A word from Simpson's In The Strand
Simpson's is one of the few London restaurants offering only the finest quality British ingredients cooked to perfection in classic British style. The restaurant's speciality is Scottish beef on the bone that has been aged for 28 days for maximum flavour. The beef is carved at guests' tables from antique silver-domed trolleys, which is a practice that began over 150 years ago and for which Simpson's is world-renowned. Other Simpson’s signature dishes include classics such as potted shrimps, roast saddle of lamb and steak and kidney pie.

Guests can also enjoy classic cocktails in Knight’s Bar, an art deco cocktail lounge located on the first floor. It is the perfect place to enjoy either a pre-dinner cocktail or after-dinner aperitif.

My sister and I met for lunch at Simpsons, and just had the wonderful roast beef, very under-done as we had asked. We particularly liked the very nice Portuguese Indian, Mr Gonzalez, who told us a bit about the history of the restaurant and was so very kind and helpful.

Having looked forward to eating at Simpsons, my friends and I were extremely disappointed. While the food was excellent, we had to wait an hour for our meals before being told that one of the dishes was going to take some time to cook. Had we been informed of this my friend would have ordered something else. When we got the bill, there was a disagreement regarding a bottle of wine which was wrongly priced by the waitress. Although it was resolved, we were somewhat disappointed with the attitude of the staff. The food itself was excellent, although one of my friends had to return hers because it was cold. It was a shame the afternoon went as it did because I made the reservation going by the reputation of the restaurant.

This was my first visit here despite living in London all my life. The restaurant itself is beautiful in the wood panelled style and adds a sense of luxury and tradition before you even start to eat. The food was great, four in my party and all courses were cooked to a terrific standard and did not disappoint. I had the roast beef from the trolley - it may not be cheap but certainly for a 'one off' it was delicious and I did not regret my decision. I will definitely return.

We booked a table for 5:45 and the waiter asked if we were going to the theatre, which one and what time it started. He then said he would make sure that the food came quickly. I had pate followed by beef Wellington and my other diner had fish cake followed by steak and kidney pudding. Everything was absolutely delicious and although we still had time for dessert we were actually too full. My only criticism was that we weren't offered the set menu yet the table next to us were. The atmosphere, the food and the service was fantastic.

We enjoyed a very good meal at Simpson's pre-theatre. We were early, so among the first diners, so the staff were plentiful and very helpful. Food was excellent and well presented - I had potted shrimps which were outstanding followed by an excellent steak and kidney pudding; my wife enjoyed the roast lamb. Do leave room for pudding. My only adverse comment would be the prices, which are a bit toppish, even for London. There is not much on the wine list under £30 and we were £140 for dinner for two with wine - we did not begrudge it, as the food was excellent, but this is a treat, and diners should be prepared for that.

I was looking forward to visiting Simpson's where I had been as a 12 year old in 1956 with my grandfather on our Grand European Tour. I was excited to see that the menu cover was the same one I had treasured in my scrapbook. We were there at 1pm on a Sunday and the dining room had just a few people. They showed us to our table for two next to a wall, although I had specifically requested a table at the window when I made the reservation. When I asked if we could move, there was no problem; I wondered why they did not honor my request in the firs place. After the initial order of drinks (when they brought my husband the wrong red wine) there was no service...and a different person came to the table every time. The roast beef was indifferently presented; the Yorkshire hard and the beef tasteless. My husband wanted "spotted dick" for dessert and after twenty minutes, they finally TOOK our order and then it took another twenty minutes to receive it. The waiter of the moment apologized, but that was too little too soon!!!! Too bad to have such a bad memory after all the years of a wonderful one. I am also distressed as a Canadian that it is managed by the Fairmont brand.

Have eaten at Simpsons a number of times and had a booth which gives a bit more privacy but this visit we had a very small table in the centre of the restaurant so close the a table of 4 that my wife and I could hardly hear ourselves talk which made us finish our dinner early with no sweets, coffee or liqueurs. Service and food always very good and will continue to visit. Perhaps a new table layout for the centre of the restaurant where tables for two are around the outside and the larger parties in the middle.

