Diner Reviews
  • "This is our favourite London restaurant and the first place we think of when we have overseas visitors. the atmosphere is unique and the food never fails t lease. Wonderful"
    dined on 15/07/2014
  • "Super food and a wonderful setting - absolutely gorgeous in good weather"
    dined on 12/07/2014
  • "The setting at Petersham Nurseries was amazing. So unique. The food was full of flavour and the attention to great ingredients is clear. We were lucky with the weather, and I would say there is no restaurant more beautiful in the sunshine."
    dined on 09/07/2014
  • "Fantastic to see flower petals in the dishes - just what you expect from a nursery - disappointed in the lack of variety of leaves in salad and dishes. Sardines and squid were great. Odd to see a fish stew on the menu on such a hot day. As others have said very high prices sets the bar very demandingly high on expectations. Setting fabulous on a really hot day"
    dined on 01/07/2014
  • "We'd been waiting for a special occasion to justify the visit and it didn't disappoint. The day was beautiful and the food and service was wonderful. The prices are at the high end of special occasion, nonetheless."
    dined on 29/06/2014
  • "Birthday lunch with my husband and we were both unimpressed by the fare. All dishes we ate, including the dessert, were very oily and husbands chicken main course overalls salty. Ambience was wonderful, service below average. We'll definitely be visiting again but won't spend our money in the cafe again, it's not worth it."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "The Petersham looks amazing. As befits an actual garden nursery, the tables and plants work perfectly together. And the food is gorgeous and uses lots of garden produce. A great place to go to treat someone or for a special occasion."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "Beautiful setting, perfect for a summer lunch. Good seasonal food but too expensive."
    dined on 26/06/2014
  • "Popular for a very good reason, this is a gorgeous place... set in a romantic greenhouse just back from the Thames in a refulgent patch of land between Richmond and Petersham. Parking is a ruddy nightmare so for heaven's sake take a tow path stroll, the bus or cycle. And bring your whole paycheck because this is not cheap. In fact it is eye wateringly expensive, but for such an unusual spot and such creative food, you can justify it all. We wandered the gardens after our lunch and buoyed by the food and the ambience (and possibly lightly lubricated by the wine) had a wistful moment amongst the roses where we actually believed we were worth it. A once a year extravagance for lunch, but actually quite reasonable for tea. P.s. Fido is welcome."
    dined on 20/06/2014
  • "The service was haphazard and, while not being rude, was not good. The food was not special. We had to ask to move to a slightly quieter table. I had also booked this as a birthday lunch and I'd requested that a candle be added to my partner's dessert. I called shortly before arriving to remind them and was assured that it was noted. There was no candle. If the restaurant was half the price this may be acceptable but, as it is consciously premium priced, this is unlikely to result in good reviews."
    dined on 19/06/2014
  • "Petersham is avery special and unique place. The food is outstanding. Always seasonal and totally different to usual "restaurant food".If you're a good cook yourself it's a bit like your own cooking but much much better. The way they layer flavours is exceptionally clever. I have been to Petersham many, many times and am rarely disappointed. My daughter and I went a couple of weeks ago and had the most divine Lobster Tagliatelle. I am always treated like a very special guest which makes the experience all the more enjoyable. I am exceptionally fortunate to have it on my doorstep."
    dined on 10/06/2014
  • "I never tire of this place - I keep coming back with various friends, family and business acquaintances who all love it, too. It has such a special ambience and the food never, ever disappoints. My only regret is that as I live in France part of the year I can't visit it more often!"
    dined on 10/06/2014
  • "It really wasn't the 'wow' I was hoping for. The food was good but not fantastic as was the service. The place is quirky, interesting and busy but overall it could have been much better. I wanted to like the experience more than I actually did. The food was fine as was the service (young Scotsman from Edinburgh was very nice), it's just that we were hoping for more on my wife's birthday. The Prosecco (House) was totally devoid of flavour, the sommelier was uninterested in engaging with us and our wine didn't arrive with the main course. Coffee was served in a chipped and dirty cup which nobody noticed or attended our table to change it. Clearly you do a lot well but somehow you missed the opportunity to impress us."
    dined on 04/06/2014
  • "A beautiful sunny day set the scene for a truly delicious meal accompanied by fine wine recommended by the sommelier. Excellent service in a relaxed environment reminiscent of the south of France."
