Good food and excellent, attentive service. An ideal venue for something special like a birthday celebration. We have been here many times, mainly for breakfasts, but the Sunday Lunch set menu was very good and although not cheap, was definitely worth the visit.

Absolutely gorgeous meal. Ate every bit even though plate was massive. Disappointed at first as the beef Wellington runs out so we couldn't have it on our visit. But meal chosen by all was too satisfying.

I had a booking for 2 people for lunch at midday. The entrance is via stairs/lift which leads up to a small and narrow reception area. When we arrived we were met by a queue of people waiting to be seated. It was quite crowded. The staff remained cool, calm and polite throughout however and dealt with the build up efficiently. On being shown to our table, it became apparent that the dining floor was very busy. There was a cacophony of sound. The breakfast service was coming to a finale. There was a real buzz about the place, almost matching the energy of the busy market below. It all looked great but was this the place for a very quiet and quiet lunch? Initially we were seated at a terribly badly positioned table, right next to a waiters station. This area was a hive of activity with obligatory crashing of plates and cutlery. Within about 5 minutes of being seated however, the breakfast crowd left and the feeling of hustle and bustle subsided. We asked to be moved to a different table as we could see some were becoming free. We were then given a delightful table at the window overlooking the market below. We had a very good lunch experience. The food was excellent. I highly recommend the Rib Eye steak and the Beef Wellington was a treat too. We added a couple side dishes, a carafe of wine and had a delicious lunch for just over £100. We thought it was very good value. We will return to eat at Roast soon.

We had dinner there for my husband's birthday and when I booked I asked for a good table with a view of Borough Mkt. We were seated at really great table and the food was really good - two of us had the lamb which melted in the mouth. Prices are on the steep side but portions are generous and it was all delicious. None of us had room for dessert but they marked my husbands birthday with a small ice cream on a decorated plate with a candle - it was discreet, and a lovely gesture which I hadn't asked for. Definitely appreciated. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I don't like having a 2 hour slot for dinner. I knew this when I booked so can't really complain about it, but we had a been having such a nice time with friends and then the waitress very politely told us we needed to give up the table as the next booking had arrived. Bit of a shame really but that's just their policy. I would definitely go back there and with our family too for lunch. Highly recommend you give it a to!

I have visited Roast many times and always been very impressed. However, when my three friends and I went for Sunday lunch we were less than impressed by the service. The waiters forgot about us on numerous occasions, for example the couple next to us (who arrived later) received a bread basket and drinks while we were still trying to get the waiter's attention to order and then our drinks didn't turn up until after we had finished our starters. Because of the very slow service we were then at the table longer than our allocated time slot of two hours, and subsequently made to feel that this was our fault. Again, I am normally very impressed by Roast but on this occasion the service was poor and took away from the quality of the food.

I have been coming here for ages, but last Friday I have to say that the meal we had was a tad disappointing.... The fish pie was dry, and they kindly took it back to the kitchen and bought it back but it was still lacking in the sauce.. The purple sprouting broccoli was not cooked properly at all and really hard to eat, but after the fish pie we didnt say anything. I love this place... but has the chef changed, or maybe because it was really busy:/9

Breakfast at Roast used to easily be the best around but little changes are spoiling that. There used to be little pats of butter, sauces were Tiptree rather than Heinz, the food has become a little too greasy. Perhaps standards need to be reset.

I really enjoyed every minute of my time at Roast on Sunday 2nd November. Wasn't sure what to expect as previous reviews had talked about slow service but everything was perfect. Didn't know whether to expect large or small portions but wasn't disappointed. The ham hock to start was delicious. The pork belly main was incredible and I had to take my chocolate mousse cake to go as I was so stuffed. The bottle of red went down a treat too. The staff were attentive but not overbearing, the food was delicious and the ambience perfect. Will definitely be going again soon.

I went for Sunday lunch with my husband. The restaurant itself is lovely, large and airy. Ambience was spot on, they had a singer performing acoustic versions of mellow classics and soulful chart music. I opted for the scotch egg for starters, roast chicken for the main and apple crumble for desert. The portion sizes were a little big for me, but better too big than too small. The main was excellent, perfect roasties and near enough half a chicken on my plate! Everything was spot on. The desert - best apple crumble i've had in my life (I really mean it)! the custard was perfect too, although I did have to send it back to the kitchen to be heated. Roast has an extensive wine list, glasses are expensive! Go for a carafe!

Positive: the restaurant served my partner's dessert with a birthday candle as requested. All of the food was cooked very well and tasted great. It wasn't very warm though especially the side dishes of vegetables. Negative: it took 20 minutes to order our food. There was a lack of personal service as we had 3-4 different waiters equally paying us little/no attention throughout. I pre-booked the set menu at £35 per head. I thought it was very cheeky that on the day I was then asked to pay an extra £3 per head for ordering roast beef! Drinks were expensive too. I chose the only 500ml beer on the menu which was their own IPA. It was good but at £6.85 it really ought to be!! My partner chose a glass of Kia Royale which cost £16.

