Diner Reviews
  • "Nice environment alongside the river. The sofa chairs became uncomfortable for eating after a while. Food was excellently prepared and cooked but was pricey. There was not a great choice and for a Scottish chain it would have been nice to see the likes of venison and other game on offer. We though over £5 for a bottle of water excessive. Wine and beers were also over priced. Portions were adequate though a vegetable accompanyment with the main course was an obvious ommission, unless you paid an extra £5! Service was excellent though we thought a bit over the top. We were asked how we were enjoying our food no less than 4 times by 4 different waiters."

  • "Enjoyed the beautiful view across the Thames - nice menu - beautifully presented and we had excellent service . Can't say fairer than that really !"

  • "We enjoyed our evening. It is a lovely setting by the river and the staff are pretty good. The food was good, but not outstanding. One of our desserts was poor. We did tell the waiter and received an apology from the chef (via the waiter). We were not charged for this, but it would have been clever to perhaps have given us coffee too. Good wine list."

  • "We had the most delicious lunch at The Riverside Restaurant last Sunday. There were 5 of us and we all were delighted with our choice of dishes. The service was friendly and efficient and everything was presented really well. A lovely restaurant to spend an afternoon. We will definitely return."

  • "This was our first trip to the Compleat Angler and it will not be our last. Excellent food, excellent wine/drinks, excellent staff. Well presented, perfectly prepared and delicious food. Beautiful views of the river nearby. Friendly and genuinely happy and helpful staff. Ok so its not cheap, but in this case I think its a good thing and well worth it. We will be going back and taking other people with us!"

  • "Location is fantastic. Some staff were overwhelmed by a restaurant that was half full, though did remain polite. Waited over 20 mins for one main course, which was credited from the bill. Waited a long time to get pre meal drinks. Food was good but not spectacular. Experience could be so much better by making a few improvements."

  • "This is a lovely setting right on the River Thames. Both the main restaurant and the conservatory are beautifully decorated and overlook the river. There was a choice of a la carte and a set menu, both of which offered excellent choice. The food was well-cooked and beautifully presented. Considering the standard of food and the setting the price was very reasonable. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Overall it was a great dining experience and I would recommended the Compleat Angler for those wanting good cuisine in beautiful surroundings."

  • "The Manager and Manageress (both Portuguese) were very good, but the other male staff were dressed very scruffily and had no idea how to serve Champagne or pour wine. The food was so-so, the Menu very small (not much choice) but the location was very good."

  • "Having read previous reviews we were concerned about whether we had made a mistake booking here, however I can honestly say I could not fault anything. We had Sunday lunch for our wedding anniversary and it was amazing. The service was fantastic they could not have been more appropriate. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone for a special occasion."

  • "We went to the Compleat Angler for lunch on the 18th July with long term friends (four of us) and we requested a table by the river in the sunshine which the staff arranged for us. Really, nothing was too much trouble. The food was great, our party had a mixture of both the table d'hote and al a carte menus and all the dishes were up to the same high standard. Two of our party had fish (Black Bream) which was delicate and two had the fillet steak which was melt in the mouth."

  • "We went to the Compleat Angler for our wedding anniversary and booked for a Friday evening at 1930hrs. Arriving early we booked in and went to sit on the veranda overlooking the river with the waiter saying he would come and take our pre-dinner drinks order. After 20 minutes with no-one coming to the table we decided to go into the restaurant. We ordered wine which was fine and had tap water. The scallop starters were excellent, but the main course where I ordered beef fillet and my wife had pork was nothing special. Several waiters and waitresses came to the table, but the general service was poor given the reputation of the Riverside and the hotel. We left have paid over £120 for a meal that was OK but nothing special"

  • "I took my wife to the Riverside restaurant for her birthday and although the food was very good and the location excellent the service unfortunately ruined the experience. Their were huge gaps between courses, we asked for water and waited 15 min before asking again and finally getting attention. At times we felt invisible, even when asking for the bill! We had to get up and pay on the door. A pity because it could easily have been a great meal. Steve Oxley"

  • "Good value for money for 3 courses which included a choice of cheese or a dessert which is unusual. All staff were very attentive but not overly so. Would recommend this restaurant."

