A word from Sardo
Word has spread like lightning about this Italian restaurant in London’s Fitzrovia just a few steps from Fitzroy Square. Sardo is one of the few restaurants in London that focuses on the cuisine of Sardinia, so you can expect consummately prepared authentic Sardinian specialties prepared by a Sardinian chef. It’s all served by smiling staff in a relaxed, welcoming setting, and at prices that will remind you of your childhood holidays -- well very nearly. Start with Sardo’s thin-sliced sun-dried fillet of tuna on a bed of fresh French beans and sun-dried tomatoes, followed by hard-wheat pasta in a tomato and aromatic sausage sauce. Main courses include grilled swordfish with rucola and tomato, and sweets feature the sebadas, a puff pastry filled with pecorino cheese and topped with honey. The international wine list is strong on characterful Sardinian wines, the perfect accompaniment to a fabulous meal at Sardo restaurant.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We were a group of 8 and all of us loved the food - that tells you how good it was as it's rare to have everyone like it. The non-pasta options are different from what you find in typical Italian places and were excellent! I tried the lamb and was def among the best i ever had! Service was good too - they even held our table for an extra 30mins as we got stuck while watching a football game. They even gave us a free round of shots at the end to cap off an amazing dinner!"

  • "Booking wa s quite straightforward and sudden additional person was accepted without any stress. Foods were fresh and well dished up. All 8 of our party fully satisfied. Quite impressive."

  • "My wife and I had an early dinner at Sardo. She had the swordfish and I had the calf's liver. Both were excellent. The desserts were great too. A bit cheeky that the bread and olives which were not asked for were added to the bill though. Other than that, value for money was very good. Would certainly make a return visit."

  • "I came across Sardo when arranging a lunch with an old friend. What a find. Tucked away near Great Portland Place this is a gem. Wednesday lunch and the place was buzzing. If you are looking for a quiet intimate lunch, forget it, the sound of 20 simultaneous conversations echoing through the room will not be what you are looking for but if you want delicious Sardinian food, great atmosphere and fun this is the place for you. Very reasonably priced and the staff couldn't be better."

  • "Very good food at very good prices (by London standards), served with care and attention."

  • "My first visit to Sardo - a friendly, simple yet elegant style and the best food I've had in months.....we arrived early and it was perfect until the area at the back of the restaurant filled up....then it was difficult to hear conversation even across our table. As a musician I have good hearing AND I also have acoustic boards on my studio walls - Sardo could improve the ambience immensely with just a few of these specially designed boards which would look like contemporary art on the rather bare walls - so FOOD for THOUGHT?!"

  • "This well-established restaurant focusing on the food & wine of Sardinia has clearly mastered the art of welcoming diners and providing friendly and efficient service in a relaxed atmosphere. It made for a very satisfying dining experience."

  • "We had a lovely early evening meal. The food was beautifully prepared and presented with the Carl's liver a particular success. Despite being very busy the waiting staff were very pleasant and unhurried and there was a terrific buzz of conversation in the room. Thoroughly recommended."

  • "It's a good restaurant close to Warren Street station. Service is good and food is nice although not exceptionnal. But then I had pasta as a main I should maybe have gone for something more refined. I think it was good but overall overpriced"

  • "I visited Sardo with my husband when we were staying in London for a few days. The staff were very attentive without being pushy and the food was lovely. My husband chose a soup from the specials menu and I chose my main meal from there which was lamb and it was cooked to perfection. The restaurant was very busy but we didn't have to wait long for the food to arrive. There was a mix up with desserts but this was soon rectified. All in all a very enjoyable evening and we will come again when we are in London."

  • "Sardo worked well as the location for a work get-together. Easy to access by public transport. Great food. Very good house wine. Not cheap but excellent value for the quality."