    dined on 18/05/2014
  • "An amazing and unique restaurant with superb food, excellent service and the most beautiful surroundings. If you fancy an afternoon that truly allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of London, experience a sublime taste experience in the most relaxing and picturesque surroundings, then this is it. Amazing food and in the most stunning surroundings."
    dined on 16/05/2014
  • "A gorgeous setting on a gorgeous day but the young wait staff in the restaurant did not seem professionally trained and the food was a bit dull for the money. I was really waiting for a 'wow' factor but it didn't happen. I would return but only for lunch in the cafe. "
    dined on 15/05/2014
  • "The menu wasn't creative enough, the fresh garden salad was some rocket and basil leaves, which tasted very bitter, without any tasty dressing. In general food presentation and the variety of the dishes were rather disappointing. The service was friendly but not professional. The prices compared to a high end London city center restaurant are too high - value for money is fair but mainly because of the outstanding location/ambience."
    dined on 11/05/2014
  • "It was all very pleasant and lived up to the desires "must go there for the experience kind of place"!! I booked it for my birthday and my guests loved the ambience and the menu ! Success i thought ! yet The service started as good intentions but slowly became aparent we were not that vip from having food come at different times with various waiters, I think we were kindly reminded that our booked time slot had been the last of the sittings a bit too much. Such a shame that it tainted our experience, but issues were resolved when the bill came. Which came as we had desserts and while we turned one waiter away we were set on by another minutes later waving a soiled tea towel in his hand. We left slightly sulky but well fed...but will return."
    dined on 04/05/2014
  • "A warm Sunday the place was particularly gorgeous, a real labour of love in outdoor decorating. Stone's throw from the river but luckily free of bugs. Elegant but welcoming feel. Many dined with their (well-behaved) pet dogs! We drank elderflower and mint cordial, apple juice. Hard to find the restaurant, but aren't the best ones tucked away? Delicious, fresh organic and homemade fare: starters freshly baked "real" bread with amazing olive oils, scallops, fresh creamy mozzarella salad, Mains excellent pork belly white beans apple sauce/succulent grilled haddock with sautéed new potatoes, and salad. More potatoes ordered, as portions small. We booked 10 days in advance in a Bank Holiday Sunday. We weren't rushed, but the food took its time!"
    dined on 04/05/2014
  • "Good lunch with cheerful staff. The Chocolate Nemesis was a truly wicked pud, one of the best I've had in years. Car Parking and Access for cars is the real problem, but i went on a Bank Holiday weekend, so maybe it was exceptional."
    dined on 04/05/2014
  • "In spite of the dismal damp weather the venue for lunch was delightful; the service was excellent, friendly, helpful & not too intrusive. There was the nice added touch of a birthday candle & this was appreciated by our birthday guest. As a vegetarian I was disappointed with the limited main course options, so I opted for the vegetarian starter. I did think the prices were excessive but it did not spoil this special occasion."
    dined on 25/04/2014
  • "My guest was very late and everyone was kind and accommodating. Sometimes, as a lone woman, one can feel patronised. Not so here. The service is lovely. It's a nourishing experience on many levels. I always come away feeling that the world's a nicer place."
    dined on 24/04/2014
  • "We hadn't been for almost 2 years, and we were delighted to find that the food is still out of this world amazing. The place itself was always and still is uniquely beautiful. It's just one of the best places in the world. Worth every penny."
    dined on 20/04/2014
  • "Wonderful food in beautiful surroundings. Wine list was excellent too."
    dined on 20/04/2014
  • "Loved the location, service and food. Attentive service, tasty fresh food with amazing presentation, outstanding location and setting"
    dined on 18/04/2014
  • "The best aspect of Petersham nurseries is the environment, in which you feel many miles away from the city. The restaurant itself is very different to anything else in London, with tables amongst many plants and old furniture items. The food at Petersham was excellent, if a little over priced, and it was disappointing that they did not have an alcohol license on Good Friday. The only slight criticism is that it took some time to get served and be presented with our bill. Overall however, an excellent place to eat lunch out if you want fresh, seasonal food in a different environment. "
    dined on 18/04/2014
  • "Great ambience and very good food. Somewhat pricey but worth the experience. Proud of the " slow food" approach and we all enjoyed our meals. Book well in advance!"
