A word from Simpson's In The Strand
Simpson's is one of the few London restaurants offering only the finest quality British ingredients cooked to perfection in classic British style. The restaurant's speciality is Scottish beef on the bone that has been aged for 28 days for maximum flavour. The beef is carved at guests' tables from antique silver-domed trolleys, which is a practice that began over 150 years ago and for which Simpson's is world-renowned. Other Simpson’s signature dishes include classics such as potted shrimps, roast saddle of lamb and steak and kidney pie.

Guests can also enjoy classic cocktails in Knight’s Bar, an art deco cocktail lounge located on the first floor. It is the perfect place to enjoy either a pre-dinner cocktail or after-dinner aperitif.

Diner Reviews
  • "We took a couple of friends for Sunday lunch. Between us we had wanted to go to Simpson's in the Strand for over 300 years! The wait was worth it, excellent food and wine list and amazing setting. But, what made this such a wonderful time was the service. Some places just get 'it' right and this is one of those places. The Dover Sole was outstanding and the best one of our guests had eaten since the 1940s. Thank you to all who made this such a wonderful lunch, we will be back."

  • "We booked via email for a Saturday evening and were not disappointed. We both had beef Wellington (after seeing how massive the roast beef portions were) and it was delicious, with very generous portions. We didn't have a starter and couldn't manage a dessert, but were totally replete! The wine was excellent, service good and it was a good experience all round. The only little niggle would be that the first table we were seated at was far too low and neither of us could fit our legs under. However, they did move us immediately. We would definitely return."

  • "We absolutely love Simpsons, having been going there for over 11 years. It just gets better! The cocktails before are always delicious. The service is outstanding, always attentive and nothing is too much trouble. The food is always of excellent quality and the champagne is always served at the correct temperature too! The staff are all impeccably dressed. Sitting in the Grand Divan with the pianist playing, watching couples, families and business diners all enjoying the experience makes me feel so special - always. This is Great Britain at it's best - it's our heritage, it's tradition and we should be proud of this institution - long may it reign!"

  • "Sadly, overall not good value for money. Disappointing that signature courses inc beef was very ordinary. Food lacked freshness and creativity. Paid over 300 for a relatively basic lunch."

  • "I have been coming to Simpsons for years. Such a lovely room, a perfect old English breakfast. How nice to dine in quiet with adults. Service was, as always, prompt and courteous. My fellow diners were fir the most part dressed appropriately. There were even a few businessmen in suits, such a rarity these days. Overall, a wonderful experience. I will come back again and again."

  • "Although my overall rating was 'Very Good' I feel it could have been higher when remembering past dining experiences. This review is for Breakfast only. Although this was between 9-10am on a Thursday morning, unfortunately the restaurant was nearly empty, which for this large traditional dining area adversely effected the the ambience. The food was of a high standard as was the service. We would always try and eat at Simpson's when visiting London."

  • "Because there was a mistake with an appetizer our entrées were kept warm and therefore not prepared fresh. This compromised the quality of the Yorkshire pudding, it was not very hot and not as tender as it ought to be. The tableside carving is a nice touch and very traditional and very classy but does not make up for the average taste of the food. Very disappointing because roast beef and Yorkshire pudding is a signature dish. The cabbage was absolutely bland I would never order that again. Desserts were very English and very rich and very good. The balance of the meal was at best average."

  • "We had Avery good meal in a quiet alcove so we could talk without being disturbed. The waiters were friendly but not over the top."

  • "It has been 20 years since I frequented London and did not want to miss a visit back to Simpson's. It met all our expectations. Every course was excellent--expecially the tableside carved aged beef."

  • "Visited from Canada - first heard of this place from Merchant Ivory's production of Howard's End where they go to Simpson's for dinner. A truly English - old school feel to this classic restaurant. Food - Excellent Ambience - Excellent, English Library feel, live Pianist, relaxed English Elegance Service - good - went for our last night in London - lived up to the Romance except I felt fused at every course, and thought I was at an American Mc.Donald's - Heres your hat - what's your hurry…. this was all due to the one Waiter who kept rushing us… we were in and out with all courses and wine within an hour ??? Surely this is not their aim - but was too tired to complain… if you go - notice the Painting over the fireplace - CHARMING!"

  • "I booked this for a team breakfast . So disappointing, the dining hall was completely empty, until one other table came in off the street (not as per dress code), the service was slow, lacked personality and showed little interest in serving us. The food was poor, slopped onto plates and for the most part unappealing ,not particularly hot. the big breakfast had substitutes against the menu but we were not informed when ordering, the two course healthy breakfast was served after the hot breakfast's so that by the time the second course came everyone else had finished. It was meant to be a treat - we will not eat there again. I can understand why its empty - who could possibly recommend them, such a shame for a restaurant with such history."

  • "A pleasant atmosphere, for breakfast or for brunch. English breakfast lives up to its name as were the Eggs Royale."
    dined on 14/07/2014
  • "We enjoyed the formal but comfortable setting and the food was very good. The service varied by staff member; some were very attentive while others seemed to get sidetracked and were slow to respond. The management team on duty the Sunday evening we were there were accommodating and flexible."