  • "Limited food choices and service substandard. Waiters were very attentive to other tables just not ours, very inconsistent."

  • "Been wanting to go there for some time so was disappointed when: no maitre d' came to look after us, Then we were left outside forgotten about. Then when the drinks menus were given to us we were forgotten about again. Then had to ask to be seated. Then the original drinks came after our wine had been ordered. The food however was good (if a little small). And then the waiters were thrown yet again when my partner asked for a warm brandy. Not really that crazy an ask! Wouldn't go back unfortunately."

  • "I liked the food a lot. Smoked salmon starter was high quality and our main courses were good - only gripe was my "medium" lamb was very red. Needed a little bit more to be properly pink. The service however wasn't at the same standard. The staff are pleasant but very amateurish. We arrived at 6.50, just before the appointed hour of 7 to be told that the restuarant opened at 7 and we would have to sit on the terrace and have a drink. No problem with this except that we sat for 20 minutes waiting to get some service. Gave up went back to the Restaurant where I had to repeat my name to different staff because two people with the same surname had booked and this was too much to cope with. And so it went on, nothing major but enough to annoy"

  • "A special lunch for my mother. The staff helped with little touches - personalised menu, presenting the cake. the food was delicious although portions rather small so you may want to order some extra veg."

  • "It is a long time since we visited the Compleat Angler - it was always a favourite but just fell off the radar. It was every bit as good as we remembered and not in the slightest 'hotel restaurant' just simply gorgeous stand alone views to die for and outstanding food."

  • "Brilliant dinner, excellent service, nice venu, and a very good value. We enjoyed a lot."

  • "We took my parents for their 50th wedding anniversary and it did not disappoint! Beautiful setting, friendly and helpful staff and very good food. Four of us had the market lunch which was amazing value and a good variey of choices. My dad had the al la carte menu as he wanted a steak, and it was according to him delicious! A lovely afternoon had by all, my only gripe, as with most decent restaurants these days, is the overpriced alcohol. We had a bottle of cava for £36 which was very nice but dad did decide to forgo the £10 glass of red wine he wanted with his steak! "

  • "We arranged this for my mother in laws 80th birthday and wasn't disappointed. The service was very good and the meal was the best roast dinner I have had in any restaurant but it was rather expensive. When it came to paying we paid by debit card on the hand held machine that the waiter brought to the table. He told us that there was no wifi signal so could not process the payment at the table and walked off with the card in the machine. My husband should have been asked to accompany him but it all happened so fast and by the time I realised what had happened it was too late. The very reason that they have hand held machines is so that you card does not leave you sight. Please look into the matter of the bad wifi signal. Thank you"

  • "The hotel has a stunning location for which there is a very high premium on the prices I would normally expect to pay for the quality of meal provided. No "amuse bouche", but there should be at these prices. Starter miserly in size (£11 for three asparagus pieces!). Main course of lamb was very good dish. British cheese board was excellent. Wines good quality, but no nibbles with pre-dinner drinks (again should be at these prices), drinks waiters tardy in serving them and charged us for the wrong drinks at the end. "

  • "The service was extremely poor.It was a lovely evening and we sat at a table on the river terrace..Although we had announced ourselves we waited app 20 mins without service. Finally I was forced to go and fetch our drinks from the bar.The barman began to moan and groan to me ,saying his hours were too long and he was too hot to work ! I then asked to speak to the manager, but the restaurant manager appeared (for the first time ,on this a busy evening) and attempted to take control. My wife was ,by this time very upset ,and although we ate a passable meal(albeit expensive) the damage had been done."

  • "An excellent meal in an excellent hotel. Stunning riverside view. Delicious food. Excellent wines - poured by an expert sommelier from the bottle at your table even when you buy by the glass. Smooth friendly service. Buzzy bar with pianist creates charming ambience. All in all a v pleasant night out."

