Best Restaurants in Barnsbury
I thought the food here was very
impressive. Refreshing Lyche appertif. Kebab starter (chicken, lamb, jumbo prawn, duck) were each distinctly spiced and delicious. This was followed by a perfectly cooked duck -- the best I've had in years -- in a spicy sauce. This is not just the same old Indian at inflated prices; this was special. The chefs here know flavour. Conveniently located, but away from the Upper Street crowds -- you can even eat outside, although I believe seating htere is limited. I will be recommending to friends and look forward to returning soon."

I attended Roots N1 as it is a
local restaurant and I've always walked past but never entered, I was very impressed. The building was a pub before and they've totally changed the look and feel to the place, food was very good and we was given plenty of complementary supplements during the course of the meal. great place for a quite birthday meal or evening out."

Never ceases to satisfy. Rohit and
his team provide delicious authentic Indian flavours, a relaxed pleasant ambience and a very warm welcome, always with a smile. Highly recommended."

Off the beaten track this is
certainly a superb Indian dining experience from three very talented chefs. Stand out was the slow cooked lentils service very good as well."

I think this restaurant has great
service and food. The extra touches of amuse bouches, and palette cleansers make it even more special. Lamb chops and butter chicken are favourite dishes. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Only negative is that the restaurant is in need of some TLC, particularly externally. Also the new menu format is unnecessarily complicated (pairing wines with dishes) and a little old fashioned being bound in a plastic wallet folder."
dined on 11/06/2014
We had a great meal here, food was
really good, particularly enjoyed the Lamp Chops for starter. The Wine pairings were very good and reasonably priced. Service was very attentive, the only downside was we went at 9pm on a Wednesday and the ambience was lacking. That said I imagine on a Friday night its got a great ambience."

Fantastic North Indian tandoori
cuisine with not too much oil/salt/spices etc.. A breath of fresh air! Excellent service and friendly staff. Only downside - expensive for even a top Indian restaurant, especially as it is not in a prime London location."

The service at Roots is extremely
good and the food is excellent."

Outstanding! Great service, great
food, wonderful place. "

amazing alternative indian cusine
- only matched by the excellent service in which accompanies it. we'll be back"
dined on 17/05/2014
Not a long menue, but extremely
well prepared and tasty. Fast service and a friedly, professional athmosphere. Indian inspired, but not trafitional. "

As wonderful as always. Great
service, food and ambience."

Food far and beyond what you would
expect in a 'high street' Indian restaurant. I have been lucky enough to eat in a 2 Michelin starred Mayfair Indian and this compared very well on a purely culinary scale. Very interesting wine selection too with a very palatable Indian Sauvignon Blanc. This restaurant would not be out of place in a far more central location. The only down-side is that for the second time Opentable (Toptable as was) restricted reservation times to 1845 (earliest) and 2115 (latest) when the restaurant could accommodate direct bookings at othe times"

Quite simply one of the finest
meals I have ever eaten. Incredible flavors, wonderful service, and perfect ambiance. "

Everything was just perfect !! The
food , the atmosphere ! I felt as if I was a VIP ! It's not just an excellent restaurant ... It's a wonderful experience ! The staff and the owner of the place make you feel special .. As if they were just waiting for you to come ! "

My boyfriend and I had been
planning to eat at Roots for nearly a year before we managed to go and we were not disappointed. We started with a house Apple and Clove cocktail which was delicious and the food which followed was the same. The only let down was the Roots Carrot Pudding was not available so we had to choose alternative desserts. The staff were very attentive, friendly and happy to advise on wine choices. Although not what would be classed as "cheap" it was great value. We are now planning to take all the family asap."

My girlfriend and I went as a
present from my parents in recommendation from my sister who raved about Roots at N1, it is fair to say we were not disappointed. The service was impeccable, the food was excellently prepared and well explained by the waiting staff. Overall a delicious and fun evening. P.s this is my first ever review, so the place must be good to make me write one ha!"

