A word from Salaam Namaste
Salaam Namaste restaurant in London’s Bloomsbury is an Indian/Subcontinental restaurant for people who really love food. The décor is charming though modest and unassuming -- we’ve all been dazzled then let down by slick design in the past. At Salaam Namaste, disappointment is not on the menu. The chef, formerly at a chichi Indian hotel, is a maestro at cuisines that criss-cross that part of the world, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, with an emphasis on seafood. Signature dishes include starters of kathi kabab, jingha peri peri, and aloo chat, and main courses of tawa lamb chops, Goan green chicken curry and Bangladeshi machchi fry. Classic dishes are here, all served with a calm, friendly air. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Salaam Namaste produces some of the best, freshest, tastiest and carefully prepared Indian food in London. It offers contemporary Indian cuisine without all the pretentious, ridiculous and unnecessary flourishes that so often just detract from the food. Dined there on my recommendation with a couple of friends, and they had a great time. We had a starter of the Peri Peri Prawns: MASSIVE prawns in a fiery but delicious sauce: up to the usual standard. BUT BUT BUT my main dish of Lamb Rogan Josh was almost inedible as the lamb was incredibly tough. It was such a shame, as everything else was its usual first rate self. Even so, this really is one of my favourite Indian restaurants in London, and I've been to a few I can tell you."

  • "Was excited to try this restaurant as I'd read good reviews. Wasn't disappointed with the food but the service was poor. Only one waiter at lunchtime and he was fairly rude, virtually threw our bill at us at the end of the meal!"

  • "Met a Norwegian friend here for lunch. The food was excellent and tasty, well presented and with efficient, friendly service. Would recommend and will be back."

  • "I dont often feel the need to leave comments about a restaurant but in this case! The service was excellent, the food outstanding. Ordered a mixture of aromatic and hot dishes. All the dishes and side dishes were flavoured to perfection, the Goa Green Curry manged to pack a punch yet still let all the other flavours through. The lamb Shank was well spiced and just melted of the bone."

  • "My husband and I walk past Salaam Namaste regularly and had never been in. It's hidden down a quiet little side street in Bloomsbury. On a recommendation we booked dinner before a movie this weekend. The food was great, very tasty and seemed authentic. Also good value for money. No more than any other Indian restaurant but they have different dishes on their menu along with the favourite curries. Definitely recommend."

  • "SalaamNamaste is amazing place to eat. I feel like home when come in. The food so delicious and tasty. I really found the staff members very friendly who always treating you like a VIP. Good location with good transport links. Thank you and will see you soon."

  • "Had a good meal here withe work colleagues, with only complaint being that service was quite abrupt."

  • "It is small cafeteria ok kind of restaurent. Food was ok but didn't felt like award winning restaurant . Price was high . I felt I have been overcharged . Very limited menu . I won't visit again"

  • "A very nice Indian restuarant (Halal). There were four of us using the Top Table set menu of 3 courses for £15.95. The choices were limited but suited everyone in our party, the foot was hot, tasty and filling. The restaurant is quite small but it is nice and calm. A table of about 10 came in and were accommodated easily. Would definitely go back."

  • "Good food but the behaviour of the staff was startling. Smile seems to be an unknown word to them. One waiter actually turned our back to us while we were giving the order and he walked away! Shame, because the food is good. I don't know if I'd go again"

  • "Another great meal at Salaam Namaste. Tasty starters and generously portioned mains."
    dined on 06/02/2014
  • "The food is okay, not much difference in taste between dishes though. The decor is very plain and bland, no pictures on the wall, kind of feels like a canteen. I probably won't rush back here."

  • "We ate on a Saturday night, when the restaurant was busy but not too frantic. The food was delicious, and beautifully presented as well. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars for value was that we used the 30% off food deal, and it wasn't clear before that this only applied if you ordered a starter and a main - we had only intended to eat a main. But on the food alone, I would definitely recommend it."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "The food here is more than just one step up from that in the average neighbourhood Indian restaurant (as are the prices). The place was packed on the Saturday we ate here and they were struggling slightly to cope, but the front of house staff remained attentive and friendly throughout."

  • "We were a group of 10 diners. The food was excellent and excellent value. Would recommend!"

  • "This is a very different type of Indian restaurant, with some unusual dishes and ingredients. Well worth a visit."

  • "We went to the restaurant for Christmas. There was a set menu - we were very impressed with the range of options on the menu as well as the quality. The service was attentive throughout the meal but not overbearing. We really enjoyed our visit and would absolutely recommend Salaam Namaste to others."