Food and service were excellent for our party of 10 that included 4 young children. A mix up with a meal (which was our fault) was handled swiftly and with grace. Fantastic scallops followed by a great roast. A quality meal that was enjoyed and appreciated by all the family. This is not a cheap venue but the cost reflects the central London location and quality of experience. Highly recommended.

This was the second time we have been to Roast and overall, worth the visit. On this occasion however, the meat (beef) wasn't the best. I'm not generally a fussy eater but the beef I had was rather gristly and had sinew running through the middle that even the knife wouldn't go through. That aside the rest of the meal was excellent as was the service. Will definitely give them another chance.

I've been for breakfast on several occasions but this was the first time for Sunday lunch - It's a 3 course set menu (no other option) for £35. The food was fine but nothing spectacular, the beef for main was fatty and the belly of pork portion was enormous. There also seemed to be mint rolled in the middle which didn't really work for me. The yorkshire puddings are very good though. Pudding wise, the crumble still had skin on the fruit (apple) but was fine otherwise and a very good custard. What did let the overall experience down though was the service. Lack of continuity and they generally didn't seem interested/engaged at all and there were a few errors.

We got off to a bad start, our table (for 2) was crammed into a corner. No seats in lounge/bar area, Roast obviously want to take as much money as possible, it was crammed full of people eating, even at the bar. When we were shown to our table we were left for a long time before our order was taken, the side order of broccoli was inedible (£4.50), no-one came to ask us if everything was okay, our water glasses were not refilled. There was such a long wait again between being given the dessert menu and someone coming back to us we gave up and just asked for the bill. 12 1/2 % service on the bill is automatic, I was tempted to ask my husband to remove it! Overall very overpriced and very poor service for adequate but not great food.

I visited the Roast for breakfast with friends as a treat. The food was really good, but I was expecting better for the price. Service was reasonable, on two occasions I had to wait a little too long to catch the waiters attention for another coffee and extra butter. Also, I couldn't substitute an item on the full english, the waiter looked at me as if I was a little crazy for suggesting it. Including service charge, the bill for 3 people was £100. I didn't feel it was special enough to justify this price. For example, Chapters in Blackheath do a great breakfast for little more than half the price!

I was looking forward to my first visit to Roast. I'd heard good things. My husband has been many times. Unfortunately for me, the Eggs Benedict I ordered was probably the worst I've had! The muffin was extremely sad - very thin, dry and burnt - it was a bargain basement muffin, definitely not made on the premises (not at all like the delightful bread they served up beforehand. I actually swapped my muffin for some of the bread) Also the hollandaise sauce was much too vinegary, although the egg itself was very nice. I was not very impressed. Everything else around me looked good - the jams/marmalades excellent. I didn't have time to send it back and reorder (the service was a bit slow) because I had an appointment elsewhere. Disappointing.

The noise on a Thursday evening was deafening- no sound muffling materials, curtains carpets, etc. and then they added a singer and guitarist! At least the lift allowed access to part of the restaurant. the Daily special of Suckling Pig was finished by 9.15. and to find they used 3 pigs and threw away the roasted heads instead of making pate or rillettes de porc! The salmon, grouse and partridge was good , ( but at £30 a portion so it should be). Sadly it has dropped down our list of favourite restauants but the service was still excellent!

Excellent food, lovely location but so profit driven. Staff helped as far as they could with the 2 hour allowed time slot (which was mentioned in advance) but it reduced our enjoyment of the evening. We felt rushed to order, wine was constantly topped up so we would order more. This was the first time we had booked an early slot so we did not want to drink so much so quickly - and we had booked an early slot as last time one of the tables was so loud etc even the staff apologised repeatedly for the behaviour (note the acoustics - but great architecture!). But you do pour that alcohol quickly.... So a victim of your own success, Roast. Keep on coining it . You won't miss your quiet repeat customers for quite a while, after all.

We were asked to wait at the bar whilst our table was prepared, no one was serving so we just sat there without a drink, when we were seated there was some food on the floor under our table! Not sure it's worth the money and ask for a table in the main restaurant area, we were sat in the bar area which felt a bit 2nd rate.

The food was great and all of us did enjoy the lunch. No complaints whatsoever.

  • A little disappointed

Anticipated a great meal, and to be fair the food was very good. However, from the moment of arrival waiting staff made us feel rushed and "pushed through" the evening. The restaurant itself was lovely, but you could hardly hear people talking at your table due to the acoustics of the room and the singer they had (who was good), so the whole experience was noisy and not very relaxing. Food was very good, but as an experience I was left disappointed. Maybe avoid Saturday evening if you want a quieter dinner.