Excellent roasts particularly the lamb. Service was good. Noise level low despite being full which is a real bonus to many who have reduced hearing. However the bar man does not know how to serve soft drinks and my COKE was not pre cooled and not worth the price. It was also drowned in ice and just left to tubule over the ice liberating vast quantities of bubbles so drink was flat. For the price versus Tesco's extremely poor and therefore bar man needs retraining and should make just as big a fuss to it as an expensive Champaign!! Will definitely write Simpsons when I get home from holiday. Pity otherwise a great meal with lovely starter, one of best main courses i have had in long time and a good sweet. Will go back but expect bar man should be retrained by then otherwise I will reject my COKE and insist it should be done again to my spec!!

The dining table was well located and the restaurant busy but this did not affect service which was attentive but not overbearing, we had the crab, hock terrine and beetroot carpaccio, good portions and well flavoured, three beefs and one pork cheeks plus various extra sides. The pork was straight from the kitchen, the beef carved at the table and was stunning, pink soft and generous, the yorkshires were massive, the roasties and cabbage superb. For dessert we had the taster menu for four which was sublime. The bill was £470 including cocktails, two good bottles of reds and a bottle of Saunternes with the desserts that made a great difference, we could not afford to do this regularly but will certainly try and do it again.

The meal was very good and turned around quickly as we had a theatre booking. Disappointing on two counts - we were not made aware when booking that the pre theatre offer was not available so was not good value at full a la carte prices. I had also asked for champagne on the table when we arrived as it was my husbands birthday and had checked the day before to make sure that this was in hand - it wasn't there so had to order at the table which spoiled the surprise. They did however play happy birthday at the end of the meal and brought out a little cake with candle - nice touch!

Great to be back, and happily, they were VERY busy. This restaurant is a British institution. Lovely, revised menu, but the roast beef and roast lamb from the cart remain untouched by time. Better selection of appetizers. Broader selection of main courses and side dishes, but you come here for the beef off the cart! The wine menu could use a better selection of half bottles, and it's sad that the American choices are meager, but c'e la vie. The restaurant is fabulous, the food is fabulous, the prices are - gag - uhm, fabulous. But that is why God invented the credit card. GO, especially if you've never been there before. And if you have, for heaven sake, go back!

A very nice lunch. We had the fixed price menu. The fish cake starter was large enough to be a main course. Four of us had the roast beef. Two slices filled the dinner plate and was beautifully tender, although thought the supplement for it was a little hefty. We were not rushed. Overall a good dining experience

We enjoyed a very good meal at Simpsons. For us it was a special occasion venue and it lived up to its reputation as we love the traditional charm of the restaurant. Although the restaurants seems expensive, it is comparable to similar restaurants but in our opinion offers a better standard of service - all of the staff had time to talk and explain the minute or options available.

Simpsons in the Strand has been serving roast beef for over 170 years, they say practice makes perfect. All three of us ordered the roast rib of beef. It came within a few minutes on a silver domed trolley, served by two chefs. We chose between two roasts, one rare and one medium. Expertly carved, each diner had three good sized slices, horseradish, gravy and a large Yorkshire pudding. On a separate plate is a small pan of Savoy cabbage and three roast potatoes. The beef was fantastic, you could have cut it with a spoon. A bit pricey at £31 each, but worth it.

Wine list was a bit pricey; but the attention and good humour of our young waiter made for an enjoyable evening. The eating fitted the ambience in being good English comfort food and the frequent rendering of "Happy Birthday" from other tables confirmed its status as a "special occasion" venue. Fond memories of Simpsons, I havent visited for 21 years, but it remains marvellous. They still have Spotted Dick and custard from my rowing club dinner days - fantastic! And it's all very Downton Abbey - Carsons abound, and you may spot Dowager Lady Grantham, looking imperious as the beef is carved at table. The food is excellent with portions suitable for the calorie unconcerned, as seconds are available (probably thirds too if you asked)! Service is great and but not over-indulgent. Vegetarians aside, you could take anyone here and be anyone here, as mode of dress is not an issue, just dont come in your shorts. Not cheap, but a great London experience - the home of chess apparently...though fortunately you don't have to play it.
