A word from Orso
Opened in October 1985, Orso is a wonderful restaurant in the heart of London’s West End. From the beginning the aim was to bring authentic Italian cuisine to Covent Garden and Orso delivers.
Orso prides itself in using only the freshest and finest ingredients many of them such as extra virgin olive oil, arugula, puntarelle, porcini mushrooms, buffalo mozzarella and white truffles when in season, sourced in Italy. But it is not just about the ingredients, our meals are prepared to perfection, served on hand painted Italian tableware designed by Designers Guild and accompanied with a selection of fine Italian wines.

Orso is the perfect destination for the London diner, offering a busy but attentive service, animated atmosphere and tempting menu.

  • "We ate at Orzo ~10 years ago and loved it. That made this visit all the more disappointing. The food was bland and tasteless."

  • "We were there on Sunday night--a dead night since the theater is dark. A friend highly recommended it. It was out only night in London. We were really disappointed. It was vastly empty, no music, The food was the biggest disappoint. Too much garlic, and really nothing to write home about. During the day we stumbled on so many good places, and this one was a HUGE disappointment. We had to scratch out head in deciding what to order, and the food was just eh. Don't go there. There are much much better options in London!"

  • "everything was very nice but the sea bass was overcooked, making it tough, not so good for fish. Everything else was good."
    dined on 09/08/2014
  • "Pre theatre; Prawn cocktail; lots of lettuce and very few prawns in a watery sauce...edible but disappointing Sea bass main; tiny portion with one small fillet that was tough and over cooked with no carbs...I was close to sending this back but didn't have the time or inclination to create a fuss Semifredo for dessert which was good. Overall this was poor and I'd have scored the restaurant down and marked avoid if that was the full story! The good news was that my girlfriend did not select from the set pre theatre. She ordered; Asparagus to start Asparagus rissoto main. Both we're prepared well, good portions and cost the same as the set menu. Lesson leaned...avoid pre theatre set menu!"

  • "This was a typical London overpriced non authentic Italian restaurant. The fish was pre-prepared and reheated prior to serving - little surprise that he was hard as nails and uneatable. The pasta was very rich with peas and went against all the basic principles of a good italian pasta - keep it simple, less ingredients is more. I suppose the location of the restaurant is the only reason why it survives. People want a quick meal just before the theathre. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody."

  • "Visited orso on a weekend away with my mum for joint 30th and 60th celebrations. The restaurant was very enjoyable, extremely friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. Not too expensive for London either."

  • "The service at Orso is excellent,. The food itself is good value but some we ordered was not hot enough. The bread and oil is not special, pea soup was very good. Wine, drinks, and coffees a bit pricey."
    dined on 23/07/2014
  • "The food was mediocre and overpriced. Not 'real' Italian cooking. A shame because the wine list was good and the service very competent."
    dined on 10/07/2014
  • "Orso has improved the quality of its food and service since under new management, and this meal was the best yet at this venue. It is also very convenient to the Royal Opera, and the staff are very aware of the need for efficiency, without creating a rushed feeling. We will continue to come back."

  • "Orso never disappoints. The pre theatre menu is excellent value and they serve right quantity for early evening dining. Service is friendly and attentive without being intrusive."
    dined on 26/06/2014
  • "We had dinner there at 7.30pm with a group of 9 (with 4 children). Service staff was great with the children. The food was wonderful too. Will return on our next trip (perhaps try the pre-theatre menu)."

  • "Classic Italian dishes served promptly and efficiently. Celeb spotting possible."
    dined on 12/06/2014
  • "As we were going to the theatre, we chose the pre-theatre, fixed price, menu. This appears reasonable value and was fine, except cod main was overcooked and thus dry. For pre-theatre menus, I am afraid that there are better offers in the area for this price level, so was disappointing. Maybe the a la carte is better. Service was good and atmosphere was casual; good at that time of evening."

  • "Very good meal and excellent service highly recommend."

  • "Went for pre-theatre dinner and went for the set-menu. Both starter and main course were divine. Busy atmosphere on a early Monday evening and the staff were friendly and attentive. Thank you very much and we will be back :-)"

  • "Lovely meal with very good vegetarian options and very helpful friendly staff."

  • "The meal and service was fantastic. We love the decor of the restaurant. I will surely recomend"

  • "Portions were small, we had to ask for both wine list & dessert menue. A bit pricey for such small portions. Nice staff though."

