A word from Skylon
Skylon Restaurant in London’s landmark Royal Festival Hall is a hot destination eatery. Inspired by the emblematic sculpture of the 1951 Festival of Britain, Skylon is a stylish restaurant on a grand scale, with formal dining room, smart casual grill and centerpiece bar, each a blend of 1950’s-inspired chic and modern design, all with sweeping Thames panoramas through floor-to-ceiling windows. Executive Chef, Adam Gray describes his food as modern British – simple, honest and with a sometimes unusual twist on classic dishes. Skylon is an exciting restaurant for events at the Royal Festival Hall – its bubbling, vivacious ambience sets the tone for pre- or post-event dining. The sommeliers are renowned for the excellence of their knowledge and the charm and ease with which they guide you to great quaffing decisions. Skylon is the metropolitan experience as it should be: refined cuisine, intriguing wines, high culture and heart-lifting views.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Over all I felt the venue and ambience was very tired, with a long walk to the reception and a very surly lady at reception. Dinner was Ok, if a little limited on choice, it also had no sense of a kitchen at all, which is sometimes nice to have. One thing that will surprise I'm sure anyone that visits here is that you share the toilets with the festival hall goers, so for a 'dining' experience I thought was a bit poor."

  • "Impressive fixed price menu with glass of champagne which I believe was Moet. Excellent value, excellent food, excellent service and a lovely outlook over the river Thames."

  • "I have nothing negative to say. We had a 2 course set menu lunch, served with excellent bread and and unexpected petit four treat. Really good, i look forward to my next visit."

  • "Perfect location for a business lunch. Had the top table deal. Very good food. Very nice table by the window. Good value for business meal prices and service was impeccable. Thank you."

  • "It was a business celebration and it could not have been better . Service was very good, the food was delicious and very well presented ."

  • "Skylon has a stunning view of the Thames and the food and service is undoubtedly excellent. It is one of my favourite restaurants for a special occasion. As always the food and service were excellent. However, this visit was spoiled by the restaurant's decision to close the blinds - thereby obscuring the view and leaving everyone to eat in semi-drakness, even though it was bright an sunny outside. Apparently this was to stop the restaurant getting too hot. For the prices Skylon charge they ought to be able to afford decent air conditioning. I will definitely go back, but not in summer."

  • "Excellent food and service! We went to Skylon for my husband's birthday after a recommendation from a friend and it lived up to my expectations and more...we even got window seats! Food and service could not be faulted. They even wrote happy birthday on my husband's dessert in chocolate (candle included! :-) a lovely touch! The food was delicious and I can't wait to go back!"

  • "Four of us had lunch at the restaurant on Saturday and it was thoroughly enjoyable. The location is perfect, the ambience is relaxing with excellent service and it was excellent value for money. The food was well presented and delicious and the portions a manageable size."

  • "This is a pretty noisy place so don't come here for a quiet meal. The view over the Thames is fantastic, especially if you are lucky enough to be seated by the window. All four of us opted for the fixed price two course dinner. We all chose scallops, which for once were served without pig meat of any kind (much to my pescatarian partner's joy). Instead though they came with potato and there was something not altogether pleasant about the combination of textures. My main course of mutton was delicious! The petit fore were probably the best I've had anywhere. We had a slight tussle with the manager over whether or not a 20% discount should have been applied because of our Southbank membership, but it turns out it applies only to lunch."

  • "Three of us met early evening after work and had the pre-theatre menu. I ordered Asparagus with soft egg to start from the veggie menu but received a pea soup with asparagus and a creme fraiche dipping sauce at the side. This was fine but not what I ordered but only realised afterwards so ate it anyway. Asparagus OK but soup was not seasoned enough. Other diners had goats cheese tart and and a salad to start which was excellent. Main courses were veg risotto, pasta and macaroni cheese which was very good. They ran out of Pinot Grigot so we had the sauvignon blanc which went well with the food. Good service and nice atmosphere."

  • "My brother's graduation was held at the Royal Festival Hall so it was a perfect location to go for a lovely meal at Skylon. We dined from the set lunch menu and enjoyed a glass of champagne. The food was delicious, we even had room for dessert. The staff were very attentive. It was a beautiful setting and a great way to celebrate in style!"

  • "Dinner for three with a friend visiting from the US on Tuesday, July 15. Had a bad feeling from the moment I walked in. The place is filthy - badly stained carpeting, food scraps from prior patrons on the flor in the bar area where we sat for a glad of wine before the meal. Entree (cod) was tiny and bland and scallop starter was bland as well. The only saving grace was the competent and attentive service and the wine selection. Very small pours on the wines by the glass, so make sure to get a bottle!"

  • "what a fantastic space and view! Great food although expected a little bit more for the price. The cherry brulee tart was to die for. Lacking a bit in service. Waited almost 20min for my pre dinner cocktail to arrive."

  • "I've been to Skylon many times previously but my latest visit was very disappointing. The ambience, as ever, was magnificent but everything else appeared to have descended rapidly downhill. The food itself was bland to the point of being tasteless. This wasn't just my opinion but also that of my guest. My asparagus soup was limpid - ie thin and under-seasoned. We were both eating from the a la carte menu and were expecting something much better from our halibut which lacked distinctive flavour. The coffee and tea were perfectly OK. I'm returning very soon to the grill; I'm just hoping that this will not be a repeat of my visit to the restaurant. The cost of the meal was high and service so-so."
    dined on 15/07/2014
  • "Great location and views but found the food small in quantity and nothing that special in taste - the bill of £180 for 2 was also on the high side considering it was a lunch!"

