Diner Reviews
  • "We came here for dinner and enjoyed the food - the quality of the ingredients and the cooking was very good, as most reviews will tell you. The live music is a nice touch and it's obviously great that the restaurant promotes british products. But it was incredibly expensive - Michelin star prices (actually more expensive than some Michelin star restaurants) - and despite being happy with our meal, we thought it was overpriced. May well pick up the cookbook though!"

  • "Food, as always, was amazing but why why why the terrible singers??? just awful"

  • "We had a celebration business meal on a Wednesday evening, the restaurant was quiet, but there were enough people to provide a good relaxed atmosphere, not surprising the service was excellent. The entire evening was great – live music in the bar set a relaxed and enjoyable tone. The shared porterhouse for two was our favourite – cooked perfectly. It was a bit expensive once we got into the wine list but I have to say good value for money. I’d recommend it for pretty much any occasion."

  • "We booked on line asking for a window seat as it was our anniversary. We were greeted by staff who couldn't do enough to help, all friendly and very professional. The food was amazing and reasonably priced for the quality. The entire restaurant looked spotless and we could not fault anything. We will recommend to family and friends and would definitely return again."

  • "We had a fantastic meal at Roast - the atmosphere was excellent and the service was spot on. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and were presented with a glass of free bubbly when we arrived at our table. We had the 3 course set menu - there was an excellent choice. The scotch eggs were excellent, the pork belly a lot less fatty than you would have expected and the dessert was very light. We found the staff really friendly exceptionally well trained and would definitely recommend it to other people. Our dessert had a great touch - with Happy Anniversary in chocolate sauce written around the plate!"

  • "Professional service, fantastic food, good atmosphere. Was impressed the first time, even better the second time, so look forward to the third time - hopefully soon."

  • "There's a distinct mismatch between what this restaurant aspires to be and what it delivers. The food was OK perhaps even good, but the service was surly and the atmosphere uninviting. Overall impression was of a high street chain but it's certainly not priced as such."

  • "This is the second time i've eaten here and it didn't disappoint. We went on Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was buzzing and had a great atmosphere. Service was superb and everything we ordered was excellent apart from the ribs which were a little dry. It's an expensive place but you get what you pay for. We will definitely be back and the friends we met there were equally impressed."

  • "We often come to Roast for an early Saturday breakfast and have always had a wonderful experience."
    dined on 23/08/2014
  • "It is a lovely restaurant with great live music and amazing service. However I just feel that food wise it wasn't quite worth the money, I have had much tastier meals in much cheaper rustic places in London. Wouldn't go back in a hurry."

  • "Excellent food and service! The steak was wonderful!"

  • "Having heard good things about Roast, we took some Australian visitors there for dinner. First impressions were favourable - it's a very nice room with big, handsome windows overlooking Borough Market. The food was OK but the prices were very high for this sort of thing (steaks, roast beef, scotch egg etc) which is now done very well at a hundred local gastropubs. Service was efficient but geared to selling more wine, water and side dishes (all very pricey). A case of the emperor's new clothes?"

  • "Roast never fails to impress. Its always a great atmosphere whether sitting at the bar for pre meal drinks or at your table anticipating beautiful food as the gentle aroma of roast this or that drifts by preparing you for a culinary delight that you will definitely want to return for! The service is great, the staff are very friendly but professional and are led by Joseph the restaurant manager who is a great source of information regarding the food sourcing and menu selection. The wine list is particularly good too - look out for 500 ml carafes and for the Roast own label Malbec! The Roast cookbook is brilliant value at £20 too, bringing together great ideas to liven up regular Sunday roasts and game along with suitable desserts as well."

  • "A pleasant enough breakfast experience, but almost entirely in the company of business breakfast meetings. Good value with OpenTable offer for the quieter August season, but would be on the expensive side otherwise."

  • "Go here for for an excellent meal and service, but don't be surprised at the cost. Everything was done very well when 4 of us visited on a wet Sunday evening in August. Looking down on the market at night, and watching the trains glide in to Cannon Street are two of the many reasons why this is a very special location. The food was excellent and the cocktails and wines were good, but very expensive."

  • "A wonderful experience in the heart of South London. The food and service were first class and the waiting staff polite and attentive, but not intrusive. The special lunch time menu was excellent value for money. I will definitely return!"

  • "I ate here with my partner for a late breakfast/ brunch on Saturday, we were sat by the window and the view accross borough market was wounderful, the service was good and the food definatly hit the spot! We both had 'full english' breakfasts and breakfast cocktails and they went down a treat, I would highly recomend Roast, but ask for a seat near the window when booking."