  • "Excellent food and service. Would definitely go back. Everyone in the group enjoyed the meal."

  • "It can be hard to find the perfect Indian restaurant in London - one that serves great food (that you won't regret a couple of hours later) and yet isn't too expensive. I've been going to Salaam Namaste for years, and when I have friends visiting from out of town, always take them here for the London curry experience."
    dined on 15/12/2013
  • "This was my second dinner at Salaam Namaste. We went for a group meal having one of the Christmas menus, and the food was excellent, as in my first visit, the service as attentive, and the dimmed lights ambiance (Christmas tree and all) great as well. Been recommending to my friends Salaam Namaste as the best Indian restaurant I've been to in London, and hope not to have reasons to change this!"
    dined on 10/12/2013
  • "I booked a table for 10 following a workshop at Senate House after reading good reviews. Salaam Namaste set aside a nice table, and didn't seem too peeved when the group proved to be only 8. The food was excellent, and well priced -- our party's bill came out to 30 pounds apiece, with everyone enjoying a main course and quite a lot of beer and wine. My only quibble was with the noise level in this small restaurant, which made dinner table conversation a bit difficult. Still, I would, and likely will, book again."

  • "Unsuitable for a group meal. It is very noisy when the restaurant is almost full - terrible acoustics. You have to learn towards the diners facing you just to hear them. During winter, there should not be a table only 50cm from the door onto the street. That door doesn't fully close unless physically pushed shut. Freezing winter air blew into the area with every person coming and going; the diner nearby had to physically close the door on twenty occasions. We were seated for over half an hour before the food order was taken. Food was delivered with large time gaps - most diners without any food for five mins while others had a plate. A diner asked for no ice; drink arrived with ice. A diner asked for one tap water; nothing arrived."

  • "Becoming a regular for us - the food has never disappointed and is a combination of the traditional mixed with new twists. Very friendly and comfortable atmosphere and easily one of the best asian dining experiences in London!"

  • "A change of management with an exciting new menu including some tasty new additions."

  • "I visited this restaurant for about the 6th time. I had the Top Table deal which I thought may be at risk from corner cutting. It wasn't. The spicy lamb dish was truly amazing and they kindly gave me the option of having Black Dhal over the standard yellow. Just those two dishes alone are worth coming back for again and again. My friend was mighty impressed to. This restaurant remains one of the very best I have tried for good Indian cuisine that makes so many restaurant come across as very average. Best Regards. Mostlyreasonable"

  • "Went here on a team night out. Would definitely recommend. Try the soft shell crab - amazing. Close to Lambs Conduit Streeet which is great for pubs to meet up in beforehand. And they do 15% off the food bill for 6+ diners."
    dined on 28/11/2013
  • "Have enjoyed the restaurant in the past but have had bad fish (ie inedible) twice in the last few months. The first time, the manager was terribly apologetic and offered us a replacement, whereas this time the waiter didn't really apologise with any sincerity. Unlikely to go back now."
    dined on 14/11/2013
  • "What a gem, a little bit off the beaten track hardly two minutes from Russell Square more like ten but saying that it was well worth the effort. The food was excellent, there were five in our party and we all had different dishes which were cooked to a very high standard. Would strongly recommend this restaurant and will definitely return."
    dined on 06/11/2013
  • "Food was excellent. There was a good variety of unusual dishes plus all your more standard dishes. Restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday night - about 3-4 tables were booked in total. I think this is due to location though as it is in quite a residential & office area that isn't busy at the weekends. Would definitely recommend and I would go back, but probably only Mon - Fri."

  • "I booked Salaam Namaste after looking for an Indian restaurant that was slightly outside of the usual tourist trap areas while still being in the Holborn area. The service was excellent as was the menu - so many items that were not what you would usually see - from goan scallops, to softshell crab or mustard quail - and that was just the starters! Two of us had the Dhaba Gosht (Goat) which came in a lovely earthen pot and was cooked to perfection. The others had the Seafood Moilee which was seafood medley, and the vegetarian had the Paneer Jalfrezi. We also ordered a date & ginger naan (again, quite original) as well. The wine was reasonably priced which was an added bonus. Would definitely recommend."

  • "We have eaten here several times before and always had an exceptional meal but this time it was spoilt by excessive noise! It was unbearable and really ruined what would have been a very good supper. There is no soft furnishing to absorb noisy diners and as one group began to shot, another group merely tried to outshout them. You could only hear your immediate neighbour and that with difficulty."