I go to India a lot and love the
food. Indian restaurants in the UK have got better so there is a lot of competition out there. The food here is fantastic, one of the best in London"
dined on 08/04/2014
We were at Roots after hearing
lots of praise from friends. We had also several mind blowing meals at Benares before, so reading about the fact that one of the chefs is Ex Benares probably heightened our expectations as well. We found the food overall very pleasant, with 1 dish being absolutely outstanding (carrot pudding), but I don't understand the fuss about it. The dishes were very steeply priced e.g. £18 for a vegetarian aubergine dish (really?), none of the meals came with veg, rice or anything (e.g. rice adds an extra, I think it was, £6.50). So you end up spending £20-30 for a main. However liked the ambience + the waiter was brilliant. Won't go back as we had more amazing food at this price level at other locations."

We really enjoyed our latest visit
to Roots at N1. The service was exceptional and the food very enjoyable. The staff is attentive, food quality and diversity is great, and cocktails and wine list competent and well matched. We will definitely return and encourage others to visit for a nice dining experience."
dined on 15/03/2014
Love this place. Food is
outstanding and the service is very attentive but not intrusive. We keep coming back."
dined on 26/11/2013
Not a curry house. Monkfish, sea
bass, slow roasted lamb shanks all with Indian influences. A small place, top class helpful service and just wonderful food. The best Indian food I have ever tasted."
dined on 16/02/2014
We visited Roots and wished we had
done it years ago, as the restaurant is on our doorstep. We were warmly welcomed and seated in the busy, but ambient restaurant. The atmosphere was perfect, with nice lighting and a really relaxed feel to the place. My lamb chop starter was divine. The meat was the tenderest I have ever had and the flavours excited every taste bud. I enjoyed butter chicken for my main, again the meat was cooked to perfection and the tastes were amazing. Roots also offer amuse bouche and a palate cleanser, which just added to the experience. We opted not to have desert, as our food was more than enough! I love the menu - there is a wine selected for each dish. The waiting staff were professional and attentive - thanks!"

Took my wife here for her birthday
and was very glad I did! It has glowing reviews and so it should. The fusion of British classics like Lamb Shank and Indian spices was sublime. Our particular favourite was the Blueberry Parfait and Strawberry Ice Cream - superb! Highly recommended"
dined on 15/02/2014
Whilst the location of this
restaurant is a little out of the way, the food and service is worth the trek. It must be a plus for the locals to have such a restaurant on their doorstep. We sat down to the house cocktail, an interesting fruity curry concoction that awakened the taste buds. The soft shelled crab was very tasty, if not slightly greasy. Main of butter chicken was supreme - very moist and flavoursome. Unfortunately the lamb shank was a bit tough and had little taste, apart from the Rogan Josh sauce. Wine was good, as was the choice of dessert wine provided. The service throughout the meal was excellent, and you could tell the waiter enjoyed his job - a rare plus. Would return."

5 star dining unlike any other
food we have tasted in an Indian restaurant in this country. Do not come here expecting poppadoms & pickle trays, it is food on another level. Limited menu with wine pairings for each dish. Combination and balance of flavours is superb. Presentation is excellent and service very efficient. Open kitchen so you can see the food being prepared. Cocktail and amuse bouche provided on arrival were delicious."

Great little restaurant tucked
away on a back street in Islington. Don't judge the standard by the location as the team behind Roots have an impressive track record and have worked in some of London's best restaurants. You can tell this immediately as the service is excellent and there are subtle touches of Michelin standard everywhere. The menu is well put together and they even recommend a wine for each dish. We couldn't resist trying this and were not disappointed. The whole team are bringing a new level of standards to the neighbourhood restaurant and we wish them every success. If you live in N1 or surrounds you have to try it. If you don't live local it is well worth making the effort for. See you again soon."

Food was very good. Service was
attentive. The wine list looked pretty well thought out."