  • "Restaurants don't always live up to expectations, but last Friday Orso definitely did, Louise our waitress was, friendly, helpful with a great sense of humour (she had to come in on her day off but still had a smile). food was fantastic, great place to celebrate my birthday in lovely ambiance. "

  • "This was an outstandingly lovely meal with great service, back like Orso’s used to be, if not better. Impossible to fault"
    dined on 16/04/2014
  • "Very pleased to find food and service still good at Orso. Went there after the Opera - very busy and people still coming in after us (11pm+) Restaurant has been refurbished since our last visit - adds to the ambience."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "very slow service, food good but not great, cost £35 a head for a starter and a small sized pasta and one small glass of wine!"
    dined on 08/04/2014
  • "We've been going to Orso since it opened in 1985 for good Italian food, great service and a buzzy atmosphere. New owners have wisely retained the same key staff whilst tweaking the menu and opening up the seating with banquettes against two walls. For post theatre/opera/concert the menu offering is perfect - we tend to stick to starters and pasta dishes offering better value and a good choice."
    dined on 06/04/2014
  • "My family enjoyed a wonderful meal at Orso celebrating my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary. We had a pre-theatre meal and from the moment we arrived at Orso we couldn't fault it. The staff were very welcoming and nothing was too much effort. The meal and wine were perfect. We chose Orso just because of its location and variety on the menu - 11 to cater for, including children! Would definitely recommend Orso!"

  • "We had a very good evening at Orso. The service was charming and the food was as reliable as ever."

  • "Went to Orso to celebrate Mothers Day had a good time. Food was nice, staff very friendly although Service was good at the beginning they failed to offer my brother and nephew drinks after giving Mothers their prosecco. My brother had to ask for a drink for himself then the waitress walked off without offering my nephew one too."

  • "I arranged this table for both mine and my husbands parents as a special treat. I couldn't have been happier with their reaction and feedback. They absolutely loved it - the place, the staff, the food - all."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Always a good place and suits all my friends who have different tastes in food, one who eats fish and veg but no meat, one who eats meat and veg but no fish. I have been going to Orso for many years and it is always a good place to meet We were not going to the theatre so had a good slot between the pre and post -theatre goers at 7. We had a party of 7 and allocated a lovely round table so could chat to everyone. Food was delicious and served well and sensitively! We had all forgotten how good Orso is!"
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "I had better expectations and was disappointed. There isn't much of an italian feel to the place. Both the starters and the mains were in my opinion overpriced. I was promised an excellent "Caciucco" but what I got was less than mediocre and did not resemble at all to the original one. Good service, friendly staff I will not go back again"
    dined on 26/03/2014
  • "This is the third time we have eaten at the restaurant and the location and menu are very good."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "Had dinner with my ex bosses on a week night and had an enjoyable evening. Orso always has a good atmosphere whatever the day of the week and the food is reliable. We all decided to have the pear, walnut, endive & rocket salad with a gorgonzola dressing for the starter which was light and delicious."
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "Don't waste your money going to Jamie's Italian, Carluccio's, Strada or Zizzi...where the chefs have probably never been in Italy based no the menu. Orso offers a delicate, smooth and genuine menu with delicacies from Southern Italy as well as other traditional ones. Great experience, delicious meal, pity for the rather "edgy" waiter, not really matching the warmth of the environment."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "Very interesting menu well executed and with decent authenticity. Polite and efficient service. Decent but over - priced wine list. My criticism is that there is no Italian vibe at all. It could benefit from a slightly more relaxed feel and an Italian or two in the waiting staff! The Manor Brasato was good enough to outweigh this quibble!"

  • "Outstanding value set price lunch - the food was outstanding with great service"
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "Went there with my wife on a very busy Saturday night and was glad to have booked through Toptable. We got what appeared to be one of the better tables for two on the night. The number of covers Orso can accommodate appears to have reduced recently (due to refubishment?) but the menu has been revamped positively and the wine list includes many vintages from lesser known parts of Italy which are outstanding in taste and value. Another recent innovation is the opportunity to sample several grappas at the end of the meal (at a reasonable price) without having to commit to just one! Orso remains authentically Italian, in my opinion, and is definitely one of the better Italian restaurants in this area of Theatreland."
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Orso has a great atmosphere - buzzy without being noisy. And the set menu this time was particularly good value for lunch."
    dined on 19/02/2014
  • "Always a warm and friendly welcome ,and the food is consistently good . Prices seem competitive for this part of London and there's plemty of drninkable wines at under £30"
    dined on 17/02/2014
  • "Excellent for special occasions when you would be less concerned about the cost. You can expect absolutely top quality food, served in a comfortable and romantic environment. Tables are well positioned so you don't end up within hearing distance of another table and the servers are very attentive (I.e. There when you need them, gone when you don't). Only issues were the 2 hour time limit. Our meal (including starters and mains for 4 people but only 2 desserts and 2 mediocre bottles of wine came to £70 per person - £280 in total for a table of 4) this is clearly very different to the Top Table guide price of £26-40 I will be returning, but only when I've saved up for a VERY long time or when someone else is paying."

  • "Very good food and the service was excellent and friendly. Great for a night out before the theatre."