  • "Undoubtedly the worst dining experience. A birthday meal for my friend who loves roast meat. We ordered roast beef. For this main course alone we paid £35 each. When it came to our table it was beyond a joke. On a large plate we had horseradish, 4 halves of roast potatoes, a giant Yorkshire pudding and two tiny slices of roast beef. If I had held the pieces up to lthe light you could have seen through them. My partner had the same paltry amount too. The pieces measured 10 centimeteres by 6 or 7 centimetres. Ludicrous for £35! And to top it all this restaurant charges extra for vegetables! Complained and waiter said yes I guess it is a lot of money for what you get. Exploitation on a grand scale. We shall never return."

  • "Lovely setting and ambience. Nice for a great breakfast before heading off to a day at the cricket. My reason for choosing was that they can source halal meat. I was slightly disappointed that sausages were all that could source and I felt the halal full English breakfast had less than a regular full English. All in all very tasty though and good service"
    dined on 15/08/2014
  • "Nice lunch - good atmosphere and great British ingredients on the menu."
    dined on 14/08/2014
  • "we visited The Roast with 4 adults and 3 children. One of us is a vegetarian. Vegetable meals were not on the menu. But the waiter offered a good variety. All meals were delicious. The price is fair. The service is good. The flair of the restaurant is outstanding. We love the atmosphere of the market around. The only negativ point is, it is crowdy and loud."
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "I booked this restaurant for a business lunch. Although we took a few minutes to decide what to order once we had it took ages to come (both on main course and desert). I had the Pollock (flavourless) with pancetta (I've had better tasting pancetta from a supermarket) with a small piece of lettuce a few peas and a very runny sauce. my two guests went for fish chips and mushy peas. It would have been good if the waiter had advised there was so little accompaniment to my fish so I could have ordered a side. It was very bland, I wouldn't go back and believe I could cook this dish better at home."

  • "The Belly Pork is an absolute must have. The portion size is above average and the service and quality was of a very good attentive standard."

  • "Third experience of Roast at Borough Market and wasn't disappointed. Delighted with the choice and quality of food, tasting each other's and enjoying the ambience and attentive service. The scotch egg haggis starter was soooo tasty. Couldn't decide on the mains so all ordered something different. The roast pork and lamb came out on top but the roast beef was very close. Cheeseboard and apple and black currant crumble were exquisite. We must return for more another time. Oh..... Just remembered the cocktails......what a selection. Bloody Mary's, Cosmos and Martinis to die for.... We had to have seconds. Definitely a place for special occasions as rather pricey for Sunday lunch but would definitely recommend to family and friends."

  • "Would definitely recommend Roast, food was delicious, service was excellent had a table overlooking the market. Will definitely be returning."

  • "Really don't get the fuss. It's a noisy canteen with beautifully served average food. A little overhyped."
    dined on 10/08/2014
  • "Good atmosphere, lovely and light in summer, great food, good vegetarian menu (not presented as standard, we had to ask), good service (and flexible about mix and match between set menu and a la carte), nice views across to St Pauls from the window seats on the river side of the restaurant, lots of English wine on the menu as well as English produce."
    dined on 09/08/2014
  • "We booked a table and requested a window table, but did not get that (which wasn't the end of the world). We booked a 6:30pm table as you could then get 3 courses for £30. This really is excellent value, as the food is excellent. My only criticism was that 3 of us ordered Eton Mess for dessert and it was basically strawberries and cream as there was just 1 tiny piece of merraigne (which was a bit of a disappointment). This is the second time I have eaten at Roast and the food has been excellent both times."

  • "Borough Market was bustling & we were lucky enough to be seated by the window at Roast over looking it. The food was lovely, great wine choice and great atmosphere. However there are reasons why i'm only giving it three stars. The waiter who served us was so miserable at being there that it actually became funny. We then ordered, ahem, a couple of aperitifs but we also ordered a bottle wine. The (white) wine was poured while we were still drinking our aperitifs and then topped up even though we hadn't made a start on it! I appreciate that this is a very minor point. Finally, I knew because I'd researched it beforehand, that it was a tad pricey but I couldn't help feeling that it was overpriced when I left maybe because of the service"

  • "Great atmosphere on a lovely clear sunny day sitting by the window (a must to get the best out of the place). The staff were friendly and attentive. Very tasty food and huge bar menu. Will definitely be back."

  • "Have been at The Roast few years ago and was impressed back then. Having said that my last visit will be my last visit at the venue. Noisy atmosphere , quality of people attending sub-average (I.e. Oblivious to the fact they are loud and taking snaps of their food as if they have never eaten in their past life). Waiting stuff to busy to pay attention to the guests. Food was ok - but nothing special for the premium price paid. Good luck to them , but I am not going to venture there again. Been in corner pubs with better service and food and price"

  • "Meal was very nice with a good range on the menu and nice wines. Service was professional and attentive. The only thing that was not good was the level of the live jazz singer who was very good but just too loud. The restaurant was already full so had a good buzz about it but the singer was more at a performance volume rather than a background one. The amp was also distorting which made it uncomfortable to listen to at times."