  • "This was a suprise birthday lunch for my Daughters 16th Birthday. the table was situated looking out on the thames and she was given a lovely birthday treat at the end of the meal."

  • "On a busy Friday night the restaurant team made a real effort to secure a window table. We really did appreciate the human touch from the full team. Great service, food & location made it a memorable fun evening. I use Skylon occasionally not regularly and have always had a good experience, keep it up & thanks!"

  • "After dining many times with friends and family and always very enjoyable, service was poor. Had to chase for bill and had to stand up and walk over to till point to pay! Fed back my concerns and was told they will try to do better next time whilst still billing me a service charge!"
    dined on 10/07/2014
  • "Found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and worked hard. The atmosphere was good too. The choices very very poor - very little choice. The size of the portions were disgusting - abosolutely disgusting. I am 67yrs old and have never been to a restaurant serving such miniscule portions. I have dined around the world. The meal was extremely expensive and no value for money. I would never eat there again and would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "We had the pre theatre menu. Food and wine were excellent. During a two hour meal the service was initially rushed and intrusive and became so slow that there was no time for coffee. Disappointing."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "The food on this occasion was not up to the previous standard. Risotto (cheese and tomato) was too al dente. Sea trout starter had little flavour. Glass of wine ordered was £6.50 blanc de blanc - was charged £9.50 for Chablis - in a hurry to get to theatre and did not want to spoil occasion by making a fuss. Will think twice before booking again. Shame that the standard of food seems to have dropped and is not good value."
    dined on 08/07/2014
  • "The food was mostly very good, though my cherry and basil desert was not a successful combination, but the a la carte is still expensive for the quality (at £42 for 2 courses or £48 for 3). The service was efficient but brusque and at times gave the impression we were in a machine rather than a restaurant. We were twice demanded "Anything else?" with no hint of a smile or even eye contact. The setting is lovely. Maybe the staff could enjoy it a bit more."

  • "When I visit London I always try to dine at Skylon because I have not found any other restaurant that beats it. The food and service is outstanding, and as a single dinner they always have a selection of great half bottles of wine. The restaurant is split in two, one half called the Grill and the other half (where I dinned is the main restaurant) which is more formal. If you want to push the boat out , go to the main restaurant. When booking try to get a window table."

  • "What do you get a couple who have been together for 30 years and decide to get married and come to Europe for their honeymoon ? A table for 2 at Skylon. My friends said they were treated like Royalty even though they were late. He is a chef. Said it was the best meal he had had since leaving Melbourne. They had 3 courses and said it was too much as the food was plentiful but they ate every morsel as it was so wonderful. Thank you Skylon."

  • "A thoroughly enjoyable location with great food and service to match. Would not hesitate to go back, a table in the window is great for people watching on a busy summer evening."

  • "A group went to skylon to celebrate my son's graduation. The food was very good, the service impeccable and the view lovely."

  • "We really appreciated having our request for a window table catered for. This was a special birthday and end of exams double celebration and it was a lovely evening."
    dined on 03/07/2014
  • "Just about the best beef I have ever eaten served in one of London's grandest spaces. My only gripe would be the overpriced wine list, where a few more budget conscious choices wouldn't go a miss."
    dined on 02/07/2014
  • "A touch of class on the Southbank. I've been visiting Skylon since the opening and has never let me down. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Grand, glam but also very intimidate. I can't wait for the next special occasion."
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "The setting and ambience were very nice and we had a beautiful table. The food was nice but not as good as other restuarants in that price bracket. The service was generally good but again, I would haev expected better. There were a lot of staff but it was often quite hard to get their attention. Some memebrs of staff were very pleasant but it was quite hard to understand them and I don't think they understood us qhich was a bit awkward. I woudl go back for the setting but for the price I would probably choose a difference restaurant."

  • "Enjoyed a really good meal, with prompt and attentive service in buzzy ambience with stunning views over the River Thames."
    dined on 28/06/2014
  • "Great decor and views. Good for drinks. Post-dinner menu vegetarian options poor."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "We were celebrating my husband's birthday and they did make a fuss of him, which made the evening special. The food, wine and cocktails were lovely. I definitely recommend this restaurant. The only thing I felt could be better was that the wine menu was more extensive than the food menu, I would have liked more food options, as it is not a cheap place at £79 per head (£470 for 6 people in total), which only included 2 drinks per person."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at Skylon. The venue is great and manages to set a different tone to the Brasserie even though in the same space with table cloths wider spacing of tables etc. We were lucky to have a window table overlooking the river. The service was excellent. I felt well tended to without it being starchy and too formal. they did make an error with the bill but quickly corrected it with great grace. As for the food, the portions were good and some delicious combinations and flavours - lovely white asparagus both soft and with some bite with blue cheese and pancetta, deep and rich tomato risotto, perfectly cooked tuna and interesting raspberry medley. Wine sommelier was also helpful with a lovely choice."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "Excellent service, as usual. Speed of service of each course about right."
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "excellent venue with lovely views across Thames - especially from the window table. Food very good although waiter did not understand when told part of the honeycomb was burnt and just laughed. Otherwise main was delicious and wold recommend venue"
    dined on 27/06/2014
  • "The view is excellent and the decoration is classy but somewhat relaxed. The wine/cocktail menu is huge and the food menu aspires to a that of a starred restaurant. The actual cooking though was not as brilliant as the price tag suggests."

  • "Unfortunately there was a DJ outside which was so loud that we couldn't even talk to each other. This Sunday lunch was a very special occasion that was slightly ruined. Had I known this in advanced I would have booked somewhere else. It is still a very nice venue and I would eat there again but without the outside entertainment."