  • "Went to bar and asked for wine list, explained we would be on river terrace. Told waiter would come to take order. After 10 minutes tried to return to bar through door we had used to get out but it was locked. Found a waiter, ordered a bottle of white wine. It came. No ice bucket. Another waiter would bring this. After a further 10 minutes we again asked for an ice bucket. An ice bath arrived with water and the waiter returned later with ice. We had booked for Afternoon Tea. Food was delicious. Second pot of tea was awful. Far too much loose tea in the pot. When we asked for the bill, the wine we drank earlier was not included and we had to remind them to add it. This was a special wedding anniversary treat, not a good overall experience"

  • "It is very peaceful looking out to the river and the church opposite the restaurant. The service was good but not enough waiters. The food is a bit on the salty side. My scallop starter and 21days matured beef are both too salty for me. I did not want to change them as I do not want my friends to wait for me when my dish has to be prepared again. Overall it's a good restaurant and I will visit again."

  • "We booked for a special occasion and had high expectations. The service was very good and attentive and nice breads to start. Then things went downhill. We both ordered crab ravioli. The pasta was too thick and the crab was completely overpowered by a sauce that was too strong. For a main we ordered monkfish, which was overcooked and sea bass which was nice but nothing special. Desert was pecan pie which I expected to be hot which was cold and mango mousse which was nice. Considering the very large bill that arrived we both felt the food could have been more special. "

  • "Having drooled over the a la carte menu on the website, and already made my choice, imagine my suprise and disappointment when we were told there was only the fixed price menu------- The choice of mains was very limited, and the overall price expensive. Even the wine we wanted had 'sold out'. On the plus side, the service was better than last time, although when we asked adout dessert wine the waitress didn't know what we wanted, and I had to suggest she ask for the somelier. For the price of this meal we could have gone into london."

  • "This was not our first visit but it confirmed that this is a great place to have dinner and just relax and enjoy the atmosphere, the service and the food. We made a special trip to have dinner here, with a car and driver from London, and we were not disappointed. It was the same as we experienced in the past, just a few years ago and the first time we eat there almost 30 years ago. That has to give this restaruant a first class star for continuing to provide delicious food, great service and a beautiful atomosphere (being on the river, across from the chapel, etc.). A must do if you are in London or that area of England. Ernie from San Diego, California"

  • "This is a lovely place to come for that special occasion but our evening was spoild by the wrong main being brought to me and i did not see it for a moment as my wife was just saying to me her lamb looks fab & I was just going to say well my fish looks a bit odd and then to realise it was a flat bit of chicken! The waiter looked a bit confused, but then they realised it was not Brill! I said to my wife to start hers as I thought they would just get the right dish, but it took nearly 10mins to come & when it did the fish was over done to me. They did give us a free pudding!! but that did not make up for us going out to dinner togeather for only one of us to be eating!! HA!!! But we will go back next year."

  • "We took my parents to Bowaters for their 80th birthdays and we were not disappointed. The food was unusual and beautifully presented and there was a lot of choice. The view over the river is lovely so it was the perfect setting for our celebration."

  • "What a great location. Lunch outside in the sun, under a shade, right next to the river, on a Sunday in September. There were quite a few large parties of 8/10/more and because of that I guess there weren't many outside. When I was shown to my inside table I asked if we could eat outside instead and it was no problem. The food was very good, service very nice and a really enjoyable lunch all round."

  • "The food was very good, fantastic flavour and a good selection of dishes. Service was great until a large group arrived after us. It seemed the waiting staff weren't assigned tables, so we had to get their attention rather than a dedicated waiter keeping an eye on our table. The staff were obviously flustered about serving such a large table, which led to a drop in standards for the rest of the restaurant. It seemed the whole waiting staff were serving that one table. The kitchen were obviously aware of the large group as our orders came flying out! Within minutes of our starters being removed our mains had arrived, which left us feeling rushed."
    dined on 18/08/2012
  • "If the weather is warm and sunny then Bowaters provides a lovely setting by the Thames to enjoy a drink and a meal. The menu is creative and not too expensive, and the lamb and hake dishes we enjoyed were excellent. The choice of drinks is wide, but some are expensive. Service was not quite perfect, a side dish order appeared to get lost in the kitchen, but serving staff realised and fixed it. A good venue when you want a relaxed, high quality meal."