  • "Following a family tradition, I arranged an evening meal for my overseas family during their summer visit to the UK. As ever, the food was outstanding, the setting perfect as we recalled the pleasure with which our parents enjoyed similar occasions and for the most part the staff attentive and delightful. This time, the initial service was slow but, once we had managed to attract attention and place our wine order, our irritation dissipated . The sommelier was most helpful and engaging., the wine excellent and the, beef as outstanding as ever. Little touches such as the cup of soup for those not having starters and the petit fours with the coffee were welcomed and contributed to our overall enjoyment of the occasion."

  • "Simpson's in the Strand offers one of the best traditional English dining experiences in London and is well worth a visit, especially for a special occasion. It is well worth the rather high prices. The carving of the beef and lamb joints from a silver trolley at your table is a wonderful piece of theatre. The meat is so tender that it melts in the mouth, and the roast potatoes are delicious too. A slight pity that the birthday diner did not receive a "Happy Birthday" inscription on a dessert plate or similar despite having requested it in advance."

  • "Food was first class, lovely place, service was a bit slow especially when large party arrived, but overall excellent and will definitely being going again, and have already recommended to others."

  • "I reserved a table on Sunday and they mistook it, and I told them 3 times we reserved a table for a special occassion, yet all of them were ignored. After the meal when we ordered a dessert, we asked whether they really read my e-mails. Then they did serve a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. Food was very nice, but service is rather terrible for a prestige restaurant."

  • "My wife and I had dinner after the theatre. It was my first visit but my wif'e's uncle had given her lunch at Simpsons many times when she was a student (we are now in our seventies). She was delighted to find the ambience unchanged in essence. I was delighted with it full stop. We found the service excellent, - prompt and effective without being smarmy - provided by professionals taking a pride in their jobs. Particular thanks to the sommeiler who guided us to a wine which was reasonable in price and a delightful companion to our meal.. The meal itself was superb - roast beef for me and lobster for my wife - wonderful British food cooked to perfection."

  • "I booked dinner two nights running at Simpsons: that says it all! Great historic dining room with magnificent beef and excellent and welcoming "old fashioned" service. Specific table requests met each night. Good value too."

  • "This restaurant has real atmosphere and a charm that you don't find in many modern restaurants. OK so you can get better food and better service elsewhere, but the experience is exceptional and the dining room ambience is special. My third visit and it gets better the more you experience the uniqueness of this establishment."

  • "Really great value for pre dinner theatre. Best I've ever had. Service was excellent and such a lovely calming atmosphere before heading into busy London Town. food was beautiful ."

  • "An extra £8 for roast beef is a bit steep. When it came it was only just warm and the yorkshire pudding was burnt. Could be a bit more generous with the clotted cream in the pudding. Service was friendly but please wait for people to get sat down before serving bread rolls, menus, etc."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "We enjoyed our visit very much.. It is some years since I was at Simpsons and the ambience is still as good as I remember."

  • "With stunning historical British decor and dark wood panels, chandeliers and such it struck a chord for the traditional Brit in me. The food was exception in both presentation and taste and the staff where all too prepared to cater my every need. We were made to feel very special and were very well looked after. Highly recommend for a romantic meal."

  • "Had a fantastic meal here on Saturday evening. The food was amazing, the staff were extremely polite and friendly and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Would definitely come again"

  • "I regularly used to have breakfast at Simpsons in the 1990s, but have not visited for several years. I remember it as a bastion of traditional service and excellent value, but my recent visit was a disappointing experience. The food was fine, although the accountants are clearly in charge with the 'portion control'. The service was indifferent and the management ethos now appears to be one of revenue maximisation. It's really not on to have items brought to the table and separately charged for that have not been requested, and since when has toast not been included as part of an English breakfast anyway?"
    dined on 04/07/2014
  • "We wanted to celebrate my wifes 50th birthday which we were mentioning on our reservation AND the booking confirmation one day before our visit. Unfortunately nothing happend, they simply forgot it. So this evening was quite disapointing. Nevertheless the food and the service was very good. The winelist in my opinion is overpriced."
    dined on 02/07/2014
  • "Excellent choice for a higher end pre theatre meal. The food is exquisite and the service is attentive, yet not "in your face", just right. The price is on the higher side but this restaurant delivers quality in a lovely setting. Recommended."

  • "My wife and I were both completely satisfied in every way. Simpsons will definitely figure in future family occasions"

  • "Food, service great in a lovely Ole English room. Nice piano music. Had the beef (carved at table) with savoy cabbage, Yorkshire pudding and roasted potatoes. Everything hot and perfectly cooked."

  • "Yes some people may say you can get meals for less in London, but what you cannot put a price on is the quality, the whole experience and being made to feel special is priceless. The roast beef was unbelievable. But there are less expensive meals that are just as good, like the steak & kidney pudding. Recommend you arrive 1hr early so you can have a pre drink in the lounge upstairs. Thanks to the staff who made a special occasion, truly special"