  • "I booked my birthday meal there and, while the is small, they managed to fit our group of 10. They were also accommodating as we had a last minute addition. Whilst we were well looked after, a large group does make a lot of noise so might have annoyed other diners. The food was great, Sardinian specialities and our table polished off every course. I would definitely recommend this. The only criticism is they didn't have espresso martinis on the menu!"

  • "Had a lovely meal at Sardo last Monday 3rd Feb to celebrate four years with my fiance. I'd booked it on recommendation from TripAdvisor. I made my decision based on comments that the food was excellent value and that the staff were friendly - I'd agree with both of those statements. I also thought the food was of excellent quality. We had mozarella and calamari shared between us for a starter, both of which were very tasty. I then had the Sardinian sausage for my main which was delicious - full of lovely fennel seeds. My fiance had the tuna which was perfectly cooked. We were too full for dessert but the meal was rounded off perfectly by a free Sardinian digestif - really unusual flavour, but delicious. Would definitely come back."

  • "The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded; the service good without being over the top; the food was excellent; the house wine reasonable but it was not cheap - £50 per head, for a two course meal. The overall lay out meant the acoustics were not great - we found ourselves occasionally straining over the table while talking - but it was a pleasant lay out; for fish eaters, not on a budget, it's an excellent choice; I will definitely go there again!"

  • "My wonderful girlfriend booked at Sardo's and being of Sardinian descent herself this was a perfect opportunity for me to try some of her hometown cuisine. As a starter we had calamari ripieni (they were lovely) and we chose as a first dish Malloreddus alla Campidanese (absolutely amazing! malloreddus is a special pasta typical from Sardinia, dressed with Sardinian sausage and tomato sauce topped with grated parmesan) and finally we have a beef steak really soft and well cooked. Portions are quite big (we shared them all) and we didnt have desert cos we were too full but they looked amazing. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to impress a loved one or just for a meal with friends. High class food, quality and service."

  • "I have been to Sardo with 4 friends and altough the service was very good, food was just OK. We all took a starter and a main, accompained by a bottle of Sardinian wine and final amaro - £50 each bill. This is the classic Italian restaurant in London that charges a lot for just decent food - I am happy to pay that amount but for something better. Furthermore I come from Sardinia, and I can guarantee that the food we took was far from being real Sardinian taste. I would not recommend it to anyone."

  • "I have been to Sardo on a number of occasions but previously this had always been for business. However, I had been sufficiently impressed to return for a special occasion private dinner and I am glad I did. Staff super attentive (very accommodating on table selection, recommendations, etc.) and food absolutely fantastic quality. Ambiance perfect - not too loud, not too quiet - actually like being in a local Sardinian restaurant. Highly recommended for either business or pleasure. Just try to book early if you want to secure a more private table for 2."

  • "My first (and last) visit to Sardo. The ambience of the room is poor - inelegant tables, more like a cafe than a restaurant (at least in the front room where I was sitting). The food was hit and miss. I'm always put off when I see the same ugly multicoloured salad garnishes on each starter, which suggests that the kitchen is just slapping on whatever comes to hand rather than crafting individual dishes. That said, much of the food was decent, if unexciting. Nice wine list. What turned this into an exceptionally poor experience was the number of small flies buzzing around the tables - dozens. Impossible to ignore, not nice, and sugegsts a lack of adequate cleaning if they're able to thrive so successfully."

  • "Overall, sadly disappointing. Went for early ny's eve date after reading reviews but disappointed by quality & poor value for money. Stale crackers/bread on table the first bad sign- had to ask to refresh. My guest had nice sized tho not very fresh salad & I had the mozzarella, tasty but small portion on large plate for £9.50 = overpriced. My guest's main meat dish fine but my scallop tagliatelle was NOT nice - scallops were obviously not fresh but frozen, chewy with a bland & COLD sauce. Beware that cover for olives/bread is £2 each, service & 'charity donation' added automatically bringing total to £90 for not particularly satisfying two course meal + cheapest bottle wine and coffee, no dessert or sides. Shocking really- we won't be back."

