A word from Spread Eagle Restaurant
With origins as a tavern and coaching inn from the early 1600s, The Spread Eagle had, by Victorian times, also gained a reputation as an excellent restaurant. Today it is still a landmark: setting the standard for fine food in Greenwich. This West End dining away from the stress of the city.

As you enter The Spread Eagle you are immediately envelopped by the classic surroundings. The bar area is just the place to relax before dinner. With jazz music playing softly in the background you can indulge in a glass of champagne or an aperitif. .

Thumping music from the live band in the club below totally ruined the potential for a relaxing evening. The food was good although the menu was unimaginative and very expensive for what it was.

We chose this restaurant on the basis of the menu detailed on Top Table but none of our favourite items were available on the day. Instead of sea bass we opted for chicken and it was overdone and the palma ham burnt. We should have sent it back but didn't have the time. We gave feedback to the waiter who was very nice and he offered us a liqueur at the end of the meal.

We were a group of 5 for dinner. The premises are beautifully set out, the music was perfect and the tables well laid. The food was very good but a couple of the mains were a bit of a let down, over cooked prawns and over cooked fish. The waiting staff were very friendly and did their best although managed to get our wine order wrong and there was a bit of confusion at times. These were minor things though. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place and with a few improvements I would give it an excellent. Lovely food, lovely décor and very well meaning and welcoming staff.

We had a lovely meal at the Spread Eagle the other day - service was attentive, the restaurant itself is beautiful and there was a good ambience. However, though the food was beautifully presented, the taste did not quite live up to the presentation, and left us slightly disappointed. Having said that, my prawn starter was excellent.

I would definitely return to this restaurant on my next visit to Greenwich. I ordered the plaice, which to my surprise was in a batter; however, it was so light and tasty that I would definitely recommend it to any fish lovers. If this restaurant was in my neighbourhood I would be a regular.

Well executed food, but at £22.50 for 2 courses (£25 for 3) their prix fixe menu is very expensive for limited options. I acknowlege it was my mistake - I booked a table for Sunday lunch, missing the fact that the reasonably priced 'lunch menu' only applied Monday-Friday. However, the mark up in price for essentially the same menu options (£13.50 midweek, £22.50 on a Sunday) is very steep. The setting is nice, the service good, food is well done (if not particularly interesting) and the wine menu reasonable (nothing below £20 but a reasonable selection below £30), but I won't return on a Sunday.

Whilst only 3 starters and 3 mains on the lunchtime special the food was excellent. Tuna starter was 3 large pieces seared perfectly so as to have 2 textures - cooked exterior and sushi interior. So fresh and the black bean/spring onion and dressing along with the red pepper puree were wonderful compliments. Lamb on artichoke with puree main was also delightful. Perfectly cooked. Portions were adequate. Warm bread beforehand and the house red was of great quality. Waiter was diligent, very friendly and polite but not intrusive. Lots of large paintings and prints of Greenwich, Thames thro to London going back over centuries. Only minor gripe was £3 for small coffee after - £3.37 once service charge added. Definitely going back again

Yet another change of chef and another menu, I'm wondering having been to the spread eagle over many years whether they suffer from an Identity crisis. The name itself shouts out 'PUB' and the decor is kind of weird and it's always quiet. Having said that the food was very good and service good and we enjoy coming here.

Pants. Utter pants. Booked two weeks in advance, was sat near toilet in empty establishment. Menu printed on A4 paper with a reduced offering from their website Starters were flaccid and lacked flavor, mains were pathetic for £20 a plate and the bad taste in my mouth was not the reactive, unplanned service or the lack of knowledge by the manager of his wine list, but that of the frozen dessert served at the end. Mistakes on the bill (charging for 2 bottles of wine) and the staff desperate to get home, so much they switched the heating off. Miserable birthday for my other half and disappointing customer experience. If their not struggling, they should be. I hated paying the bill and wished I went to Little Chef.

Given the mixed reviews I read before booking, I wasn't sure what to expect, but we had a lovely evening. The food was delicious, particularly the baby stuffed squid and the lamb which was all perfectly cooked. The restaurant was busy, always a good sign (although it was a Saturday) and the atmosphere was relaxed and cosy, with good but not overly attentive service, which is how we like it. We will definitely return.

The floor and walls vibrate due to the noise from the jazz club that is next to the restaurant. The experience is something like being at the back of a nightclub, with bass reverberating around you. The service is adequate but not great; we found it difficult to get anybody's attention. These points are a real shame because the food is actually very good. We had some of the best scallops we've ever had and beef Wellington that was cooked to perfection. Sadly, I would not recommend the spread eagle: the noise from next door destroys the ambience (probably why it was mostly empty when we visited) of what would otherwise be a nice find.