    dined on 13/04/2014
  • "Such beautifully whimsical surroundings and utterly delicious food but still very questionable whether it deserves the high price tag as I have eaten equally delicious and well sourced food for half the price. Perfect for a specially occasion but it is over priced."
    dined on 12/04/2014
  • "I made sure to let Petersham Nurseries know that it was my mother-in-law's birthday but they did nothing to make it special for her. I needn't have bothered. In fact the meal took a long time coming and the staff were more interested in the people around us they seemed to know. No real greeting on entry, we had to stand around until a couple who came in behind us were seated. Not a very special day for an 83 year old. Quite different to a previous visit."
    dined on 09/04/2014
  • "Great ambience ... little pricy, so expectations of food quality was high ... lamb dish was done very well, but unfortunately came luke warm to the table. Service was good. But had to wait for my steak knife half way through the meal."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "I had wanted to go here for sometime and my birthday gave us the excuse as we knew it was deeemed expensive. Fantastic atmosphere on a beautiful sunny day. We parked at Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park and walked down to the Petersham Gate on a glorious day, harder walking back up after a splendid meal though! Food superb, service excellent and environs unusual and very special. Really appreciated the "coffees on the house" gesture after a bit of a misunderstanding with the cheese order. A rival for The River Cafe for flavours and much closer to home. A very very good restaurant."
    dined on 01/04/2014
  • "Petersham Nurseries has such character with food served at mix-matched tables on a wonky clay floor in a greenhouse. But at our last visit, it felt as if they took it for granted that because of this, people will continue to book. We went on mother's day and the lamb in their words: 'wasn't up to standard', which left veal as the only meat and not everyone liked to eat veal. That said, the food was excellent but gosh it was expensive. And the service was slow. I would recommend Petersham Nurseries but for the cafe next door to the restaurant. Great food, self-service cafe and still eaten in a beautiful greenhouse."
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "I'd been wanting to go to Petersham Nurseries for a really long time and was so glad I finally made it - just wish it had been earlier. The venue is absolutely beautiful and such a lovely, rustic, relaxing atmosphere, excellent service, yummy and seasonally fresh food - highly recommend and looking forward to going back!"
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "This place is unique and always delivers - long may it stay just how it is. I have never been disappointed and everyone I have ever taken there wants to go again. The food is spot on and confident and the service friendly."
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "Nice place, nice atmosphere, good service, very relaxed afternoon out"
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "The food is wonderful and the atmosphere delightful. A lunch place for sure. It's an airy , daylight-filled space . The cuisine is not as spectacular as when Skye Gynghall was chef, but still lovely. I will say it I s simple and perfect fare -but I feel it's way overpriced- lunch for 3 with 3 glasses of wine came in at £200.00! A little painful that. But a visit to Richmond Park is a great day out with lunch here."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "We've been at Petersham Nursery before and didn't make a booking for the restaurant so we had lunch at the cafeteria (also very nice). But we returned for lunch in the restaurant. The ambiance is very special as the restaurant is located in a greenhouse. The tables are not next to eachother so you all feel a bit like having a private dinner. The decor with lots of fresh flowers and plants is something special. Having said thath the food alone is a reason one its one to go. Lovely fresh produce, scrumptious bread and an elaborate menu to pick from. We will definitely come back another time!"
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Delightful venue and charming service don't make up for the fact that the food is no longer very special (it once was) and seems stupidly expensive, for what it is. The menu looked interesting but salsify in pallid, flabby batter wasn't an inspiring start. A creamy cheese pasta stuffing was better. Though the dishes look pretty enough, the quantities are mean which makes the stiff prices even more offensive."
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "Sadly, my partner and I were forgotten about after we were shown to our table. No one came to us to offer drinks or water for quite a while until we waved. The rack of lamb was a little under done but I didn't mind, though a steak knife would've been very helpful. Every other dish we had was great and very well executed. Our wine orders were unfortunately again forgotten and we had to ask another waiter for them. All in all, the food was fine and the atmosphere was good but the service was cold and we left feeling unwelcome."
    dined on 16/02/2014
  • "As ever, the food was good and the service was informal but efficient. And the setting is, if course, a big plus. But my dessert was overcooked and some menu items are overpriced. We had a great time and will go again, but even though Petersham hardly positions itself as a budget venue - and you book, knowing that it isn't - some thought needs to be given to value for money"