  • "Always good to find a good restaurant close to work. This was our first visit to Sardo and we were impressed - great memories of a recent holiday in Sardinia. I chose the aromatic sausage and my wife the swordfish which were great. The cheeseboard was enough for two with five different cheeses and strengths! Varied breads accompanying the olives were a nice touch. Restaurant was quiet to begin with (early evening) but was busy when we left. Friendly service - will return to the location five minutes from Warren Street station."

  • "My parents, wife and I enjoyed our lunch, especially the lamb and the varied Sardinian cheeseboard. The rear of the restaurant can get quite noisy with lunchtime diners chatting away but the atmosphere is good. Service very friendly."

  • "Christmas lunch with four others. Steaks, lamb and swordfish all were perfectly cooked and the accompanying Sardinian wine was just right. Everyone was impressed."

  • "Restaurant was very busy with festive diners but we were seated immediately. My companion loved the calves liver and my steak was very good. Tempted by the cheeseboard but opted instead for the lovely almond and chocolate cake with ice cream. No pressure to leave even though we had a late 1415 booking. Fourth visit in around a month and consistently good quality and service."

  • "We had a wonderful evening at Sardo. Wonderful food, excellent wine, friendly staff... Everything exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Sardo provides recognisable traditional Italian dishes well done, but also some interesting Sardinian recipes which are a little more unusual and adventurous. Pleasant service"

  • "We eat at Sardo regularly. Food, wine, service and value are outstanding"
    dined on 18/12/2013
  • "great food. really flavourful and high quality. desert was a slight let down as the chocolate almond cake was dryer than i anticipated and came with a sauce which was not described on the menu. my friends pistacio ice cream was lovely."
    dined on 16/12/2013
  • "... we've had to wait for more than 35 minutes between starter and our pasta. In fact, we were about to leave when it finally came. It was the third time I was eating at Sardo, yet, next time we'll do leave if there is a next time."
    dined on 17/12/2013
  • "I have been here before, and I really don't understand why I have taken so long to go back. The food and ambiance are great. Return diners are treated well: for example we had a complimentary bread basket and a post-prandial limincello when I booked through toptable and more recently on a return visit I didn't. Great service, with friendly staff from Italy and Romania."

  • "We went to Sardo for a birthday lunch. Husband had scan appointments in morning and afternoon at UCLH, so we were a bit time restricted. The staff were very helpful and our food was served quickly, we even had time for a coffee! The food was lovely. Very well prepared, the pasta was al dente, which I love, and even the vegetables in the pasta sauce were cooked to perfection, still had a crunch in it. We had the mozzarella for starters and it melted in your mouth, very good. Only found, as it was very busy, it was quite noisy and not much privacy, but the quality of the food more than made up for that."
    dined on 11/12/2013
  • "I love this very welcoming, convivial restaurant. I was there with a fairly large group on Tuesday and the service was a little slow, but the food was as excellent as always. Starters are very large so well worth sharing!"

  • "I am addicted to their Spaghetti Bottariga. Whenever I am in London I must have it! Also the other dishes are delicious, and excellent wines and olive oil..."

  • "I have visited Sardo many times over the past five years and I have to say that the welcome, quality of food and service is never a let-down. The front of house staff are very friendly and respond appropriately to diners needs in a calm and meticulous way. This is matched by the quality of the food on offer and, having eaten there twice this week due to unusual business circumstances, I now know that the Specials Menu changes some of what is on offer each day! Definite recommendation without hesitation for a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience."

  • "Great restaurant for a foodie. Love the traditional Sardinian food and wine that's offered and adore the fabulous bread basket! Food is simple but every dish is beautifully cooked and presented."

  • "I celebrated my birthday there this past week and had a very enjoyable experience. The ambience was simple and chic, food was very good and the service was very attentive. The owner came to my table after I had paid the bill, said Happy Birth Day and bought me a drink. Very Classy. I would recommend to anyone."