We had reservations about booking this restaurant given the mixed reviews. On arrival we were given a warm welcome and shown to our table. The service was good - friendly and attentive - and the food was very good too. The restaurant was pretty quiet as it was pre theatre but it does have a nice atmosphere and I particularly like the collection of art on the walls. We intend to dine at the restaurant again and would recommend it to others.

Decided to go with friends to have a Christmas Eve meal. The roast potatoes were the worst I have eaten, undercooked and hard, as were the parsnips. The Turkey was fine but the accompanying veg was very low standard. My friends went for Trout and both were pleased - if only I was not so traditional that evening, but as I was not going to be eating Turkey on Christmas Day I thought I would give it go....

I like the decor and the ambience seems more relaxed and less formal than in years past, which I think is a good thing. The service was a bit erratic, with the waitress & waiters not knowing who had ordered what, for all three courses, plus the bread arrived after the starters were served. The service was friendly enough and they knew that one of the dishes was no longer available. The food was also fine and tasted good, but wasn't anything exceptional. The menu also seemed a little mis-matched, with the Burger (Hache) and breaded chicken dishes I'd expect more usual on a Children's menu. The overall experience was pleasant, but not quite good enough for me to unilaterally recommend to everyone.

We came for a special celebration and weren't disappointed, but it is hard to know what this restaurant is trying to achieve. The high prices and formal decoration with antiques and paintings are at odds with the cheap looking chairs, plattered steak (more like old breadboards) and pubby service. The staff are well meaning and charming, but we hadn't paid for pub bonhomie ('Awright mate, what you up to this weekend?'), or for comically amateur attempts at serving and laying a table (We had three waiters who clearly didn't communicate so we got endless repetition). That said the food was exceptionally good and beautifully cooked, and there is a friendliness that suffuses this place that will make me want to return.

Have visited many times before but not for 18 months. Gone downhill in all respects except the lovely decor. At these prices you expect to be met by a front of house manager. Only 6 or 7 tables were occupied but service was lackadaisical and a request for mustard was forgotten until we had almost finished our lunch. It was then left on the table during dessert. Sunday lunch menu is reduced to 2 roast meat plus 1 fish, 1 vegetarian. With such little choice available you expect very good food, but beef needed steak knives to cut it & vegetables did not come separately but were heaped on top of the yorkshire pudding rendering it soggy. The veg seemed prepared some time before the meat, no separate gravy. Puddings were just ok. Disappointing.

The new menu is two-thirds very good- excellent starters and very good desserts, but the main courses lack the creative flair expected of the much-vaunted new chef. There is nothing wrong with aspiring to offer a good burger on such a menu. This is a problem when this permeates the entire offering. Service used to be one of SE's hallmarks. No longer. If points were awarded for enthusiasm, this would get 5 stars. Unfortunately, this cannot disguse a lack of basic skills so evident in the "old restaurant". Even in a bistro, enthusiastic amateurism does not cut it. What used to be a differentiated offering in SE10 no longer is. If you've never been before, it's all right if pricey for what it is. If you have, I fear you will be disappointed

Having been to the Spread Eagle on a number of occasions previously, I have to say that I was a little disappointed in this visit. The food was very good, but the level of service could have been much better, for example the main course was brought before replacing the cutlery, being prompted to advise on what side dishes they had and we were not offered or brought any bread. These might be small details but the Spread Eagle is a very very expensive restaurant. If they choose to charge these sorts of prices the service must match this.

As a special birthday meal, the Spread Eagle ticked all the right boxes. My partners starter of scallop Won Ton was excellent and my fathers steak was cooked to perfection. I opted for the lamb which was very well cooked and seasoned, although the side of just green beans, left me feeling the need for carbs! Wine selection was wide and service very attentive and friendly. Quite pricey for the type of food served, but the ambience makes this feel like a special night out. Will definitely visit again for a treat.

Unfortunately only the expectation of the price was met, we paid over 200 pounds and the only good thing was the wine (and that came from Chile!). I had fish, but there were bones it in. After picking them out my mounth I complained to the staff, and the only reply was: be carfull when eating! Very very disappointing! Overal food quality was just poor, and not at all mathing the price.

An excellent dining room, interesting menu and attentive service led to high expectations, but the food did not rise to the occasion. The re-interpretation of duck l'orange lacked flavor and required a steak knife to cut. My companion's steak was well cooked, but the red wine jus tasted like the scrapings from the grill. Maybe an off night for the kitchen?
