food was very good. Unfortunately we thought from the description of the food we ordered that we would not need extra potatoes/ veg so we did not order any side dishes. But, the main meals did lack these as they were only a VERY small accompaniment , certainly not enough for my son. Nevertheless the whole evening was most enjoyable. The champagne bar perhaps needed some background music to give it a little more atmosphere."

  • "Very good value for money (3 courses plus glass of prosecco for £25) however the quality of some of the food wasn't great. The amuse bouche of curried vegetarian veloute tasted a little like chip shop curry sauce. One good starter (lobster) and one bad (cold soup, with a skin on the top suggesting it had been left to stand for a while - didn't complain at this stage as gave the benefit of the doubt). Again, one good main (lamb) and one bad (pork belly with soft, gelatinous fat - eugh! - chef said that was the style it should be cooked but I've only ever eaten it with crispy fat). The side dishes of spinach and bubble & squeak were tepid at best. The pear dessert was a quite tasty creme brulee but nothing in it really tasted of pear,"

  • "We recently visited Opus one for our 5th Wedding Anniversary. I have previously visited the bar in Opus one and was impressed by the service and the ambience of the place so decided to book a table for an evening meal and our wedding anniversary seemed an ideal occasion. The decor in the restaurant is modern and chic giving a perfect ambience for a romantic meal. The service throughout was attentive, friendly and pitched just right. The food was good quality and thoughtfully presented. The belly of pork I had was awesome. Real imagine with the desserts. My wife highly recommends the Manchester trio including a shot of Vimto! All round an excellent evening. Do try the cocktails as well."

  • "Over all we have a lovely experience at Opus. 5 out of six plates where of very good quality food and extremely enjoyable. The staff were very attentive at all times and couldn't have been more helpful. If there was any issues they were happy to try to resolve the situation. My only issue was the music in te restaurant area was too loud and one of the starters was not very good. The mackerel filler starter was not what expected and not as good quality as the rest of the food"

However, we were off to the Bridgewater Hall (just nearby) and even though we only went for 2 courses, we still had to run all the way there! If you appreciate fine food and have the time to savour it, I think this restaurant provides excellent value for money. To be fair, they do not advertise the menu as pre-theatre."

  • "I booked on in the morning for 3:30pm. Due to my train being late I called Opus One to inform them of my late arrival. When i finally arrived 15 minutes late, we had no table set up so we had to wait in the bar while they set us up. After 15 mintues waiting at the bar we had a table, it was at the very back of the restaurant facing the entrance to the staff room. Other than this, it was a very enjoyable experience. I would go again."

  • "Amazing attentive service. Have eaten here quite a few times inc lunch, evening meal & most recently afternoon tea. Would highly recommend. They now do a genlemans afternoon tea which is great, mini fish & chips, Yorkshire puds & sandwiches. The ladies tea inc do many beautiful cakes & they will gladly box up for you to take home as its a struggle to finish them all! The bar & dining room have a nice warm ambience. Great menu choice & delicious food."