  • "Salaam Namaste is a relatively small Indian restaurant with lots of tiny tables squeezes in. This means that privacy is limited and the restaurant is noisy and we struggled to have a conversation. The menu, however, was interesting and had an excellent selection of traditional indian dishes and some unique ones. The food was tasty and accompanying wine list was suitable for most palates. The service was adequate and generally helpful but we felt rushed as plates were cleared almost before the forks had been put down. We were also offered no desserts and the bill arrived without the 30% discount. This was soon sorted out. With the discount the restaurant is good value but we would prefer to go again ,perhaps ,at lunch time."

  • "The staff gave us a very friendly and warm welcome and we were asked for pappadum and drinks as soon as we were ready after being seated on a nice cozy corner. Within no time the waiter presented the pappadum's and drinks on the table already with a big smile on his face such a lovely guy. Secondly, when we were ready for the food orders whilst the restaurant was getting busy the waiter suggested us some nice food options without getting distracted. That was really amazing the food was well presented on the plates and the butter chicken was out of this world. The sea bass was also one of the best looking dish.Really happy and satisfied and definitely coming again. Thank you salaam namaste for such a wonderful evening :D"

  • "Salaam Namaste delivers excellent, well cooked, interesting indian dishes. I chose the venison for starters which was beautifully presented, and came with beetroot which seemed to have been cooked with horseradish - utterly delicious. My main was the lamb shank with curry leaf potatoes. My companion had the Laal Maas and naan, a reliably yummy well spiced stew if you are reasonably chilli tolerant. 2 gripes from this visit - one of our dishes arrived warm not hot - we weren't the only table sending things back to be reheated. This when the place was barely half full. And the 2nd one is that the tandoori pineapple from the dessert menu was clearly a canned pineapple ring which had been nowhere near a grill! Skip desserts!"

  • "We only happens to stumble across this as an online joint experience day entitled is to a 3 course meal in a restaurant from a huge list. Shortlisted to just a few, we eventually booked this because of location and reputation of the food on their website and bbc media. Would recommend, love the street food style and taste with an extra eye for detail to plating and flavour. Very helpful and cheerful staff. Enjoyed with a beer for him and a lovely red wine for me! Desert wasn't amazing, and was only ice cream, so perhaps skip that! Short walk from British museum but off the beaten track which is nice to get in London."

  • "THIS IS THE WORST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD. i WOULD NEVER EVER OR EVEN RECOMMEND SOMEONE. I WAS LATE FOR MY BOOKING BUT THEY WAITER WAS VERY VERY RUDE AND TREATED ME AS IF I WENT TO WORK THERE. AND I WAS TREATED AS A SECOND CLASS WHEN HE KNEW I CAME FROM TOPTABLE. I THINK IF THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN BOOKINGS FROM TOP TABLE. WE SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT OF TOP TABLE. THE WAITER WAS SMELLING REALLY BAD AND THEY WERE TRYING TO GIVE US A REALLY BAD TABLE. AS MY WIFE WAS PREGNANT WE FELT A BIT DOWN AND DISAPPOINTED AND IGNORED. SO WE DECIDED TO WALK OUT. AND I INFORMED THE WAITER AND HE CAME ACROSS RUDE AGAIN SO WE LEFT WITHOUT HAVING FOOD."

  • "I have been a regular customer at this place and on Saturday night i brought my girlfriend along and the restaurant was fully packed but they still managed to arrange a nice and quiet table for us in the corner. As usual the service was very attentive and the food was remarkable and it is always hard to decide if which dish is the best. The waiters were well presented and service was spot on."

  • "Saturday night, 10 diners from various parts of the globe getting together as part of a collector/hobbyist weekend. I chose the restaurant primarily because of good reviews online and proximity to the hotel where we were staying. Everybody was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and service. The range of regional Indian dishes was excellent and the service was attentive and swift. Will definitely come again."

  • "I could not advice going to this restaurant. Having arrived for our reservation (on time) they suggested we sat outside in the cold as they had given away our table. Having declined this suggestion they produced a table infront of the door to the WC which was an inconvenience to all. Only once we had decided what we would like they decided they had given us the wrong menu as we were on the toptable deal. They then proceeded to produce a filthy scrap of paper with the items on the deal. Not what was advertised by toptable. After an hour our food arrived. They then proceeded to get extremely shirty when I reduced the service charge they had added to the bill. A restaurant best avoided."
