A word from Pica Pica
An underground tapas bar near the Millennium Stadium, Pica Pica brings a little sunshine to rainy Cardiff.
This cocktail and tapas bar is located in what was the last remaining bonded warehouse in the city and is the brainchild of three former cocktail shakers.
It's a basement bar so you descend a few steps to find the tiled bar itself in the middle of the room under an arched brick ceiling. Lots of stools line the bar and there's exposed brickwork, with other parts of the walls painted warm colours. Elsewhere there's booth seating along the walls and on brown leather sofas.
There is Heineken on draught alongside Moretti and Amstel, but all the other beers are in bottles. There are plenty of spirits at the bar and a good range of cocktails including Spanish Fizz & the house special is Pica Pica Hurricane which is made to a secret rum! A touch of Mediterranean style is always welcome in the Welsh capital.

  • "Food was really tasty and very good value; £25.50 for 7 dishes between two, which was loads. Really enjoyed salt cod fishcakes and the polenta chips. Service attentive and bar made up cocktail for us that wasn't in menu. Enjoyable evening. "

  • "Service was very slow both at the bar and for food. I spent approxmately 20 minutes waiting each visit to the bar. We were told that drinks could not be served to the table which I have never experienced before. Our table was situated by the toilet (very drafty) and I was constantly having to move to allow people to squeeze past me, and having staff carry food over my head. Food was reasonably priced and fairly tasty. Waitress was very accommodating however probably due to lack of staff, very slow. We had to ask to have our order taken and could easily have left without paying thats how much attention we were paid throughout the eveing."

  • "Food was good, good value, had to wait ages at the bar to order though."

  • "Very limited staff and also order about 20 dishes of the tapas menu. When food was ready it didn't come out together and took about 20min from the first dish to the last dish to come out, so after 2 dish was eaten between 6 people we then had to wait"

  • "Great cocktails but avoid being seated at the tall tables. The stools are really uncomfortable and the tables aren't big enough for more than a few dishes (not great when ordering tapas). Also avoid Saturday night if you want a quiet meal, it's really busy and noisy. Good for parties."

  • "ate here on a weekend in cardiff after a friend told me about it and wanted to go to a nearby bar it is advertised as a tapas which we were looking forward to but menu seemed to be more greek delacasies rather than spanish which tapas is. Food was very good though no complaints there but music was way too loud in my opinion difficult to make conversation maybe im getting old but did not expect it to be that loud at the detriment of our conversation.enjoyed the meal but probably would not return."

  • "I enjoyed my time in Pica Pica, I've never been there before, and thoroughly enjoyed the food and drinks! Staff were very friendly, and service was quick and there was a great atmosphere. The only thing I wasn't very pleased with having booked the table, was that we were a group of six and we were squished onto a small table and benches that made it really uncomfortable. They couldn't offer us another table so we had to steal a couple of chairs and awkwardly two people had to sit on the end."

  • "We went as a group of 5 for tapas on a sat night. Albeit the menu dies say please state if you want your food to come together, we didn't think each dish would come one by one 10mins minimum apart. The young waiter was lovely but there were two large parties with us who were not impressed. The food was ok, but a lot of the experience was down to poor communication. Half way through bringing out dishes, they then told us they didn't have two items so we had to reorder. If would have bed. Helpful to know this when we ordered!!"

  • "Second time we visited this place. First time had a nice evening so we thought we would return with friends. We sat down and ordered our drinks which took a long time to arrive. We were then informed that there were 9 dishes on the menu that they did not have. Hardly saw the waiters apart to deliver the food and rush off again so only one drink was had. Will not be going back."

  • "My girlfriend and I were both looking forward to eating some nice tapas. Pica pica came recommended by a friend. We were really dissapointed. The calamari was dry and rubbery, the cocktails tasted of soada water, the cooked chorizo in red wine was cold and the chicken pate (that we didn't even order) tasted of nothing. Our patatas bravas and meat balls did not arrive and they didn't have any strawberrys for my cocktail so I had to order something else. Out of all the empty tables, they sat us right next to a large party. I would not recommend Pica Pica to anyone. Very poor. Thanks"

  • "Definitely will not be dining in future at Pica. We were waiting an hour between starters and main. ordered off the set menu aswell? It put a complete dampener of the night. What should've been a pleasant evening, was just shockingly poor in all areas. The service at the bar is sooooo slow!!! With only one barman at the bar nearest restaurant, after 20 min wait to be served we ended up walking round to the other bar&waited a further 10. When ordering cocktails, they seem too also take forever to be made! The waitresses were v.apologetic. I too had to apologize to my group of friends as I had made the booking. Saying tapas&cocktails should be agreat night. Every area was poor. I will not be eating here or drinking here again"

  • "after not being in Cardiff for years we decided to use the restaurant. The food was top quality tapas but what let us down was the noisy atmosphere, which I feel could have been helped if we had not been on a table so close to the bar. Understandably this could not be helped but we had pre booked our table a.month in advance and had seemed to be shoved in on the worst pre booked table. This actually ruined our evening giving my partner a migraine and unfortunately as much as the food was great we were let down heavily by poor table management."

  • "Went to Pica Pica pre Wales v Ireland Rugby. The venue was definitely more for drinkers than diners that day. Crowds, loud music, slow service and poor (plus that day over-priced) food made the experience uncomfortable with invited guests. We have eaten pre match at many Cardiff restaurants and fully understand the pressures of the day, but others cope. I really did not appreciate being made to drink my wine from a plastic cup after having difficulty persuading the staff that we could be left in charge of the bottle itself! Will not be back."

  • "It would be better to describe pica pica as a bar that sells snacks. It is not a restaurant. My sister & I went there and the place was heaving. Our reserved table was right in the middle of a standing group. We would not have heard ourselves think. Having tables next to a group area like that isn't the best. A lovely barmaid set us up elsewhere even tho they were fully booked. Food took an age to come & half was lukewarm at best. The waitress actually served our food to a different table, then eventually plonked it on ours with a smile. Each dish is petite, smallest tapas servings I have ever had. The toilets were vile & no loo roll in from the beginning of our evening. Has potential but fails to deliver. We won't be going there again."

  • "We went to pica pica for a date night, food was lovely but the waitress was way too keen, she may as well have sat at our table with us. She missed a dish out from our order and didn't tell the kitchen we wanted a couple of dishes for starters then the rest to come out all together after a break. Luckily the man that served the dishes sorted our order out and the missed dish didn't appear on the end bill."