Having arrived with no knowledge
except it was that Roots does curry, I was really surprised by the level of service, standard of food presentation and quality of the unusual menu. Atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Service attentive but not overbearing. The dishes were unusual but well presented and full of flavour (cottage cheese starter I highly recommend) and the small in between dishes served up from the kitchen were interesting and delicious. The bonus surprise was the final bill which worked out to be very reasonable considering we had enjoyed some amazing lamb and huge green prawns! Far from being your ordinary 'curry house' this place deserves a visit."
dined on 17/01/2014
I visited after my son's high
praise and recommendation. Location is really a very negative incentive. It is in a residential street, far from any regular "eating areas". So the trek increased expectation. Tripadvisor rating as 26th in London area, seemed to clinch the reputation. There was no ambience, as it was early evening on a Tuesday. Service was good and attentive. The prawns I ordered, were heavily over seasoned. Managed to eat them, with difficulty. On complaining, there was an apology, but no replacement offered ! The basmati rice was dry, indicating that it was pre prepared and allowed to dry out. It should have light, moist and fresh. Curry house with pretension, rather than a gourmet experience. Location terrible."

Very cosy lovely restaurant Hidden
away in residential area Good sized portions and very filling with lots of good flavour"

Excellent as always! Great
service, amazing food and cheaper than most gastro pubs but with much better food!"
dined on 11/12/2013
My favourite indian in central
London. I really like a decent curry, but I like an outstanding curry even more. Roots is a modern take on Indian cuisine, well-balanced, light, fragrant and simply delicious."

Our family (Americans) recently
spent about 9 days in the U.K. The meal at Roots at N1 was far and away the best meal we had. Usually when you go to a restaurant, there are some good things and bad things. At Roots, EVERYTHING was good: bread, appetizers, wine, entrees, desserts. The service was fantastic. Everyone was very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We were a party of four adults and four children and they were fantastic with the kids. The place isn't the easiest to get to but it is well worth the trip out to Islington. I highly recommend it."

This place is such a gem. Really
amazing food (get the cauliflower entrée - I never knew vegetables could taste that good!), really helpful and friendly waiters and simple, elegant surroundings. I love this place and will absolutely be going back."
dined on 05/12/2013
We had high expectations. Thinking
about it as a indian cousine in a french framework. Staff was very friendly. Also good ambience. Starter: some kind of soup. really good. spicy and hot. Softshell crab: too greasy not crispy. Butter Chicken: good Monk fish: a tragedy ! A good monkfish has the texture of a lobster (juicy). not sure it really was a monkfish.. cauliflower dish: takes more than frying + some sweet & sour sauce dessert: very good (both cake and blueberry parfait) Price: Sorry to say but chef needs to improve kitchen skills before price can be justified."
dined on 29/11/2013
We are regulars at Roots and come
away each time raving. This time was no exception. Everything was absolutely delicious and the service meticulous as always."
dined on 28/11/2013
A great find. Roots is tucked away
on a quiet street, however, it feels intentional. Were it located in a busier area it would have queues around the block, detracting from the overall experience. As it is it feels intimate, with space for circa 40 covers (I guess) and low, romantic lighting. The staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food itself was simply divine from the starters through to desert, I could not find fault with anything. My wife and I sampled each others food (as it was all too tempting). They went the extra mile and surprised my wife with a desert for her Birthday. Price wise it was very reasonable - I have certainly paid much more for not as good (e.g. Benares). Cannot recommend highly enough!"
dined on 27/11/2013
We were a group of six for a
friend's birthday. Menu is interesting and food was on the whole absolutely delicious. Staff were attentive but let down by the fact that the food took ages to come. An hour after arriving we had not yet received our starters.. this was a real shame as otherwise would have been superb."
dined on 21/11/2013
This place is a gem. If it weren't
on an obscure side street it would be lined up. The food is Indian with a gourmet riff. So tasty. The space is warm and cosy. The owners and staff make you feel special every time. If this place weren't on an obscure side street it would be lined up. But the location just adds to its charm. One of the best-kept dining secrets in London."
